From the Rabbi’s Desk

Rabbi Cutler

A few weeks ago we celebrated Simhat Torah (it was a very nice event with music and dancing with the Torah scrolls). We ended the reading of Torah which spoke about Moses’ death and started reading the Torah which spoke about God creating the world. We did this within the same service. The purpose of reading the very last Torah portion and immediately reading the very first Torah portion is symbol-ic of the continuity of the Jewish people that the Torah is eternal and it is the responsibility of each generation to keep Judaism alive. But unfortunately with each succeeding generation it is becoming more and more difficult (Pew Study of 2013) to keep liberal Judaism continuing. The future for non-Orthodox Judaism is not faring too well. (I would like to offer an adult education program looking at the future trends in American Judaism based on the Pew Study of 2013.) The trend in America is that all liberal religions are not doing too well in attracting younger people. But it is even more difficult in the Jewish community for several reasons – our numbers are much smaller so we would feel the impact immediately, there are too many barriers (Hebrew language, complexity of ritual ob-servance, etc) and most importantly the loss of purpose. The Torah is very clear cut on purpose – be loyal (ahava) to God and God will give you a promised land and pro-tect you. The Israelites needed only to be obedient to the mitzvoth that God gave to Moses. It was a simple quid pro quo. It served our ancestors well for over 3,000 years. When Joshua took over for Moses, the judges took over for Joshua, the prophets for the judges, the Sanhedrin for the prophets and the rabbis for the Sanhedrin. But as postmodern Jews in light of the Holocaust and the establishment of State of Israel and advancement of technolo-gies the quid pro quo theology does not work any longer. Therefore we are the generation that has to figure this out for the next generations. We have to make a strong case on what the purpose is to be Jewish. We belong to Beth Israel because we are all committed to Judaism in our own particular way for various reasons. But do we share as a community a common purpose? Do we share a universal purpose on being Jewish? If you ask Chabad (Lubavitch) their purpose is to bring the messiah and that happens if every Jew did a mitzvah (ritual act such as putting on tefillin). They go out into the general Jewish community to recruit Jews to do ritual acts. I ask you, members of Beth Israel, “what is the purpose to being a Jew?” And the second question is “what is the purpose of Beth Israel?” I am challenging you to answer the two questions and to discuss among yourselves the answer. Once we can have this conversation we can then focus on what our mission is. It is the mission (I realize there is a mission statement for the synagogue but a statement is not a mission) that will drive every decision, poli-cy, program, and plan of our community. The mission transcends any one individual or group. The mission is the purpose of why we exist. Everything flows from that. I have my own thoughts and ideas on what the purpose is but before I do that I think it is important to have soul searching conversations and dialogue. This will also help to bring people together and to listen to each other. As we are now in the month of Heshvan (month without holidays) there is time for deep discussions and dialogue.

We started the New Year, we started from the beginning of the Torah and now let us start our conversation.

We have heard over the years that the conservative movement is struggling, that two thirds of Jews are unaffiliated with synagogues and that the new generation does not identify with religion. There have been many studies on these subjects and I will not dispute the facts. What I will dispute is that the future of Judaism is dim. For decades, studies have said that Judaism will die out and yet we still survive. Here at Beth Israel, our cherished community, the future is bright. We are meeting these challenges by evolving and listening very closely to our Jewish community and their needs. These changes will take some time, a lot of thought and a commitment from all of us. Slow, steady, and staying the course will make us continue to grow and flourish. As you have read, over the past few months we have had 10 new members join our community. I see the future of Beth Israel being the center of Judaism in Chester County, with prayer, study, ritual, and heritage for all of us, as well as the unaffiliated as we open up our doors even wider to the greater Jewish community surrounding us. One of the ways we can carry out this vision is with the Cohen Religious School Enrichment Fund. We are very fortunate to have a donor who matches our donations to the Cohen Religious School Enrich-ment Fund, up to $5,000. This fund is used to support all programs that enrich Judaism in our children and our families here at Beth Israel as well as the surrounding community. This fund has supported such great events as Sukkot Under The Stars, Hanukkah Hooplah, and the Andi Jo-seph Musical program to name a few. It helps support our FREE program B.I. High that has been a huge success thus far for our Jewish teens in the community. Please help us reach our goal by December 20th so we may receive the matching funds of $5,000. Please contact Debbie in the office or go to www.bethisraelpa.org and click on donations to make a pledge. A few updates… Over the past month, you may have heard that we have had some severe issues with our well system. Af-ter looking at all options of possible fixes and the costs of those repairs, the board decided that we would tap into the public water system. All the paperwork and permits have already been completed and the repairs should be completed by November 1st. Thank you to Cindy Blair-Miller and Debbie Barbato for spearheading this project. During the end of December, the front doors from the synagogue are going to be refinished and brought back to their original beauty. For two to three weeks, the entryway will be closed and we will be using the rear entry of the building. On behalf of the congregation, I wish to thank the gracious donor who wishes to remain anonymous. We wish to welcome Paul Zislis to the Board of Directors. Over the past year Paul has given a lot of his time to Beth Israel and was a key component in orchestrating the Rabbinic search and is a very welcome addition.

