THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

Why I Joined Key Club

Here are a few words from the Class of 2018 Key Clubbers, the newest

edition to the MAST Key Club family!

“I joined Key Club to get service hours.” – Liam Hoagland

“I joined Key Club because I enjoy helping others and usually have the free time to do so.” – Griffin Davis

“I decided to join Key Club because it seemed like a fun, new experience that would benefit other people and organizations that need the help.” - Anonymous

“I joined Key Club because I like helping people and doing community service. Plus, a lot of my friends were doing it too!” – Megan Scafaria

“I joined Key Club because I already did a lot of community service, so I figured might as well keep track of it! (And I also wanted the pin for my uniform.)” – Seth Britton

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

Summer Service in Action by Sianin Spaur

This summer, I participated in the Sandy Hook Summer Program held at MAST. It was held in July and August with a different batch of young students every week, most of them in middle school. I volunteered for one week in July, along with Cassy Keller, Alex Cipas, and Noah Hogan. We went to the MAST campus every morning and acted as aids for the program. Mr. Valente and Mrs. Baskin each had a class, where the students learned about topics like marine biology and coastal geomorphology.

The students conducted a dissection almost every day of the week, including squid, dogfish, clams, etc. They also performed multiple labs in which they

looked at organisms like Euglena under a microscope. As an aid, I helped students identify different parts of the organisms during dissections and assisted them with microscope usage during the labs. Many of them were unfamiliar with using the microscopes, so I was glad to contribute and help them with the task. We also went on trips with them, like to the beach, where we helped them identify different kinds of algae and other organisms, as well as keep them away from certain

restricted areas – which was harder than it may seem when it comes to a large group of preteens. Nonetheless, it was nice to enjoy the beach during such sunny summer weather and it hardly seemed like work.

One of the simplest but most important tasks we performed as aids was grading papers. The students had homework and quizzes each day, so we had to grade all of them and record

their grades accurately. Although this was a tedious task, we found entertainment in some of the students answers and messy handwriting, especially since some of them were barely even in middle school.

Although the tasks like cleaning, grading, and

shepherding distracted middle schoolers for a week may seem like an annoying experience, the summer program was actually a lot of fun. Many of the students were very nice and friendly, if not just entertaining. Meeting a whole class of children every day for the week allowed me to get to know them, and most of them were genuinely good kids who I enjoyed helping. This was an enjoyable and rewarding experience both for the students and the aids, and I will definitely consider volunteering again this summer.

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

A Roaring Rally By Mike Sosa

On Sunday, October 11th , 3,031 key clubbers showed up for Fall Rally. Fall Rally, for those who don't know is a divisional event designed to get everyone excited for the upcoming service year. Located at Six Flags Great Adventure, all of the Key Clubbers are initially gathered together in the concert arena or the waterfront. After an eternity of speeches concerning the district, all of the Key Clubbers are free to roam the park for the rest of the day. This was my fourth Fall Rally and my last as a senior. After rushing out of the arena my friends and I rushed to a few different rides before getting lunch. Afterwards we met up with District Treasurer Daniel Mccormack. However Dan wanted to go on the Safari and we waited for almost two hours in line. After getting on a huge truck that felt like it would tip over at any second

we rode past hundreds of animals roaming the large African plains of Jackson, NJ. After about an half hour we were dropped off at a halfway point in the middle of the safari with no exit. Here they tried to bamboozle you out of even more money with a $5 30 second ride and expensive restaurant. Without an exit we had no choice but to get back on the truck and continue our journey. We had a new guide this time who made very blatant subtle jokes about why 5 male lions and 1 female were put together. He continued to do this for every other animal that followed. After we finally escaped the ride we had no time left before we had to leave. Although that ride was not very enjoyable, it was my last Fall Rally and I did have fun. It will be sad next year when I wont be able to go. Moral of the story: Never go on the Safari.

The Results Are In!

