Aſter siſting through the data from Steps One through Three, the team met on May 14 for prayer, conversaon and discernment. At the end of four hours, each person was asked to write down the three top themes or ideas that seemed to come out of the first three steps -- Step One: listening to the Bible about Chrisan mission”; Step Two: Listening to St. Js past and present mission and hopes for the future”; Step Three: Listening to the world”. The SPIRIT of St. James’

All are welcome at the Lord’s table

(Holy Communion) as we celebrate the grace of God.

On Sunday, June 19, at all services, Tom Schneider, chair of the Mission Team, reported on what the team has learned thus far in the 5 Step Discern-ment process that St. James’ has engaged over the past 10 months. In May 2016, the team (consisting of Tom Schneider, Paul Ebert, Ellen Kulik, Kip Coerper, Carolyn Legg, Nancy Graham, Tina Stavenhagen-Helgren, John Helgren, Pam Stewart and Becky Coerper) devoted significant time to reviewing the feedback from Steps One through Three, and discussing how we will know the answer to the question we have been posing these 10 months: How is God leading St. James’ to serve the needs of the world in our third century? After sifting through the data from Steps One through Three, the team met on May 14 for prayer, conversation and discernment. At the end of four hours, each person was asked to write down the three top themes or ideas that seemed to come out of the first three steps -- Step One: “listening to the Bible about Christian mission”; Step Two: “Listening to St. J’s past and present mission and hopes for the future”; Step Three: “Listening to the world”. Members of the congregation took an active roll in all three steps. To our amazement, when team members shared with one another what we had written, we had all heard the same things:

1. help provide local affordable housing, 2. use our space to serve youth, and 3. offer our space for mental health programs.

Over the summer the team will continue to explore how we might accomplish these three goals by:

Since 1816, St. James’ has been a place for amazing worship, ministry, fellowship and service to others. As we honor the past, celebrate the present and prepare for the fu-ture, please join us at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at the Skaneateles Country Club for festive 200th Birthday Party. The evening’s meal will include serving stations for soup, salad, pasta, carved meat, coffee along with birthday cake for dessert. A cash bar will be available. Thanks to a generous gift from the Women of St. James’, the cost for the evening is only $10 per person. Reservations are required. Bring or mail your check to the Parish Office to save your spot. Jumble Sale 2016 Saturday, July 23, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. ~ Village Hall, 26 Fennell St. (next to Topps)

The time has arrived for our annual fundraiser, The Jumble Sale! This large rummage sale is being at the Village Hall again this year. All donations should be dropped off directly behind the Village Hall at the overhead doors during the week of July 17. Please do not drive on the front lawn area. We will have people there to help unload. The dates and times are below. We need all the donations we can get. Furniture, collectables, clean linens, silverware, appliances (no TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners), picture frames, toys and more. Remember please no books or clothing. This year we are also trying something new -- a raffle! If you do not have any slightly used donations, we are also accepting new items for our raffle basket. Items could include gift cards, jewelry, gift certificates for local businesses or restaurants, bottles of wine and more great items. We want this basket to be chocked full of great items! Any donations for the raffle basket can be delivered to the Parish Office, to the attention of Laura Posecznick. As with any event, we can’t make it happen without volunteers. Suitcases wanted

We are in need of lightly used or new suitcases to donate to a foster home in Syracuse. These suitcases allow children and who have to enter the foster care system the dignity to have their belongings in a suitcase. We will be accepting the suitcases at the Village Hall the week prior to the Jumble Sale July 18-July 22. These will not be sold. All will be donated directly. Special Skaneateles Festival event for our 200th celebration

The Skaneateles Festival is presenting a special pre-season event at St. James' on Sunday, August 7, at 2 p.m. as a part of the monthly 200th anniversary celebrations. Lindsay Groves, principal cellist of Symphoria will bring her quartet with SU pianist Steven Heyman, to perform Schubert String Trio in Bb, Mozart Piano Quartet in Eb, and Dvorak Piano Quintet. Admission is $15 at the door. Please come and enjoy this world class music at St. James', one of the original venues for the Skaneateles Festival, and enjoy the music of Lindsay Groves, who was one of the original inspirations behind Skaneateles’ premier music event in 1980.

