THE SPECIFIC CARBOHYDRATE DIET AND
AUTISM:
THE FOUNDATION BLOCK OF HEALING
Lactose in fluid milk; sucrose in table sugar and maple syrup
Corn syrup, grain
THE VICIOUS CYCLE
From Breaking the Vicious Cycle
INTESTINAL FERMENTAION
Control-Healthy 3 ½ year oldMucosal surface at the duodeno-jejunal junction. All villi appear of uniform height. The mucosal surface is free of mucus.
(SEM; x 57)
Child With Chronic DiarrheaWasting away of villous ridges – decrease in height Considerable secretion of mucus.Generalized disaccharidase deficiency as well as colonization of mucosal surface by microorganisms.Beginning of mucus barrier between digestive enzymes and sugars needing digestion.
(SEM; x 154)
(SEM x 560)
Chronic Diarrhea Excessive mucus on the mucosa inhibits contactof carbohydrates with disaccharidases resulting in clinical intolerance of lactose and/or sucrose.
Bacteria- and host-derived mechanisms to control intestinal epithelial cell homeostasis: Implications for
chronic inflammation.
Technical University of Munich, Experimental Nutritional Medicine, Else Kroner-Fresenius-Center, Freising-Weihenstephan, Germany.
Clavel T, Haller D.
“Numerous clinical and experimental studies have shown that the intestinal microbes are
critical for the initiation and progression of chronic intestinal
inflammation.”
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, May 2, 2007
“The data discussed in the present review suggest that disturbances in the homeostasis between bacteria-
and host-derived signals at the epithelial cell level lead to a break in the intestinal barrier function
and to the development of mucosal immune disorders in genetically
susceptible hosts.”
Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2005
“Strategies to reduce clostridialpopulation levels harbored
by ASD patients or to improve their gut microflora profile
throughdietary modulation may help
to alleviate gut disorders common
in such patients.”
“These studies demonstrate significant alterations in theupper and lower intestinal flora of children with late-onset
autism and may provide insights into the natureof this disorder.”
“Treatment of digestive problems appears to have positiveeffects on autistic behavior. These new observations represent
only a piece of the unsolved autism ‘puzzle’ and shouldstimulate more research into the brain-gut connection.”
“…low intestinal carbohydrate digestive enzyme activitywas reported in 21 children (58.3%), although therewas no abnormality found in pancreatic function.”
Scientists make gut-brain connection to autism
Compounds produced in the digestive system have been
linked to autistic-type behaviour in laboratory settings,
potentially demonstrating that what autistic children eat can alter their brain function, say
scientists from the University of Western Ontario.
News article from the Canadian CBC, 9/27/07
Says Dr. MacFabe of the Canadian CDC…
"Certainly, a lot of these children had peculiar cravings for high-
carbohydrate foods that caused their behaviours," he said. “We were interested in finding a link
between certain compounds that are produced by bacteria in
the digestive system …."
LEGAL vs. ILLEGAL
ILLEGAL• Grains (including
wheat, rice, corn)• Starches
(including potatoes)
• Soy• Sugar (including
table sugar, maple syrup)
LEGAL• Fruit and
vegetables• Proteins (meat,
eggs, fish, etc.)• Nuts• Honey
Think Substitutions…
• Make SCD pizza (almond flour crust!)• Replace cakes and cookies with legal
versions• Make SCD legal chicken nuggets• Replace candy with dehydrated fruit,
apple chips, raisins, frozen grapes or bananas, frozen juice pops
• Frozen bananas and other fruit
THE QUESTION OF CASEIN
OPENS UP MANY MORE HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS FOR YOUR CHILD
CASEIN IS LEGAL ON SCDTHE GENERAL CONCENSUS IS THAT IT SHOULD NOT BE INTRODUCED INTO THE DIET FOR OUR KIDS UNTIL AT LEAST 3 MONTHS
IN CASES WHERE CHILDREN WERE SERIOUS CASEIN RESPONDERS, WAIT AT LEAST 6 MONTHS
HOMEMADE YOGURT IS THE BEST WAY TO REINTRODUCE HEATLHY FLORA BACK INTO THEINTESTINES
