The Tulsa Tracker Newsletter of the Tulsa Chapter, American Guild of Organists February, 2019 From the Dean… Dear friends, I really enjoyed our brunch at Ol Vine earlier in January. During the past two years the brunch has been a good time to catch up with many of you. Thanks to Terry Cast for handling the reservations. I am looking forward to our next event, a recital by three OU students on February 1. This is a fine opportunity to support our colleagues in Norman. The more time I spend with our friends at OU, the more I believe our profession will have a brighter future! This February will be a special month for me, as the new Schoenstein organ at St John’s Episcopal Church will be the featured instrument in the latest issue of The Diapason. My colleague Adam Pajan and I both wrote articles that tell the story of the instrument from the design phase and installation to the beauty it now brings to worship. I hope you will look at the February edition of The Diapason and plan to join me for the dedication weekend of February 23/24 and the recital by Paul Jacobs on March 3. And on top of that, it will be great to host our chapter for the recital by Martin Bambauer on the 25th. Joseph Joseph Arndt, Dean From the Sub-Dean… Dear friends and colleagues, We're in for a treat this Friday, as three American Organ Institute students share their talent with us. Reading through their biographical information, I'm amazed by their diverse interests and impressive accomplishments at such a young age. I can't wait to hear them play! I am grateful to Lyndon Meyer for his good work in creating the chapter's new website. Please check it out at www.tulsaago.org and share your thoughts with us. It is an appealing and informative introduction to our organization, and you can help us make it even better by sharing your ideas. Lyndon is looking for stoplists, photos, etc., of local organs. We have a variety of local instruments and it is well worth showcasing them, especially as they sometimes fly under the radar. How many times have you met someone who is simply unaware of all the diverse organs and the wonderful people who make them sing? It happens to me pretty frequently. Please send Lyndon anything you may have, but please, only items you personally know to be accurate! Terry Terry Cast, Sub-Dean

From the Dean… Dear friends,

I really enjoyed our brunch at Ol Vine earlier in January.

Joseph Joseph Arndt, Dean

From the Sub-Dean…

Dear friends and colleagues,

We're in for a treat this Friday, as three American Organ Institute students share their talent with us. Reading

through their biographical information, I'm amazed by their diverse interests and impressive accomplishments

at such a young age. I can't wait to hear them play!

I am grateful to Lyndon Meyer for his good work in creating the chapter's new website. Please check it out at

www.tulsaago.org and share your thoughts with us. It is an appealing and informative introduction to our

organization, and you can help us make it even better by sharing your ideas. Lyndon is looking for stoplists,

photos, etc., of local organs. We have a variety of local instruments and it is well worth showcasing them,

especially as they sometimes fly under the radar. How many times have you met someone who is simply

unaware of all the diverse organs and the wonderful people who make them sing? It happens to me pretty

frequently. Please send Lyndon anything you may have, but please,

only items you personally know to be accurate!

Recital by Students at the American Organ Institute

Solena Rizzato, David Anderson, Benjamin Clark

First Presbyterian Church, 709 S Boston Ave, Tulsa

Tulsa Chapter News: Please welcome new member Suzanne Law: she has a BME and MM from the University of Tulsa, has taught at Oral Roberts University and served as organist, pianist and choir director for 10 years at Sapulpa’s First Presbyterian Church. She is available to substitute: telephone contact is 918-224-5491. Welcome to new Chapter Friend Lynda Ramsey: [email protected] or 918-810-8537 Dale LeStourgeon is recovering from knee replacement surgery, and Susan Panciera recently had hand surgery. Prayers for healing for both of these dear friends!

News from the Region: Our friend Madolyn Fallis from San Antonio died on January 20, 2019. Madolyn loved the AGO, she was a constant encourager of young organists, had a smile for everyone she met, AND she made a great margarita! She and her organ-duet partner, Elaine Ehlers, both graduates of the University of Oklahoma with Mildred Andrews, presented programs all over the region and beyond. I will always cherish her positive attitude, her love of life, and her absolute delight in music. - Karen Rich

