Quotation, Allusion, and Echo in the Synoptic GospelsNick Elder

    4.16.2011The Iliff School of Theology

In addition to the citation of 1 Enoch in Jude, that some of the Pseudepigrapha were readas sacred Scripture in the early church is demonstrated by the use of the Greek Scripturesin the NT writings, the inclusions of some of these books in the Greek biblical codices,

allusions throughout the NT corpus, and the continuing inclusion of these books in thelists of Scripture by the early church fathers. (R. Timothy McLay, The Use of theSeptuagint in the New Testament in The Biblical Canon, 231.)

It is essential that we examine carefully both the NT writings and the early churchfathers on how each source is quoted, cited, or alluded to before drawing conclusions

about the scope and identity of Jesus sacred ScripturesOnly after carefully examiningeach context can we draw responsible conclusions about how such ancient references

were viewed by their users. (Lee McDonald,The Biblical Canon

    , 192)

Instructions:In your groups compare, first, the intertextual relationships McDonald proposes between

non-canonical literature and the gospels and, second, the intertextual relationships

between the LXX and the gospels. In your groups answer/discuss the following

questions:-How would you classify the relationship? As quotation? Allusion? Echo? Something

    else?

-Why do you classify the relationship this way? (Verbal resonances? Ideologicalresonances?)

-How does the evoked text function in the alluding text? In other words, why is the text

utilized? What does it gain the author? (It may be helpful to look at the larger context)

Questions for Discussion:-How convinced are you that there is a relationship between the gospel writers and the

non-canonical material presented by McDonald? What does this relationship look like?-What does a quoting a text say about that texts authority? What does alluding to a textsay about its authority? What does echoing a text say about its authority?-How much resonance do two texts have to have in order to be considered in a causal

    relationship?

-What can quotations, allusions, and echoes tell us about the authority of various texts for

the NT authors?-Do quotations, allusions, and echoes inform the process of canonization of the HB?