Safeguarding God’s People (Safe Church) – New Online Training

The Diocese of Central New York will be implementing online training for Safeguarding God’s People (commonly referred to as Safe Church). Although the online modules will be the primary method for training, the DVDs will continue to be an acceptable format. A working group has been convened to update the current Diocesan policies and administrative procedures. The Bishop has approved the plan for the Finger Lakes Syracuse West District (St. James’ district) to serve as a working model for the rollout of the online program. Feed-back from each Parish will be an integral part of the process as we move forward. What we learn through this process will help us to better anticipate the challenges Parishes face in maintaining compliance and to develop processes that will support each Parish. Following is an excerpt from the Church Pension Group Safeguarding online website: “The Church Pension Group and its affiliate companies are proud to offer online training to supplement and broaden the awareness and prevention education provided by Safeguarding God's Children. Safeguarding Online has been developed in response to the requests from Episcopal Church clergy and lay leaders for more flexible, easy-to-access, and cost effective training. Safeguarding Online provides training in short, focused courses that can normally be completed in 30-45 minutes. These courses can be taken from any location where a high speed Internet connection is available.” In addition to the core courses that parallel the two videos previously used in Safe Church training, there is an expanded selection of courses including bullying, social media safety, harassment and elder abuse. Laura Posecznick, St. James’ Director of Volunteer Ministry & Children’s Ministry Team Leader, will be assuming coordination of Safeguarding training. Laura maintains the data-base of those staff and volunteers who are required to complete Safeguarding training and will notify individuals when they are due for training. Pam Stewart has assumed coordination of the Diocesan program and will continue to work with Laura as the online program is implemented. Support the Skaneateles Library Book Sale

The Skaneateles Library's 2016 Summer Book Sale begins on Thursday evening, July 7, and runs through Sunday afternoon, July 10. Once again, the Sale is being held in the apparatus bays of the Village Hall, 26 Fennell St. This annual community event cannot happen without a lot of volunteers. Bishop’s election – Diocese of Central New York

By the next edition of The Spirit, our Diocese will have a new bishop. The election will take place on Saturday, August 6.

St. James’ will be represented at this election by three clergy (Becky Coerper, rector; Toppie Bates, priest associate; and Chuck Stewart, deacon) and by four delegates selected by the Vestry. The delegates are: Sharon Arliss, Tory Blum, Ellen Kulik and Rubin Wright.

The candidates for bishop will be present in the diocese for “walk-abouts” in late July. A walk about is an evening when the candidates are introduced, have a opportunity to speak and each is given the same set of questions to answer for the audience.

Everyone is welcome and urged to attend any of the four walk-abouts. The schedule is as follows:

Join Us in Song this July Summer Choir this year is providing opportunity for anyone to join us most Sundays in July. Take part in our Summer Choir on July 3, 17, 24 and 31 (we have a soloist on July 10), and invite your friends who like to sing. There are no Thursday rehearsals during the summer. Simply meet in the choir room at 8:20 any Sunday you would like to sing, and we will prepare a simple anthem. The choir will not process or vest. We will sit in the congregation and go to the chancel at the Peace. After receiving communion, we will return to our seats in the congregation. If any questions, contact Kip at [email protected]

Feed the hungry, share a smile

On the last Saturday of every month, enthusiastic volunteers from St. James’ go to SS. Peter and John on Genesee Street in Auburn to prepare and serve a delicious hot lunch at the soup kitchen there. We serve as many as 140 people —ranging in age from infants to older than 90. We need six or seven volunteers for 10 a.m. (new time) to 11:30 a.m. (chopping fruit and vegetables, making salad and sandwiches) and seven or eight for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (serving and taking down tables and chairs). Upcoming dates: July 30, August 27, September 24

We have a devoted group of volunteers but are always looking for additional hands to help. Some of our volun-teers work almost every month, others work one Saturday a year, and some are “one and done.” ALL are welcome, but we need to let soup kitchen organizers know who will be volunteering ahead of time. There are no special skills needed. You must be 13 or older and wear a hat (baseball cap is fine) and closed-toe shoes. The SPIRIT of St. James’ So much to do but maybe a break is better

Summer is here and school is out. As a mother of two, I have noticed that my youngest is definitely ready for a break. Today’s culture encourages active children participating in all kinds of activities including sports, musical instruments, dance, clubs, extra academic classes, church groups, etc. While all this scheduling keeps kids engaged in positive behaviors, it can take a toll. As with most things, moderation is best. Or it is recommended to at least take a break. Summer is the perfect time to take that break. Below are some warning signs to look for if your child is overscheduled from RealSimple.com:

All tuckered out You never see your child just doing nothing Your child complains of aches and pains or is not feeling right Your child no longer finds what used to be fun, fun anymore Grades in school drop You and your child spend too much time in the car Your child is moody and anxious Your child’s best friend isn’t around anymore Family mealtime is a thing of the past Your child is suddenly needy You, yourself are tired

We all want our children happy and not plugged in to the numerous electronic devices available today. However, there is only one chance to be a child. They will join the ranks of us overscheduled adults soon enough. Help your children to “chill out” this summer. Let them use their imaginations to find things to do at home or with you. When they tell you “I’m bored,” you can say, “It is for your own good.” May each of you have a wonderful summer filled with family memories that will last a lifetime. Our next big activity is on Sept. 11 for the Sunday School Kickoff & Picnic. In the meantime, be sure to say hi on Sunday!