Religious School Chai-lights Joan Sharp

November brings the Religious School’s first “Saturday School” of this school year on November 7th (note

date change from originally scheduled date of Nov. 21st). Saturday School offers the opportunity for our stu-

dents to fully experience Shabbat morning services, familiarize them with the Torah service, and join together

to learn from the d’var Torah, put on a skit, and follow the conclusion of services with a congregational lunch-

eon. Services and activities are geared for different grade levels; we will have a Young Children’s Shabbat ser-

vice geared towards children up to second grade, which will include a craft related to the Torah portion. Chil-

dren in 3rd grade – Confirmation will participate in their own Shacharit (morning) service from 9:30 – 10:00,

while adults participate in the Shacharit service led by Rabbi Jon. Parents of younger children may choose to

join the adult service while their younger children are in the Young Children’s Shabbat service if they like.

Third grade through Confirmation will then join together for the Torah service with the adults.

We hope that every Religious School family can join us on this special morning to celebrate Shabbat together.

We ask that you RSVP to the office to let us know how many people from your family will be attending and

staying for the luncheon following, so we can adequately plan.

*To clarify scheduling changes, please note that we will have Saturday School on November 7th. We will still

have Religious School on Sunday, November 8th, as there are several other events taking place that morning

(Culter Chat & Chew for 3rd-5th grade families, Pre-K Parent Workshop, K-2nd grade students trip to the art

studio, and Zumba).

We will cancel classes on Sunday, November 22nd to make up for the extra day of school the weekend of Sat-

urday School.

UPCOMING RELIGIOUS SCHOOL EVENTS:

Sunday, November 1 – Confirmation students’ trip to art studio

Don’t forget to turn BACK clocks 1 hour the night before

Saturday, November 7 – Saturday School – 9:30 am – 11:30 am/ Luncheon following

This year we will be adding another component to our Shabbat celebration. The first Monday of each month will have a different mitzvah opportunity. This month we will be honoring our troops (KAVOD), by making cards and sending care packages. We are partnering with Pickering Valley Mom’s Club- with their LOVE FROM CHESTER COUNTY fourth annual troop drive. Rabbi Jon and Mitch Drucker will do a brief presentation to the children about the military and what their donations will mean to those individuals. From now until November 15th they will be collecting goods as well as cash donations to cover the cost of shipping. It is about 1.75 per pound to send the goods overseas. The second half of the month we will be collecting donations for Children’s Hospital in Phil-adelphia as well as St. Baldrick’s Foundation in honor of Olivia Steinberg ( a former student) who is battling leuke-mia. Teaching children that tzedakah is a component of Shabbat at a young age helps children to easily incorporate this into their routine as well as instill the need to help others. On November 14th we will hold our 2nd Glow in the Dark Dance Party. Two dollars of each admission will be donated to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or St. Baldrick’s Foundation. We will use PTO funds to also match donations up to $100 in honor of Olivia Steinberg. Childhood cancer research is grossly underfunded. In spite of the fact that each year 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., in the last 20 years, only two drugs have been FDA approved. Half of all chemotherapies used for children’s cancers are over 25 years old. Pharmaceutical companies don’t commit resources to childhood cancer research because the adult cancer business is much more profitable. Only 4% of U.S. federal funding is dedicated to childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick’s foundation is the largest private (non-government) funder of childhood cancer research grants. We will split those funds between the two organizations.

Torah Fund What is it?

