WehaverecentlyhadaverygenerousdonationofsixhardbackcopiesofWalterA.CarrithersJr.book“MadameBlavatsky:TheCaseforHerDefense”senttousfromDanielCaldwell (USA)whohaseditedandabridged thisedition.This is a very importantbookas it completelydestroys theHodsonReportwhich was an 1885 “investigative” report by the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) on Helena P.Blavatsky and her phenomena which went on to claim her to be “one of the most accomplished,ingeniousandinterestingimpostersinhistory”.AclaimlaterretractedbytheSPRover100yearslater.ManycriticsofHPBstillusethisnowlongdiscredited,unprofessionalandverybiasedreportasabasisforattackingthesocietyandHPB’sextraordinarypsychicabilities.Wehaveplaced2copiesinourlibraryandtherestwillbeavailableforsaleinthebookshopata20%discounttomembers.

Perth Branch 120 years AnniversarySunday June 18th, 2017

OnSundaythe18thofJune2017weweretreatedtoaverywellpreparedhistoryofthePerthLodgeover thepast 120 years.Although calleda ‘Branch’ thesedays, thewriter tends toprefer touse thedescriptionof‘Lodge’tofitwiththehistoricalbackground.Thewriter had the honor of facilitating the signing of the Visitor’s book by everyonewho attendedwhethertheyarecurrentmember,pastmemberoravisitor.Onpreviousoccasions,justthesignaturehadbeenenteredbutitwaswiselysuggestedbySkipPrythateveryonefirstlyprinttheirfullnameandsign as well to enable clear identification of individual attendees (and allow the group photo to betaggedaccurately).Onlastcount,54peopleattendedontheday.FromitssmallbeginningsviathePatterson’s,wewereabletofollowthedevelopmentoftheLodgefromitsCharterin1897.ViewingtheoriginalCharterdocumenthighonthemainhallwalltendstolendsolidmaterialwitnesstoavitalandcreativeeventallthoseyearsago.Thewonderfulbriefvideoof96yearoldlifememberEnidHillwhojoinedthePerthLodgeattheageoffourteenabout5monthsbeforeher15thbirthdayin1935wastestamenttoalifewelllivedasaTheosophistandwewereinformedthatEnid’sextraordinarymemoryservedusallwellbynominatingalmostallthenamesofthoseappearingin very old Lodge group photos. It should also be highlighted that there were a number of currentmembers present on the daywho between them account for a substantial length ofMembership, amarkofgenuine loyaltytotheLodgeandwhat itstandsfor.Thewriter found itespecially interestingthat there were a handful of attendees who in fact appeared in past photos including two ladies,LarraineWroth(néeHill)daughtertoEnidHillandGayReid(néeCombs)whowerearound11yearsofageatthetimewhenthe60thlodgeanniversarywasheldin1957.OnecanonlyhopethatouryoungestmemberJasmineFarghaly,atpresent14,whoattendedthecelebrationswillbewithusinanother60years’timetorelatefirsthandcontemporaryLodgeevents.Whatarichtapestry.FollowingthehistoryofthevariousbuildingsthattheLodgeoccupiedovertheyearsmakesforareallyinterestingstoryandit’ssuggestedthatthecurrentmembershipisindeedfortunatetooccupyandhavefreeholdownershipofitscurrentpremises.Thewriterwasleftwithastrongsenseofbrotherhoodandgenuineco-operation,surelyvirtuesthataremorethaneverneededinadividedworld.-JohnDavey

