Yaw Berkoh Nketia, ANA President It is that time of the year to wish you and your loved ones season’s greetings. I hope you have a great end of year. You are also welcome to the first edition of the ANA’s seasonal newsletter. As we privately reflect on what went on during the past year and follow up with resolutions to do better in the coming year, let me take this opportunity to do likewise for the ANA. As Amanfoo we are known for excellence, diplomacy, intelligence, hard work, poise and charity. Therefore, the Board entreats you to redirect some of the above qualities towards Prempeh College and to help inculcate such great attributes in future generations. We all beamed with pride at recent successes on campus; in particular, the winning of the “National Science and Math Quiz” in 2017. We know great things are going to be accomplished, with your help of course, under our carefully chosen steps to grow the membership and brotherhood, raise the $5 million for the Endowment Fund, and support Sofoline with all our might and resources. See you in Virginia during this coming Labor Day weekend Fundraising Dinner Dance. Afehyia pa! PERSONALITY PROFILE: KWADWO ADU TWUM This past summer, Senior Kwadwo Adu Twum (2004) started a mentorship and college placement program. With help from Prempeh tutor Senior Peter Agyemang, students were recruited from the robotics and math & science teams, and groomed to take the SAT tests. After initial screening, Kwadwo selected 9 students for test registration. He supported them financially and paid for their tests, transportation and other related expenses. These students performed exceptionally well with stellar results. With early decision, Kelvin Atta Baafi thus gained admission to Cornell University, New York with a 4-year scholarship worth $76,500 per year. Kwadwo is a nuclear engineer and lives in Minnesota. He is passionate about helping enthusiastic Prempeh graduates gain a footing academically. ANA is appreciative of his efforts and proud to announce the adoption of this program. ANA will financially support the program with Kwadwo’s direction. 2017 UPDATE by J. Kojo Kittah, Editor-in-Chief ANA successfully launched the Amanfoo North America Prempeh Endowment Fund (ANAPEF) this past September at the Annual Reunion held at Springfield Virginia. The theme for the event was “footprints on the sands of time". The event also celebrated the class of 1974/76. At the business meeting, Amanfoo discussed the policies and governance structure of the newly formed ANAPEF. Senior Dr. Adubofour (1974/76) gave an insightful presentation on diabetes. Senior Clifford Mpare (1974/76) also spoke about the Ghana investment climate and opportunities. The highlight of the 3-day reunion was the fundraising dinner dance. His Excellency Senior Dr. Barfour Adjei-Barwuah (1960/62), Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, was guest of honor. Senior Yaw Asare-Aboagye (1974/76) chaired the event. He recalled nostalgic school activities during the 70’s and read a letter from the very first student admitted in 1949. He also entreated all Alumni to support the school. Keynote speaker, Senior Kofi Bonner (1974/76), shared his experience from a recent visit to the school. He acknowledged the excellent academic achievements of the current crop of students. Prempeh College won the 2016 edition of the World Robotics Competition held in Michigan, and recently won the 2017 National Science and Math Competition. Seniors Kofi Bonner and Yaw Asare-Aboagye each made a donation of $10,000 towards the ANAPEF, setting the tone for the evening. At close of day, $86,165.80 had been raised in both cash and pledges, bringing the total contributions raised in 2017 to over $100,000.00. The first ANA lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Senior Dr. Kwaku Ohene- Frempong (1964/66), professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and director of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana. ANA and ANAPEF continue to seek ideas on attracting secure sustainable contributions for the endowment fund with an intermediate goal of $1 million fund.
