Introduction

Swat is a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. It is the upper valley of the Swat River, which rises in the Hindu Kush range.

The capital of Swat is Saidu Sharif, but the main town in the Swat valley is Mingora. The valley is almost entirely populated by ethnic Gujjar, Kohistani and Pashtuns. The languages spoken in the valley are Gojri, Kohistani and Pashto.

With high mountains, green meadows, and clear lakes, it is a place of great natural beauty and is popular with tourists. Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to the State of Swat called it "the Switzerland of the east."

History of Swat:

Valley Swat, has a long and very rich history. In fact, Swat Valley History begins over 2000

years ago when the very first residents settled there.

Back then, the town known today as Valley Swat was called Udyana and later Suvastu.

Many Buddhists settling there as well in the second century BC. Unfortunately the peace ended in the 11th century AD, turning a new page in Swat Valley History. During this time, the area was invaded by Mahmud of Ghazni and was eventually taken over by the Dilazak and later, the Yusufzais.

In the 19th century, however, Akhund Sahib came to control the land, and all of the rules changed.

The valley began to be ruled under peaceful Muslim laws.

The conflicts finally stopped , and the agriculture, trade, and business areas began to thrive as a result. Unfortunately, when Sahib died, fighting started again. Today, however, the area is considered peaceful and even well established, despite these many setbacks and upheavals.

MINGORA:

Mingora is the district headquarter and commercial centre of Swat. the Swat Museum, located between Mingora and Saidu, has a rich collection of Gandhara art which is worth viewing.Mingora is one of the most important town of the Swat Valley . It is situated 2km from Saidu Sharif. On the other side of River Swat near Mingora Airport a site of Gandhara Grave Culture was discovered by Italians at Aligrama

Butkara (Butkada) Stupa:

One of the most important Buddhist shrines in Swat, is near the museum. Take the dirt track on the left (north) side of the museum for one kilometer (about half a mile). The stupa is 400 meters (above a quarter of mile) across the fields to the left (north). . Italian excavators working in 1955 exposed the successive layers of the stupa

Kalam:

Kalam, 29 kilometres (18 miles) from Bahrain and about 2,000 meters (6,800 feet) above sea level, the valley opens out, providing rooms for a small but fertile plateau above the river. In Kalam the Ushu and Utrot rivers join to form the Swat river. Here, the metalled road ends and shingle road leads to the Ushu and Utrot valleys

Bahrain:

Bahrain is ten kilometres north of Madyan and only slightly higher, at about 1,400 meters (4,500 feet). It is another popular riverside tourist resort,where the two river of swat meet together on a large mass of rock called BAHRIAN also with bazaars worth exploring for their handicrafts. Some of the houses have carved wooden doors, pillars and balconies.

Lakes of Swat Valley:

Mohodand Lake:Mohodand Lake is on a jeep trek from Kalam passing through Ushu Jungle and Mutiltan Valley. It is a very worth seen place. You can see many water falls on the way to Mohodand Lake.

Kundalo Lake:

It is in Utrot valley.One day trek from Kalam will take you to Kundalo Lake. It is still untouch lake.It is full of trout and one can do fishing in it.

FOOD

Swat Valley is an ideal place for trekking and fishing. One can take a walk from Kalam to Ushu. The trek takes leads to some beautiful spots between Kalam and Ushu. Visitors who want a taste of northern Pakistan's historical variety should head for this lush valley.

Weather Variation

-In Winter at higher ranges like mountains and it’s surroundings are covered with snow at -10 °C minimum to maximum -30°C and at lower ranges there is really less snow or no snow at all with minimum 5°C to maximum 15°C-In summer at higher and lower ranges its mostly rainy season or sunny

The finest quality of emerald is produced in Swat. Its Color and transparency is unique. It is the best in world. It is exported to the international markets: There is an export potential of 500 million dollars in this sector, provided it is excavated and cut as per international standards. Before the absorption of Swat in Pakistan, the emeralds of Swat were better in quality, and greater in quantity. But since then it is said that the quantity of production is little, and the quality devalued.
