We pray that everyone who comes to worship at Christ Church leaves with a clear understanding of the Gospel. Everything that takes place in our worship is there to offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who wish to receive it.

What is this Gospel? It can be summarized in four elements:

CREATION – We have been created in God’s image, as the crown of His Creation and the delight of his heart.

SIN – Due to our selfishness, we rebelled against God and sought to live life according to our own wants and desires.

JUDGMENT – Our rebellion distorted the divine image within us beyond recognition and has alienated us from our Creator, resulting in great pain and confusion and bringing us under His righteous judgment.

REDEMPTION – God, in His mercy, provided a remedy: Jesus Christ, who died in our place on the cross, taking the just punishment that was rightly ours, and rising bodily from the grave. Through repentance from sin and faith in Christ’s act of love and mercy on our behalf, God gives us forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit, who transforms our lives and offers us new life, beginning in this world and carrying us into the glory of the world to come.

Prelude Procession In Parish Songbook

“Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” Hyfrydol

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit.

The Celebrant says the Collect. The People respond Amen.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH

In hearing Messiah, it is important to know that George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a German composer practicing his craft in England. He composed both sacred and secular music including vocal and instrumental chamber music, instrumental solos, vocal solos, oratorio, organ repertoire, and opera. And it is this last subject, opera, where we find an interesting connection to his composition Messiah.

By the mid-eighteenth century, unlike the rest of Europe, the English had become tired with opera. And so, Handel innovated by composing dramatic oratorios of a scale never seen or heard before. Elijah, Israel in Egypt, Saul, Judas Maccebaeus, and Messiah are among his most prominent. Like opera, these oratorios have scenes with soloists, choruses, and orchestral accompaniment—but unlike opera, they are sacred works. Given this history, what you will hear today is Christian oratorio, composed in England by a German composer in the German compositional style of the time (Baroque), telling the story of the coming of the Messiah.

The story is divided into five distinct scenes. At the start of each scene, soloists tell the Biblical story and then the chorus responds to what has been told. Here is a brief overview of the scenes as they unfold.

Part One: Prophecy and Promise of the Redeeming Messiah

1. Sinfony “Overture” Scene One: God’s Comforting Promise

2. Comfort Ye my people Tenor solo: John Marshall 3. Ev’ry valley shall be exalted Tenor solo: John Marshall 4. And the Glory of the Lord Chorus

Scene One: An overture opens the oratorio. It conveys a mood without hope and darkness from which light is later to shine forth. The Overture’s severe simplicity and austere minor key makes the opening Aria “Comfort Ye” seem warm and cheery by contrast. The three vocal pieces which follow the Overture are linked by music as well as by consecutive Biblical texts. Together they constitute a section that prophesies the Messiah about which the oratorio is concerned. Scene One ends with the chorus singing, “And the Glory of the Lord shall be revealed.” It is important here to remember the words which the chorus sings are spoken by “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness” of which the tenor sang in “Comfort Ye.”

The time before worship is a time to be quiet before the Lord, to prepare your heart and mind for worship through prayer, to review the worship bulletin, to prepare your prayer book and hymnals, or to read through the music notes. As we move into the musical prelude think of it as prayer, as a means of drawing you from the street and into God’s Holy Temple. Let us then, in silence, prepare ourselves to worship the Living God. Latecomers are encouraged to enter at times when the congregation is standing, as indicated by **.

Scene Two: The Purifying Messiah is Prophesied

5. Thus saith the Lord Bass solo: Marc Robertson 6. But who may abide the day of his coming? Alto solo: Jillian Pashke 7. And He shall purify Chorus

Scene Two: The text, from Haggai and Malachi, tells the Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah who “shall suddenly come to His temple.” And though God will “shake the heavens and the earth,” he shall do so to usher in the appearance of “the desire of all nations”—the Messiah. Handel’s intention in this scene is to express God’s majesty and compassion, not his anger. The three solos and then the chorus which follows in Scene Two are connected together in the same manner the solos and chorus were connected in Scene One. This scene concludes with a section in which the purifying “refiners fire” seems to flicker and burn away human impurities, as the spirit of the Old Testament Messiah that is referred to here would do.

