THE SIX VILLAGES NEWSLETTER

A view from the cat world As an unashamed lover of cats I like to ponder on the unwitting aura of wisdom which surrounds them. We as humans are very good at constantly doing but not so good at just being and absorbing. Perhaps we could learn a thing or two from our feline friends. A few quotes for you to ponder on: • Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a

purpose. Garrison Keillor • Cats seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to

ask for what you want. Joseph Wood Krutch • In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not

forgotten this. Terry Pratchett • Cats have it all; admiration, endless sleep, and company only

when they want it. Rod McKuen • Way down deep, we’re all motivated by the same urges. Cats

have the courage to live by them. Jim Davis • A cat has absolute emotional honesty; human beings, for one

reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not. Ernest Hemingway

• It always gives me a shiver when I see a cat seeing what I can’t see. Eleanor Farjeon

• The ideal of calm exists in a sitting cat. Jules Renard • You can not look at a sleeping cat and feel tense. Jane Pauley • The mathematical probability of a common cat doing exactly as it

pleases is the one scientific absolute in the world. Lynn M. Osband • There are people who reshape the world by force or argument, but

the cat just lies there, dozing, and the world quietly reshapes itself to suit his comfort and convenience. Allen and Ivy Dodd

• Cats always know whether people like or dislike them. They do not always care enough to do anything about it. Winifred Carriere

• If there is one spot of sun spilling onto the floor, a cat will find it and soak it up. Joan Asper McIntosh

• Cats can be cooperative when something feels good, which, to a cat, is the way everything is supposed to feel as much of the time as possible. Roger Caras

I hope you’ve enjoyed these insights. They may make you laugh and I hope will certainly give you food for thought.

Local Club / Society News

Breckland Flower & Garden Club Despite the sun shining brightly outside, May’s meeting was once again full of enthusiastic flower arrangers and friends. The demonstrator for the meeting was Jenni Baker, the title “Whiskers on Kittens”. Jenni told us that she had taken her inspiration from the song “My Favourite Things” because today she would be using her favourite things to create the arrangements. Jenni made six beautiful floral arrangements at the same time sharing witty tales of flower demonstrations and her family. Seven lucky raffle winners took Jenni’s arrangements home. A final mention must go to our Chairperson, Christine Hewson, as sadly her Mother Kitty Patrick passed away this week age 95, a founder member of the Club, and to member Margery Greenwood who’s husband also passed away earlier this month. Our thoughts are with them and their families. The next meeting will be at Old Buckenham Village Hall on June 9th at 2pm There will be a talk on Delphiniums by Howard Norton. The Fower Arranging Competition will be ‘Garden Colour’. All Welcome. Visitors £4 For further details contact Christine 01953 454528 or Sally 01953 788712. y

Attleborough & District Horticultural Society At the April meeting of Attleborough Horticultural Society Peter Firman welcomed members and visitors. He then introduced the speaker for the evening Frank Lampbert. Frank has grown fuchsias for over 20 years. There are over 1200 fuchsias registered with as many again that are not. He explained the type of compost which is most suitable for the plants and how to take cuttings, which he takes in October and over winters in the greenhouse. He also spoke about various ways to both prevent diseases with red spider being the worst pest for fuchsias. Frank then showed slides of different types of fuchsias, including many of his award winning plants. He said that plants need to be ‘dressed’ for showing and that could take a least an hour per plant. Peter thanked Frank for a most enjoyable and informative talk. The next meeting is on Wednesday 15th June at 7.30pm in Attleborough Junior School, Besthorpe Road, where the Rose and Sweet Pea Show will take place. Exhibits can be staged from 6.30pm to 7pm. Visitors are very welcome.

Bunwell Camera Club We meet at the Tibenham Community Hall on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 8pm. Bunwell & District Camera Club is a small friendly club. We welcome new members. For details see http://www.bdcameraclub.co.uk/

Garden Jottings from Ken

How about opening your garden to the public or having it photographed for a prestigious glossy lifestyle magazine? Is it up to standard? Would it impress the viewer? Think about it, would you dare let them see in or not? You don’t have to have a show garden, but you should have a garden to show, at least to family and friends, your own tranquil space to relax in and enjoy, that’s tidy and welcoming, a garden to be just a little bit proud of. Whatever state your garden is in, nothing focuses the mind like a deadline, so use your imagination and conjure up a function that will take place in your garden, set a date and tell somebody that on this day your garden will be looking great and you’ll prove it with a photograph or maybe allow them to visit and see for themselves. Begin by looking outside at what you’ve got already and consider what you realistically wish to have. If your garden is established there may not be major changes to be carried out, but improvements can certainly be made, however if all or part of your garden is in need of updating the task may seem a bit daunting - don’t panic, one step at a time! Start with a good all round tidy-up, if it’s stored rubbish get rid of it, remove any dead plant material, cut and edge the grass then sweep paths and patios. Look at shrubs, trees and climbers to decide if any pruning is required (you may have to sacrifice some of this summer’s flowers ), then feed everything. Now it’s time for the exciting stage by making your plan a reality, perhaps creating new borders, adding some height with an ornamental tree or archway, and of course getting creative with some fresh planting! A visit to The Garden Enclosure will provide all you need to transform your garden, from practical necessities such as pots, quality composts, tools and ornaments, to inspiring plants of all kinds, including traditional favourites plus beautiful newcomers, all at excellent prices and if you need some planting suggestions just ask. It’s open garden season, these are always worth a visit as a source of ideas, events take place locally so take time out to visit a few, and with a little bit of effort your garden will look so wonderful you may just want to show off yours as well!

