In January, the Three Hierarchs are celebrated each individually (Saint Basil, January 1; Saint Gregory

the Theologian, January 25; and Saint John Chrysostom; January 27) and again jointly on January 30!

This is a reminder that all are given special gifts, no person is more special than the other, we are all

in one communion! These great teachers are wonderful fountains of the wisdom that comes from God,

and their wisdom can strengthen us as we begin another year.

And these teachers, I am sure, pray for us that we remember that all our wisdom, all our strength,

and all our accomplishments are because of the gifts given to us by God.

As we begin another year, we may feel some anxiety. We feel effects of time. There are deadlines to

make and goals to reach, and sometimes we feel the decrease in our youth and energy. But God came and

sanctified time so that we would not be stuck saying that everything just slips away from us. He gave us

the ability to be be partakers of eternal life through faith and love. Saint Gregory the Theologian said these

words, in which we can find encouragement as time progresses:

God always was, and always is, and always will be. Or rather, God always Is. For Was and Will be

are fragments of our time, and of changeable nature, but He is Eternal Being. And this is the Name

that He gives to Himself when giving the Oracle to Moses in the Mount. For in Himself He sums up

and contains all Being, having neither beginning in the past nor end in the future; like some great

Sea of Being, limitless and unbounded, transcending all conception of time and nature, only

adumbrated by the mind, and that very dimly and scantily.

So this most famous mind of the Church is not afraid to articulate that our mind has its limits. Time

has its limits. All things that are measurable have limits. As we begin to measure one more year, we can

find joy, hope, and growth, knowing that we have the gift of communion to the immeasurable, eternal love

of God.

Stewardship

‘Give not out of your abundance, but out of your poverty.’ Mark 12:41-44

Miracle of Sharing ‘...and all these things shall be added unto you.’ Matthew 6:33

Stewardship 2014

I Give Up! By Harry Yianitsas, Stewardship Chairman

Quick, what do these words say to you? Do they sound like a phrase of resignation? Do they sound like

something you hear when one is worn out and tired? (yes, we all are from time to time) What meaning do these

words carry?

Let’s break down the individual meanings of these simple words:

I-Meaning me personally.

Give- To hand over. “Give me the truth.”

To cause to have. “Did you give me your cold?”,

To relinquish. “I give you all the power.”

To offer. “Can I give you some help?”

Up- Used up. “Time is up”

Moving to a higher position . “Let’s go up to the top” “ The Cowboys are up by 10 points”

Getting higher and more vigorous. “The stock market is up today”

So, depending how we “see” these words, we can have different meanings for this phrase.

What we believe can affect how we interpret them.

The pessimist may say I give up means “there’s just no use in trying anymore, it will never succeed” He feels

used up. Expended. Given out. Out of options.

But, the optimist may see these words in an entirely different light (the light of Christ?). I give up is not a

negative, but a positive! How? Because with his faith in God, the optimist sees these words to mean “I relinquish

myself to a higher position” Through his faith, he has realized that his abilities are limited, and only God can help

him deal with those limitations. No wonder he’s an optimist! God is with him helping him achieve his goals!

Which brings us to our attitude about our stewardship. We have set the goal of being a 100% stewardship

supported parish by our 2015 100th anniversary. Many of us have seen the goal as something we may never

achieve, or something to let others achieve for them. But many of us have seen the need and answered the call to

increase their giving. Like the optimist, they know that it is God who will help them in their giving. They have

realized first-hand how giving of themselves feels great!

As we end this year, and begin another I would challenge each of us to not just “give up” and resign, but to

truly “GIVE UP” and increase their personal contribution of the TIME God gives us, the TALENT God gives us,

and the TREASURE he gives us. With His help we will truly achieve our goal and make our community a thriving

center for the faithful.

CATECHETICAL CORNER

After the Feasts of St. Basil, Theophany and St. John the Baptist, January usually

provides a bit of respite from the hustle and bustle of the “holy day” season. This

year will be a very busy January as will most of 2015! Beginning in January, Holy

Trinity is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Church!!

On January 1, the Feast of the St. Basil the Great, all those who celebrate their nameday will host a

wonderful celebration after Divine Liturgy. It is a wonderful beginning of the New Year to attend Divine

Liturgy with your family.

The first “kickoff event” will be on January 11 when St. Barbara’s Philoptochos will sponsor the annual

Vasilipita Celebration to raise funds for the Academy of St. Basil Children’s Home in Garrison, New York. What is

exciting is that the guests for the celebration will be Fr. Costas Sitaras, Director, and a student from St.

Basil’s Academy! J

On Thursday, January 15, the second anniversary event will be the CENTENNIAL KICKOFF

CONCERT FEATURING MARIO FRANGOULIS AT THE WINSPEAR OPERA HOUSE, 8:00PM.

The Metropolis Basketball Tournament will take place the weekend of January 17-18. Our youth have

been putting in many hours at practice!

On the 24th, our Greek School students will remind us of the importance of the Three Hierarchs who

dealt extensively with the education and up-bringing of children. The Coffee Hour and a bake sale will

follow after the presentation in Church.

Wow!! Four of these major events will focus on family and children!! What a blessing!!
