FROM THE PASTOR

Christmas lingers through the Sunday of the Epiphany – the celebration of the visit of the Magi – but it doesn’t last long. It’s not just that the drug stores and grocers have already switched to red hearts and Valentine’s Day candy; the days of Christmas are only twelve, compared to fifty for Easter. Easter is the thing that matters, the strange dying and rising that breaks down the gates of hell like the fall of Mordor in The Return of the King. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday dawning into Easter morning, these are the days that break the reign of sin and death. And the Easter celebration lasts until it culminates in the outpouring of the Spirit on Pentecost. Fifty days for Easter, a mere twelve for Christmas.

Maybe Christmas deserves more. The message of the incarnation is truly wondrous and profound. But there are stories demanding to be told: Jesus baptized in the Jordan, the heavens opened, and the Spirit descending on him; the summoning of disciples to leave their fishnets and cast wide the net of God’s mercy; the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount describing the nature of God’s reign and the shape of our life as citizens of that realm. We cannot linger at the manger; the world is waiting for its healing.

So we sing the carols and read the story and then we move on. Shepherds and Magi give way to fishermen, disciples, and the crowds. But the song of the angels continues. The light still shines. The Christ is made manifest. The nations come to see. And in every word of Jesus, every healing, every

welcome, is a taste of the new creation come to revive the old. In every word, every healing, every welcome, is a foretaste of Easter morning. And in every word, every healing, every welcome, is a share in Advent’s promise and a blossoming of the nativity: God is come. The divine walks among us. Heaven reaches out to touch us with its healing. The way of life – imperishable life – is revealed.

It is not the turning of the year that makes things new; it is the Christ among us, the Christ in us.

The story presses to be told.

+ + +

I want to thank again all those who worked to make our Advent and Christmas celebration wonderful. There are too many to name them all. The staff work very hard to make the season bright. Volunteers make the sanctuary beautiful and

connect its appearance to the message of the season. There are people who haul the banners and decorations out from the many nooks and crannies where they are stored. There are people folding bulletins and sending the mailings. There are volunteers assisting with the children’s play, wrapping presents for Christmas Eve, bringing donations for the shelter. There are donors helping to pay for the flowers and musicians. There are people giving their time to count the offerings and pay the bills that keep the lights on and staff happy. There are leaders and readers in worship, ushers at the door, coffee hour hosts working in the kitchen, children sharing the Christmas message in the children’s play and by their presence in worship. Many lives get touched by our worship through these seasons. It is a ministry of the whole community. And I am thankful for you all.

Pastor Bonde

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

(John 1:1-5)

MUSIC IN LOS ALTOS

Festive trumpets and harpsichord

Albany Consort harpsichordist and popular Freeway Philharmonic collaborator Jonathan Salzedo returns to Music In Los Altos on Sunday, January 26th at 3:00 p.m. with two of the country’s leading baroque trumpet players. Adam Gordon has been principal trumpet of Sacramento Symphony, Monterey Symphony and Opera San Jose, and currently plays with the Fort Worth Symphony; other engagements have included San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet, Jerusalem Symphony and National Orchestra of Mexico. Bill Harvey is currently principal trumpet of Oakland Symphony and Opera San Jose; he has also performed with the California Symphony and the Cape Town Symphony.

In their program of music for two virtuoso trumpets and harpsichord, Adam and Bill use the natural valveless trumpets that were in use during the 17th

and 18th centuries. Both players are equally adept on the instrument and can be heard playing it with Philharmonia Baroque, Portland Baroque and American Bach Soloists. As all the instruments of that period, these pre-technology versions morphed into their modern counterparts through 19th century innovation. But to represent the older music as it sounded originally, with its true colors and more intimate sound, nothing is better than hearing the originals, even more so when two masters of the instrument engage in onstage trumpet dueling that will leave you open-mouthed.

RECENT EVENTS

A CHANGE IN THE SEASON

Advent was a contemplative and reflective time as we looked forward to the coming of baby Jesus. Household devotional packets were given as a way to help guide individuals and families on their Advent Journey. Each week carried a different aspect of the overall theme,

“Come, let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord”

Week 1 THAT GOD MAY TEACH US GOD’S WAYS

Week 2 THE EARTH WILL BE FULL

OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD

Week 3 EVERLASTING JOY SHALL BE ON THEIR HEADS

Week 4 THEY SHALL BEAT THEIR SWORDS

INTO PLOWSHARES

On each of the Sundays in Advent, we gathered together to share in activities that prepared ourselves (and our church!) for the season. To spread joy, peace, and kindness this Christmas season, each household made a “Christmas Jar” on Sunday, December 1st. From the beginning of Advent through Epiphany, individuals and families were encouraged to donate a percentage of the money they spend on presents and/or to collect pocket change to put into the jar. On Epiphany, Sunday January 5th, the money from the jars was collected, blessed, and donated to The Support Network. Advent wreath supplies were also available for everyone, with gratitude expressed to LaVinnia Pierson for coordinating the activity.

