During this week in betweenChristmas and New Year’s is a greattime to “ponder” your lie (Luke 2:19).Who are you really? What is your lieall about? Where did you come rom?And where might you be going?

Although most people don’t seemto make “New Year’s resolutions” any

more, we still think about changeswe want and/or need to make in ourlives. What are your goals in lie? What is your ultimatepurpose? Are you becoming a better person day by day,or something else? Are you living your lie to the ullest(John 10:10), and what does that even mean?

In thinking about your lie in 2016 and beyond, I haveone suggestion and challenge or you. What role doesprayer play in your lie? Really play? Do you believe inthe power o prayer, or do you honestly question it? Asone great theologian said, “Prayer is either the primaryact, or the worst delusion.”

I you wonder about prayer, i you have questions about

prayer, and/or i you want to enhance your prayer lie (ordevelop a prayer lie), I invite you to participate in a classI will be leading during Lent on the Understanding andPractice o Prayer. It will begin on Wednesday night,February 17th and run or at least five Wednesday nightsuntil the week beore Holy Week. I participants wouldlike, we will continue afer Easter and even start a weeklyprayer time together.

Te class will begin by sharing our earliest memoriesand experiences o prayer. We will share how we have

understood prayer and how to go about it. We will talabout different methods and approaches to prayer. Wwill get into some more contemporary understandingo prayer, as well as age-old practices. We will talabout praying the Scriptures, Labyrinth Prayer, 12-StePraying, the Serenity Prayer, Contemplative Prayer anCentering Prayer.

During the course o the class we will deal wit

some o the questions people ask about prayer: Can yochange God’s mind through prayer? Why pray i Goalready knows what you want beore you pray (Matthew6:8)? What does it mean to “pray without ceasing” Tessalonians 5:17)? Does God answer all prayers?

Every class session will end with a 5-10 minute timo learning how to relax, be still, breathe, meditate, anopen yoursel to the presence and will o God. We’ocus on letting God speak to you, rather than just youspeaking to God.

Troughout my ministry I have had countless peopsay to me, “I would really like to know the Bible,” but thenever come to Bible Studies. I’ve also had many peop

talk with me about their attempts at a prayer lie, efforand ailures Again, I wonder i they will take advantago this class. Will you?

I can’t think o a better New Year’s resolution ocommitment than to make 2016 a Year o Prayer. Whado you think? I guess I’ll find out when the class beginFebruary 17th.

Happy New Year!Roy

2016 – A Year of Prayer by Roy Stauffer

It’s hard to believe another yearhas already come and gone! 2015has been a year o so many ups anddowns, but afer watching the newson any given night it seems like anexceptionally dark and earul time.In the shadow o terrorism, anothercycle o political bickering, and anincreasingly polarized society, thereare a lot o tough hurdles aheado our nation. In our own church

community, so many have lost riends and loved ones during

the Advent season and many more suffer rom depression, addiction, and crippling amily situations. Indeed, these –or many – are difficult days. As Tomas Payne once wrote,"Tese are the times that try men's souls."

But it is also times like these in which the greatestmiracles take place (Dr. King: “only when it is darkenough can you see the stars” ). It was a time like ours inwhich an angel appeared to a young woman with goodnews o great joy. It was a time not altogether different –ull o uncertainty and political unrest – in which threewise men “took a different way home” afer they hadbeen in the presence o a child who would change theirlives – and the entire world. Trough all times and in

all places, that light continues to shine in the darknesthat hope continues to live on. Christian community about looking or the stars in the midst o darkness about ollowing the pillars o cloud by day and the pillaro fire by night.

For most o us though, when ear sets in it effectivelclouds everything else (just watch the evening newor V commercials to see how many use ear to scarus into watching!). In this chaotic landscape, it is atoo easy to all into the unrelenting temptation to livour lives in ear. Yet – at the dawn o yet another neyear – we are called as Christians to come together an

proclaim that God’s hope always  trumps our own eaAs we set new year’s resolutions, let us more importantlsummon our courageous “passion or the possible.” Awe reset our calendars, let us also rest our mindsets. Awe begin a new year, let us also declare a new beginning

Can we, as a ree society and a community rooted ithe love o Christ or all  people, venture through 201without orsaking our values and our unshakable spiro hope? Perhaps it is an impossibly tall order. Burecall the reaction o a young woman upon finding oushe would give birth to our savior: “For nothing will bimpossible with God.” Let us begin anew!

Being 30 weeks pregnanton the week o Christmashas been quite an interestingexperience. For me andStephen, the entire pathto parenthood has beencircuitous and challenging. It took us a long to time to getpregnant, and then it tookquite a while longer to staypregnant. Now that we're inthe third trimester, we havegotten plenty o advice—and warnings!—rom many

people in our lives. Apparently, being a parent is not orthe aint o heart, and it will change you orever. Okay,we got it, we think. We are bracing ourselves with theunderstanding that we don't even ully comprehendexactly what it is we are bracing or.

So many times this season I have ound mysel thinkingo Mary and Joseph. What a marvelous, mysterious

thing it must've been to be ront and center to a miracle!I've been mesmerized by Mary's Magnificat , her aith-filled song o openness, amazement and joy to beingchosen to give birth to Jesus! I imagine, though, thatthere were days when Mary elt a little less than joyul.Maybe these were the days where her eet were swollenand her back hurt. Maybe she worried that she hadn't eltthat baby move much that afernoon. Maybe there weremoments she elt bothered that her body was a little tooround to quickly accomplish tasks that had previouslybeen routine, and she elt annoyed to have to slow down.I can imagine that there were days where Mary elt alittle needy, kind o like I do.

I don't like the days where I eel needy. It's no un tobe vulnerable—to have to ask or help and support; toadmit to not being able to do it all or have it all together.

God must understand that rustration. Afer all, Godchose to show up on earth with us as a tiny, helpless

newborn baby, making us eel like we have somethingto offer, giving us a chance to love him. Emmanuel, Godwith us. God who receives the first round o humanadoration rom a very young unwed mother, an along-or-the-ride ather who secured a stable as a reasonableplace to stay the night, and a rag tag bunch o shepherdsand curious kings.

God must know how hard it is to receive help romsomeone who has all the answers, who has the wholething figured out. Te world does not value vulnerability, yet, the most valuable gif we Christians ever receive isoffered to us at Christmas, wrapped in swaddling clothesand total tenderness, lying in a manger, vulnerable.

Until now, the version o Jesus that has resonated mostwith me is the teaching, healing Jesus. Tat grown upJesus was antastic! He knew just what to say and howto say it. He accomplished great things, and made adifference in the lives o all who he encountered. BabyJesus had a ar different approach in how he connectedwith people: coos, cries and cuddles coincide with hishumble entrance to the world. Maybe he let himsel need

us so that we could let down our guard and trust in beingable to need him.One o the biggest gifs I have received this year is

a new understanding o what it means to need (andreceive) help. I would certainly rather offer help tosomeone else than admit to needing it mysel—but BabyJesus is teaching me how powerul it is to let myselreceive help and care. Each time I have let down myguard and admitted a need this year, there has been ariend, church member or amily member at the ready. What a gif to have such a caring community o supportand encouragement, and what a gif it is to get to knowJesus better! It is my hope that this Christmas, we are all

drawn a little nearer to Christ. - Andra