Sincere interest in Theosophic truth is oftenfollowedbysincereaspirationafterTheosophiclife, and the question continually recurs, whataretheconditionsandthestepstochelaship;towhom should application bemade; how is theaspiranttoknowthatithasbeengranted?As to the conditions and the discipline ofchelaship,nota littlehasbeendisclosed inTheTheosophist,Man,EsotericBuddhism,andotherworks upon Theosophy; and some of thequalifications, difficulties, and dangers havebeen very explicitly set forth by MadameBlavatsky in her article upon "TheosophicalMahatmas" in the Path of December 1886. Toeveryone cherishing even a vague desire forcloser relations to the system of developmentthrough which Masters are produced, thethoughtful study of this article is earnestlycommended. Itwill clear thegroundof severalmisconceptions, deepen the sense of theseriousness of such an effort, and excite ahealthyself-distrustwhichisbetterbeforethanafterthegatehasbeenpassed.It is entirely possible, however, that thesearchingofdesireandstrengthincitedbythatarticle may only convince more strongly ofsincerity, and that not a few readers mayemerge from it with a richer purpose and adeeper resolve. Even where there is not adistinct intentiontoreachchelaship,theremaybeaneageryearningforgreaternearnesstotheMasters, for some definite assurance ofguidance and of help. In either of these casesthequestionatoncearisesbeforetheaspirant,Whoistoreceivetheapplication,andhowisitsacceptancetobesignified?Theverynatural, indeedtheinstinctive,stepofsuchanaspirantistowritetoanofficerofthe

Theosophical Society. None the less is this amistake. For the Theosophical Society is anexoteric body, the Lodge of Masters whollyesoteric. The former is a voluntary group ofinquirers and philanthropists, with avowedaims, a printed Constitution, and publishedofficers, and, moreover, expressly disavowinganypower,asaSociety,tocommunicatewithMasters;thelatterisanOccultLodge,ofwhoseaddress, members, processes, functions,nothing is known. It follows, therefore, thatthere is no person, no place, no address, towhichanaspirantmayappeal.Let it be supposed, however, that such aninquiry is preferred to a person advanced inOccult study, versed in its methods and testsandqualifications.Assuredlyhisreplywouldbedirectlytothiseffect:--"Ifyouwerenowfittedtobeanacceptedchela,youwouldofyourselfknowhow,where,andtowhom to apply. For the becoming a chela inrealityconsistsintheevolutionordevelopmentof certain spiritual principles latent in everyman, and in great measure unknown to yourpresentconsciousness.Untiltheseprinciplesaretosomedegreeconsciouslyevolvedbyyou,youarenot inpracticalpossessionof themeansofacquiringthefirstrudimentsofthatknowledgewhichnowseemstoyousodesirable.Whetheritisdesiredbyyourmindorbyyourheartisstillanotherimportantquestion,nottobesolvedbyanyonewhohasnotyetthecluetoSelf."Itistruethatthesequalitiescanbedeveloped(or forced) by the aid of an Adept. And mostapplicantsforchelashipareactuatedbyadesireto receive instructions directly from theMasters.Theydonotaskthemselveswhattheyhave done tomerit a privilege so rare.Nor dotheyconsiderthat,allAdeptsbeingservantsofthe Law of Karma, itmust follow that, did theapplicant nowmerit their visible aid, hewouldalreadypossessitandcouldnotbeinsearchofit. The indications of the fulfilment of the Laware, in fact, the partial unfolding of thosefacultiesabovereferredto."Youmust, then, reachapointother than thatwhereyounowstand,beforeyoucanevenaskto be taken as a chela on probation. AllcandidatesentertheunseenLodgeinthis

The Theosophical Link 7 manner, and it is governed by Laws containingwithin themselves theirown fulfilmentandnotrequiring any officers whatever. Nor must youimagine that such a probationer is one whoworks under constant and known direction ofeither an Adept or another chela. On thecontrary,heistriedandtestedforatleastsevenyears,andperhapsmanymore,beforethepointis reached when he is either accepted (andprepared for the first of a series of initiationsoftencoveringseveralincarnations),orrejected.Andthisrejectionisnotbyanybodyofmenjustas they incline, but is the natural rejection byNature. The probationermay ormay not hearfromhisTeacherduringthispreliminaryperiod;moreoftenhedoesnothear.Hemaybefinallyrejectedandnotknowit,justassomemenhavebeenonprobationandhavenotknown ituntiltheysuddenlyfoundthemselvesaccepted.Suchmenarethoseself-developedpersonswhohavereached that point in the natural order aftermany incarnations, where their expandedfacultieshaveentitledthemtoanentranceintothe Hall of Learning or the spiritual Lodgebeyond.Andall I sayofmenappliesequally towomen."When anyone is regularly accepted as a chelaon probation, the first and only order hereceives (for thepresent) is toworkunselfishlyforhumanity -- sometimesaidingandaidedbysome older chela --while striving to get rid ofthe strength of the personal idea. Theways ofdoing thisare left tohisown intuitionentirely,inasmuch as the object is to develop thatintuitionandtobringhimtoself-knowledge.Itishis having these powers in some degree thatleadstohisacceptanceasaprobationer,sothatitismorethanprobablethatyouhavethemnotyetsaveas latentpossibilities. Inordertohavein his turn any title to help, hemust work forothers, but that must not be his motive forworking. He who does not feel irresistiblyimpelledtoservetheRace,whetherhehimselffailsornot,isboundfastbyhisownpersonalityand cannot progress until he has learned thatthe race ishimself andnot thatbodywhichhenowoccupies.ThegroundofthisnecessityforapuremotivewasrecentlystatedinLucifertobethat 'unless the intention is entirely unalloyed,thespiritualwilltransformitselfintothe

