The Heart of the Matter………….

Parents,

During the month of February, we often reflect upon those we love and cherish. We desire for them to

have fulfilling and happy lives. By instilling the love of learning with our children at a very young age, we set

the foundation for them on their educational journey.

We nurture a child's love of learning by expanding on his/ her own inquisitive nature and allowing each to

reach his/her potential. As teachers and parents, we know that learning is more than just teaching “standards.”

We are responsible for creating an environment of support that allows our children to develop their own ideas,

express their feelings, take risks, make choices, and most of all, grow to be strong, thinking individuals.

Our “One to the World “and “Personalized Learning” initiatives promote the love of learning through highly

engaging lessons that are authentic, rigorous and strong in content, in addition to being individualized.

Students are excited to create, collaborate and problem solve with one another. Through our One to the World

lessons, our teachers are reaching beyond the classroom walls connecting with children around the world.

Personalized Learning has allowed our teachers to ensure standards are mastered and children are able to apply

concepts as they move towards project based instruction. These two initiatives perfectly go hand-in hand.

Our Rosa Lee Carter staff is meeting monthly to support these initiatives to ensure systems are in place for

student success.

The RLC community also plays an integral part to our instructional practices. Students improve the quality of

their work by connecting to others beyond their teachers and classmates. You may be asked to attend a

presentation, provide valuable tools or connect through technology to support teaching and learning.

We realize the need for our students to be highly productive individuals when entering the workforce. It will be

necessary for our children to be creators, collaborators, communicators and problem solvers. Through authentic,

rigorous lessons, students become invested in their learning and see the value of their education.

Thank you for partnering with us as we strive to be the very best at our trade.

We appreciate your constant support and encouragement.

Regards,

Principal,

Mrs. Ann Y. Hines

Students of the Month

Rosa Lee Carter is excited to recognize students who have shown exemplar behavior throughout each school day. Every

month, students will be selected to represent their classroom as a student role model. These role models will be

showcased on the morning announcements. For February, the following students have been leading the way by respecting

self, others, and property. Congratulations to these Leaders of the Pack!

In music, the kindergarteners continue to explore classroom instruments, do movement activities, as well as keeping a steady beat and singing in tune. First grade will be learning about the instruments in an orchestra, singing solfege (so la and mi), composer Camille Saint-Saens, and matching pitch. Second grade will also be learning about the instruments in an orchestra and what family they belong to, as well as about composer Sergei Prokofiev. Third grade will be focusing on their show, they can’t wait to share it with you in March! Fourth grade will be reviewing treble clef note names, composer Aaron Copland, and beginning their recorder unit. Fifth grade will review what they know about the orchestra, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and how to write a complete measure of music!

It’s an exciting month to be in the music room!

This February, the PE program at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School will continue with underhand toss/catch and football skills. Starting on the second week of February we will be emphasizing on striking with a hand held implement. Students will learn how to play scooter hockey and floor hockey and practice fundamental skills. We will continue to emphasize the importance of learning the five components of fitness along with the five intensity levels. We believe as a PE department that the process of participating regularly in a physically active lifestyle will lead to personal enjoyment, challenge, satisfaction, and a healthy mind and body. We will emphasize to our students to give their very best effort and show good sportsmanship in all they do in PE class.

Stay active!

Physical Education

For the month of February, our guidance lessons will focus on the character trait of caring.

This character trait focuses on being kind, being compassionate, expressing gratitude, forgiving others, helping people in need, and being charitable and altruistic. Students will be writing letters to a special staff member whom they want to thank for all their hard work. We will also discuss conflict resolution, problem solving, and tattling versus reporting.

During our SEARCH lessons, students are provided the opportunity to explore

many avenues for successful problem solving in the classroom. Perhaps your

children have mentioned that they have used one of our five thinking keys to

help unlock their brain to complete a task requiring perceiving, connecting,

reasoning, evaluating, or creating.

In SEARCH we emphasize creating, which aligns with the highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Four

elements of creativity can be used to identify both creative thinkers and creative products: fluency,

flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Creativity is a trait that is present in every person and one

that can be improved with practice. Fortunately, there are many ways in which parents can

promote creativity in their children.

First, it is important to establish a home environment that encourages creativity. Provide a private

work space, materials, and unscheduled quiet time for thinking. Display your children’s work, and

emphasize their effort and creative choices.

