THE SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER, 2013 SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL, A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL PAGE 1 Principal’s Update Brad Coscare!i, SRHS Principal, bcoscare![email protected] , 528-5292 Dear Parents and Guardians, I would like to start by thanking everyone for a great start to the school year. It is amazing to think that our school is now celebrating our 140 th year of service to this great community! Due to our strong academics and our vocational, art and athletics programs, we are once again over 2,000 students strong, with Santa Rosa High School ocially closed to new students due to our large population. We are again celebrating high test scores in our Advanced Placement classes and in our State and Federal testing, strong graduation rates and students who are happy to be at Santa Rosa High School. I want to extend my congratulations to our two educators of the year, Mrs. Kathy Ramos and Mr. Jim Helmer. They were honored at the Sonoma County Teacher of the Year breakfast held at the Flamingo Hotel last month. We are proud to have such fine educators as part of our great faculty. Please remember that we need to work together to have our students achieve success. Speak to your children nightly about school. Check their homework. Keep them organized with the use of their planner. Planners are free and were given to every student at the beginning of the year. Go through the planner with them to learn about dierent topics including high school graduation, requirements for our State and U.C. college systems, school safety, facilities, oces and school rules. Get them to school on time, having had a healthy breakfast. At school, have them get involved in something in which they are interested. We have free tutoring for all students in all curricular areas every Tuesday and Thursday in room 143. For further information, we have a wonderful school website at santarosahighschool.net to visit. There, you can find athletic schedules, copies of our Panther Purr and student handbook, counseling and other school related information. Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to start by thanking everyone for a great start to the school year. It is amazing to think that our school is now celebrating our 140th year of service to this great community! Due to our strong academics and our vocational, art and athletics programs, we are once again over 2,000 students strong, with Santa Rosa High School officially closed to new students due to our large population.

We are proud to have such fine

educators as part of our great faculty.

Please remember that we need to work together to have our students achieve success. Speak to your children nightly about school. Check their homework. Keep them organized with the use of their planner. Planners are free and were given to every student at the beginning of the year. Go through the planner with them to learn about different topics including high school graduation, requirements for our State and U.C. college systems, school safety, facilities, offices and school rules.

Sincerely,

Graduation Policy (Board Policy 6146)There is a board policy which affects the current Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The policy is posted on the SRHS website (www.santarosahighschool.net) under the counseling section for your review in both English and Spanish.

Student PlannersEvery student was provided a free planner at the beginning of the school year. This planner is provided to assist your student in keeping organized and apprised of important dates and information. This planner contains information on clubs and activities, graduation requirements, college entrance exams (PSAT, SAT & ACT), UC/CSU entrance requirements, state and federal testing, school rules and regulations. Please review this planner with your student.

PSAT/NMSQTAttention, college-bound Juniors! The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is only given on Saturday, October 19. This standardized test provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test and Writing Test. It also gives students a chance to qualify for National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s scholarship programs. The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:

• Prepare for the SAT Reasoning Test• Qualify for scholarships (if your student is in the eleventh grade)• Compare scores with other college-bound students around the country• Forecast SAT scores• Get personalized feedback on skill strengths and weaknesses

The PSAT/NMSQT will only be offered by SRHS on October 19. Registration will take place October 1-18 in the Business Office. The test fee is $20.

Getting back to school on the right foot is important to the success of your student. Being organized, prepared and prompt are on the same list as eating healthy food and getting enough sleep. These points all work as a group, and when you put them all together, your student can’t help but succeed. One sure way of getting organized is to shop at Staples for your school supplies. Staples has a fantastic give back program that will support SRHS through the school year. When checking out, simply give the phone number 707-528-5292 and 5% of the purchase goes back to the school. This is good throughout the year. Or if you are a rewards member go to: http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/back-to-school/resources-for-teachers/classroom-rewards.html#linkrewards. When you get to the teachers name, type in “Coscarelli,” then “California,” and you can link them up. When you attach SRHS to your existing rewards account, the school will receive an extra 2% on top of the 5%. This is a big bonus for the teachers and goes on throughout the year. Win-win!

As you may know, this is the 140th anniversary of SRHS, and the STP is spearheading a campaign to raise money to buy desks and some new floor mats. 140 years, $140 for 140 desks. Look for the donation form located in the Panther Purr. The desk you help purchase could be the one your student sits in! Stayed tuned for additional info on this throughout the next few months.

This is going to be a busy year with a lot going on in many directions, and we are going to need parent involvement. If you are new to the school, this is a primo way to meet and make new friends. If you have been here a while but have not taken that step, make this your year. Students continue to be more successful when their parents are involved, and being involved is rewarding in so many ways. If you are interested in any volunteer position, contact Stacy Mertz at [email protected].