psychic,actontheastralplane,anddireresultsmaybeproducedby it. Thepowers and forcesof animal nature can be equally used by theselfish and revengeful as by the unselfish andall-forgiving;thepowersandforcesofspiritlendthemselvesonlytotheperfectlypureinheart.'"Itmaybestated,however,thateventhosenaturalforcescannotbediscoveredbyanymanwhohasnotobtained thepowerof getting ridof his personality in some degree. That anemotionaldesire tohelpothersdoesnot implythis freedom from personalitymay be seen bythe fact that, if you were now perfected inunselfishnessintherealsense,youwouldhaveaconsciousexistenceseparatefromthatofthebodyandwouldbeabletoquitthebodyatwill:inotherwords,tobefreefromallsenseofselfis to be an Adept, for the limitations of selfinhibitprogress."HearalsothewordsoftheMaster,takenfromSinnett's The Occult World. 'Perhaps you willbetterappreciateourmeaningwhentoldthatinourviewthehighestaspirationsforthewelfareofhumanitybecometaintedwithselfishness if,inthemindofthephilanthropist,therelurkstheshadowofadesireforself-benefitoratendencyto do injustice, even when these existunconsciouslytohimself.'"While setting forth these facts, aswell as thedangers and difficulties -- both those set onesappointed by the laws of the Lodge and themoreinnumerableonesadjudgedbyKarmaandhastened by the efforts of the neophyte, itshouldalsobestatedthattheMastersdesiretodeternomanfromenteringthepath.Theyarewell aware, however, from the repeated trialsand records of centuries, and from theirknowledgeofourracialdifficulties,howfewarethepersonswhohaveanycluetotheirownrealnature, which is the foe they attempt toconquerthemomenttheybecomepupilsoftheoccult. Hence They endeavor, so far as Karmapermits,toholdunfitindividualsbackfromrashventures,theresultsofwhichwouldrecoilupontheir unbalanced lives and drive them todespair.Thepowersofevil,inadequatelydefiedbythe ignorantman,revengethemselvesuponhim as well as upon his friends, and not uponthosewhoareabovetheirreach.Although

Their descent in suchinstancescannotbeprevented;itisKarma."To loseall senseof self, then, implies the lossof all that ordinary men most value inthemselves.It therefore behoves you to seriously considerthesepoints:"1st. What is your motive in desiring to be achela? You think thatmotive is well known toyou,whereas it ishiddendeepwithinyou,andbythathiddenmotiveyouwillbejudged.Ithasflaredupfromunseenregionsuponmensureofthemselves, has belched out in some luridthought or deed of which they esteemedthemselvesincapable,andhasoverthrowntheirlifeorreason.ThereforetestyourselfereKarmatestsyou."2nd. What the place and duties of a trueneophyteare."When you have seriously considered both fortwenty-one days, you may, if your desireremainsfirm,takeacertaincourseopentoyou.Itisthis."AlthoughyoudonotnowknowwhereyoucanofferyourselftoMastersthemselvesasachelaonprobation,yet,informingthatdesireinyourheartandinre-affirmingit(ifyoudo)afterdueconsiderationofthesepoints,youhavethentosome extent called upon the Law, and it iswithin your power to constitute yourself adisciple,sofarasinyoulies,throughthepurityofyourmotiveandeffortifbotharesufficientlysustained. No one can fix a period when thiseffortwill bear fruit, and, if your patience andfaitharenotstrongenoughtobearyouthroughan unlimited (so far as you know) period ofunselfish work for humanity, you had betterresignyourpresentfancy,foritisthennomorethanthat.But ifotherwise,youaretoworkforthe spiritualenlightenmentofHumanity inandthrough the Theosophical Society (whichmuchneedssuchlaborers),andinallothermodesandplanesasyoubestcan, remembering theword