Madolyn Fallis (1934-2019) was a force of nature. Between her boundless energy and her smile as big as all of Texas, she endeared herself to everyone she met. As many of you know, she was highly revered as AGO Southwest Regional Coucnillor (Region VII in those days). I was honored to be elected to that position when she concluded her terms of service. Short:ly after I took office, she sent me a large cardboard box full of AGO regional documents and information, all nearly filed and labeled. When I commented on how much material there was, she informed me that she had culled it down from six boxes! Not only was she a devoted member of the AGO and a respected church musician, teacher and recitalist, but she was a class act in every sense of the word. Her degrees of professionalism and respect for each individual person set her apart from the norm. With Madolyn, what you saw was what you got. She always had a kind word for everyone, along with pats on the back and positive reinforcement. Like a gentle mother, she shepherded me into the regional councillor position, and was always just an email or phone call away when I needed support and encouragement. With a warm spirit and a kind heart, she kindled a flame in all of us to do our best work. Dear Madolyn, I join many in saluting you and thanking you for the example you set for us, as well as the high standards you achieved. May angels sing you into the arms of God, where you will be welcomed with great joy into the Kingdom of Heaven. You will always be one of the bright Yellow Roses of Texas!

- Michael Bedford

Educating the Church Musician

While many of us enter the field of church music early in life, studying organ performance and choral conducting in college and at conferences and conventions, some come to the field after their formal education has ended or may wish

to develop and improve their skills as they mature. Here are some resources to help with those quests.

We would be remiss not to mention first of all, the website of the American Guild of Organists (agohq.org). In addition to online versions of The American Organist magazine, there is a series of thirty video lessons for the new organist,

information about academic organ study, materials relating to the AGO's professional certification programs, and much more. Have you explored the AGO website recently?

The American Choral Directors Association (acda.org) serves a similar function for choral conductors as the AGO does

for organists. Its website includes repertoire information, links to a discussion forum (choralnet.org), publications of interest to choral conductors, and a mentoring program for members, among other resources.

Our worship covering online resources for church musicians will be coming up in a couple of months. If you have

resources you'd like to share with your colleagues, please let me know about them at [email protected].

For Sale:

35-year-old 2-manual Allen organ with built-in speakers. No pistons, no memory. The pedal is

actually smaller than the standard church organ pedals, but usable (somewhat similar to a

historic organ's pedal). The manuals are in good condition. Overall. it's an old but reliable

instrument. Asking price $300 or best offer. Call 808-285-8861 if interested.

Also for Sale:

Dorothy McFadden’s Steinway piano Dorothy recently died, at 103, and her daughter is offering the piano.

Tulsa Ballet has a few openings for part-time pianists to play for the Center for Dance Education ballet classes. We pay $20 an hour and are looking for pianists with sight-reading skills and some improvisation skills.

No experience is required as we will help them learn how to play for ballet. Contact Joseph McNamara 918-749-6030 or [email protected]

Registration is now open! We hope you will join us in the city of Denver, Colorado for four days of amazing music, artists, organs, cathedrals, and the magnificence of Colorado’s natural beauty.

Colorado is the newest member of the Southwest Region of the American Guild of Organists. As such, it is my pleasure to welcome each of you as well as our friends and friends-to-be from the Southwest region and beyond to this convention. And it is also my privilege to invite you to share with us as we celebrate the gift of organ and choral music in Denver.

Featured artists include John Schwandt opening the convention at Trinity Methodist Church on the 1888 82-rank Roosevelt organ, Yoon-Mi Lim at Ascension Episcopal Church on the beautiful 2009 Murphy Organ, Scott Montgomery on the 70-rank Casavant organ at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Damin Spritzer on the recently TAO-featured massive Kimball organ with the new Spencer

Company Antiphonal Organ at Saint John’s Cathedral, Matthew Dirst on the sublime Martin Ott mechanical action organ at Christ Episcopal Church, and Richard Webb on the 2018 Charles Kegg organ at Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary (also recently featured in the TAO). We will also have with us two young organists, Collin Miller, an AGO Rising Star who performed at the Kansas City National Convention, and Bryan Dunnewald, acclaimed organist and conductor and a Colorado native who has his musical roots in Denver. To close the convention, Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet-Hakim will perform on the 1911 Kimball (1996 Morel) French-inspired organ in the Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

We will be hosting a marvelous hymn festival by Jan Kraybill and Brian Hehn. We are proud to have with us the internationally acclaimed Air & Hammers with Maxine Thévenot and Edmund Connolly, as well as nationally recognized Colorado ensembles such as the Bennie L. Williams Spiritual Singers, St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, and the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado. All will feature prominently during our four days together. Workshops and Worship sessions will be inspiring and unique. The program committee is pleased that every state in the Southwest Region – Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas – will be represented at the convention.

The Southwest Convention is affordable at the early regular registration rate of $350 which includes several meals. The early registration rate for young organists is only $125.

More information and a link to register is available at www.agodenver2019.org.

We look forward to seeing you in Denver July 7-10, 2019!