For general information, visit our wonderful new website: www.srhsstp.org.

I hope your family has a great school year and I look forward to meeting you.

ArtQuestAnd ArtQuest Turns 20!ArtQuest is now 20 years old! Beginning two decades ago with about 60 students and just two Arts Specialties - Visual Fine Arts and what was then called Multimedia (which has evolved into Digital Arts and Video Arts with the explosion of all types of digital media) - ArtQuest now has about 525 students and offers eight different Arts Specialties, four in Visual and four in Performing Arts. In conjunction with the 20-year Anniversary, AQ will focus on more outreach to AQ alumni and will work to bring more alumni input and involvement into the program. Look for more about this as the year progresses. IMPORTANT! If you were a past AQ student or know of one, please tell them that we are looking for them and want them to get involved! Visit the soon-to-be-improved AQ Facebook page for more details and further contacts, or call the AQ Office at 535-4842 or email AQ Director Jan Sofie at [email protected].

Toward a More Perfect Union…Never content to rest, even after 20 years, the AQ interdisciplinary theme this year will look at not only what has worked within AQ’s own union of educational and artistic purpose but at how things can be revised and developed to become more effective. The theme will also consider all kinds of interpretations and manifestations of the successes, benefits, challenges and drawbacks of the concept of union, not to mention how any kind of union can grow to be more responsive to its members and purposes (or sometimes the opposite!). Linking learning to a central theme has been an important way that AQ has supported students in thinking about issues and topics in ways that are connected to many disciplines and parts of life, including those within the personal, social and political realms. The AQ theme is often used as “a seed idea” for making works of art in the program and connecting ideas. Just a few of the essential questions that may be posed within this thematic frame are: Can a perfect union of any kind ever be achieved and is that goal a desirable one, or is imperfection leading to innovation and change even more useful? What ways does any kind of union support and/or impede achievement and development of the individual and the group- at-large or are these goals always at cross-purposes? How is ArtQuest in unison within itself as a program and also with other parts of the school and the greater community? AQ teachers will approach this theme in a multitude of ways and AQ students will continue to expand from there, as always! Past themes have included Renaissance (2012-13), We’re Not in Kansas Anymore (11-12), Project Earth (08-09), Child of Our Time (01-02), The War Requiem Project (98-99), Beauty and the Beast (04-05), Atticus (05-06), The Passage (99-00), Co!ective Invention (03-04) and The Coexistence of Order and Chaos (95-96). Look for more information soon from students’ AQ Specialty and Core class courses.

Entry into AQ Might Still Be Possible THIS Fall %% Selected Arts Specialty areas and levels in ArtQuest may still have openings for fall 2013 for students who are already attending Santa Rosa High School. If you are interested in applying, do it right away! Pick up an AQ Application Packet NOW in the AQ Office in Room 21 in the Arts Complex or call AQ at 535-4842 for information. ArtQuest offers motivated students an exceptional opportunity to learn important visual and performing arts skills, creative problem solving, critical thinking approaches and positive habits of mind that also readily connect to many areas of education and life beyond the Arts. Many AQ alumni have gone on to prestigious colleges and universities and exciting creative careers. If you have a secret (or not-so-secret!) interest in any of the arts, we’d love to have you join our unique community. Contact us right away to see if this is still a possibility!

$10,000 Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship to Theatre Arts AlumnaMadeline (“Maddie”) Rouverol, AQ/SRHS 2013 alumna, won the $10,000 Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship in the category of acting this June. She plans to use the award toward her education in the performing arts at the University of Michigan. The long-running, smash hit revue at Club Fugazi in San Francisco sponsors the awards and selects nine high school senior finalists from the greater Bay Area (defined to include Sacramento!) out of hundreds of applicants. These nine finalists perform in the live competition at Club Fugazi, with three each in the categories of Dance, Singing and Acting. The competition evening on June 3rd opened with a welcome by past S.F. mayor, Willie Brown, and performances by the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon before each of the nine finalists performed. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Oldies103.7's Don Bleu and the celebrity panel of judges included luminaries from top performing arts organizations such as the San Francisco Opera, California Shakespeare Theater, American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Oberlin Dance Collective, San Francisco Symphony and also entertainer M.C. Hammer! Last year, two ArtQuest alumni were also chosen as two of the nine finalists (Nick Chuba and Kelsey Tarantino) with Nick also winning the scholarship for acting. Huge congratulations to Maddie Rouverol on her amazing accomplishment – we are so proud of her! Her performance was supported by her family, friends, many other AQ Theatre Arts students and AQ Director Jan Sofie cheering from the audience. We also want to recognize the AQ Theatre Arts teachers, Vicki Carpenter and John Craven for their excellent work with Maddie and all the Theatre Arts students over many years. IMPORTANT NOTE: Entry forms and guidelines for the 2014 Scholarship wi! be available in February, 2014 on the Beach Blanket Babylon website.