ofMasters: 'Hewho doeswhat he can and allthat he can, and all that he knows how to do,does enough for us.' This task includes that ofdivesting yourself of all personality throughinterioreffort,becausethatwork,ifdoneintheright spirit, isevenmore important to the racethananyoutwardworkwecando.Livingasyounow are, on the outward plane chiefly, yourwork isduethereand istobedonethereuntilyour growth shall fit you to pass away from italtogether."In following this course you work towards afixed point under observation -- as is, indeed,thewholeTheosophicbody,whichisnow,asabody, a chela ofMasters, but specialized fromothermembers in the sense that your definiteaim and trust are understood and taken intoconsideration by the unseen Founders and theLaw. The Theosophical Society then stands toyou,forthetimebeing,asanyolderchelamightwhowasappointed foryou toaidand toworkunder. You are not, understand, a chela onprobation, since no one without authority canconferorannounce suchaprivilege.But if yousucceedinliftingyourselfandothersspiritually,it will be known, no matter what the externalsilence may seem to be, and you will receiveyour full dues from Those who are honestdebtors and ministers of the Just and PerfectLaw.Youmustbereadytowork,towait,andtoaspire in silence, just as all do who have fixedtheir eyes on this goal. Remember that yourtruest adviser is to be found, and constantlysought,withinyourself.Onlybyexperiencecanyoulearntoknowitsvoicefromthatofnaturalinstinct or mere logic, and strengthen thispower, by virtue of which the Masters havebecomewhatTheyare."Your choice or rejection of this course is thefirsttestofyourself.Otherswillfollow,whetheryouareawareof themornot, for thefirstandonly right of the neophyte is -- to be tried.Hencesilenceandsorrowfollowhisacceptanceinsteadoftheofferofpromptaidforwhichhelooks.Yeteventhatshallnotbewanting;thosetrialsandreverseswillcomeonlyfromtheLawtowhichyouhaveappealed."

THE MT. HELENA STORY byJasonBraunstein(fromtheApril/May1984Link)

Aroundabout1975thePerthLodgeencounteredachallenge!Therewasalotofdedicationandurgeforactionamongthemembers,butdifficultyinputtingthesetouse.WeknewthatourpropertywouldberesumedbytheP.W.D.andthisfactmadeitimpossibletocontemplateworkofthebuilding.Builtinthe1920's,itwasdesperatelyinneedofmodernisation,particularlytheflats,butwecoulddonothing.AlanCalvert,apastPresident,hadheardaboutthecountrypropertiestheSocietyhadacquiredintheU.S.A.whereactivitiescouldbecarriedoutthatwerebeyondthescopeofthestandardlodgeformat,andhesuggestedweconsiderdoingsomethingsimilar.TherewasmuchenthusiasmandasmallgroupgottogethertoroughoutaproposaltoputinfrontoftheLodge.Aswesawit,theLodgesystemwasdesigned mainly for lectures and study groups of short duration. It did not lend itself to all day orweekendsessionsnoryettoinformalfamilytypegatherings.Ourfirstobjectrelatedtobrotherhood,yettherewaslittleopportunityformemberseventogettoknowoneanother.Wecametogetheronceaweekat8p.m.tolistentoatalkandbyabout9.15p.m.wedispersedtoourhomes.Theschemewhichwaseventuallyput totheexecutive involvedthepurchaseof land inaruralenvironment,not too farfrom Perth. It would have to be reachable in about an hour from the metropolitan area. It wasunrealistictoexpectpeopletospendmanyhoursdrivingtoaremotelocationforaweekend'sstay.Theexecutiveagreed.OurfirstpurchasewasalargeareaatGidgegannupbutnotlongafterbecomingownerswelearnedoftheWaterSupplyDepartment'sintentiontobuildadamthereandfloodallthelowlyingareas.SowesoldthelandtotheGovernmentatasmallprofitandlookedagain.SometimelaterMargaretBrownandDorotheaSquireslocatedablockforsaleatMt.Helena,havinganareaof8.5hectares(21acres)andwewereinterested.Neitherelectricitynorwatersupplyranontoit,buttheywerenotfaraway.TheS.E.C.agreedtorunahightensionsupplytothepropertyatareasonablecost.WediscussedmatterswiththeWaterSupplyDepartmentwhoagreedtoextendthepipetotheblockbutsaidthatthesupplypressurewouldnotbeadequate.Theysuggestedthatwecouldruntheirwaterintoaholdingtankandpumpitourselves.ThenextstagewastoestablishiftheprojectwouldmeetwiththeapprovaloftheRegionalPlanningAuthorityand theShireCouncil.After someweeksofdiscussionagreement inprinciplewassecured.

