Valentine’s day is just around the corner and it’s got most of us wondering just what we’re going

to do this year for our special someone. Flowers and chocolates are great, but they’re a little predictable. Try doing something a little different and give a gift that’s homemade.

Melting Heart Slime Recipe

Valentine’s Day should be fun for every-one. What kid wouldn’t love to get a heart container of slime, right?

2 Cups of red glitter glue (you can also use clear glue and add glitter)

1 & 1/2 cups very warm water

Red glitter if extra sparkle is desired (we used extra to get super sparkly slime)

Optional addition- 3-5 drops of rose oil, chocolate essential oil, chocolate extract, or another favorite valentines scent

Combine the above ingredients in a bowl and mix well

In a Separate Bowl Combine

3/4 tsp borax

1 & 1/3 cups very warm water

Once the ingredients of both bowls are mixed combine them and mix well. As you mix the ingredients the slime will form. There will be left over water in the bowl, which can be discarded. If the slime is at all runny or overly sticky simply dissolve a tiny amount of borax in a tea-spoon of water and mix it into the slime. This always does the trick. Try scenting your melting heart slime with rose oil, but you could scent your slime with another favorite scent or leave it unscented.

Seed-Starter Valentine

Propagating seeds is a little like nurturing relationships: The more attention and care they get, the more likely they are to flourish and thrive.

Materials:

Flower seeds

White coin envelopes

Eraser stamp or a rubber stamp

Steps:

Put seeds in plain white coin envelopes available at stationery stores.

Label with an eraser stamp or a rubber stamp, or make a heart with thumbprints.

Put growing instructions on back, noting when seedlings need to be transplanted.

“52 Reasons I Love You” Cards

Find some playing cards! These fabulous cards from Ellusionist shown here are great as they have a pre-aged Vintage look. Scuff them up with some sandpaper to give them a used feel as well as a used look.

Create a template with one of the spare cards (for example one of the Jokers) Punch two holes in each of the cards using the template as a guide.

Create your ‘reasons’ labels to attach to the cards - detailed information at ww-w.52reasonsIloveyou.com. Use another Joker card to create the front cover.

Using double-sided tape and/or glue - attach the inserts to the cards. Using glue will take longer to dry and will stiffen the cards up adding more dimension.

Create all 52 of your reasons cards and let the glue dry. Thread onto book rings.

Now you have a unique, one of a kind gift telling someone 52 reason why you love them.

Awaken Your PassionWith Cranio Sacral Therapy and The Raindrop Technique

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day unleashes the passion. I am not just talking about passion in

the physical sense. Healthy people are passionate about life and achieving goals. Are you feeling the passion for how you spend your time? Do you feel invigorated and excited about the day ahead? If your answer is no, it is time to call me. If you are like most people, you are probably wondering why those New Year’s resolutions were so easily forgotten by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. All that enthusiasm and gusto about the resolutions feel like a distant memory. And yet…. And yet you are still serious about improving and maintaining your health and wellness. This is where Cranio Sacral Therapy can benefit you. Cranio Sacral Therapy allows your body to release energy cyst that block and obstruct the natural healing of your body. By releasing these blockages, your nerves being to function properly again. This not only decreases or eliminates physical pain, but it also allows restoration of damaged nerves to begin. Cranio Sacral Therapy can also identify and overcome emotional blockages that may or may not be causing physical pain. Since our mind, body, and soul are all interconnected, what impacts one part, impacts the other two. Healing emotionally often goes hand in hand with healing physically, and vice versa. For some people, this healing can be accomplished in very little time. Another popular and very effective tool to assist you in achieving health and wellness in 2016 is the

