Whitewater Rapids Go for Gold
We were offered a fantastic opportunity to enter
a team into the invitation only “Flight Centre
Schools Triathlon” held at Bradfield School on 7th
May.
60 teams from local schools competed throughout the day.
Our Whitewater Rapids team put in an amazing effort to
complete their race in 37 minutes 22 seconds, finishing in
38th place.
The children had to swim 50m, bike 1,000m, and then run
750m in a team relay race format. Everyone got into the
spirit with great enthusiasm and encouragement, especially
the parents!
Our team raised an impressive £446 for charity, which has
been split between Whitewater School’s WWF charity this
year, and Restless Development which is supported by the
organisers.
The Whitewater
Rapids team cele-
brate finishing
with their medals:
Charlie Burridge,
Alex Richardson,
William Pack, Isa-
bel Wilson (team
captain), and James
Burridge.

We love your Village Hall!
Why, once a year, does your lovely village hall become bedecked with the green white and orange flags of Ireland, and filled with vis-itors of many nationalities? The answer lies with a group of enthusiastic dancers who meet reg-ularly in Basingstoke. Those of you who have followed the music, and stuck your heads around the door will already know. We dance a style of dance that has its roots in the courtly quadrilles and cotillions of France but which, through the complex history of our world, migrated to Ireland, where it "evolved" quite a bit! There, it crossed what was then a great class divide, to become a lively part of social life in most communities. Forget Michael Flatley and Riverdance! "Set Dancing" is social danc-ing, not performance, and we dance it for the great pleasure to be had from dancing in harmony with others. We talk a lot, laugh a lot, and move a lot! Let me tell you about the style of movement, which suits dancers of all ages. We have no high and heavy leaping about so, although we dance with some "give" in our legs, there is no need for heavy im-pact on the joints. We rotate a bit, and choose shoes that take full advantage of your hall's beautiful wooden floor. Not special shoes - just comfortable ones with a non-grippy sole. We dance with a partner, but throughout our community dancers are genuinely welcome on their own. We have friends, both men and women, whose partners don't dance, so they come on their own. The community makes sure everyone gets to dance. In summary it is:
Good cardio, low impact exercise A warm and friendly social environment Dance that rewards a bit of mental effort Lively music, tailored to the dances You are welcome to join us to take a closer look. We meet each Thursday at 9pm, in the Basingstoke Irish Centre, Council Road, Basingstoke. Beginners are welcome to come earlier, by arrange-ment, and also welcome to stay later and dance with the main group. If you would like to know more please call Jim or Sue on 01635 253134, or 07776 302137.

Volunteer as the Village Agent Buddy
Why not consider becoming the second Village Agent in
Hook and Rotherwick
You would be volunteering for Age Concern Hampshire to signpost older people to local services and information. You would offer a few hours per week and be fully sup-ported with training sessions and informal get-togethers with other Village Agents across the county.
For further information or to apply please contact:
Village Agent Mandy Butler
on 01256 762008

At Rotherwick on Monday 31st July at noon we will be tolling the
bell in the time honoured way of nine strikes to represent a man
(six for a woman and three a child) and after a pause 100 strikes
to commemorate the centenary of the First World War death
of:-
Thomas William Gunner who died on 31st July 1917. Thomas was
born at Herriard, Hampshire in 1879, the only son of William and
Jane Gunner amongst six sisters.
His father William was a Wheelwright and in 1881 his family were
living at Alton Road, Chawton, Hampshire. They seem to have
moved around the local area quite a bit, presumably following where
William could get work. After living in Farringdon they were living at
Hound Green by 1901.
On the 20th March 1902 at the age of 22 Thomas enlisted in the
Hampshire Regiment. By 1911 he had left the army and returned to
working as a labourer again, living with his parents on the Reading
Road, Hook Cross, Hampshire. His father was still working as a
Wheelwright despite being 73.
When war was declared in 1914 Thomas was 35 and he joined the
11th battalion of the South Wales Borderers. In July 1917 the Battal-
ion were to be part of what was to become known as the Third Bat-
tle of Ypres - Passchendaele. At some point during the assault on
the 31st July Thomas was killed. During the next few days the worst
rainfall in 75 years turned the battle field into a quagmire of thick
mud and many men's bodies were lost to the mud.
Sadly, Thomas was never found and he is commemorated on the
Menin Gate, at Ypres.
Thanks to Andy Cresswell for the research and Martin Barnes for sharing
it with us - Editor.

Recording Flooding in Rotherwick
A Strategic Flood Risk Assessment has been carried out by
Hart District Council in support of the Local Plan. The Flood
Risk Assessment report was published in December 2016
and is available on their website. The report recognises the
surface water as the most significant flood risk to Rotherwick.
Surface water is rain water flowing over the ground that has
not entered a natural channel and water backing up in the
sewer until it emerges from manholes etc. Surface water get-
ting into the sewer has resulted in sewer flooding in Rother-
wick the past and resulted in a programme of work to improve
the sewage system.
Hart District Council can only deal with flooding is-
sues if they know where the flooding occurs and what happened. Details of any flooding that has affected
properties in Rotherwick can be recorded on the Hart
District Flood Survey and will help inform flood risk management activities. Survey data will only be
shared with the following flood risk management au-
thorities: Hampshire County Council (including high-ways), the Environment Agency and Thames Water
and will only be used in relation to flood risk.
For more information on the Flood Survey, please call
the Hart District Flood Risk Infrastructure Engineer on
01252 774210.