Cheers, Ken The Garden Enclosure, Banham - helping to make your garden better!

Jane Austen Society Dear residents, I am hoping to establish a local branch of the Jane Austen Society to examine the genius of one of our most brilliant authors of 200 years ago. Her most celebrated works include Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Persuasion. In all her novels there is a brilliant exposition of characters and attitudes that are still relevant today. On reading her novels one can immediately capture a person or character existing today in village and small town life. Sentiments are laid bare for all to see. Her last, quite short, novel Sandition was completed only 2 months before her death from illness in 1817. The novels also depict the culture and attitudes of the Bonarparte and post Bonarparte clash in England, a time in which only gentleman and ladies were referred to leaving servants and workers hardly mentioned at all. The novels also reflect the impact of the emerging industrial revolution. If anyone is interested please contact me. Tel: 01953 860388 or email [email protected] Tim Bornett

Perfect prescription for our NHS! The Royal College of Nursing has weighed in on David Cameron's health care proposals for the NHS. The allergists voted to scratch it, but the dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. The gastroenterologist had a sort of gut feeling about it, but the neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve. The obstetricians felt they were labouring under a misconception. Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted. Pathologists yelled 'Over my dead body!' While the paediatricians said: 'Oh, grow up!' The psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the radiologists could see right through it. The surgeons were fed up with the cuts and decided to wash their hands of the whole thing. The ear, nose and throat specialists didn't swallow it and just wouldn't hear of it. The pharmacists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow and the plastic surgeons said: 'This puts a whole new face on the matter...' The podiatrists thought it a step forward but the urologists were.peeved.at the whole idea. The anaesthetists thought it a gas but the cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. Kay Hevey

A view from the Rectory

Royal Birthday– June

It’s not fair that the queen gets two birthdays, though I guess Jesus also has two (we just don’t know his ‘real’ birthday, only his ‘official’ one). Many of you will remember that my previous parish was abroad in Dubai, and from abroad I was very proud of our Queen and the way that she has not been embarrassed to speak of her faith in her Christmas messages and elsewhere over the years. In the Muslim lands of the Middle East she is also greatly respected in part for that same reason. There is a wonderful illustrated book (The Servant Queen and the King she serves) celebrating her faith which I will be able to give as a present to any who come to church as a visitor over her birthday weekend. Last month I remarked on the swallows and arrival of Summer. As far as I’m concerned, summer arrived the day my house was cooler inside than it was outside – our stone church buildings are like this most of the time! Of course, I normally look at the warmth of the welcome in our churches but now, with the weather chiming in too, I can’t help but wonder at what a nice place the Quidenham group of parishes is these days! Over the summer I hope to be shown the area by having people guide me on Sunday walks round the parish boundaries. If you’d like to join me, look out for news in our pew sheet this next few months where I will give dates – pew notices are available on the front page of the church website each week (quidenhamgroup.co.uk). I pray for the Queen, and wish her all the very best for her birthday celebration, and look forward to meeting you at various events in the villages. I hope also that you can teach and guide me on local walks this summer.

20 Derelict House in Banham – Tim Bornett from Old Buckenham has been trying very hard to get clarification from Breckland Council as to the responsibilties and procedures required to address the problem of empty and neglected houses. Apparently it is the responsibility of a Housing Officer to instigate formal procedures through appeal type Tribunals – a seemingly long and torturous process. Parish Councils and individuals can only press for this action by continually reporting problems. The problems with the derelict house in Banham have been being flagged up for many years now by both the Parish Council and our local elected councillors – so far to no effect. It does not seem to be a very responsive procedure! A freedom of Information request from Tim led to the a response from Breckland Council that there have been no proposed enforcement orders over the last 15 years which have gone to a first tribunal regarding empty dwellings – not very promising.

Our local Councillor Adrian Joel has been making representations to the Breckland Council Housing Officers and would like to report their response: "27/29 Crown Street is a property that has been empty for several years. Periodically the owner has approached Breckland Council with proposals, none of which have been carried out. The property has deteriorated over time and fencing has been erected along the pavement boundary to prevent unauthorised entry, but the building is not structurally unstable and does not present a significant danger to highway users. Breckland Council wishes to see the property returned to use or the site made available for development. The Planning Department is currently considering taking action which will tidy the site and improve its appearance but will not achieve our overall objective of reuse. Whilst there are different legislative approaches to achieve this aim all are procedurally lengthy and subject to challenge at every step, however we remain committed to getting the matter positively resolved." Adrian will keep us informed of any further developments. Let us hope that things will start to be resolved for our ‘village eyesore’ and open the way for other empty and derelict properties in our six villages to be brought back into use – optimistically sometime within the next 15 years!
