Composition will be discussed greatly. You should bring photos of anything: other artists' works that you admire, images of your own works, images of something you might paint. These photos are for benefit of composition discussion. Materials Fee: $25 includes consumable supplies like paper towels, thinning medium (oil of spike), brush soap, brush cleaner/paint thinner. The Instructor: Valerie lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and has been a professional artist, working in television since 1979. In 2000, she left her job with the CTV affiliate to paint full time. One of her earlier commercial exhibitions was with the U.S. Arabian National Horse Show in Louisville, KY. There, she took a tour of Churchill Downs, where she viewed an exhibit of the works by the American Academy of Equine Art for the first time. She eagerly submitted work to future AAEA shows, where within two years, she gratefully accepted the 1992 Gordon Bar- ton Memorial Award for Best in Show. Valerie attributes the AAEA for giving her the start she needed in the equine art world. The publicity received from her wins through the AAEA juried exhibitions helped her to become visible to the galleries that represent her today. Her artistic achievements, publications and galleries are too numerous to list here. She is a full member of the American Academy of Equine Artists. Valerie rarely chooses to do commissions, but accepted to do so for the 1999 Queen's Plate winner for Woodbine Race Track in Toronto, Canada. She was the official artist for 2003 Breed- ers' Cup at Santa Anita, California. Valerie also received the coveted “Artists Choice” award at the 2009 Calgary Stampede. Carving a Bighorn Sheepwith Byron Crabb

The Course: As a muscular mountain dweller, the bighornsheep is agile and nimble, moving quickly over uneven steepterrain. The males are renowned for spectacular head crashingcompetitions.

You will carve a male bighorn sheep on his rocky environ-ment. This basswood piece may be finished with stains, or maybe painted.

You will learn practical artistic understanding of anatomy forthis, and other animal sculpting projects.

For twenty years Byron has been carving and sculpting inwood, moose antler, stone, bone, ivory and clay. His artistryhas been exhibited in many galleries, has won numerousawards including Best of Shows, and is present in both corpo-rate and private collections throughout Canada and the UnitedStates. Watercolour Painting: Wild Birds in the Landscape with Elaine L. Muth

The Course: The art of painting in watercolours secured its place in theworld of art expressions quite early, pre-dating both oil painting andacrylics. Transparency is the almost magical effect of true watercolourpainting, yet this feature entails potentially great technical difficulties.Since it is practically impossible to obliterate a colour by applying an-other over it, as is possible in other media, an accurate sketch is a must. Therefore drawing instruction will be included in this course. You willlearn the many advantages of watercolour techniques and methods withdaily demonstrations and detailed examples. Previous training in water-colour is preferred, but beginners are welcome. Instruction includes:• Colour application - direct painting, flat & graduated washes, linear andradial gradients, dry brush, layering and glazing; removing colour, paint-ing in half-covering & mixing on paper.• Colour theory & selection - shaded colour; colour quality, comple-ments, colour temperature, emotional value of colour, colour perspec-tive, tonal relation, contrast (chiaroscuro).• Subject matter - Composition and designing the picture plane, spatialdepth; proportion scale and mass; stages in landscape painting;anatomy of trees and birds; capture the moving form with kinestheticline & brush techniques.

Materials Fee: $25.00 includes special-use supplies and resource ma-terial. Students must supply all of their own basic materials; a supply listwill be provided upon registration.

The Instructor: Using the ever versatile and dependable medium ofwatercolour, Elaine L. Muth has recorded her experience of the flora, fauna, bio-geography and domestic architecture of many cultures &countries worldwide, including: France, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece,Morocco, Egypt, Malta, Atlantic & Pacific coasts, New Mexico & theCaribbean. Entranced by the wild birdsong, rolling landscape and vividlight of the Great Plains region where she was born and raised, Muthbegan a varied artistic practice by the age of 9, which continues today.Early tuition in drawing, calligraphy, science, dance and music becamethe framework for a 4 decade career as painter, graphic and 3D de-signer, scientific illustrator and art educator/mentor. These lifelong pur-suits continiue to inspire her current interests in martial arts, the pianomusic of Eric Satie, Bach & Chopin, and the production of a large bodyof travel art. In 2000, while employed as a scientific illustrator at the col-lege of medicine, U of S, Muth received a grant to attend university inVenice, Italy and there studied the work of Leonardo da Vinci and otherearly anatomists. Muth’s professional experience as scientific illustratorspans the disciplines of archeology, plant taxonomy, and health sci-ences: dentistry, neuro science, gross anatomy and cell biology re-search. Muth’s paintings, drawings and calligraphy have been includedin group and solo exhibitions across Canada. She is included in “The Bi-ographical Dictionary of Saskatchewan Artists” and in “ABC Canada:The First Contemporary Collection of Canadian Calligraphy”, 1996.