Raindrop Technique. This relaxing and soothing treatment not only detoxes your nerve endings, it can also clear your head and improve your overall outlook on life. It’s amazing and inspiring to witness the changes that result from taking care of your health! The Raindrop Technique involves massaging nine therapeutic-grade essential oils into your spine as well as the vitaflex points on the bottom of your feet. What does all this “get healthy” talk have to do with Valentine’s Day? Is that what I hear you asking? Healthy people entertain their passions far more often and more … well, passionately… than people who are not healthy. When your body is not well, it uses every available ounce of energy to repair itself. Why not get healthy so that you can use that energy to pursue your passions?  And what better time of the year to do this than Valentine’s Day. This year, make Valentine’s Day more than just a greeting card message. Make February the month you commit to restore and maintain your own personal health and wellness. In order to help you reach your goals, call me today and mention this ad. When you do, I have a special offer designed to help you achieve your goals. This offer is only good during the month of February, so be sure to call today. Let the healing begin so that you have more energy for other things!  You can find more information about Cranio Sacral Therapy, The Raindrop Technique, Essential Oils and myself at www.PermissionCST.com. Or call (559) 400-1352 to set an appointment. You don’t need a prescription drug for everything that ails you. There are plenty of all natural ways to bring your health back to where you want it to be by using things that don’t require a trip to the pharmacy. Let me help you to find the happy, healthy version of you.

Fun Facts1. The popular medieval folk belief that birds choose their mates on February 14 made doves a favorite symbol for Valentine cards. The dove was sacred to Venus and other love deities and was known for choosing a lifelong mate.

2. Valentine’s Day was first introduced to Japan in 1936 and has become widely popular. However, because of a translation error made by a chocolate company, only wom-en buy Valentine chocolates for their spouses, boyfriends, or friends. In fact, it is the only day of the year many single women will reveal their crush on a man by giving him chocolate. The men don’t return the favor until White Day, a type of “answer day” to Valentine’s Day, which is on March 14.

3. Valentine candy “conversation hearts” have a shelf life of five years.

4. Started by a group of feminists, “Quirkyalone Day” is celebrated on February 14 as an alternative to Valentine’s Day. It is geared toward people who “resist the tyranny of coupledom.” Another alternate Valentine’s Day cele-bration is SAD (Single Awareness Day), which reminds people that they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life.

5.During the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia (an ancient precursor to Valentine’s Day), two boys would run through crowds of people swinging strings made from goatskins. If the strings touched a girl, it was divined that she would have healthy children when she grew up. The goatskins were called februa, which means to make clean and from which “February” derives.

6. The symbol of the ribbon, which often adorns mod-ern-day Valentines, is rooted in the Middle Ages. When knights competed in tournaments, their sweethearts often gave them ribbons for good luck.

7. On Valentine’s Day 2010, 39,897 people in Mexico

City broke the record for the world’s largest group kiss.

8. Valentine’s Day may have been named after the priest Valentine of Rome, who refused to follow Claudius II’s ban on Christianity. While he was imprisoned, children would pass him notes through the jail window. Before he was killed on February 14, he wrote one last note to the jailer’s daughter with whom he had fallen in love and signed it “From Your Valentine.

9. The most popular flower on Valentine’s Day is a single red rose surrounded with baby’s breath. The red rose was the flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

10. The saying “wearing your heart on your sleeve” is from the Middle Ages. Boys at this time would draw names of girls to see who would be their “Valentine” and then wear the name pinned on their sleeve for a week.

11. In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

Riddle Me This1. It speaks with a hard tongue, it cannot breathe, for it has no lung. What is it?

Find Love in an Unexpected Place

Valley Animal Center is the area’s larg-est non-profit, no-kill shelter for dogs and cats, as well as a low-cost clinic

and membership-based dog park. We are dedicated to alleviating the pet-overpopula-tion problem through spaying and neutering, adoptions, and education rather than euthana-sia. The Center is located at 3934 N. Hayston Avenue in Fresno, CA and is easily accessible to residents of the entire six-county region it serves. If an animal is not adopted, they live the rest of their lives out at our shelter. Even though these animals have grown near and dear to the staff and volunteers, we still want them to find that loving forever home. Like Dexter, our longest-term canine resident. Read more about this sweet guy and see if you’re the family he is looking for!