Don’t miss the AQ Fall Showcase and the great things students are doing, and have been doing for 20 year in arts education, right here at SRHS! Call the AQ Office at 535-4842 or email [email protected] for more information.

4th Annual AQ Arts & Liberal Arts College Day On the Move ArtQuest is moving the 4th Annual AQ Arts and Liberal Arts College Day to a new location and a new month this year. The event is slated for Thursday, January 16 at the contiguous Finley/Person Centers in Santa Rosa. The date was moved so that it was scheduled between the San Francisco and Los Angeles National Portfolio Days, in order to help attract even more colleges from all over the US and beyond. Many prestigious, well-known Arts and Liberal Arts colleges, universities and departments have already confirmed participation in the AQ event. The Finley/Person facilities were chosen because they provide excellent, dedicated spaces for various kinds of activities and presentations and lots of options and resources to help make the AQ event more successful and better than ever! Stay tuned for more details later this semester. We are looking for contributions and sponsors. If you are interested in contributing to the funding of this event or would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact AQ Director, Jan Sofie directly at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support of this valuable event.

Video Arts Student, Angelo Iervolino Clinches AwardAngelo Iervolino, AQ Video Arts student, was named one of the seven winners of the 2012-13 “Pillars for Excellence Award” by the No. California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. High schools in the chapter’s region from Visalia to the Oregon border, and to Nevada and Hawaii submitted works. The award for excellence is an engraved glass pillar and is presented to each winning school. Angelo’s piece, “Priceless,” was entered in the Music Video category. NATAS Education Chair, Steve Shlisky of KTVU Channel 2, was excited to see new schools participating this year. He said, “This year’s entries were among the best we have ever judged.” Congratulations on another excellent job, Angelo! We all look forward to your next project.

Two AQ VFA Alumni Make Artistic Presence Known Catherine Sieck (2010 graduate) had a large-scale installation of paper cut-outs exhibited over the summer at the restaurant, Spinster Sisters, located in the SOFA (South A Street) District of Santa Rosa. She is now painting a large-scale mural in a similar cut-out style on the side of the restaurant building interpreting the real spinster sisters who were said to have resided upstairs in the vintage building during its early days in the 1930s. The installation pieces were each several layers of intricately cut, colored paper floating in handmade shadow boxes. Every piece in the exhibition sold, and the restaurant was so impressed that it commissioned Catherine to do the large, 16-foot mural.

She is also currently working on a letterpress edition of the mural image and some of the other pieces from the show as a collaboration with Peach Farm Studio. Catherine has also received several other paper-cut commissions and installations, including a set design for the Rivertown Revival festival in Petaluma. She is developing a shadow-puppet show with Emile Rosewater (a member of The Imaginists) to bring the paper-cut medium to life, which will be performed at the Imaginists Theater in Santa Rosa the first weekend of September (call the theater for information). The show is about American archetypes, myths, and preconceptions, and what happens when those meet with reality. The pair also hope to eventually take the show on the road, performing and collecting stories to incorporate so that it also becomes an evolving, growing documentation of their own travels, the people they meet and experiences they have. Catherine has studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and is planning to continue her education at the California College of Art in the SF Bay Area. Visit http://catherinemariesieck.tumblr.com to see more about her work.

Another AQ VFA alumna, Cleo Malone (2013), had her first solo show this summer at EPIC Design Build Studio on West 6th Street in Santa Rosa. The show featured Cleo's work from the past three years, which ranged greatly in size, media, style and concept. This fall Cleo is attending Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She has also studied at the California State Summer School for the Arts, at Cal Arts, Valencia, Maryland Institute College of Art, The Oxbow School in Napa, Ca, and, of course, ArtQuest at Santa Rosa High School!

September 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the SRHS Library

Sonoma County Project Graduation was founded in 1987 in response to increasing drug and alcohol use among students on their graduation night – statistically the most dangerous night of the year for young people.  Inspired by an alcohol and drug-free party thrown by Sonoma Valley High School, the very first Project Grad was organized for five Santa Rosa schools by a group that included CHP of f icers , MADD members , 4H representatives, and other community leaders. Since then, the efforts have spread from the Santa Rosa district to eighteen schools across Sonoma County.

