On Saturday, Oct. 29, AT 7 pm, our barn and back parking lot will be trans-formed into a Halloween experience. The Youth Group will be creating “The Haunted Barn” for you to experience; the back lot will be “Trunk & Treat” and refreshments will be in the Community Room.

We are inviting people to commit to a parking space with their car and give out treats to the visiting munchkins. Your costumes and decorations are optional but will add to the fun. Sign-up sheets for help with the haunted barn can be found at the Youth Table in the Gathering Area. Mark your calendars and please come! You, your family & your friends are invited.

Livingston County appears to be very prosperous, yet within our county over 7,000 people live below the poverty line. Most of these are the working poor, who sur-vive payday to payday. But it takes very little to cause these folks to sink into desperate straits: an unexpected car repair, an illness or other emergency. Every day these peo-ple turn to the eight Catholic churches in the county and several other Christian churches for assistance.

At St. Mary Magdalen, we receive calls every day from folks looking for help. Our deacons, Jim Chevalier, Gary Prise and Dave Scharf field these calls and use the money we have available to help them. Non-parishioners are directed to a county-wide, non-denominational group called LOVE, INC (Love, in the name of Christ). They inter-view the one making the request to verify the need and avoid duplications. Checks are then written that add up to hundreds of dollars a week and several thousand dollars a month. Where do we get this money? Like many churches in the county, we support LOVE, INC, for their work. We contribute $500 a month from our general fund. The ad-ditional money we give away comes from the money donated to the Alms box located in our gathering area. Added to that is several hundred dollars from the VG receipts we collect and from the sale of the paper collected near the barn. All of this adds up to sev-eral thousand dollars a year. While we might not be able to help everyone who asks, we have been able to help most; while we may not have been able to fulfill every request, we have always been able to give them something.

Our Pastoral Council hosted Directions 2012 on September 14 and gathered with the ministry teams who help direct our parish. All of the teams put together their goals/strategies based on the new pastoral goals which are:

Being a community of simplicity, peace, joy and inspiration, we will continue to enrich the spiritual life of the indi-vidual members within our community.

Building on those spiritual lives, we will continually cultivate a welcoming and inclusive community.

Embracing the Great Commandment of Christ to “Love one another as I have loved you,” we will expand those practices to address the needs of the greater community.

The days are shorter but are brightened by a wash of color.   In gar‐

dens  and  farmlands,  the  planters  hurry  to  gather  in  the  bounty  of 

fruits, vegetables and grains.   There are  fruits and vegetables  to be 

canned; grain  to be milled and other foods  to be carefully stored so 

that  they can  last  through  the  long winter.   The sheer bounty  leads 

many to be genuinely grateful.  Our modern world has few equivalents. While a few industries may have busy seasons, there is no real "harvest time" for most of us. Perhaps the only thing even remotely similar to a harvest time is April 15. On tax day,

we can truly see how much we have received as income and then we figure out what percentage of it will be given to the government as taxes.

Perhaps it would be better to ask our parishioners to look at their financial stewardship in April rather than October. But real stewards are not motivated by a law like tax payers. Real stewards are motivated by gratitude and a genuine desire to return to God a portion of what has been received. So during harvest time, we are asked to look again at how much we have received and how much of that is shared with others for the love of God..

The Scriptures speak of returning to God a tithe, a tenth of all the time, talent and treasure that has been re-ceived. As Catholics, we define the ideal of a tithe as giving 5% to the Church and donating the other 5% to worth-while charities.

The December/January packet of stewardship envelopes begins with a commitment card which helps our Finance Council to budget for the coming year. But more importantly it is a statement of what will be returned to God in thanks for all we have received.

While most use weekly envelopes, many parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen now make their offering electronically. The electronic transfer (EFT) makes your commitment automatically each month. If you would like to use this op-tion, check the box on the commitment card, look for an EFT form in the Gathering Area, or go to our website, www.saintmarymagdalen.org, click on the tab Registration at the bottom of the page, then click on “Print Electronic Transfer Form”, also at the bottom of the Registration page, to print out a form. You may drop it in the collection basket on the weekend.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT: SATURDAY, OCT. 15! We will begin with a sandwich meal at 6 pm which is op-tional at the request of those who don’t want to go home after Liturgy and then come back. Sign up is essential for this. Fun activities will begin at 6:30 pm with 1.) playroom for small children, 2.) Gym activities, 3.) card game room, 4.) board game room, and at 7 pm we will show the movie:Miracle Dogs. Everyone is invited, so please come.