Audio Visual technology and worship at St. James’

In case you have wondered about the plan for use of the new screens during worship at St. James’, we thought it would be helpful to explain the intention.

St. James’ has four distinct weekly worship services – three on Sunday and one on Wednesday. These unique services are central to our identity and are a gift we offer to the community. The plan is for these distinctions to remain.

As part of this distinction, the screens will primarily be used at the 10:30 casual and contemporary service. Here they augment – and will eventually replace – the bulletins. The screens will occasionally be used at all three Sunday services when pictures or PowerPoint presentations would make a significant contribution to the sermon.

Please feel free to direct any questions or observations about the use of the screens and audio-visual technology to any member of the staff or Vestry.

The Rev. Chuck Stewart, deacon, assigned to St. James’

The Episcopal Church raises up and ordains three “orders” of clergy – deacons, priests and bishops. Each order has a unique and clearly defined calling or role in the life of the church. Deacons are called to “a special ministry of servanthood directly under the bishop. In the name of Jesus Christ ... to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick and the lonely”... and “to interpret to the Church the needs and concerns and hopes of the world.” By God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, Chuck Stewart was ordained a deacon on Saturday, June 24. The Bishop has assigned Chuck to begin his diaconal ministry at St. James’ in Skaneateles. We are THRILLED, having presented Chuck for this ministry to have him now serving with and among us. By his Letter of Agreement, Chuck will work a maximum of 10 hours a week, 30 hours a month. His primary responsibilities will be providing leadership for our mission discernment and subsequent mission endeavors. He will also write for the newsletter, periodically facilitate classes or workshops, lead mission trips to El Salvador, and assist in weekly worship performing those tasks designated specifically for deacons. Please hold Chuck in your prayers as he begins this most joyous and important season of his life as a follower of Jesus Christ.

The SPIRIT of St. James’ An Experience of Profound Gratitude and Blessing

Since the Confirmands’ Celebration Dinner on June 12 and Confirmation on June14, there has been much reflection on the parts of clergy, staff, confirmands, their mentors, their parents and families. The resounding and reoccurring theme is one of amazing gratitude for how the love of God is pervasive and so abundant. On that Sunday in the late afternoon Confirmands invited their families and mentor to join them at their table for a scrumptious meal. The parents donated all the ingredients and time for preparation. There were centerpieces, gift and cards. Parish members helped in room set up, meal preparation and clean up. And in return for all given them, each of the Confirmands ex-pressed their faith in beautiful well-chosen words. The evening was a gift of giving and receiving for each one present. A profound thank you to all the people of St. James’ who generously kept our young people in their prayers these past 10 months and wrote wonderfully thoughtful cards of congratulation. The stacks of cards at their tables were such a surprise. This evening was a lasting memory that left the clergy with the desire to see this Confirmand Celebration become a tradition here at St. James’. The class of 12 young adults then on Tuesday evening stood before the Bishop proclaiming their allegiance to the teachings of Jesus Christ, renouncing the works of evil, and proclaiming Jesus as their Savior and Lord. The setting of Sts. Peter and John in Auburn was a sparkling example of God’s goodness and presence in the lives of many parishes in this western corner our diocese. There were 210 peo-ple present to witness over 30 experiencing the laying on of the Bishop’s hands. Their spirits have been dedicated to the workings of God in their personal future, as well as in the life of their parish and beyond. Thanks be to God! And as the concluding prayer said: Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Stephen Ministry News

We are excited to share with our St. James’ family that two new Stephen Ministers will be trained this summer as leaders, Debra Brillati and Pam Stewart. They are both trained Stephen Ministers and will attend a week of training in Pittsburgh as a Stephen Leader. We will work together as a team to continue to enrich pastoral care for our church family. Stephen Ministry started at St. James’ 15 years ago when Bishop Skip, Kathy Crowther, Colleen Fisher and Gay Hembach went for the leadership training. They began a pastoral ministry that continues to grow. Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide one-on-one care to people in our parish family who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. We all experience challenges but having someone to care, to listen, to share God's love with you can help you get through the confusion, stress, or loneliness you may be experiencing, as we continue to “love one another as I have loved you.”