The Theosophical Link 11 TheLodgeboughtthelandfor$32,000on12thJanuary,1977.Initialideasfortheprojectincludedthepossibilityof holding the national convention there, but it wassoon realised that itwouldbeunwise todesign foranevent that happened only once every eight years. Amore modest scheme was evolved consisting of fourchalets, toilet/shower block and the main studybuilding.Theideawastoaccommodateabout32personsundercover with the possibility of a few more in tents orcaravans.Atthisstageitwasrealisedthatthefacilities

wouldlacklifeandvitalityandwouldbevulnerabletovandalismandtheftunlessithadpermanenton-siteresidents.TheShireagreedtotwohousesbeingbuiltontheblockinadditiontotheprojectfacility.TheneedwaspublishedtothemembersandinduecourseKevinandMargaretBrownandPhilandEnaHarris began serious discussions with a view to each couple building a house there. The Brownseventuallydecidednottogoahead,buttheHarris’swereabletobuildtheirhouseandtheydidsointhehopethattheywouldnotbealonetoolong.ThebasisonwhichtheHarris’sbuilttheirhousewasthattitletothebuildingwasautomaticallythepropertyoftheT.S.forthwith,so, ineffect,theSocietyreceivedagiftofsome$30,000.InreturntheHarris’sreceivedalifetimeleaseatpeppercornrent.Workbegan.Thefirsttaskwastodealwiththewaterandelectricitysupply.Some700metresoftrenchwasdugforwaterpipe.A13,600litre(3,000gal.)tankwas installedattheroadsidetogetherwithanelectricpump,pressuresensitive,start-on-demandsystemandswitchboard-alltheelectricalworkforthiswascarriedoutbyPhilHarriswho,workingalonetomeetatimedeadline,gotdrenchedbycyclonicrainsandcontractedpleurisy!Installingthepipelinewentahead,undertakenbyasmallgroupofwillingworkers.TreeswerealreadybeingplantedalongthewesternfenceinaccordancewiththerequirementoftheShireCouncil.Wenowconfrontedthetaskofextendingtheelectricitysupplyalongacentrelinetoservicetheproposedtoiletblock,chaletsandtheHarrishouse.Anundergroundsupplywasruledoutimmediatelyasmuchtoocostly.PhilHarrisdrewupaspecificationforathree-phaseaerialrunon10metre(30ft.)polesandquoteswerecalled.Consternationreignedwhenitwasfoundthatthelowestquotationwas$l0,000!AlthoughPhil isanelectricalengineerhehadnoexperience intheerectionofoverheadlines,butafriendofhis,LesBeaman,offeredtosupervisethestickypart-thatis,theraisingofthecable-ifPhilwouldgetthepolesandcrossarmserected.Thiswasdoneoverseveralweekendsofwork.Everyholehadtobeblastedbecauseofrock!Eventuallyallwasready-thepolesinplace,crossarmsandinsulatorsfixed,andateamofmembersassembled.Allwentwelland,thankstothehelpofLesBeaman(notevenamember),somekilometreofheavyaluminiumcablewasinstalledinoneday!Costonly$1,200.In the meantime plans had been drawn up and submitted to council for approval and the buildinglicence having been granted on the 7th March 1978, construction of the Harris house and thetoilet/shower block began. The toilet/shower block was given priority to avoid any criticism by thehealthinspector.Thesetwostructureswerebuiltbyaprofessionalbuilderandcompletedontimewithnoproblems.Thetoiletblockcostwas$14,077. When planning a project such as theMt. Helena Centre there is a strong tendency tomakemoneystretch as far as possible by settling for sub-standardmaterials in construction.Wedecided to resistsuchsuggestionsandbuild indoublebrickonfirstclass foundations. InAugust1978theHarrishousewascompletedandtheytookupresidence.Laterthatyearworkbeganonthefirstchaletwithmemberslayingthefoundationsandthebrickfootings.

