Earthquake generated Tsunami waves travelled at 700-800 kmph. Striking waves were upto 10 meters high.

Phenomenon very rare in this region.

RESPONSE- 26th Dec 2004Affected States/ UTs contacted and ground situation ascertained. A&N Islands were contacted through IDS OPS room.Government initiates relief operations through Armed Forces in States & UTs and also sends support to Sri Lanka. Subsequently to Maldives and Indonesia too.Safety and Security of Kalapakkam Atomic Power Plant ensured. Plant now operational400 CPMFs personnel made immediately available to Tamil Nadu for Search , Rescue & Evacuation. 2 MFR teams of MHA directed to leave for A&N Islands.Relief Hubs in various parts of the country identified and designated

28,734 persons were rescued- 9950 in Kerala, 9284 in A & N Islands, and 9500 in TN including 1000 persons stranded at Vivekanand Memorial.

6.45 lakhs persons – Main Land (6.30 lakhs) and A&N Island (0.15 lakhs) moved to safer places

Civil Aviation operated 64 special flights between 27th Dec 2004 - 1 Jan 2005 to evacuate 6,318 stranded people including tourists from A&N Islands.

In all 881 relief camps were opened and a total of 6,04,335 housed in the camps.

Camps functioning at present: 614 with 3,84,658 persons housed in the camps

A total of 10817 (5 men tents) and 1918 (10 men tents) despatched to the affected areas- mostly to A & N Islands

Disposal of Dead Bodies

All dead bodies disposed off, most of them by 30 December 2004

Special Teams (total approx. 1000) mobilized by State administration from other districts for the district of Nagapattinam

BSF cremation parties dispatched and deployed in the Nicobar Group of Islands.

Standard Procedures as prescribed by Ministry of Health and WHO followed.

Defence Forces established eighteen medical camps with more than 20 Medical Teams in the affected areas

A 120 bed hospital established on board INS MAGAR. All ships of Navy/ Coast Guard deployed for search & rescue providing medical facilities.

166 Doctors including Specialists deployed by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 62 in A&N Islands

Emergency Medicines worth Rs. 2 Croredespatched to A&N islands, Kerala and Pondicherry. Rs 1 Crore given to Tamil Nadu

AP & Kerala suffer less damage and restore power supply. Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry make efforts for power normalcy. 715 Diesel Gen sets sent to A&N Islands. Engineering teams deputed and other large size generator sets arranged

Water Supply in A & N Islands - restored gradually to the extent of 80% in Port Blair. Water points in other Islands located, halogen tablets sent, desalination plants and pumps dispatched.

38 telephone exchanges in Andaman group now functional. Inmarsat and VSAT telephones sent for urgent communication. 3 telephone exchanges in Nicobar Group made operational. Communication through Satellite Phones established in affected areas.

Jetties on Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Out of 49 Jetties, 29 are functional. Pontoon dispatched to Great Nicobar so that ship can berth

37 fishing harbors/ fish landing centres in TN, Kerala and Pondicherry damaged. Team from Central Institute of Coastal Engineering deputed to assess damage.

Teams despatched to States for assessing damage to roads and bridges. Army sets up Bailey bridge at Karaikal and ferry in Alleppy district. Ten Bailey bridges sent to A&N Islands.

Six tribes (Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, Sentinelese, Shompens and Nicobaris ) in A & N Islands

All reported safe except Nicobaris 1151 of whom are reported to have lost their lives and 5580 reported missing

PM sanctions funds from National Calamity Contingency Fund totaling Rs. 450 cr for States. UTs directly supported by Govt. of India ( Rs. 50 cr for Pondicherry and Rs. 100 crfor A & N Islands).

PM announces ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to next of kin of deceased from Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

Central teams visit and assess damage in affected States.

Steps initiated for providing nets, boats and financial support to fishermen.

Task force formed for putting in place permanent housing for those affected

A & N Administration approaches Supreme Court and obtains orders to utilise timber, other forest produce and sand for reconstruction purposes.

MONITORING AND COORDINATION

Crisis Management Group under Cabinet Secretary activated at 1040 hrs on 26th December 2004. Meets at 1300 hrs. Thereafter daily meetings.

Cabinet meets on 27th Dec at 1700hrs. – reviews situation and constitutes GoM under Prime Minister

GoM meets on 28th and regularly thereafter.

Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Home Minister and other Union Ministers visit affected areas.
