Chalom L’atid:

IN 2017, we will mark the 150th anniversary of our congregation. We take justifiable pride in the legacy of our history and recognize that former generations of leaders have built The Temple into one of the

largest and most distinguished Reform Jewish congregations in the world. We are a congregation where Jewish learning opens hearts and minds, where prayer provides spiritual nourishment, where acts of social justice can begin to change the world.

In every way, The Temple relies on the support of our members and those in our community. We owe our very existence to those first families who came together and pooled their resources to establish our spiritual home. The unwavering support from our members has afforded us a beautiful, well-maintained campus, inno-vative engagement opportunities, and a diverse rabbinical and professional staff to lead our congregation.

Now, as we look ahead to the next 150 years, it is our time to accept the challenge to preserve and strengthen what past generations have built. A strong endowment allows us to continue to be a visionary congrega-tion and to be a resource for our members and for the Reform movement. For this reason, The Temple has embarked on the Chalom L’atid: Dream for Tomorrow campaign.

In the past weeks, I hope you have seen plenty of information about the campaign! You have received a brochure in the mail and may have noticed the campaign information on The Temple’s website, our emails and

our bulletin. I hope you have taken the time to review all of this information and learn more about the importance of a strong endowment.

Our campaign leaders and I have been thrilled with the response to the campaign thus far. Donors of all ages and stages of life have stepped forward in extraordinary ways to support the future of The Temple. If you have not yet done so, I hope you will thoughtfully consider your family’s commit-ment to this important effort. Now is the time!

Please consider joining with me and your fellow Temple members in Dreaming for Tomorrow by making a multi-year pledge, a planned gift, or both.

Our generation faces the challenge of providing permanence for The Temple’s standard of excellence. Thanks to you, this Endowment Cam-

paign will help establish financial stability for future generations. Cre-ating a strong endowment is the most important thing we can be doing for the future of our beloved Temple.

For more information on the endowment campaign, please visit www.the-temple.org/dream or contact Mark Jacobson, Executive Director at 404-873-1731.

TomorrowDream forTHE TEMPLE’S ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN:

Investing for 2017 and Beyond

4Our WELC students are “Reaching for the Future” in front of our new Dream for Tomorrow banners.

Temple on the Road—Bringing Shabbat to You!Friday, May 22 • 6:00 PM The Temple is returning to Sandy Springs! Join us for a music-filled, traffic-free Shabbat service at Hammond Park – this time should be perfect for outdoor fun! Please bring a snack or dessert to share for a potluck-style oneg (reception) immediately following the service. And don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs. Contact Summer Jacobs at [email protected] for more information.

Mini Shabbat Mornings Saturday, May 9 • 9:30 AMLooking for something to do with your little one on a Saturday morning? Infants through pre-schoolers and their families are invited to join us on the second Saturday of every month at 9:30 AM in the Covenant Chapel for singing and a story with our puppets, followed by a bagel snack and then playground time. We’ll play on our beautiful outdoor Sonia’s playground or if it rains, on the WELC’s two indoor playgrounds. Please come dressed casually.

There is no fee or RSVP required. Questions? Please contact either Rabbi Loren Filson Lapidus at [email protected] or Edye Summerfield at [email protected].

First Friday @ HOME: Host or Be Hosted for a Young Professional's First Friday Shabbat DinnerFriday, May 1 • 8:00 PMBe a part of the movement we take the soul of First Friday and welcome it into our homes for an evening of special Shabbat dinners. Coming together for monthly services is only one part building community; welcoming others into our homes is the next crucial step in weaving this fabric together.

In lieu of our May First Friday service, we are asking for ten volunteers to host a potluck dinner in your home and for fifty people to sign up to be hosted. Hosts: The Temple will provide 2 challahs, grape juice, Shabbat candles, and a sheet with the basic prayers for Shabbat. We will pair you with guests to coor-dinate the potluck. Guests: We will match you with hosts and you will have the responsibility to bring something wonderful and generous to the table to share. To sign up to host or be hosted, email Joya Schmidt at [email protected]. For questions, email Rabbi Spinrad at [email protected].

Temple Book ClubTuesday, May 12 • 7:30 PM Temple Media CenterThe Jew Store by Stella Suberman and led by Jackie Berkelhamer is the true story of a man who started Bronson’s Low-Priced Store in Concordia, Tennes-see. They were the first Jews to live in this tiny town in 1920 with a population of 5,318.

Told by Aaron’s youngest child, The Jew Store is that rare thing—an intimate family story that sheds new light on a piece of American history. Here is one man’s family with a twist—a Jew, born into poverty in pre-Revolutionary Russia and orphaned at birth, finds his way to America, finds a trade, finds a wife, and sets out to find his fortune in a place where Jews are unwelcome.

