The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education.
The curriculum structure at Wesley College allows students to complete a VCE program over Years 10, 11 and 12. Students at Wesley College complete a program that consists of 22 units.
Students are required to complete, satisfactorily, a minimum of 16 units, including:
• AtleastthreeunitsfromthestudyofEnglish
• AsequenceofUnits3&4inthreeotherstudies apart from the compulsory English
Year 11 students studY:• Units1&2ofEnglish,Literature,EnglishLanguageorEnglishasaSecondLanguage
• Tenotherunits:theseunitswillusuallybeatUnits1&2level,butitispossibletostudyatUnits3&4level, provided the appropriate selection criteria are met
Year11studentsmaystudyoneVCEsubjectatUnits3&4leveliftheyarewellorganisedandacademicallysuited.BeforeastudentisacceptedforaUnits3&4subjectinYear11,thestudentmustachieveaBgradeaverageinallsubjectsstudiedinYear10
TherearebenefitstobegainedfromstudyingaUnits3&4subjectwhileinYear11.
StudyofaUnits3&4subjectenablesstudentsto:
• Experiencestudyatthislevelbeforeenteringa“full”Year 12 study program
• Studyasixthsubject,whichmaybeofadvantagefortertiary entrance purposes
• Layafoundationforstudyofauniversityenhancementsubject
Prospective Year 11 students may undertake studies in oneUnits3&4levelsubject,butmustfirstconsultwiththeircurrentteacher,theappropriateHeadofLearningand Careers Counsellor.
Year 12 students studY:• Units3&4ofEnglish,Literature,EnglishLanguageorEnglishasaSecondLanguage
• FourothersubjectsofUnits3&4
TheVCEisacceptedforentrytoleadingAustralianandinternationaluniversities,subjecttoentrypoliciessetbyeachuniversity.TheVCEisaninternationallyrecognised pre-tertiary qualification.
Top ranking universities around the world accept the VCEandtheAustralianTertiaryAdmissionRank(ATAR)score in applications for undergraduate admissions.
All decisions regarding a student’s selection of an academic program are made in consultation with Senior School staff. The student’s level of English will be taken into consideration when making final decisions.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB Diploma) is a two-year pre-university curriculum for Senior School students.
TheIBDiplomaischaracterisedbyits:
• Academicbreadth,depthandrigourwhicharerecognisedbyuniversitiesworld-wide
• Emphasisonthepromotionofinternationalawareness among students
• Attentiontodevelopingsociallyresponsiblecitizensoftheworldwithanawarenessofglobalperspectives
requirements of the iB diplomaStudentsarerequiredtostudysixsubjects,tobechosen from groups or areas of learning (see diagram below – The IB Diploma Hexagon).
ItiscompulsoryforstudentstoselectasubjectfromeachofGroups1to5.Fortheirsixthsubject,studentsmaychooseasubjectfromGroup6orasecondsubjectfromGroups2to5.Threeofthesubjectsarestudiedat Higher Level and the remaining three are studied at Standard Level.
The goal of the International Baccalaureate is to educate the whole person and to produce graduates whoareactive,responsibleandcompassionatecitizens.
TobeeligiblefortheIBDiploma,studentsmustfulfilltheCreativity,ActionandService(CAS)requirement.
StudentsmustalsocompleteanExtendedEssay,anin-depthstudy(4,000words)ofatopicchosenbythestudent.ThisiscompletedwithinaparticularsubjectandiswritteninEnglish,unlessbeingcompletedin thestudentsLanguageAorB.
Students are also required to study the Theory of Knowledge(TOK),asubjectwhichhelpsstudentstoexplore,throughamultidisciplinaryapproach,the basisofknowledgeandthenatureofknowing.