The Theosophical Link 12 Wethenhadtheconcretefloorslabputdownbyatradesmanandhiredabricklayertoerectthewalls.Itwasdecidedtobuildthreechaletsfirst,omittingthecentredividingwallfromtheeasternmostchaletso that it could be used as a meeting room pro tem. By November 1979 all three chalets werecompletedandthelodgehadrunoutoffunds.At this stage a generous donationwasmade by amemberwho supplied 12 double decker bunks, 4desks,6linencupboardsandenoughcarpetforthechalets,allfreeofcharge.Anothermemberdonatedthematerialforcurtainsandmadethemup.TheweekendofDecember8thand9th,1979wasamilestone in thehistoryofourproject.Our firstofficialseminarwasheld,usingtheeasternchaletasameetingroomandtheHarris’kitchenformeals.SeventeenmembersattendedwithPhilHarrisasconvenor.Thesubjectwas"AwarenessTechniquesontheSpiritualPath".PennyChidgeyandEnaHarris,bydintofmuchearlypreparation,managedtocaterfortheweekendandalsoattendallsessions.Therewasnowapauseasfarasbuildingworkwasconcerned.WeneededabreakandinanycasetheLodgewasshortoffunds.ThenextstagewastobetheconstructionofastudycomplexandmemberGrahamHowellscarriedoutthedesignworkanddrewtheplansreadyforsubmissiontotheCouncilforapproval.The complexwas to consist of amain hall, a study, a dining hall, a kitchen, two toilets and a deepverandaallround.Atthistimetheestimatedcostof$50,000seemedtoputitintotheremotefuture,butagainamembercametotherescuewithanoffertodonatethematerialcostofthefoundationsandthewholecostoftheconcreteslab.Wedecidedtopresson.On21stSeptember1980thetrenchforthefoundationswasdugwithadedicatedworkingpartyparticipating.Thecostofthefoundationsandslabwasabout$4,000andwewerereadyforthebricklayertobuildthewalls.Nowbeganthemoneyflowwithnumerousdonations,largeandsmall,frommembersandothers,wewereabletocarryon.PerhapsthisisanappropriateplacetomentiononeofourmainsourcesoffinancetheT.S.Bookshop!Ourbookshopwas(andstillis)operatingundersomedifficulty.Itwashousedinmakeshiftquartersinanoldhouse,followingtheresumptionofourMuseumStreetpremisesin1979.Thelocationislessthanideal, beingwell outofPerth centre.Duemainly to thededicationofMargaretBrownandher smallbandof helperswe reaped a small nett profitmonthly,which enabled the continued flowofmoneytowardsbuildingcosts.Weboughtwindows,doors,lintelsandwashbasinssecond-hand.Thewallsroseandreachedwallplateheight-andtherewestopped.Thenextstagewastheroofanditstimbers.Oneofourmembers(Dr.TedLee)queriedhowmuchwasneededfortheroof.Hewastold"about$5,000".Hehandedoverachequeforthatamount.Incredible!Weshoppedaroundandgot l7.5%off the timberand25%off thecorrugated roofing iron.Themainroofingtrusseswereabout15metres(45feet)wideandwere13innumber.Theyhadtoberaisedbycranewhichcostabout$45perhoursowegotagoodteamof12membersondeckandfixedthesetrussesinpositionin4.5hours!Thenbeganthelong,hardlabourofroofing-weekendafterweekend.TheelectricalwiringwasamatterofconcernbuttheproblemwassolvedwhenafriendofLesChidgey-oneTrevorBarnes,whoisanelectrician-offeredtodothejobfornothingifwesuppliedthematerials.Anotherhurdlecleared!Stagebystageweforgedon.Thereare2,500screwsinthatroof.Theverandawascompleted.Somehoworother themoneywas found for theceilingsandwallplasteringand thedrainageandplumbing.Againwerememberthatmanymembersgavegenerouslyoftheirtimeduringtheconstructionofourstudycentreandthiswasgreatlyappreciated.

