Believe It

The most important advance since the invention of the bass guitar has been the carbon fiber neck. From that day in 1976 when bass-playing rocketscientist Geoff Gould (yup, he was a carbon fiberdesigner on the Voyager probe) first wondered,“What if …” the electric bass has been a differentanimal. The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh played one ofthe first carbon fiber-necked basses and from thatpoint forward, the most accomplished and creativebassists in the world have played a Modulus.

Seminal players like Alphonso Johnson, DavidEllefson and Flea, to present masters like OteilBurbridge, Mike Gordon and Me‘Shell NdegéOcello.

Two Ways To Better Tone

To this day, Modulus Quantum basses are madeusing the same aerospace “hand layup” process as in the beginning. We’ve made many subtle designimprovements along the way, including the addition of a two-way relief adjustment. Each neck is still handlaminated with layers of carbon fiber “pre-preg” andcured in the Modulus autoclave. The distinctivelyspacey exterior layer of carbon fiber is known aroundthe shop as KLD™ or “a thousand (k) ladies dancing.”This artistic touch has been a Modulus trademark forover 15 years.

In 1996, Modulus president Rich Lasner designedthe Genesis neck system that takes advantage ofcarbon fiber’s extremely high strength and the sonicbenefits of lightweight tone woods. Rich’s carbon fiberskeleton supports the string tension and the tonewoods give the neck shape and controlled resonance. When you first pick up a Genesis instrument, you’vegot to look closely to see the carbon fiber. But playone note and you’ll hear it for sure.

While both systems deliver the benefits of carbonfiber construction, each has subtle differences in tone.

THE SOUND INYOUR HEAD ISIN THIS BASS

We don’t usually like sweeping statements, butQuantum instruments tend to be brighter, with anextended harmonic mix. Genesis instruments tend tobe warmer, with a greater fundamental pitch focus.

Is It Voodoo?

If there’s magic in carbon fiber, it’s in the veryhigh “modulus of elasticity” ofthe material. Inplainspeak, carbon fiber is extremelystiff for its weight – perfect for a bass neck. On the performance side, each note is full, withlow and high harmonics in generous quantity. Plus the high resonant frequency eliminates dead notes – even when playing the low strings in the highregister. On themaintenance side, carbon fiber isimpervious to moistureand unaffected bytemperature. YourModulus is perfectlystable from Montana to Miami.

But Modulusinstruments aren’t justtechno showpieces. Take alook at a Modulus. A closelook. The artistry andcraftsmanship areunparalleled. The precisionfretwork. The fit of thehardware. The smoothness of the finish. The attention to every detail is obvious and perfect.

From the beginning, it’salways been about improvingthe breed. About giving you a new plateau to step up to.About finding your voice. Ifthere’s a sound in yourhead screaming to get out, unlock it. Play a Modulus.

PUNCHYOUR WAYTO THE TOP

You can order your Genesis with awide choice of pickups and activeand passive tone circuits. We carefully test and match everyelectronics option to the instrument, soyou can feel confident that whichever

you choose, it will give you exceptionaltone and trouble-free performance.

The perfectly balanced body shapewas created for Modulus by bassguru Michael Tobias. Choose from alder or a combo ofexotic (yet ecologically sustainable)hardwoods. You won’t find a morecomfortable and sleeker body on theplanet. Michael also designed thebeautifully ergonomic neck shape for all Genesis bass models.

The saying, “Best of both worlds”is finally true. The extremely stiff carbon fiber spinesupports all the string tension. Theselect tone woods give the neck shapeand provide warmth and character to

the sound.

ModulusGenesis

When it’s a Genesis, you know it.Presence and punch you feel in the pit of your stomach – and lower.

The patented Genesis neck design turns the concept of a composite neck on its head. In the process it gives you the best characteristics of both wood and carbon fiber.

First, there’s a structural carbon fiber spine that extendsfrom the tip of the headstock to deep inside the body. The neckthen gets its shape from a solid piece of lightweight, resonanttone wood. All string tension is supported by the compositecentral structure, eliminating all warping and twisting.

Since the wood of the neck isn’t subject to any stress, we can use soft tone woods like red cedar and alder to addwarmth and character to the crisp attack characteristics of thecarbon fiber spine. It’s the right neck for players looking for anorganic, woody sound enhanced with the strong fundamentaland brilliance of carbon fiber.

THREE WAYS TO SIX-STRING

HEAVEN

Genesis IThe G1 represents all that is traditional, updated to 3rd millennium performance. Choose a traditional 3 pickup layout or two humbuckers. The sound of the G1 is warm and classic.

Genesis IIThe G2 is a child of the ’80srevolution in solid bodies. The back- routed alder body is brightened with a maple top. Again, you have a choice of a 3 pickup or twin humbucker layout. The G2 sound is bright, distinct and devastating.

Genesis IIIWith its set-in neck, the G3 delivers tone to the bone. With either thesoapbar or standard humbuckers, this instrument pours out thick toneswith surprising clarity. New is thesemi-hollow G3SH with a wider body and stylized sound hole.

ModulusGuitars

The technology of solid bodies hasbeen refined, but hasn’t changedsignificantly – until now.

Call the Genesis neck a minor revolution or amajor refinement – it’s a performance advantagethat you’ve got to play to appreciate. Blame iton the Genesis carbon fiber/tone woodneck, where the carbon fiber spine providesthe support and the tone wood provides theclassic sound.

Every note is clear, yet warm and round. You can hear the individual notes in every chorddistinctly. The tuning is stable and reliable.

Genesis guitars come in bolt-on and set-in neck variations, with top or back-routed bodiesand a variety of pickup configurations.

Here are the differences.
