(stand)

OPENING HYMN “Lift High the Cross” LSB 837, vv. 1-3

(refrain) Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore His sacred name.

Come, Christians, follow where our Captain trod, our king victorious, Christ, the Son of God. (refrain)

Led on their way by this triumphant sign, the hosts of God in conqu’ring ranks combine. (refrain)

All newborn soldiers of the Crucified bear on their brows the seal of Him who died. (refrain)

INVOCATION

(The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.)

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

(sit)

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.

We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and as your pastor, I declare to you the full and free forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen. KYRIE – Lord, Have Mercy Mark 10:47 LSB p 152

P In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy. P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C Amen.

T SERVICE OF THE WORD T

THE FOUNDATION

P The Bible, we hold, is God’s Word from cover to cover; C it makes me wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ;

P it is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training us how to live; C I need to read, listen, and learn from this foundation of truth laid forth

by God.

OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 35:4-7a

4Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you.”

5Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6Then will the lame leap like deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE James 2:1-10, 14-18

1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of Him to whom you belong?

8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. …

14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 7:24-37

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet He could not keep His presence secret. 25In fact, as soon as she heard about Him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came fell at His feet. 26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27“First let the children eat all they want,” He told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.”

28“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29Then He told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. 31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the

Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32There some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Him to place His hand on the man.

33After He took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”). 35At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak plainly.

36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more He did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

NICENE CREED LSB p 174

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

T SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT T (stand)

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH – after each petition:

P Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; C His steadfast love endures forever.

LORD’S PRAYER

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD LSB p 179

P Our LORD Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

SHARING OF THE PEACE

P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you.

DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION

In accordance with Holy Scripture, and out of loving concern for all, we believe in the biblical practice of Close Communion. This means, those are welcome to the Lord’s Table who believe the basic teachings of the Lutheran church listed below:

1. Have been instructed in God’s Word, especially the Apostles’ Creed, Ten Commandments and Holy Sacraments;

2. Confess and repent of all their sins;

3. Believe that in and with the bread and wine, they receive in a miraculous way, not merely a symbol, but the true body and blood of Christ, for the forgiveness of their sins and the strengthening of their faith;

4. Recognize that participation at His table indicates a public agreement with the Biblical teaching of the Sacrament as we teach and confess, and an oneness in faith with fellow communicants.

If you have any questions, we respectfully ask you to visit with one of the pastors before receiving Holy Communion.

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

“Preach You the Word” LSB 586

Preach you the Word and plant it home to men who like or like it not, the Word that shall endure and stand when flow’rs and men shall be forgot.

We know how hard, O Lord, the task Your servant bade us undertake: to preach Your Word and never ask what prideful profit it may make.

The sower sows; his reckless love scatters abroad the goodly seed, intent alone that all may have the wholesome loaves that all men need.

Though some be snatched and some be scorched and some be choked and matted flat,

the sower sows; his heart cries out, “Oh, what of that, and what of that?”

Of all his scattered plenteousness one-fourth waves ripe on hill and flat, and bears a harvest hundredfold: “Ah, what of that, Lord, what of that!”

Preach you the Word and plant it home and never faint; the Harvest Lord who gave the sower seed to sow will watch and tend His planted Word.

“O Lord, We Praise Thee” LSB 617

O Lord, we praise Thee, bless Thee, and adore Thee, in thanksgiving bow before Thee.

Thou with Thy body and Thy blood didst nourish our weak souls that they may flourish: O Lord, have mercy!

May Thy body, Lord, born of Mary, that our sins and sorrows did carry, and Thy blood for us plead in all trial, fear, and need:

O Lord, have mercy!

Thy holy body into death was given, life to win for us in heaven. No greater love than this to Thee could bind us;

may this feast thereof remind us! O Lord, have mercy! Lord, Thy kindness did so constrain Thee

that Thy blood should bless and sustain me. all our debt Thou hast paid; peace with God once more is made:

O Lord, have mercy!

May God bestow on us His grace and favor that we follow Christ our Savior and live together here in love and union nor despise this blest Communion!

O Lord, have mercy! Let not Thy good Spirit forsake us; grant that heav’nly-minded He make us; give Thy Church, Lord, to see days of peace and unity: O Lord, have mercy!

POST-COMMUNION BLESSING

(stand)

BENEDICTION

P The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious unto you; the Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. C Amen.

CLOSING HYMN “Hark, the Voice of Jesus Crying” LSB 826, vv. 1, 2, & 4

Hark, the voice of Jesus crying, “Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting—who will bear the sheaves away?”

Loud and long the Master calleth; rich reward He offers thee. Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I, send me, send me”?

If you cannot speak like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, you can say He died for all.

If you cannot rouse the wicked with the judgment’s dread alarms, you can lead the little children to the Savior’s waiting arms.

Let none hear you idly saying, “There is nothing I can do,” while the multitudes are dying and the Master calls for you.

Take the task He gives you gladly, let His work your pleasure be; answer quickly when He calleth, “Here am I, send me, send me!”

P We enter to worship; C We exit to witness.