The Theosophical Link 13 Easter1982wasatriumphantoccasion-ourfirstweekendeventinourstudycentre!Alotofdetailedworkremainedtobedone-floorcovering,painting,kitchenfittingsetc.butsteadilythesethingsweredone. In the meantime John and Kaye Judson expressed their willingness to build a house on thepropertyand,afterLodgeapprovalwassecured,thebuilderstartedtheirhouse inApril1982.Onthe12thJune1982JohnandKayeweremarriedatthestudycentreand120guestswishedthemwell. InJulytheirhousewascompletedandtheymovedin.TheHarris’swerenolongeralone!Atthetimeofwriting-February1984-thecentreisagoingconcern.True,muchremainstobedone.Itis planned that the fourth chalet will have its self-contained toilet and shower - perhaps a littlekitchenette.Ithaslongbeenrealisedthatvisitingspeakers,V.I.P.sandabovealltheelderlyandinfirmneeded such a facility. Just when this will be started we do not know. Then, we hope, one day, toprovideameditationsanctuary.But,PerthLodgeisatthemomentintheturmoiloflettingtendersforitsnewbuildingandwehavetoturnourenergiesinthatdirection.Wenowhavea facilityworthsome$200,000which isappreciatedbyotherorganisationswhorent itfromusandprovidewelcomefinancialaidtomeetouroverheads.Howdoweseethefuture?Therearemanypossibilities,ofcourse,andmanypointsofview.Thebeautyofitallisthatthereisroomformanyuses. Scope for all! It is up to individualmembers,working through the programming committee, tocomeupwiththeirownideas.Sofar,PerthLodgehaspresentedsome20weekendeventsandtherehavebeenmanysmallersocialoccasionssuchaslunches,dinners,carrallies,treeplantingsessionsetc.Manyprogramsforlocalpeoplehavealsobeenorganised,amountingtoperhaps50or60evenings.Excitingproposalsarebeingdiscussed.AttheAdelaideConventiontheAustralianCouncilendorsedtheconceptofestablishinganAustralianequivalentoftheEuropeanSummerSchools,toserviceAustralasiaandSouthWestAsiaatMt.Helena.Wearegeographicallywell locatedforsuchaventure.DuringJoyMills’visitthiswasdiscussedandsheisalsokeentoexplorethepossibilityofinternationalco-operation

betweenKrotona,U.S.A.perhapstheBritishSectionsand ourselves. A more professional approach totheosophical education is needed and excitingproposals are being examined. We shall mostcertainlyfigureinthis.Oneoftheurgentneedsweseeistoencourageandtrainmore theosophical seminar leaders forworkatMt.Helena.Uptonowwehavehad,ofnecessity,toplacetheemphasisonphysicalthings-worktobringtheCentreintobeing.Nowwecanshifttheemphasistoworkwith thepublic. Itdoesnotmatterwhetheryou are recently joined member or a long-standingone-theMt.HelenaCentreofTheosophyisyoursto

useandenjoy.Youcanstayatit,ifyouwishtogointoretreatforsolitude;youcanproposeandmounteventsofyourown, initiative.