Scene Three: God’s Glory Comes Through a Virgin

8. Behold, a virgin shall conceive Alto solo: Jillian Pashke 9. O thou that tellest good tidings Alto solo: Jillian Pashke and Chorus

Scene Four: From Darkness Comes the Light of the World

10. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth Bass solo: Marc Robertson 11. The people that walked in darkness Bass solo: Marc Robertson 12. For unto us a child is born Chorus

Scene Five: The Christmas Story

13. Pifa “Pastoral Symphony” 14a. There were shepherds abiding in the field Soprano Recitative: Tina Zenker Williams 14b. And lo, the angel of the Lord Soprano Recitative: Tina Zenker Williams 15. And the angel said unto them Soprano Recitative: Tina Zenker Williams 16. And suddenly there was with the angel Soprano Recitative: Tina Zenker Williams 17. Glory to God Chorus 18. Hallelujah Chorus (Please stand)

Scenes Three though Five: These scenes continue in like-manner to the first two scenes; soloists tell the story followed by the chorus responding. These remaining scenes: (1) tell of the prophesies to King Ahaz that a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Immanuel; (2) move us into the New Testament where the angel of the Lord appears to Joseph and tells him that this prophecy will be fulfilled through Mary; (3) set the forces of darkness and light dramatically in opposition as Scene Four brings Part One of the oratorio to its climax with the chorus singing “For unto us a child is born”; and, (4) tell the well-known Christmas story in the concluding scene of Part One. The exclamation mark is the Hallelujah.

The Nicene Creed Standing

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

**The Peace Standing Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with your spirit. Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the Name of the Lord.

Offertory Hymn Hymnal #690 “Guide Me, O thou great Jehovah” Cwm Rhondda

Celebrant All things come of thee, O Lord. 1 Chronicles 29:14 People And of thine own have we given thee.

THE LITURGY OF THE TABLE

The Celebrant addresses the congregation: If you truly and sincerely repent of your sins, are reconciled and at peace with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God and walking from this day forward in his holy ways; draw near with faith, take this holy Sacrament to strengthen and comfort you, and make your humble confession to Almighty God.

The Confession of Sin (kneeling) Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we acknowledge and confess our many sins, which we have committed from time to time by thought, word and deed against your divine Majesty, provoking most justly your righteous anger against us. We earnestly repent, and are deeply sorry for all our wrongdoings. The memory of them grieves us and the burden of them is too great for us to bear. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past and grant from this time forward we may serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant then declares God’s forgiveness: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with sincere repentance and true faith turn to him: Have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Hear the words of assurance addressed by our Lord Jesus Christ to those who truly turn to him:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Hear also what St. Paul said: The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1Timothy 1:15)

And hear what St. John said: If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1)

The Great Thanksgiving Standing Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. Celebrant We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continues Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, Creator and Preserver of all things, it is good and right at all times, and in all places, to give you thanks and praise…

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim and magnify your glorious Name, forever praising you and saying:

The Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy) People and Celebrant sing together

The Prayer of Humble Access (kneeling, in unison)

We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Celebrant continues, Almighty God, our heavenly Father you, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Savior Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption: who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full satisfaction, perfect self-offering and sufficient sacrifice, for the sins of the whole world; and instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death, until he comes again.

Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed took Bread; and, when he had given you thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying: “Take, eat: this is my Body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper, he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink this, all of you, for this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” The People respond AMEN.

Agnus Dei (All sing together, kneeling)

The Celebrant says the following Invitation The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All believing Christians baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, are invited to receive the sacrament. To do so, kneel at the communion rail, place your right hand on your left and lift your hands, palms up, towards the Celebrant as he approaches with the bread. Lightly grasp the base of the chalice and help guide it to your lips. Should you prefer not to sip from the chalice, allow the Bread to remain in your palm so that the chalice bearer may dip it in the wine and place it in your mouth. If you are not baptized, or if you prefer not to receive the Sacrament, fold your arms for a Blessing instead. If you are physically unable to come forward but do wish to receive communion, inform an usher so that the sacrament may be brought to you.

Intercessors are available in the narthex for those seeking prayer.

And we humbly ask you, heavenly Father, so to assist us with your grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as you have prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honor and glory, forever and ever.
