Alhamdulillah, The greatest gratitude is to Almighty Allah SWT, for guidance
and blessing so the writer is finally able to write her final project entitled “The Use of
Buzz Group to Improve the Students’ Speaking Skill of Eleventh Grade Students of
SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus in Academic Year 2013/2014”. Without blessing and
guidance from God, it is impossible for the writer to complete this final project.
In this occasion, the researcher would like to extend sincerest gratitude to the

Key words: Speaking Skill, Buzz Group.
Speaking is the ability to express feelings, ideas, concepts, wishes, opinion
or arguments, and so on thought oral sequences. Speaking is one of the skills which
must be taught in Senior High School. So, the students should speak English fluently.
But, In fact the eleventh grade students of SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus have difficulties
to speak actively in English. They are lack of vocabulary and confidence to speak up.
Based on the conversation with the English teacher, the students’ scores of speaking
skill are still low and still under KKM. To solve this problem, the writer used buzz
group in teaching English to improve their speaking skill.
The objectives of this research are to find out whether buzz group can
improve students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMK NU Ma’arif
Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 and to describe the effectiveness of the buzz
group as a technique to improve students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students
of SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. Buzz group is a small group
of people that is divided from a larger group who are given an assignment to
complete in a short time period. This technique can help the students improve their
speaking skill.
This is a classroom action research. The research is conducted in SMK NU
Ma’arif Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014, especially in the eleventh Grade
Students of XI Tehnik Otomotif. The number of student in this research is 23
students. In this research, the writer used observation sheet to know the teacher’s and
the students’ activity in teaching English by using buzz group. The writer also used
test to know the level of students’ speaking skill.
The result of the test showed that students’ score in cycle I was 69.64. It
means that the test was not successful. In cycle II, the result of the test was 76.73. It
means there was an increase and the score pass the KKM. The result of the students’
achievement test from cycle I to cycle II was increase 7.09. From the observation
sheet, the writer knew that the students enjoyed doing discussion by using Buzz
Group technique and made them easier to produce their idea. They became more
enthusiastic in the class.

So, the writer concludes that buzz group can improve students’ speaking skill
and this technique is effective in teaching speaking. The suggests also suggest that the
implementation of using buzz group as technique in teaching speaking should be
conducted by the teacher in a creative way and always support the students in
teaching learning process. And the students should practice speaking by using buzz
group regularly and continually in order to speak fluently.

Berbicara adalah kemampuan untuk mengekspresikan perasaan, ide, konsep,
harapan, pikiran atau pendapat dan lain sebagainya secara lisan. Berbicara adalah
salah satu keterampilan yang harus diajarkan di SMA. Jadi, siswa harus berbahasa
Inggris dengan lancar. Tapi, kenyataanya siswa kelas XI SMK Ma'arif NU Kudus
memiliki kesulitan untuk berbicara berbahsa inggris secara aktif. Kejadian ini
disebabkan oleh beberapa factor. Mereka rendah kosa kata dan kurangnya
kepercayaan siswa untuk berbicara. Berdasarkan percakapan dengan guru bahasa
Inggris, skor siswa dalam berbicara masih rendah dan masih di bawah KKM. Untuk
mengatasi masalah ini, penulis menggunakan buzz group dalam pengajaran bahasa
inggris untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara mereka.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah buzz group dapat
meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dari kelas XI SMK Ma'arif NU Kudus
pada tahun akademik 2013/2014 dan untuk menggambarkan efektivitas buzz group
sebagai teknik untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas XI SMK
Ma'arif NU Kudus pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Kelompok Buzz adalah sekelompok
kecil yang terbagi dari kelompok besar yang diberi tugas untuk menyelesaikan tugas
dalam jangka waktu yang singkat. Teknik ini dapat membantu siswa meningkatkan
keterampilan berbicara mereka
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dilakukan di
SMK Ma'arif NU Kudus pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014, khususnya di Siswa Kelas XI
Tehnik Otomotif. Jumlah siswa dalam penelitian ini adalah 23 siswa. Dalam
penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan lembar observasi untuk mengetahui aktivitas
guru dan siswa dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan buzz group.
Penulis juga menggunakan tes untuk mengetahui tingkat keterampilan berbicara
siswa.
Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa skor siswa pada siklus I adalah 69,64. Ini
berarti bahwa tes itu tidak berhasil. Pada siklus II, hasil tes adalah 76,73. Ini berarti
terjadi peningkatan dan skor siswa melebihi KKM. Hasil tes siswa dari siklus I ke
siklus II meningkat 7,09. Dari lembar observasi, penulis tahu bahwa siswa menikmati
untuk melakukan diskusi dengan menggunakan teknik Buzz Group dan membuat

mereka lebih mudah untuk menghasilkan ide mereka. Mereka menjadi antusias
didalam kelas.
Jadi, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa buzz group dapat meningkatkan
kemampuan berbicara siswa dan effektif untuk pembelajaran berbicara. Penulis juga
menyarankan bahwa penerapan penggunaan buzz group sebagai tehnik pembelejaran
berbicara harus dilakukan oleh guru secara kreatif dan selalu mendukung siswa dalam
proses pembelaran. Dan siswa juga harus blatihan berbicara secara teratur dan terus
menerus untuk berbicara dengan lancar.
