How does this apply to us today? Killing someone's spirit with our words Killing someone’s reputation with Gossip Killing ourselves incrementally through bad

health choices and substance abuse Neglecting our spiritual lives leading to

eternal condemnation.

The sin of murder can be done through thought and senses.

A man harboring ideas of “murder” can not be judged on earth but God will definitely judge.

Murder of someone’s spirit (through emotional abuse), their reputation (through gossip), their person (through hate) and murder of ourselves.

Hating through envy, self interestRomans 1:29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,[a] wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,Phil 2:3-4: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. James 3:14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

Matthew 5:21-22 

Murder Begins in the Heart   21 “You have heard that it was said to those of

old, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to

you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’

shall be in danger of hell fire.

It’s natural to feel anger, the emotion itself is not sinful. This is referring to being contentious and taking our anger out on others, without a cause. Or letting your anger with someone (fester) to the point of explosion or bitterness (one kills others, the other—kills self)

Giving someone the feeling that they are good for nothing, by how we speak to them is a type of killing

through verbal abuse, for examplea father to a son/daughter, mother to a son/daughter, a boss to an employee, a husband to a wife/wife to a husband, even a sibling to another sibling. How are

we choosing our words, what are the messages we are giving? Are we accusatory, critical, inducing guilt etc.

Proverbs 12:1818 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword,       But the tongue of the wise promotes health.

Burning nerves Teasing/Making fun Insult Humiliation Enraging someone to

the point that they lose control and react.

Killing with deadly words

This lowers the person’s moral and is a type of killing.

Jeremiah 9:8  Their tongue is an arrow shot

out;       It speaks deceit;       One speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth,       But in his heart he lies in wait.

James 3:6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

Discrediting, or slandering someone’s character, or their decisions, or motives ruins their reputation and kills them socially.“He who hates talkativeness will sin less.  Never repeat a word and you will lose nothing at all; With friend or enemy, do not report it, and unless it is sin for you, do not reveal it.  For someone heard you and watched you and in time will hate you.  Have you heard a word? Let it die with you.  Take courage; it will not burst you.” Wisdom of Sirach 19: 4-10

Gossip—Let’s not kid ourselves!

Being negligent in what we eat—certain foods that our bodies don’t know how to process, such as fatty foods or complicated sweets etc.

Over-eating, eating too fast. In the U.S we are obese and

malnourished at the same time. Eating out of boredom or emotional

comfort.

Killing ourselves incrementally through bad health choices and substance abuse

Adultery: STDs, HIV Over-exhaustion and not getting enough

sleep—one can die suddenly due to this. Smoking addiction, leads to lung cancer

and heart disease. Alcohol abuse, over-drinking to the point

of lack of control and humiliation, vomiting etc. leading to alcoholism.

Habitual use of sleep medication or pain medication.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,[a] nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor

extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

Isaiah 58:7 Is it not to share your bread with the

hungry,       And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;       When you see the naked, that you cover him,       And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Refrain from Giving help: If there is someone in danger and we stand seeing that without giving help this is a form of killing.

Proverbs 21:13  Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor 

      Will also cry himself and not be heard. example of this is the rich man who had no mercy on

the Lazarus. The same applies to the priest and the Levite mentioned in the parable of the good Samaritan. As our Lord Jesus Christ mentioned I desire mercy and not sacrifice Matthew 9:13

Let us ask ourselves: Have I caused the injury or death of any one, or wished they were dead,

through evil intent, envy or harsh words? Have I done anything to shorten my own life or that of someone else

through an unhealthy lifestyle? Have I given way to anger, or harmed others with words or actions? Have I defamed others reputation through gossip, or failed to stand up

for those unjustly treated? Have I been cruel to anyone with my words or attitude or killed my own

spirit through harboring bitterness against someone? Have I failed to forgive anyone or harbored evil thoughts against them? Have I neglected my spiritual life leading to eternal death by neglecting

prayers, fasting, confessions, partaking of holy communion and scriptures?