Creativity can also be promoted by experimenting with new ideas. Allow your children to follow

through on questions they have about the world around them. Permit your children to investigate

the backyard, create a new recipe, or come up with a different way to organize their rooms. When

some of these explorations do not turn out as planned, let your children know that creativity

involves a certain amount of risk, and that mistakes lead to new learning.

In addition, children benefit from parents who model creativity and demonstrate its worth. Share

your own interests such as drawing, writing poetry, or playing an instrument. Think aloud as you

brainstorm solutions to a problem. Visit places such as museums, restaurants, or the library to

incorporate discovery into the family’s daily life.

As you encourage creativity in your children, keep in mind that the creative product is no more

important than the creative process. Learning to practice and persevere will increase a child’s

confidence in their creative abilities.

Greetings from the Library!

Our students in grades K-2 are now participating in the statewide Virginia Readers' Choice contest, along with our students in grades 3-5 that began participating last fall. Every year a committee of educators nominates 10 books at the primary, elementary, middle school, and high school level for this award. They ask students throughout the state to read these books and then vote for their favorite sometime in the spring. It is a very prestigious literary award and one of the only that is chosen entirely by children's votes. Students in grades K-2 will have these books read to them during their weekly library period, while students in grades 3- 5 have the option to read the books on the elementary list on their own. Our students have really been enjoying this year's selections so far.

We have recently added to our library's digital collection. We have purchased more books on CD for primary teachers to use with their students in their listening centers. Playaways, audio books recorded on their own device, are on order and will be arriving later this month for our older students. We have also been given additional money from Loudoun County to purchase E-books for our collection, and those resources will be available to students and teachers soon.

If there are any parents who are looking for volunteer opportunities within our school, please keep the library in mind. You can drop in anytime. We can always use an extra hand, and we provide on the job training!

We start each day at Rosa Lee Carter with a morning news show. Our morning news is directed by fifth graders and reported by fourth graders. Our goal for the morning news is to get students excited for the day and to bring relevant information to our students and staff. We highlight Rosa Lee Carter events, students of the month, Watch D.O.G.S. and we will begin to focus on students’ One to the World projects. There is so much going on in every classroom and we love showcasing what other classes are doing.

For our morning news show, we use Keynote on two iPads. One iPad is the teleprompter, and the other iPad is the remote for the teleprompter which is controlled by one of our reporters so we have smooth dialogue throughout our broadcast.

We are able to use a green screen in our broadcast, and our creative director controls all of the backgrounds, transitions, and sound effects from our Wirecast program.

Our students love the morning news show, and we love making the show every day.

SEAC REPRESENTATIVE TALKING POINTS

January 4, 2017

Presentation by Dr. Jimenez, LCPS Director of Special Education

Dyslexia (Part II) – Services & Support

Dr. Jimenez shared the presentation slides she and John Lody, Director of Diagnostic and Prevention Services presented to the School Board, Student Support Services Committee on December 7, 2016 titled, Assessment, Intervention and Professional Learning. The presentation can be viewed at https://www.lcps.org/Page/86357, Presentation #1. SEAC:

Plan to attend upcoming School Board Budget Meetings or contact the entire School Board at www.lcps.org to advocate for special education staff, programs and services.

To review and reinforce SEAC’s identified priorities and recommendations for students with disabilities, please view the 2016 SEAC Annual Report at www.lcps.org/seac.

PTA liaisons are encouraged to reach out to their PTA Presidents to discuss their PTA’s advocacy plans with regard to the 2018 budget and special education funding.

The next state SEAC meeting will be held on March 30-31, 2017.

The Virginia Dept. of Education (VDOE), in accordance with a new VA law (HB842), will begin requiring all teachers seeking initial licensure or renewal of licensure to complete a one-time awareness online training on the indicators of dyslexia, evidence-based interventions and accommodations. The training module will be available by February 1, 2017. HB842 also calls for the VDOE to collaborate with the State Council of Higher Education for VA to ensure that teacher training programs will cover information on identification of students at risk for dyslexia and other language based disabilities as well as attention deficit disorder. As part of this collaboration, a survey has been developed to ask higher education what they need from the VDOE in order to make this happen. SEAC now has a focus group to explore speech language services and supports. Parents or staff who wish to contribute information about this effort should contact Billie Jo Bevan at [email protected].

LCPS has formed a “Specialized Reading Instruction Stakeholder Advisory Group.” The first meeting will be on Jan. 25, 2017. SEAC Chair, Lorraine Hightower and SEAC Chair of the Dyslexia Subcommittee will attend to represent SEAC.
