1. Lesson Preparation: Planning a lesson that meets the critical criteria of effective instruction for English language learners (ELLs)

2. Building Background: Linking background knowledge and previously learned information to new learning and explicitly teaching the vocabulary to access the new learning

3. Comprehensible Input: Making the lesson and learning understandable through a variety of means

4. Strategies: Teaching students a variety of learning strategies that facilitate the learning process