I’d also like to thank the chaperones who supported us: Mrs. Elmiger, Mrs. McCann, Maile’s sister, Mr. Ellithorpe, Ms. Oppito, Señorita, and Mr. Cuttrell. The event not only had a positive impact on the lives of children and mothers with maternal and neonatal tetanus, it impacted me in the best way possible. Friday morning was easily one of the worst experiences of my young life, and the ELIMpics were a great distraction and mood swinger for me. The support of MAST’s Key Club kept me going throughout the day and I have to say that I’ve never felt more proud to be a member of not only a strong, impactful, and servicing club, but of a club that truly cares. Thank you MAST Key Club and I look forward to the rest of a successful year of service! Sincerely, Matthew Schilke MAST Key Club Co-Vice President P.S. If any underclassmen have ideas for fundraisers or service projects do not hesitate to approach me or any other officers. P.P.S. If the ELIMpics sounded fun to you, let us know if you’re interested in competing in another (much better organized) ELIMpics!

As you may or may not have heard, MAST

Key Club hosted the Summer ELIMpics last Friday. The events included biathlon, where participants dealt with a timed relay and shooting targets with Nerf guns, Ultimate, soccer, floor hockey, and dodgeball. Merryment and fun was experienced by all despite a rough start due to scheduling issues and one team dropping out. However, the most important facet of the event is its impact on the lives of many children and mother. As of right now, the event has raised over $800 which equates to nearly 450 children and mothers saved from maternal and neonatal tetanus, a truly horrific. To put everything in perspective we raised enough money to save 450 lives just by having a roughly 3 hour event. The event would not have been possible without MAST’s dedication and support. Maile McCann proved her worth and once again she and I showed that we’re the dynamic duo of MAST Key Club. Cassandra Keller, Kaylie Haberstroh, and LTG Tara Engelken all assisted in the score keeping and tournament bracketing at the event and were absolutely vital for the event’s success. Everyone who came out to the event also contributed greatly to the success and I cannot thank them enough. Team North Dakota composed of Tyler Johnson, Andrew Schussler, Noah Grant, Joey Montague, and Lucas Scinto came in first place winning every event except floor hockey.Team USA came in second and also made an extra contribution of $100 to the Eliminate Project, showing that the event is not all about competition, but the lives we impact.

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

While you may already be a member of our Key Club, are you really benefitting from all it has to offer? Whether or not you get involved in Key Club is entirely up to you!

Getting involved in can definitely be difficult for new Key Clubbers. It is very easy to get overwhelmed at meetings when so many projects and ideas are being discussed. Every Key Clubber has to make an effort to be an efficient member of the club. I have compiled a list of some tips I wish I’d known when I was starting

out in Key Club.

The 4 S t ep Gu i d e t o B e c o m i n g a n A w e s o m e K e y C l u b b e r !

1) Pay attention in meetings!

While this may seem obvious, a lot of different topics are discussed at Key Club general meetings. It’s so easy to forget what was discussed, or simply miss how to sign up for an event and forget all about it. Be aggressive at general meetings; if you hear about a project you’re interested in but don’t know how to get involved, make sure you stay after and talk to the officers and advisors for the information you need.

2) Don’t be afraid to talk to the officers!

Being an underclassman can be very intimidating in a club as large as our Key Club is. If you ever have any questions at all, the Key Club officers are more than willing to help you out! If you’re looking to be an officer in the next few years, getting an understanding of each officer’s job is

very helpful!

3) If “no one else is going”, be an individual! I missed out on more events than I’d like to admit my freshman year simply because no one I knew was going to them. If you go to a Key Club event alone, I can guarantee that you’ll come home with one new friend at the very least.

4) Most importantly, have fun!

Key Club is an awesome organization with many amazing opportunities to offer. The projects we have are always fun, and everything we do goes towards helping others.

BONUS District convention is so

fun go to it. You’ll definitely hear more about it when it gets

closer!