On the second Sunday of Advent we gathered after worship for Hanging of the Greens, where various members assisted us in decorating the sanctuary and property for the holidays. We especially thank Bill Pataky and Yolanda Faile for the refreshments, along with all of the other many helping hands!

Joyous celebrations took place on December 15th, the third Sunday of Advent. The Youth Christmas Program was held during worship. The play was a fun take on a familiar book, and was called, “How The Grinch Found The Christ in Christmas” by Valerie Lynch. We thank Mini Meyer, Paul Meyer, Madeline Fries, Tabitha Fries, Lorenzo Bermudez, and Ryan Wright for participating, and Kate Mathewson for directing. We also thank the Rejoicing Ringers for their participation during the program as well. Following worship we gathered with friends and family in the fellowship hall at a Scandinavian Smörgasbörd for this year’s Chirsmtas Party Luncheon. The smörgasbörd featured twenty-two menu items! We sincerely thank Dianne Wiklander for planning, coordinating, cooking, setting up and cleaning up the event. We also thank all of her kitchen helpers. The meal was amazing!

Upon arrival, guests were greeted with festive music by Bob Stanfield on the accordion and several additional musicians. After lunch we enjoyed the Nordic Dance Group, including Rich and LaVinnia Pierson! Fun facts were interspersed through their dancing, keeping the audience engaged. The event finshed with rice pudding and raspberry sauce, and a variety of spritz cookies. Our hearts were full of joy after such a festive occasion.

On the fourth and final Sunday of Advent, December 22nd, we gathered for a carol-sing focused on peace. Cards were also distributed for those who wanted to write a letter of peace or reconcillation to a friend or loved one.

There is much gratitude to be expressed for Advent. Among the many, we thank all those who made the season special through their service in decorating the sanctuary and property. We thank those who brought toys and clothing for the Support Network. We filled an entire van full of gifts! We thank those who brought ornaments for the entryway Christmas Tree. We thank the youth who participated with the Advent calendar each week in worship during the Children’s Sermon.

As Advent concluded we arrived at Christmas Eve, where 165 people gathered in our sanctuary for worship and festivities. With so many of us gathered, the candlight portion of the service was very impactful.

On Christmas Day the entryway was filled with cheer as we gathered around hot cider and goodies. Thank you to all who brought treats and helped with set-up and clean-up. Caroling carried us through worship that day, and on through The Sunday In Christmas on December 29th. The stars of Epiphany shown brightly through our entryway windows until Sunday, January 5th, where we celebrated the arrival of the Magi. Thank you to Kaitlyn Smiley, Mathias Bird von Ebyn and Sam Fries for playing the Magi roles in worship. With the conclusion of Epiphany we look ahead to the new year, a time to remember Christ’s example of happiness, harmony, and acceptance. May this year of 2020 bring joy and comfort to all who read this. Come share in our weekly celebrations as you strengthen your faith in Christ this year.

OUTREACH & CARE

The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness did

not overcome it. (John 1:5)

Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy New Year! A new year, and a new decade!

What will 2020 bring? My mother-in-law said each

year, “Next year will be different. Maybe not better,

but different.” She was a woman of practical

optimism with 97 years of wisdom to her credit. A

new year brings new hopes, dreams and new

opportunities for God’s light to shine in the darkness.

As the season changes from Christmas to Epiphany,

we experience the lengthening of the days, and more

daylight, and the growing awareness of the emphasis

on light in our Sunday readings. On the shortest days

in December we look for ways to bring additional

light into our homes with candles and Christmas

lights. On Christmas morning we hear the words

read, “The Light shines in the darkness and the

darkness does not overcome it.” Jesus is the light to

scatter the darkness of sin, brokenness, and pain in

our world. Jesus came to offer the light of love, hope,

peace and joy.

When you are in a dark place you know the

importance of even a tiny flashlight or small candle

to bring a tiny light. When we come together on

Christmas Eve, our tiny individual candles join

together with all the other candles to make a bright

light, bright enough to sing “Silent Night, Holy

Night.” The light, along with our voices joined

together offer the brightness of light and hope to a

darkened world. This year, our Christmas hospitality

bag included a small flashlight. It will help you be

prepared for any dark emergency and remind you of

Jesus who brings the light of love and hope to us

wherever we go.

Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “You are the

light of the world. Let your light so shine before

others that they may see your good works and glorify

your Father in heaven.”

In this New Year, may you experience light, love,

hope, joy and peace in every moment. May you be a

light for others spreading that light of love, hope, joy

and peace just as we shared the light on Christmas

Eve. Next year will be different. Let’s do our part

to make a difference in the world offering a light in

the darkness to reflect the light of Jesus in all we do

and say.

In the words of the song, “This little light of mine,

I’m gonna let it shine.”

So keep shining, be a light, share the light.

