The Durango Cruise Submitted by Chris Capshaw

It does a body good to get out of the house and just get away for a weekend. With all we have had to deal with these past few months, the getaway to Durango was sweeter than normal. On June 12th, 25 Corvettes, and 1 chase vehicle filled with 50 Corvette lovers, took off for some good times. Included in those Corvette lovers were Pete Urenda the Rocky Mountain Region (RMR) Executive Director, and his wife Cindy, the RMR Secretary. The cruise made its first stop in Salida for lunch, where the staff of “Wallbangers” treated everybody like royalty. The staff got all fifty of us fed and out the door in an hour, which put us ahead of schedule. After a post-lunch rest stop, it was over Wolf Creek and on to Durango. We only stopped once for a few minutes to allow a cattle drive to cross the highway. When we pulled into the Best Western Durango Inn & Suites, the staff were ready. A pleasant surprise awaited us, when we learned our room rates were reduced, and all were upgraded to suites. The Best Western also had a complimentary wine bar for us. The following day was a free day to get out an explore. Many of the cruisers met up with members of the Four Corners Corvette Club (4CCC), for a special tour of Mesa Verde National Park. A member of 4CCC has been a tour guide at the park for many years and shared his knowledge of the park. More fun came in the evening, when everybody as well as members of 4CCC, enjoyed a Cowboy chuckwagon dinner and show with the Bar-D Wranglers. Sunday eventually came, and it was time to head home. The drive back took the cruisers through some of the most scenic places on our planet along US Highway 550, also known as the “Million Dollar Highway.” A lunch stop was made at the Palisades Restaurant in the town of Gunnison, who provided a special menu and reserved parking. After lunch there was only one more rest stop to make, and then Colorado Springs came into sight. The cruisers waved good-bye to each other as they went their different ways, all while wondering where next year’s cruise will be.

Justin’s Graduation Parade

Something all teenagers look forward to is graduating high school. For some this comes relatively easy, but for others it does not. Justin Marshall went through ordeals his entire life to get to his high school graduation. Justin suffered a severe brain injury when he was 5 years old in a traffic accident. The accident injured every member of his family and took the life of his older brother. A lifetime of surgeries, therapy and rehabilitation brought Justin to graduation day, only to have it cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Justin was going to have his day. Car clubs from across the front range gathered in Colorado Springs on a gorgeous Saturday morning to pay honors to Justin and give him his “Graduation Parade.” It was heart wrenching to hear Justin’s mother talk about that fateful day, and all Justin had to endure during his lifetime. Thirty-two CSCC members in nineteen great looking Corvettes, joined several hundred other cars of all makes and models, and paraded by Justin’s home, where he waved at every one as they passed by. We are sure Justin will remember this day forever, and I feel many of us will as well.

Get to Know Your Fellow Members An Interview with Jerry & Denise Phillips

by Diana Dittman

How long have you been a CSCC member? Since October of 1984. What Corvette(s) do you currently own? 2004 Commemorative Edition Convertible. The first Corvette that Jerry bought was a 1974 coupe. (bought in 1979). Denise and Jerry have also owned a 1965 Convertible, a 1972 Convertible, and a 1986 Convertible Pace Car. Marital Status? Been married for 37 years, coming up on 38 in August. How did you meet? They met while working at the Broadmoor. Denise was in purchasing and Jerry was in engineering. Jerry and Denise both say that Jerry pretty much stalked her. Denise said she would hide out in the warehouse. Finally, after a few happy hour cocktails with fellow co-workers, including Jerry, Denise decided that Jerry was indeed a nice guy after all. (Persistence pays off!!) Their first date was going to a Doobie Brothers concert at Red Rocks. They dated for a year and a half and then tied the knot. Where are you from? Jerry was born and raised in Griffith, Indiana. (near Chicago). At age 16 his family sold everything, and they moved to Florida and stayed for a whopping 5 days. They said it was too hot and didn’t like it. At the time Jerry’s brother was stationed at Ft. Carson. So as a family they moved to Colorado and stayed put. Jerry went to Wasson high school his senior year and graduated from there. Denise grew up in a military family. She was born in Arkansas. She also lived in North Dakota, Germany, and Florida. Her Dad ended his military career in Florida, but they moved to Colorado because they had family that lived here. Employment? After graduating high school Jerry joined the Navy for four years. He was stationed in Alaska for one year. He then spent the rest of his time in Asia on the USS Thomaston, based out of San Diego. After the Navy he went to college at PPCC. He got a job at the Broadmoor, while still attending college. Jerry had a long-time career at the Broadmoor working there for 40 years. He was the mechanical manager and retired in 2017. He then took on a part time job at Johnstone HVAC Supply Company, but he is now fully retired. Denise worked at Sears Catalog for three years after graduating high school. She then got a job at the Broadmoor and was there for 39 years and three months. (but who’s counting!) She retired in September of 2019 as an executive administrative assistant. Kids? They have two daughters. Amy, 32, lives in Colorado Springs and has her dream job as a library assistant at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High. Jennifer

