Are We Home? Or Are We Far Away?

YAMILY BASS-CHOATE MISSIONER FOR LATINO AND HISPANIC MINISTRY, DIOCESE OF NEW YORK

The Rev. Yamily Bass-Choate (GTS Class of 1999), has been appointed Missioner for Latino and Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of New York. In her position as Vicar of San Andres Episcopal Church in Yonkers, NY, Bass-Choate has established numerous outreach programs, including after school programs, a summer camp for neighborhood children, immigration counseling, and guidance in accessing social and economic resources. From 2001-2005 she was Canon for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Mississippi.

Bass-Choate’s appointment addresses the growth curve for Latino ministry in the Diocese, transitioning from one focusing on immigrants who are Spanish-speaking to a multi-generational ministry that also welcomes and serves English-speaking, bi-cultural Latinos who value the traditions of their parents and grandparents yet have a higher level of acculturation.