How to Help

ADOPT: With so many stray and abandoned animals being put to sleep for lack of space each day, the easiest way to save a life is to adopt an animal from a shelter. Not only are you giving that pet a second chance at a forever home, you are also freeing up space for another animal to be rescued. Our adoption centers are open 7 days a week from 10 AM – 4:30 PM.

DONATE: The Valley Animal Center is a community-supported organization and receives no public funding. Financial support is derived solely through donations from the community, grants, program services, and fundraising efforts. Your gift, of any amount, is greatly appreciated and goes to help the an-imals in our care until they find their forever home. Donations can be made online at www.valleyanimal.org or at the shelter. In-kind do-nations of much needed items such as bleach, dishwashing soap, and canned wet food, are also greatly appreciated.

VOLUNTEER: Dedicate your time and share in our passion for animals by helping us out in a variety of ways such as socializing with the animals, folding laundry, helping clean litter boxes and kennels, assisting at fundraising events, and more! Our next volunteer orienta-tion is Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 5:30 PM at the shelter.

ADVOCATE: Help spread awareness regard-ing the importance of adopting and spaying/neutering your pets. Bring the message of awareness, compassion, and citizenship to your community and advocate for animals that don’t have a voice.

` Meet Dexter! `Dexter is a 7.5-year-old bull terrier mix who has been at our shelter since May 2013. His original owners moved out of their house and abandoned him there. A Good Samaritan took him in and began caring for him before surrendering him to our shelter. Dexter loves tennis balls, playing in the water, and scratches behind his ears. He is a big boy but a lap dog at heart. He is always excited to see his human friends and to play with them. As any volunteer can vouch, Dex loves going for walks and trips to the dog park. He needs to go to a home where he is the only animal and the owner can supervise him when he is outdoors. He has separation anxiety and needs to be kenneled when the owner is gone. He escapes by digging, jumping fences, etc when he is left alone in a yard. Dexter feeds off the confidence of his trainers. If his owner is confident and knows what they are doing, Dexter is VERY well behaved. He has been doing obedience training with our training and enrichment committee every Saturday morning. Because of the volunteers’ ded-ication to Dexter’s obedience training and socialization, he has improved his leash walking skills and is working on positively interacting with other dogs. This May will be his 3 year anniversary here at shelter and, while we all love Dex, 3 years is too long! Dexter deserves to find a family who can shower him with love and attention.

Raspberry MacaronsSweets for your sweet on Valentine’s Day is a

great way to tell that special someone how you feel. But what sort of treat should it

be? Chocolates are tried and true, or even a fruit bouquet if you’re looking for a healthier option. Why not make it a little more unique this year by surprising your sweetheart with something homemade. Try these simple, yet delicious Raspberry Macarons.

Ingredients:

1 cup confectioners’ sugar1 cup almond flour (see Note)3 large egg whites, at room temperature1/2 cup granulated sugar2 tablespoons water2 or 3 drops red food coloring1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400° and position racks in the upper and lower thirds. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large, wide bowl, using a large rubber spatula or a handheld electric mixer, mix the confectioners’ sugar and the almond flour with 1 of the egg whites until evenly moistened.

In a small saucepan, combine the granulated

sugar with the water and bring to a boil; using a moistened pastry brush, wash down any crystals on the side of the pan. Cook over high heat until the syrup reaches 240° on a candy thermometer.

In another large bowl, using clean, dry beaters, beat the remaining 2 egg whites at medium-high speed until soft peaks form. With the mixer at high speed, carefully drizzle the hot sugar syrup over the whites and beat until firm and glossy. Beat in the food coloring until the meringue is bright pink.

Stir one-fourth of the meringue into the almond mixture. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the remaining meringue.

Transfer the meringue to a pastry bag fitted with a plain 1/2-inch tip; pipe onto the prepared baking sheets in 1 1/2-inch mounds, 1 inch apart. Tap the sheets and let dry for 15 minutes.

Transfer the meringues to the oven and immediately turn off the heat. Bake the meringues for 5 minutes.

Turn the oven on to 400° again and bake the meringues for 8 minutes, until they are puffed and the tops are firm and glossy.