As we enter the 2013 season, the boy’s soccer program is excited and motivated in making this season one to remember. Expectations amongst the players and coaches are very optimistic. Our players have been preparing for the season since early July. We believe we have the personnel and drive to be successful both in and outside the classroom.

Our preseason schedule consists of many notable and competitive teams, including hosting the defending NCS champion Tamalpais. Our schedule also includes Sir Francis Drake, Analy, El Molino, Fort Bragg, Elsie Allen, Piner, and Healdsburg. In addition, we have our annual Alumni game where our players get a chance to play against former players. Lastly, we are looking to improve our standing from the past two seasons and believe we something to prove.

We now find ourselves with a veteran team looking to compete for a playoff spot with the rest of the North Bay League. Our senior players who are returning for their last season at SRHS include: Thomas Tangley, Bryan Juarez, Jonathan Lugo, Diego Morfin, Urbano Ortiz, Hector Rangel and Angel Palomares. As expected, seniors play a vital role to any success we will have in the upcoming season, and I look forward to seeing this group take our program to the next level.

We are looking forward to the season, and to all the challenges and successes we may encounter. Please come out and support our boys and girls soccer programs this fall on our beautiful new turf field.

Go Panthers!Santa Rosa High School will be celebrating its 140th birthday this year of excellence in academics and sports programs. We are proud of the EXCELLENT student athletes of our past, the FANTASTIC athletes who currently attend SRHS, and the AMAZING Panther Athletes of our future.

Both the Boys and Girls Spring Sports Programs at Santa Rosa High School have had many successes, as a team, and as individuals. Our Track and Field Program celebrated many successes in the spring. The Girls Track and Field Program won the NBL Title. Along with this title, two girls went on to compete at the State Level in Fresno; Sadia Ibrahim, 800m and Morgan Bertsch, high jump. Sadia finished 10th in the State of California and will continue to train and participate in Track and Field at UCLA. Morgan Bertsch finished 13th in the State of California and will be returning as a Senior at SRHS, this year.

SRHS girls Track and Field were heavy in their selection, this year, in All League Choices. Most will be returning to SRHS, this year to compete.

SRHS is proud to announce that our Coach, Lauren Liotta, was awarded Coach of the Year for Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving. Ms. Liotta is expecting twins in the fall, early winter. We are so happy for her and her family. Thank you for all you give to SRHS as a teacher and as a Coach.

SRHS Cross Country 2013Forty-seven athletes, thirteen counselors and five coaches attended the 26th annual Santa Rosa High Cross Country Camp at Burlington campground at Humboldt Redwoods State Park, located in Weott, California about 175 miles north of Santa Rosa. Camp took place from July 28 to August 2. As always, it was a spirited affair with amazing running and team cohesion. Ten freshmen participated in this epic endeavor, and though they knew no one other than themselves before camp they easily bonded with the entire team at camp’s end.

The talent show on the evening before departure, once again, demonstrated the talent and good humor that accompanies our team throughout the season.

The running by our team was impressive, with many all-time top ten efforts time-wise in our camp runs. Sophomore girl Delaney White and Freshman boy Daniel Pride ran the second fastest times in camp history to the peak of Grasshopper, a 3000 foot high climb, 7-mile long run. No level spots or downhills on this run. Just amazing.

Twelve counselors from the class of 2012 were in attendance, as well as a 2011 graduate. Coaches included Carrie Joseph, Matt Taylor, Sean Fitzpatrick, and David Kimari and me. Sean is the head Cross Country coach at Sonoma State and David is the head coach at Tech High. No matter, the two Panther alums and former SRHS coaches could not stay away from our camp. Our spirit is high and our team is prepared for one great season of running and challenges. Doug Courtemarche

Badminton All-Empire Boy Player of the YearThe Press Democrat All-Empire Badminton Boys Player of the Year was Alex Trinh, a June graduate from SRHS. Although he only took up badminton in high school, his nearly perfect past two seasons (one loss) was an amazing accomplishment on the court.

During his high school years, Trinh participated in cross country, wrestling, basketball and track & field in addition to badminton, but it was badminton that captured his heart.

“I grew a passion for badminton. It was the sport I fell in love with,” Trinh said. “I always looked forward to the next season.

Following his freshman year, he became be the top singles player at SRHS the next three seasons, earning All-Empire honors each year. He spent hours in the gym working to bring his game to the next level. Focusing on badminton his senior year, Trinh found that his talent and smarts made him a player that was hard to beat.

“In badminton you have to be pretty quick and precise,” Trinh said.

After valet parking at Bohemian Grove this summer, Trinh will take his experience in the family garage and high school auto shop to Universal Technical Institute, in Sacramento, with plans to specialize in BMWs.
