The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada and China). It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska in the north and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometres. The USA boarders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. It also has a sea- boarder with Russia.

The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada and China). It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska in the north and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. New York is the largest city in the United States and one of the largest cities in the world.

It is in the southeastern corner of New York state where the Hudson River empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

Manhattan the smallest island in New York is the real centre of the city. When people say «New York City» they usually mean Manhattan.The United Nation has its headquarters in Manhattan.

In 1324 Giovany da Verrazano an Italian sailing in the service of the King of France tried to find a western route of India.

He sailed Ms ship along the eastern coast of North America and on the way found a very pleasant place within two hills between which flowed to the sea a very great river which was very deep in the mouth. He was afraid to go into the river in his ship so he used a small boat to sail into the bay. Verrazano was the first white man who visited the bay New York.

The «Big Apple» as New York City is nicknamed lies an energy that few other cities can equal John F. Kennedy.International Airport is one of the busiest in the world.

New York is a city of sky-scrapers those incredible, high buildings which Americans ivented. Not far from the Empire State Building there is an interesting architectural ensemble – Rockefeller Centre. It was build according to one general plan. Rockfeller Centre consists of sky-scrapers. Rockfeller Centre houses all kind of offices, enterprises, theatres and music halls.

The Empire State building is one of the world’s tallest buildings. It is situated in New York City on the West Side of

Fifth Avenue.

Completed in 1931 in accordance with an original design first suggested by John J. Raskob the Empire State replaced a historic hotel the first Waldorf-Astoria. Its construction set speed records it was

completed in less than two years. The building’s exterior is covered by Indiana limestone and granite and supported by a steel framework. For this frame work 60000 tons of a metal were used, 102 stories above the street it has height 1472 ft.

Only «The New York Times» is read over a large part of the country. Has the

largest circulation of any newspaper in the USA selling more than two million copies each day.

In the 1884 the people of France presented the United States of America with an extraordinary gift as token of friendship.

It was an enormous statue (one of largest ever built) of a woman stepping out of broken chains and holding the torch of freedom in her raised right hand. This figure of «Liberty enlightening the world» has come to be known simply as the Statue of Liberty.

Franklin Roosevelt was born in Hide Park, New York in 1882 at «Springwood» his family’s country estate.

Roosevelt began his political career as a state senator. Then he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy Department where he established a reputation as an energetic, effective administrator and earned considerable respect. In 1920 Roosevelt left the Navy Department to continue his political career in the Democratic Party.

It was named after the first US President George Washington.

Is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA.

There are many libraries, museums, art galleries in the city for example you can see the National Gallery of Art. It was opened in 1941. It is one of the finest picture galleries in America. There are 5 universities in Washington .

It was finally decided to create a new city. Congress passed a bill in 1790 giving permission for a site to be chosen. It was to be somewhere near the Potomac River and not over ten miles square (25.9 square kilometers) .The land was to be called District of Columbia after the Columbus and the city to be build on it was to be named Washington in honor of country’s first president .

G. Washington the 1-st President of the US was born on plantation in Virginia on February 22 1732. At the death of his father George who was then 11 years old was left along with his brother Lawrence and sister in the care of his mother. He went to a little country school where he learned to read and to do sums in arithmetic.

The seat of the Us Congress is situated in Washington D. C. (District of Columbia) and is located on a plateau about 30 meters above the level of the Potomac River. The building got its name from the temple in Rome. The construction of the Capitol in Washington D. C .was begun in 1793.

In 1814 British troops burned the interior of the Capitol but after the war the damage was repaired. Some other changes were made and by 1865 the Capitol received the form we see today .

The official residence of president is at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is Washington D.C. The place covering 7 hectares of land was chosen by president Washington and Pierre L’Enfant, the French engineer who planned the city of Washington. The first cornerstone was laid in 1792 and the first president who moved into the White House in 1800 was John Adams.

This beautiful monument in honor of George Washington is located in the American capital and is visited by more than two millions people every year.

It is a tapering white marble shaft 169 meters high. The work of construction was begun in 1848 and it was opened to the public in 1888. The monument looks like the obelisks of ancient Egypt.

Memorial stones from the 50 States of USA foreign countries, cities and organizations were put into the interior walls. The top platform is reached by a lift and from there the visitor can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of American capital.
