ADVANCE NOTICE

Mon. 9th April Chacewater Projects AGM

The Chacewater Projects will be holding its AGM a little late thisyear, not until next month, on Monday 9th April at 7.30.pm in theWheal Jane Room, Chacewater Village Hall. However, perhapsthis will give you a little time to consider how the organisationworks and what you might be able to offer.

The organisation exists to benefit the community in the Parish ofChacewater. The annual bonfire night provides the financialmeans to decorate the village in the festive season and give thechildren a Christmas Party. This year it is hoped that a fund toprovide an inclusive roundabout in the play area at theRecreation Ground can be created. More about that at themeeting.

Meanwhile, we are looking for a new secretary to keep notes ofour decisions. Sue Murley is moving away so is having to resign. We thank her for all that she has done.

Oh No! Not a secretary, you may be thinking! But it’s not too badas there are rarely more than 3 meetings a year. So, could youoffer a little time to help? If you are wondering just what isinvolved please call 01872 560485 and have a chat with Brenda.

On the way home early on Saturday morning 17th February itwas depressing to see the “Welcome to Our Village” message hadbeen systematically ripped off the planter on Chacewater Hill. This petty act surely failed to lift the perpetrator’s Friday nightout, but it’s a blow to the rest of us.

JENNY''S GARDEN PATCH ~ MARCHTwo months of the year have passed by already and the days are getting longer. It is lovely to feel a little more strength in the sun .The first signs of spring arearriving, but beware, don't let your enthusiasm run away on mild days. Frostswill still be lurking around, it is better to delay sowing and planting if the soil is too wet andcold.

PLANT OF THE MONTHCHOISYA

Choisya is a small genus of aromatic evergreen shrubs in the rue family, Rutaceae. Membersof the genus are commonly known as Mexican orange or mock orange due to the similarity

of their flowers with those of the closely related orange, both in shapeand scent. They are native to southern North America, from Arizona, NewMexico. In mild gardens it will reach full size in the open, but elsewhere plantsbenefit if sheltered from the cold winds that can damage the foliage andrestrict growth - a warm wall is ideal, or plants may be grown in containersthat can be moved under cover in winter. The bushes look attractive at alltimes, but especially when covered with the very fragrant white blooms

shorten stems by 25-30cm (10-12in) after flower to encourage a second flush in autumn.

MARCH IN THE GARDEN Apply plant foods to established borders Mulch bare soil Continue to prune overgrown and late-flowering shrubs Continue pruning roses Cut back perennials and grasses that were left over winter Divide overgrown clumps of perennials Dead-head daffodils Plant summer-flowering bulbs Sow hardy annuals out of doors Continue sowing bedding under cover Sow vegetables in prepared beds out of doors Protect fruit blossom from late frosts Treat moss on lawns Re-seed bare patches on lawns Start repotting houseplants Check pond pumps and get them running. Make sure the birds have plenty of food and fresh water

I hope you have a good month in your gardens, there is plenty to be getting on with. If yourequire any further horticultural advice please come along to Chacewater Garden Centreand have a chat with any of the helpful and friendly staff.. Jenny Matthews (Manageress)

During a very wet January, many Byways and Bridleways werewaterlogged and flooded in some places. Footpaths becameextremely muddy. However, on Sunday 4th February the CRoWwalking group enjoyed sunshine and clear skies. Once again, 20walkers plus 8 dogs headed out on a westerly route promisingfirmer ground under foot. Leaving the Square, we turnedimmediately up Jakes’ Lane (Byway 301/68/1) noting the OldPrint Shop on the left, opposite access to the former Royal Mailsorting office. Along Falmouth Road, the Bowling Club’s brandnew fence was admired as we passed by neighbouring

and – two of the oldest and the newestdwellings in Chacewater.

Safely across High Street – not so much traffic on Sundaymorning – we followed Bakehouse Lane (Byway 75/1) around theback of the recently renovated cottages.Pausing on the bridge at Sergeants Hill we could see the

Leat running smoothly in a good clear channel. Then, via theTerrace, we headed west on Wheal Busy Lane (Byway 63/1) withbroad views across the valley and out towards Carn Brae. Afterdodging puddles we came (by Footpath 5/2) to Wheal Busy andanother opportunity to ponder the future of the Old Forge and toview cast iron lintels of the set over itsdoorways.

We could have gone straight on the Bridleway (61/2) past. Unfortunately, connecting Bridleway (61/1)

was impassable as a 25 metre-long section lay deep understanding water. So, we turned right and went a short way up thelane before turning west again onto a wide, well-kept route(cobbled with white quartz) over the downs, past and on to Hallenbeagle (Bridleways 60/1 & 60/2, joining Byways2/4, 2/3 & 2/2). Here we turned south on the level, metalled road(Byway 1/3, 1/4) reaching on Bridleway(1/10). Following the bridleway (1/9 & 1/5) we passed WhealBusy allotments, returned to the Old Forge and then re-tracedour route east on Wheal Busy Lane (63/1) onto The Terrace andStation Road, arriving back at the Car Park by 11.15am.

Join the next walk on Sunday 4th March. All very Welcome.Meet at 9.30am in the Car Park.

Chacewater Village Hall AGM22nd March at 7.30.pm in the Killifreth Room

In spite of all the efforts of the committee to encourageorganisations that use the hall and individuals who care about it,we cannot seem to attract new, young and energetic people tojoin the committee. It would appear that there is an “If it ain’tbroke – don’t fix it” feeling. But things DO change and thecommittee needs to take decisions that affect the wholecommunity. So, it is important that representatives from thecommunity are part of that decision making.

All organisations in the should be represented. Electedmembers must be, under the terms of the Trust Deed, 1 fewerthan the number of organisations represented. This means thatif your organisation is not represented the numbers are reducedby !