In the light of the love of Jesus,

LaVinnia Pierson

MUSIC DIRECTOR

A VIEW FROM FROM THE ORGAN BENCH

Did you ever think…”That music sure is calming.” “That music gives me so much energy!” “This favorite hymn comforts me to the depths of my soul!” “I’m truly inspired when I hear/sing/play this music.” Yes, it's true, music can intensify all these feelings and more: love, hope, longing, great joy! Most likely, our love of Advent and Christmas music is for all the reasons above, and we’ve given a blessed offering of music at LALC which has deepened and enhanced the richness of these Seasons. From Pastor Bonde’s excellent choice of hymns to the Albany Consort at Christmas Eve, from our Rejoicing Ringers presentations of Advent and Christmas themes, to our Chancel Choir's anthems each week, to, from Lucy Carter’s Carol Sing during coffee hour, to Rich and LaVinnia Pierson’s Norwegian Music and Dancers at our Christmas Party, from Elaine Hanson and Maureen McLaughlin’s handbell duet (which they began practicing mid November!), to our weekly Cantors for the Advent Candle Lighting…all these things and many more.

Thank you all very much for making the Season one of joy and beauty.

Beyond this season…looking forward:

January 5th, Sunday morning worship: Handbell duet with Elaine and Maureen

January 12th, Sunday morning worship: Solo by Lucy Carter and flautist, Alice Davis

January 26th, 3:00 p.m. we will again host our resident performers, The Albany Consort featuring two Baroque trumpeters. Many don’t realize how amazing these musicians are....Jonathan Salzedo, gives a little talk before each piece, to set the time, the place and circumstance, very entertaining and enlightening. Children are invited and can sit where they easily see the players. We encourage everyone

to participate as audiences might have in the Baroque times, it’s a relaxed atmosphere.

As we join with Christians around the world in celebrating the wonder and mystery of Christmas, moving in the Epiphany Season, we continue to treasure wonderful, long-standing traditions. I treasure the chance and opportunity to share this experience in my role here at LALC, in kinship with all of you dear people, who celebrate this most holy time in our church calendar. I hope you do as well.

Happy 2020!!! Lynda Alexander

WORSHIP

FROM CHRISTMAS TO EPIPHANY

The Season of Christmas consists of the twelve days from Christmas through the feast of the Epiphany on January 5th. It is a time of joy and wonder that celebrates the mystery of the incarnation, that “the Word has become flesh,” that the author and giver of life has taken up our human existence, that heaven’s promises are fulfilled, the silence ended, the face of God made visible.

The Sunday in Christmas completed the story told by Luke and read on Christmas Eve. The child of the manger is brought to the temple and welcomed by God’s faithful people Simeon and Anna, who yearn for the earth’s redemption.

The Feast of the Epiphany took us to the story told in Matthew’s Gospel, of the visit by the Magi, who seek earth’s true king and kneel before the child of Bethlehem. But the shadow of the cross lies over that story as the kings of this world seek to destroy the child, and the holy family must flee to Egypt for refuge.

Together, these Days proclaim the work of God to transform the world, bringing God’s reign of light and life. In the Sundays following Epiphany we read of the work of Jesus to heal and forgive and gather a community of followers who live God’s mercy for the world. The story then turns towards Good Friday with the world’s rejection of Jesus’ word and way, and God’s vindication of Jesus through the empty tomb of Easter.

WORSHIP SERVICE VOLUNTEERS

As we enter into a new year, we want to take a moment and thank our dedicated worship service

volunteers. Sunday mornings could not happen without you! From our ushers

The volunteer schedule for January to June of 2020 has been published. Paper copies are in your entryway mailbox, and an electronic copy was sent. Let Natalie know if you need another copy. If you have been scheduled for a date you are unable to serve, switch with someone and let Natalie know.

We always welcome new volunteers and especially need additional Assisting Ministers, ushers, and coffee hosts. See Natalie in the church office, Pastor Bonde, or LaVinnia Pierson if you are interested in finding out more. We invite you to serve as often as you feel comfortable and works with your schedule.

Our coffee hosts in 2019 started working towards a greener fellowship hour by using dishware. We thank you for your efforts! For those who are unable to manage the dishware, paper products are still available. We appreciate all levels of help and want our volunteers to feel the appreciation as well.

MISSIONS

ENCOMPASS MINISTRIES: Personal Care Café

As a congregation, we are offering support to the Encompass Ministries, our partnering organization that assists in care for those that are homeless. A Personal Care Café is hosted twice a month in San Jose where hygiene products are given out. Requested donations include new and unused, individual or family-sized: shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products, socks, underwear, razors, soap, scarves, knitted caps and tooth care. Pastor Jim Clark-Moore thanks us for our regular contributions to the Personal Care Café.

THE SUPPORT NETWORK

The Support Network provides a shelter in a safe and secure environment where women and their children who are fleeing from domestic violence may take refuge. Our congregation shows ongoing support by donating gift cards which the organization uses to fund their many programs. Gift cards to Target, Safeway, Walgreens, CVS, or Walmart, as well as gas and phone cards, are all welcome. Donations can be left with the office.