The Torah Fund campaign began in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it merged with the Mathilde Schechter

Residence Hall campaign that provided housing for undergraduate students. In time, the campaign identified needs

and raised funds for specific projects, including:

Women’s League Educational Pavilion (Kripke Tower)

Women’s League Seminary Synagogue

Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall Renovations

Goldsmith Hall

Residence Hall at the American Jewish University

JTS Quadrangle

JTS Library Bookshelves

Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies Garden

For the past several years, funds raised by Torah Fund have gone toward scholarships to all the schools. There are

continuing opportunities for sisterhoods and individuals to provide support to all four institutions through Torah

Fund. Thousands of dedicated volunteers have contributed to the spiritual, esthetic and material well being of these

educational communities by supporting Torah Fund projects.

Every woman has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women's League in support of The Jewish Theo-logical Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Insti-tute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). The Torah Fund campaign was first launched in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it combined with the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall campaign that provided housing for undergraduate students. Since then, To-rah Fund has been a vital source of support for JTS and its students, raising more than 66 million dollars. Thou-sands of dedicated volunteers have contributed to the spiritual, esthetic and material well being of the JTS com-munity by supporting Torah Fund projects.

BETH ISRAEL CHOIR

Our Choir has evolved into a meaningful and spiritual part of Beth Israel. Thanks to Rabbi Jon, the choir plans to sing at least once a month during Shabbat Services. However, we are in need of a few musicians in addition to our wonderful pianist and harpist: . BassGuitar . Drums . Clarinet . Violin . Saxophone . Trumpet . Trombone The musicians would not have to attend every practice session. There is a fantastic program being planned for the January Shabbat service. Stay tuned!! We encourage you to contact Barbara Hendel, 610-321-2559 or [email protected] if you are (hopefully) interested in becoming part of our choir family. Thank you for your support.

Nat’ah karem is a phrase from the beloved prayerEishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer

today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman, who “plants a vineyard by her own la-

bors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016

Torah Fund pin/pendant.

Women’s League’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and

enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

Every woman has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through

active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League in support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY),

Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). Another way to

donate to Torah Fund is:

Torah Fund & EBay: A New Way to Support an Important Cause

Torah Fund has partnered with eBay to raise funds to benefit Torah Fund’s campaigns and support scholarship pro-jects at the four rabbinical schools. It is easy to do. 1) Select the item you want to sell. If you have a digital camera, take a picture of the item. It helps to sell it. 2) Register as a seller at eBay (www.ebay.com), designating Torah Fund as your charity choice, when asked. You'll need to pick a user name and password (just like when you created your email address). 3) You'll be asked to select a donation percentage (10% - 100%) that will be given to Torah Fund from the proceeds of the sale. 4) Create a brief description and post this information to your listing as directed on the eBay site. 5) When you're notified by eBay that someone has bought your item, wait for payment to arrive before sending the item to the buyer. Then wrap the item and ship it off. The buyer has paid the shipping costs. (There's help on the eBay site to determine the shipping costs.) 6) If you don't want to wrap it yourself, take it to a service store (e.g. UPS). 7) Send the donation percentage to MissionFish, the company that processes these funds for eBay. Torah Fund re-ceives your donation from MissionFish. 8) You keep the remaining proceeds of the sale. That’s it— your mitzvah is completed. Mission Fish, eBay’s agent, will provide you with a tax receipt for your taxes when you ask for it. Easy stuff!

Plus there are the Torah Fund Cards

Jamie & Andy Parker are the proud parents of Presley age 6 (soon to be 7) and Evan age 4.

This family of four loves all things Disney as can be attested to by the photo above. They enjoy in-

door and outdoor activities together and as individuals. Andy is a golfer and a huge Eagles fan. Ja-

mie is into Yoga and Zumba (sign up for a class).Presley and Evan love their school.

Jamie is the Marketing Manager for Summers Labs, a Pharmaceutical Co specializing in medical

products for the treatment of skin disorders. She also teaches Zumba classes at Beth Israel. Jamie

is extremely committed to making a positive difference in people's lives. We need more Jamie's in

this world.

Andy is a Traffic Engineer with McCormick Taylor, a consulting firm specializing in Highway Design

and Traffic Analysis. He was quite patient with my questions regarding the completion of work on

202.

It was my pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with them both. They are lovely people and an

asset to Beth Israel.