Dear Reader

It is always good to start off the article with topical news forChacewater and I am pleased to be able to do just that. Therehas been an in depth look at the Cornwall Electoral Divisionsthroughout the entire county and last week, as I write, at the fullCornwall Council meeting councillors voted with a clear majorityto accept the Boundary Commissions recommendations forCornwall, as from May 2021, to have 87 elected members, whichworks out at approximately 5,000 electors per Council member. The good news for Chacewater Parish is that, although in the

Page 25: The views expressed in this publication are those of …...3 SPECIAL EVENTS THIS MONTH Thurs. 1st 7.30.pm. Chacewater & District Horticultural & Fanciers Society AGM in the W.I. Hall

25

early stages there was a proposal to include in the Kea ElectoralWard the villagers from Twelveheads, this on furtherconsideration was rejected and I am pleased to say that theagreed recommendation is that Twelveheads will remain withinChacewater which ensures better representation as they are alsopart of Chacewater Parish. I know that the residents ofTwelveheads welcome this decision. Having now decided uponthe Cornwall Council Electoral Wards, the next stage will be tolook at Parish boundaries.

A recommendation has now been granted, to convert the formerStamps Engine House near the Wheal Busy Cross Roads andmake it into a dwelling. There are many conditions associatedwith this permission concerning the finish of the building as itmust reflect its former life and not become too domesticatelooking. This will ensure that part of Chacewater’s heritage ispreserved and not allowed to fall into a ruin.

I am pleased to report that the caravan installed over theChristmas period near the Wheal Busy Crossroads withoutplanning permission is being investigated by Cornwall Council’sEnforcement Department.

There has been an issue with a reoccurrence of blocked drainsalong The Terrace which is the result of heavy rain fall washingdebris down the Wheal Busy Lane despite Cormac previouslyclearing them. I have asked Mr Richard Northey to look at thescene and see if he can help, but we have had an exceptionallywet winter and the heavy bursts of rain bring down all manner ofearth, leaves etc

Finally, we would like to congratulate Chacewater Players fortheir recent performance of the Pantomime Sleeping Beauty. Iwould not single out any one particular cast member butcongratulate them all on another memorable evening full of fun, colour and entertainment. Our only disappointment, on thenight that we attended, was that the audience was rathersparce. We are so fortunate to have this group of P.T.O.

There are some signs of Spring-time. On the bank, LesserCelandines have yellow flowers and new leaf buds are showingon bare bramble branches. However, in early February, a seriesof heavy hailstorms topped-up the pond with icy water. Toadsand frogs remain under cover; no doubt they will come out inMarch.

Meanwhile, the pond water is crystal clear. Sunlight flickersthrough green leaves and stalks of oxygenating weed. Caddis flylarvae may be seen as they tumble very slowly through the silt.Their tubular cases (about 20mm long) are mostly brown andblend with the muddy bottom debris. Sometimes, a pale piece ofstalk on an individual case stands out like a grain of rice movingamong the leaves.

Occasionally, the sparkling water surface shivers when a lightsquall of wind sends across patterns of circles, darts and ripples.Newts are quite active. Dark heads and backs generallycamouflage their lunges to the surface. One flashes a black-spotted orange belly. Usually, they are seen when they turn andreveal pale undersides and wriggling tails as they dive. Clearwater allows the newt’s progress to be watched until itdisappears deeper into the weed stems.

Tony Gay has sold his Fore Street Fish & Chips shop on Friday16th February and is going into “semi-retirement”.

has been serving fishsuppers and sit-down meals to Chacewaterresidents and visitors for nearly twentyyears. Many of the village’s most highlyregarded citizens have dined frequently atGables. Some visitors travel from milesaway and Tony can remember regularorders from one year to the next.

Tony started work in the trade in 1982,frying chips at in Truro. Inthose days a portion of fish & chips cost 66pand Tony had hair, platform heels and“soul” as well. He began renting theChacewater shop from former owner Mrs Jean Howes in 1998and bought the freehold some ten years ago.

Few of Gables customers know that Truro lad Tony’s early careerplaced him as a retail assistant in upmarket men’s outfitterPeter Boggia’s store. However, colour-blindness meant he wasnot really suited to this. One time he repeatedly offered brownshirts to a customer looking for a green one.

This led to Tony’s move into catering and delivering traditionalCornish hospitality. Maintaining his long-standing business atthe heart of Chacewater has helped to keep the village alive aswell as helping to feed people. No doubt many will be verygrateful that Tony Gay is handing over the business as a goingconcern. It will help to keep us all going.

Many Thanks Tony and Good Luck in your Retirement.

Paul Shevlin.

It’s all change at Gables Fish & Chips shop in Chacewater. Newowners Paul and Kay Seadon have moved down from SuttonColdfield, north of Birmingham, to take over. Initially, they willbe keeping Gables opening hours. This will give them time tosettle into the living accommodation above the shop and begin tore-furbish the premises.

Kay used to run a care agency in northWarwickshire. Paul is a skilled motormechanic with a passion for cooking. The couple spent some time examiningsmall business opportunities in the northof England as they sought a betterquality of life. Finding nothing suitable, they looked south and eventually discovered Gables inChacewater. They bought the freehold of No. 24 Fore Street andexpect to develop the business in the heart of the community.

Paul is tending the fryers already and Kay speaks withenthusiasm about their future plans. The core business willcontinue with traditional fish and chips. For starters there willbe little extras on the menu – cheesy chips and gravy perhaps.Longer opening hours will follow, most likely when the newowners are established. In time, Kay would like to offer

Let’s give Kay and Paul a bigwelcome to Chacewater. Why not treat yourself to a fish suppersoon?