Even though we don't have a specific time for our parish nurses being in, they are always willing to help you with questions you may have, or blood pressure checks or whatever you need on the medical front. Nancy Corl and Jean Gannon are willing to help you with any health concern.

delivered to us. It was very nice of you to think of us. We are enjoying them immensely. Most of the time people enter Town hall looking to obtain something or with a request for services. It is very rare that someone walks in with a gift with no strings attached. It really brightened our day, thank you. I enjoyed our interview last week. We are excited about the possibilities that were presented. We look forward to having the congregation coordinate with our outreach program to serve the needs of our community. Thank you again for all that you do within the community and for our delicious tray of treats.

The SPIRIT of St. James’ In response from the Orlando tragedy, a message from Bishop Skip

"Continue to be the presence of Christ’s love." Dear People of Central New York, In the wake of the horrors perpetrated in Orlando, I once again find myself struggling with the presence of evil in the world. As I write, details are still emerging, but the powers of evil lying behind this act of terror seem to include homophobia, claimed ties with extremist Islam, do-mestic abuse, the availability of assault weapons, and perhaps untreated mental illness. In our baptismal liturgy we promise to “renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God” and “to follow and obey Jesus as our Lord.” At all times, but especially now, we can fulfill these promises by making our living faith evident in our words and actions. You may recall the words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who said after meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I felt like my feet were praying.” So please, join me in prayer and action. We pray for the victims, for their families, and for the first respond-ers who experience their own trauma. We pray for our Muslim neighbors who will receive undeserved backlash. We pray for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who are grieving, angry and afraid. We pray for our enemies, for those with whom we disagree, and for those who react to this horror in fear and hatred. And we pray for all people who will respond to evil by working with love and renewed diligence for God’s peace and justice on the earth. We must not react to the powers of evil and violence with hateful words or deeds. As disciples, we re-spond to evil with good, respond to hate with acts of love that show our respect for the digni-ty of every human being. As hard as it may be, especially so soon after such a tragedy, our Lord even calls us to pray for our enemies. Such prayer is not acquiescence or even passive resignation; it is how we become the presence of God’s love in the world.As your prayer and conscience lead you, continue to be the presence of Christ’s love anywhere you may be. Be a voice of hope. Be a voice of calm and reason. Be thoughtful; be kind. Above all, know that we are held in God’s deep embrace by the one who promises never to let us go. In Christ,

As the days moved on following the tragedy and loss of innocent life in Orlando last Saturday evening, I have felt the need to speak to the people of St. James’ about this event. Two things in particular have moved me to speak at this time. First, my heart was deeply troubled when reading and listening to people in the Latino and LGBTQ communities speak so honestly about feeling unsafe and fearful in public simply because of who they are. Our nation was born with words proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence, that “...we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” But today there are entire segments of our population, who in fact don’t have the same access to these unalienable Rights as others do. There are far too many people – Latino, LGBTQ, Muslim, African-American, and others, who live daily with the reality that they must be guarded, except at home or in carefully chosen gatherings. Second, though it is a complex and controversial topic, my conscience leads me to speak on the subject of gun violence. It’s past time to do something to change the tide of what has become “normal” in our country: news of innocent people killed by automatic or semi-automatic weapons. The Gospel reading for today describes a man whose life is overrun by demons. Because of their hold on him, he was unable to flourish as God created him. One could say our nation is profoundly affected by forces that hold us captive and keep us from flourishing. On June 5, five people were baptized at St. James’. They made the same vows spoken at every baptism: “to renounce the evil powers of this world that corrupt and destroy the people of God.” That vow is our vow. On June 14, 12 St. James’ young people were con-firmed. All in attendance renewed our baptismal covenant repeating this vow: with God’s help, I will “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.” These vows are meant to shape our behavior and inform our choices as followers of Jesus Christ. Along with Bishop Skip [see his June 14 letter found on the Diocesan website] I urge you to listen to your conscience and let it lead you to prayer and action. And may all of our actions be infused with the infinite love of our heavenly Father, the un-surpassing grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the peace-making power of the Holy Spirit. And with God’s help, by taking steps we do not yet see, God’s Kingdom will reign on earth.

Everything you need to follow the service is printed in the bulletin which you will receive at the door. There are no reserved seats. Each Sunday, greeters are available to answer your questions. Our rectors and church staff are here to help you in any way. There are blue welcome cards in each pew that make it easy to leave contact information, just drop them in the offering or give to one of our greeters.
