Our Solar System is made up of eight planets, and the sun.

They are divided into the inner planets and the outer planets.

During the course of this PowerPoint, we will be learning about the inner planets

The Inner Planets

Mercury

Venus

Earth

Mars

The inner planets all revolve around the sun

The Sun• Did you know the sun is a star?

• A star is a flowing sphere of gases that gives off energy

• All the planets in the solar system orbit around the sun

Mercury• It is the closest planet to the sun

• It is very hot on one side and cold on the other.

• There is no water

• Named after Mercury, the Messenger of the gods in Greek Mythology

Venus• Named after the greek goddess of love

• It is almost the same size as Earth

• Like Mercury, Venus has no water

• Venus’ atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide

• This carbon dioxide traps heat

• Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system

Earth

• Earth has one moon

• The only planet we know that supports life

• Earth’s atmosphere controls its temperature

• Water and oxygen make it possible for life to exist on our planet

Mars• Mars is smaller than Earth• Mars has 2 moons• The atmosphere is mainly carbon

dioxide• Craters and inactive volcanoes cover

most of the surface• Strong winds create dust storms• Named after the Mars, the god of war

in Roman mythology