is married and lives in Dupont, Washington with her husband, Caleb. He is in the Army. Jerry and Denise have two grandkids, Conner, 11 and Aubrey, 6 (who Jerry says is going on 36 and aspires to be a model). Pets? A dog named Tucker. Favorite club activity? They enjoy the cruises, rallies, and socializing (eating included!) Hobbies? They love to travel! Jerry’s hobbies include cars and working in the yard. Denise does cross stitch and loves to do all types of crafts. What is the best vacation you ever took? They went with members of their family to Tuscany, Italy where they rented two villas and had a private driver. There were nine of them and they took day trips around Tuscany. It was the trip of a lifetime! What is your dream corvette? Jerry’s is a 1971 convertible big block brands hatch green with saddle interior. (he knows what he wants!) How did your love of Corvettes come about? Jerry said he has loved Corvettes since grade school when he had a Schwinn Stingray bike painted Corvette blue. He remembers in 1965 that a friend’s brother had a 1962 and he really admired it. Denise says her love of Corvettes came about because of her love for Jerry! Anything else you would like to add? They have met some of their best friends in the club. They have both held the office of treasurer and board member. Denise is currently a board member. They are lifetime members almost being in the club for as long as they have been married. Thanks for the interview Jerry & Denise!

VIRTUAL BASH HILITES & MUSEUM RE-OPENS

VIRTUAL MICHELIN BASH HILITES While the Virtual Bash, May 28-29, may not have offered the usual “in person” connections, the enthusiasm and excitement were not stifled. Live seminars were conducted remotely by the presenters from their homes or businesses, while other activities were either live or pre-recorded by Museum staff. Two ribbon cutting ceremonies were conducted by NCM staff, as well as walk-throughs of two galleries, and an introduction of one new exhibit. I particularly enjoyed the following live seminars by notable presenters who answered a variety of questions from eager viewers. Paul Koerner, World Class Corvette Mechanic, reviewed Corvette by generations, providing facts and information on each generation’s successive improvements. Doug Fehan, Director Corvette Racing, gave an overview of Corvette racing. Of importance to those who have purchased or are about to purchase a C8, Doug noted the engines in the two C8R racers in their first 2020 race at Daytona on January 23rd were used for testing, qualifying and racing without being replaced; therefore don’t be afraid of buying a first-year C8! Tho disappointed that Corvette’s 20-year consecutive attendance at Le Mans ended due to the pandemic virus, he agreed with GM’s decision. Kai Spande, Assembly Plant Manager, said a few weeks are needed to bring assembly line levels to 225 Corvettes at one time. All 2020 orders will be completed before 2021 production begins. Convertibles have not been assembled yet but will begin soon to fulfill orders. Plant tours will resume after full production begins, but no date was given. Mobil 1 tech-talk presenters recommended oil changes be based on the Corvette’s oil-life indicator. Oil does not have to be changed before storage but should be changed once/year. Corvettes should be stored with the oil ”hot” to prevent damaging moisture collection; also, a 20-minute start-and-run during storage is discouraged as the oil may retain the moisture. The C8 doesn’t need break-in oil nor an initial 500-mile change because Mobil 1’s 0W40 does not contain silicone. Tadge Juechter, GM Corvette Chief Engineer, and Harlan Charles, Corvette Marketing Manager, presented C8 statistics. About 2700 Corvettes were assembled before the February 3rd shutdown. Torch Red, the most popular color, was followed by white and black. Two new colors were announced, Silver Flare Metallic and Red Mist Tint Coat Metallic. 2021 Corvette base prices will not change from 2020.

NCM RE-OPENED on June 8th, as announced by Dr. Sean Preston, NCM CEO.

Organizing an auto-x is daunting to say the least. Organizing the first auto-x in the region adds a little more stress. Organizing the first auto-x in the region, during a pandemic – wow!

Kudos, admiration, and praise to Vicki, Tom, Larry, and Gwenda for the time, and effort you have put in for the Cone Zone. THANK YOU.

On a personal note, my mom (92) is not getting around too well. I am supporting her as much as possible. As a result, I am attempting to avoid contact with people as much as possible. Thank you for your consideration. Govna wayne As always, these are the thoughts of Wayne Umland, and may not reflect the views of CSCC, NCCC or RMR.