Sandwich Salon: Women Connecting & Learning 2015Thanks to all of you who attended, Sandwich Salon had a wonderful inaugu-ral ‘year’! We started in Feburary, 2014 with “My Brilliant But Unusual Career Path” – a wonderful panel of dynamic women: Jenny Levison, Marcia Miller, Jane Turner and Renee Werbin. Food was our focus when Steak Shapiro of Atlanta Eats entertained us in April with lots of fun info about food and places to eat in Atlanta. Our own committee member, Elaine Levine joined Emily Sanders in September for “Empowering Women Through Planning and Crisis Prepa-ration for their Future”. They presented a wealth of information about issues important to us all. In December Bill Nigut talked with us about state and national politics after the mid-term elections and how the 2016 elections will begin to take shape. We began 2015 getting organized….Leslie Walden, a certified professional organizer presented loads of tips that went way beyond organizing your desk or closet. Her topic, “It’s Time to get Organized: Your Brain and Your Focus” was well received. We closed out the season with a fantastic late April discus-sion about the arts in Atlanta; “Symphony, Opera, Theater…The High! What can we Learn from the Arts?” That amazing panel included Temple members Catherine Fox (ArtsAtl), and Mira Hirsch (Theatrical Outfit). They were joined by Ahmad Mayes (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) and Temple Board member and playwright Hank Kimmel.

Planning is already underway for 2015-16. Please mark your calendars now for the next two sessions of Sandwich Salon: Women Connecting & Learning. Our own Temple clergy will join with us on October 13 for a panel entitled “Ask the Clergy”! Come with lots of questions and really get to know our wonderful team. And on December 1, Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspon-dent will join us to talk about her book The Empowered Patient. The committee promises more interesting topics and fantastic guests in 2016!

Have a great summer.Linda Davis, Elaine Levine, Marcy Solmson, Beth Thomsen, Pam Wangel

Men's Slow-Pitch Softball LeagueThe Temple has two teams that play in the Synagogue Softball League, a men’s slow-pitch league. The league has about 25 teams from over 20 synagogues and plays from early June through late August. If you or other Temple members who you know are interested in playing, please contact Steve Tapper at [email protected] or 404-444-0143. Both teams' rosters are fairly full, but we have a few spots open every season; plus, we also need reserves for games where we are short on players, which is fairly common due to summer vacations and other conflicts.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT THE LEAGUE:• players generally must be at least 18 years old (players are from a wide

range in ages)• games are only on Sundays (times vary between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM)• one or two practices before the season starts (no practices once games start)• regular season is 10 games, followed by double-elimination playoffs.

Daytime Discussion GroupWednesday, May 20 • 10:30 AMMy mother used to say she wasn’t a “Spring Chicken” any longer when faced with a difficult physical task. You don’t hear that expression much anymore.

How does the fact we aren’t “Spring Chickens” anymore make itself known? Are we ambushed by aches, pains and suddenly obvious changes? Are we con-fronted by wrinkle creams that no longer erase the years, or youth-oriented clothes that don’t hang gracefully on our bodies? How do we get used to what is happening to us physically?

There are books for adolescents on “what’s happening to your body,” but it seems that we may have to write our own! So let’s talk about it. There’s no Lunch and Learn this month, so at the end we’ll spend a little time on what we’d like for our group over the summer months.

Zaban Couples CenterTHE NEXT PHASE BEGINSSpring is the season for rebirth and for hope. For the residents of the Zaban Couples Center it is a time for new beginnings as well. The residential season ends April 30th and the residents take the learning and support they received with them as they begin to live independently again. The Center will continue to provide valuable programs for former residents throughout the spring and summer.

For those interested in volunteering in the coming months, there are a number of maintenance and administrative opportunities available. For more information please email [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support.

Caring at The TempleOur Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pas-toral need, providing homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We recently celebrated our 575th soup delivery, and nearly every step of the program—from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about fel-low congregants in need—is led by members of our congregation.

Thanks to our Caring at The Temple volunteer who delivered soup this month: Lara Geller Church

To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholimI (visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi David Spinrad at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

92nd Street Y @ The Temple Program Broadcast This program is made possible by Marc Weinberg in honor of Chuck and Lisa Taylor. Each broadcast will be followed by a discussion relevant to the topic. All technological issues have been properly addressed and enhanced. Upcoming programs include:

DAVID BROOKS: ON CHARACTERSunday, May 3 @ 3 PM–5 PM **Please Note Time Change **Join New York Times columnist David Brooks for an in-depth discussion about what constitutes character as explored in his new book.

Some people seem to possess inner lives that are more substantive than the rest of ours. How do they do it? Depth, argues Brooks, is the core of our being and something we cultivate over time; it’s engraved by thought and action; it’s built through the commitments we make—to a nation, a faith, a calling or loved ones—and the sacrifices we endure because of those commitments.

Annual MeetingFriday, May 8 • 5:00 PMAs a Temple community, we are proud of the caliber of our leader-ship—their thoughtfulness, creativity, and menschlikiet. At our Annual Meet-ing, we will thank our outgoing board members and welcome our newest additions, as well as engage in the sacred task of living our values through our bud-get approval. Join us for the Annual Meeting at 5:00 PM and Shabbat services at 6:00 PM, followed by a beautiful Shabbat dinner, and be a part of celebrating the upcom-ing year of powerful leadership.
