AUGUST 23 2016
The meeting was called to order by Dean Sword, Vice-President.
All visitors and new members were welcomed. Announcements were made for upcoming demonstrations.
The member show reception was announced for Thursday, Sept. 15th at 5:30pm. at the d’Art center. This is also when the awards will be announced.
The evenings’ demonstrator was Amos Peterson. He picked up where Dion Fralick stopped at the last meetings’ demo on platter turning. Dion showed how to turn the platter and tonight, Amos showed how to finish by texturing, embellishing and the type of finishes he uses.
Amos even asked Ray Kallman to show how he would use the texturing tool.
Thanks Amos for a very informative and fun demo.
SHOW and TELL: Jerry Whitehurst, Jay Hartley, Kenn Young, Sam Warren, Mike Dennis, Chuck Mosser, Jesse Forbus, Don Arseneau, Dave McIntire, Dustin Horton and Amos Peterson.
Lastly door prize winners were announced
The meeting was closed until September 27, 2016.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,Connie Shiera, Secretary
AUGUST 2016
Once again Bob was off enjoying his recent retirement and so your vp had the pleasure of presiding.
If you were not there you missed a very entertaining and informative presentation by Amos Peterson. Amos gave the second half of the platter demo-this one about the
decoration after the platter is turned. Audra Bullock reported on a very successful workshop several of our members conducted for local youth that are in the care of local social services. Thanks to all who donated their time for what turned out to be a very worthwhile community service. I look forward to seeing you on September 23.

makes a stronger filler that mixing it with other things. I looked up YouTube videos and there are several showing it… (If baking powder came in colors, that would be neat.)

Tuning andAligning Your LatheFive easy checkpoints to get your turning in lineO
Oval pens driving you nuts? Can’t align two halves of a segmented bowl for glue-up?Join the crowd. If your lathe—or your turning work—suffers from poor alignment, call a time-out and review these five alignment checkpoints.
1. Tailstock does not alignwith the headstock
To check the alignment of yourheadstock and tailstock, insert alive center into the tailstock and aspur drive into the headstock. Makesure that the points are not dulledor bent in either the spur or the livecenter—this will mislead you inyour measurement.
Bring up the tailstock to within1/4" to 1/2" from the spur center, then tighten down the tailstock andquill. Now, observe the alignmentof the two points. If the points aremisaligned, you can compensate byplacing a shim under the appropriatecorner(s) of the tailstock to adjust
the alignment. Often a sheet or twoof paper will be adequate to shimthe tailstock.
For more exaggerated errors, contact the lathe manufacturer forrepair or replacement of the tailstockor tailstock quill. An extremecase may require reboring of theMorse taper on the tailstock quill.
If the lathe headstock is boltedto the frame or ways as with theJet mini-lathe and Delta Midi, youcan realign it with the additionof a permanent shim under theappropriate corner. On other lathessuch as the Oneway, for example, you can align the headstock byadjusting the jack screws provided
for that purpose.
If you own a Nova 3000/DVR,you can reposition the lathe waysthemselves, as they are screwedto the headstock unit. Be sure tofollow the instructions in yourowner’s manual for all adjustmentsnoted above.
On lathes with a rotating headstock, the click stop positioning may not be accurate enough to return to perfect alignment. A double-ended Morse taper will aid in regularly realigning the headstock each time it is moved.
12
2. Live center does not run trueInexpensive live centers, centers
with worn out bearings, or poorlydesigned live centers like theexamples shown cause problems. Ifthe live center was inexpensive, justdiscard it and upgrade.
One of the causes of a live centerbecoming out of true is excessivewear of the bearings due to operatingthe lathe with a headstock/tailstockmisalignment. Angular pressure onthe live center will rapidly increasethe radial runout to an unacceptablepoint. (Oneway advertises that theradial runout of its live center systemis less than .001 inches.)
If you have a reliable live centerthat’s repairable, consider replacingthe bearings. For a minimal fee, youcan return many live centers forbearing replacement.
3. Too much pressure applied to the mandrel in penturning
If your pen barrels are oval andyou’ve checked the first twosolutions, applying too muchpressure to the tailstock whentightening on the mandrel may bethe culprit. The amount of pressureapplied should be just enough tostabilize the mandrel shaft andminimize vibration from the turning activity. Too much pressure bends the shaft as shown.
A crooked live center point willalso cause the mandrel to operateeccentrically and will enlarge anddistort the alignment dimple in thetailstock end of the mandrel shaft. The better designed mandrels allowthe user to replace the shaft whenit becomes bent or the dimple hasexcessive wear.
4. Poor centering with vacuum chucks If you align a bowl or vessel in your vacuum chuck and it slips or won’t hold the desired alignment, the cause may be related to the material used to seal the vessel to the chuck. Foam rubber and other soft, flexible seals may vary in density throughout the material, thus not compressing equally everywhere, causing the vessel to be forced out of alignment.
Vacuum chuck design and the shape of the vessel also tend to exaggerate this problem. A round vessel held against a rounded chuck surface may exhibit this problem more readily. To improve centering, try each of these solutions: Replace the material, readjust the material, or buy thicker (or thinner) stock.
Silicon rubber works well but is difficult to attach to the chuck because there’s no known effective adhesive for this material. On a finished edge bowl, consider using a flat plate as a vacuum chuck, thus spreading out the hold over a large area and minimizing the problem.
Tips to improveyour accuracy
Always clean the female Morse tapers before inserting
Remove all defects or burrs from the surface of male Morse tapers.
Store and protect spur drives and live centers from scratches and dings. Find place near your lathe where these valuable attachments won’t get beat about by lathe tools, hammers, and accessories.
13
5. Hole-drilling errors Improperly mounting a Jacobs chuck on a Morse taper may cause centering problems when drilling holes in the end of a project. To avoid this problem, be sure that you properly seat the Morse taperin your tailstock, then run the quill out far enough that the drill chuck completely seats—no further. Bring the tailstock up into close proximity of the work and lock down the tailstock before drilling.
Other drilling issues may not be related to the alignment but be caused by the drill wandering from hard, winter-growth grain and into softer summer growth. Solve thisissue by creating a small pilot hole for the drill point. Brad-point or Forstner bits also reduce this drifting problem. Always be sure that the bit you select is sharp.

Trent Bosch is one of the SIX featured demonstrators at the Virginia Symposium.
Trent has assisted David Ellsworth at Arrowmont, birthed and breathed life into his own prospering company, (the Rescued Wood Bowl Company) and developed, organized and taught a woodworking program for men in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease (the Eagles Club Respite Program). He has been a demonstrator at many AAW Symposiums over the years.
Trent's philosophy is “…as an artist, to express my feelings about nature, my family and natural processes. I work in series or bodies of work, which allows me to explore these issues in depth. Throughout the creative process I am continually reminded that I have not and will not ever be content. I will continue to create and strive for that body of work that has yet to be conceived.”
Come to the Symposium and see at least one of his four demonstrations. 17