Transfer the baking sheets to racks and let cool completely. Peel the meringues off of the parchment paper.

Spoon the jam into a small pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch tip. Alternatively, use a resealable sturdy plastic bag and snip off a corner. Pipe the preserves onto the flat sides of half of the meringues. Top with the remaining meringues and serve.

LOCAL MUSIC

A Musician’s Fantasy

Live in a place where the music is respect-ed, the gigs are plentiful, and on any given day you could find yourself sharing

a stage with some of the best players in the world. For three former Fresnans, that fantasy became a reality when they transplanted them-selves to one of the music capitols of the world, New Orleans. For a pair of Dave’s, Ruffner and Hull, the journey from the Big No to The Big Easy was both circuitous and transformative. Each had a history with the place before set-tling there, and each was looking for new ways to express their musical muse. For Ruffner, it was initially to relieve boredom. After retiring from a 35-year teach-ing career, the former band director at Fresno High School found himself at loose ends and needing a new challenge. He also wanted to play more, so he began drawing on his history to find a solution. “I have played in a band for over 30 years that specializes in New Orleans Jazz (Blue Street Jazz Band), and playing in that band fostered my interest in New Orleans music and the city of New Orleans. I first visited New

Orleans in 1986. Through the years I would visit New Orleans annually and then it became 3 or 4 times a year,” he said. That was enough to set him on his way. Now, four years into his relocation, the highly skilled trombone player is more than happy with the move. “The biggest reason I moved to New Orleans was so I could play my horn full time. There are very few places in the world you can work daily as a musician. Today I play on Bourbon Street seven days a week at various clubs. Sometimes the work can be tedious, but often something wonderful and magical happens where I play.” For the younger Dave, New Orleans offered a chance to settle for a bit and make a living on dry land – sort of. The son of anoth-er retired music educator, Ed Hull, Dave spent 7 years working as a musician on cruise ships. He saw the world - but was looking for a place that didn’t weigh anchor every few days and would still allow him to establish his musical

identity. Having visited NOLA in his youth and remembering it as a cool place for music, he decided to return. “I settled here because it’s rare to find full time work as a musician, but NOLA has A LOT of opportunity for a jazz pianist. It’s also a great place for oddballs to congregate,” he said. “I came to Nola one year ago starting out as a street musician, and picked up gigs literally days after I arrived.” But in addition to playing gigs, how do “The Dave’s” tout their success? As might be expected, their approaches seem appropriate for their ages. The older Dave has taken the more traditional path and produced a pair of CDs. His latest, “Swing NOLA” was a project he had in mind for a long time. “My first mu-sical loves were rock-n-roll and Swing. On this recording I play the music I grew up listening to. I put more time and money on this record-

ing than any other CD I have made.” (It’s available on ITunes) Dave the younger has relied more on technology to reach audiences outside New Orleans, making regular appearances on the Internet by posting videos of his performances on his Facebook page. His latest endeav-or is creating live

streams from a noted French Quarter venue, Buffa’s Restaurant, where he’s appeared with other notable musicians (including a certain Rubboard player from California). “Buffa’s is quickly becoming my favorite hang in NOLA,” he says. Along with a retminder that his next Live Stream is on Feb 6th, three days before Mardi Gras. “Mark it down!” Still wanting to be near the water, Dave Hull now lives on a small sailboat (Pres-

ervation Hull) docked on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain and commutes to his office (a bar) where he works for as much as 10 hours a day at his desk (a piano). Dave Ruffner prefers living on the land and plies his trade for hours at a time in venues all across the city. On life in New Orleans, they each offer similar views. Says Ruffner, “New Orleans is a city rich with history and customs that are unique to anywhere else in the world. You just never know what’s going happen, so New Orleans will always be fresh and interesting.” Adds Hull, “New Orleans has a “thing” about it like no other place I’ve been. It’s spiritual, devilish, and seems to make dreams and fantasies come true for better or worse. I’d try to define it further, but I’m afraid of what I’d find.” Probably a Musicians Fantasy. Bon Ton Roulet!