TRUNK & TREAT & HAUNTED BARN! Again this year we will have Trunk & Treat for the kids, and fun and games in the Community room, along with refreshments. You can get frightened by attending the Youth Group inspired Haunted Barn. More details are coming.

LECTIO DIVINA Lectio Divina will be offered three times a month through May 2012. The prayer sessions are on Tuesday evenings at 7pm in the Parish library. The duration will vary, but about 30-45 minutes. The sessions are open and you do not have to commit every week. RELIGIOUS FORMATION  from Mary Mahar

Our new year is up and running! Parents of youth in 9th grade, please mark your calendar for our parent and candidate meeting on Sunday, October 9, at 5:30pm. This month we will be celebrating the Rite of Acceptance with our youth in Grades 2, 4, and 9. This Rite is the acknowledgement of our youth and their families of the first step in the journey towards cele-brating the Sacrament they are preparing for. We as a parish will affirm our support and prayers for them. The candidates will be signed with the cross on their foreheads, ears, eyes, lips, heart, shoulders, hands and feet by their parents and then a blessing by Fr. Jim, and he will ask us to bless them as well. This Rite is the way we begin serious preparation towards sacraments and it is so the youth say yes, they are ready to find out more! First grade parents will have a meeting during class times on Oct 12/13, and second grade parents will have a meeting during class times on Oct 19/20.

Parking lot drop off: We have one lane in the circular drive for drop off only, no standing. We also have two of the crosswalks blocked off to allow little ones and their families to get out into the parking lot safely (please do not drive down these lanes). Please be patient and be sure to watch for little ones in the parking lot as you come and go. I would like to thank our Coordinator and Lead Catechists for this year. They have worked very hard to get our cate-chists into the classrooms and have helped get everything set up for this new year! I know that many of our families are facing difficult times. If you have not registered for classes for financial reasons, please call me.

MAGDALEN’S LITTLE PEOPLE   from Kathie Anderer GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL!

Our new school year has started and we are up and running and ready to learn and make new friends. The children arrived to meet their new teachers and classmates with great anticipation. Returning again this year is our dedicated staff. Mrs. Wende Cofield and Mrs. Ann Donohue are our teachers for the 3’s and young 4’s and Mrs. Sue Abraham and Mrs. Kathy Riccardi are our teachers for the 4’s and “Early 5’s”.

October will be full of new adventures. We have a field trip planned for Spicers Orchard in Hartland. We get to go to the pump-kin patch and pick out a pumpkin to take home. We always have such a great time walking around the pumpkin patch searching for the perfect pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern. The cider and donuts aren’t bad either! We will also have our pictures taken and our vi-sion checked by the Health Department. At the end of the month we will celebrate Halloween with our classroom parties.

Looking forward to another fun filled year. It was a beautiful summer but it’s great to be back! There is Fall in the air and with that, all of the beautiful signs of the season to enjoy and explore. God’s blessings, Kathie Anderer, director

This month we are busy getting the haunted barn ready for the parish Halloween celebration on Saturday, Oct 29th. Along with the party that takes place in the community room, and

the Trunk and Treat in the parking lot, come by the barn for a tour of the Haunted Mu-seum! The tour is suitable for those aged 7-10 yrs and older. We are looking forward to a great “show”!

On October 30th, we are headed to Lansing for Jamboree! This is a day long event that takes place at the Lansing Center and gathers nearly 1,000 teens from across the diocese. We gather for live music, to see Chris Padget; we celebrate liturgy together, eat and play at the end of the day with a dance. If you are interested in par-ticipating, check out the parish website for the details and to find the needed paperwork. Next month will be a very exciting month, as the trip we have been working toward and raising money for will finally be upon us. A group of 32 of us, teens and adults, will board the bus on Thursday the 18th and head off to Indianapolis for the National Catholic Youth Conference! It is three days of inspirational speakers, live, Christian music, nationally renowned speakers; opportunities for Reconciliation, daily Mass and chances all weekend long to encounter the face of God and be moved by the Holy Spirit! Beginning this month, the youth will be again selling Dearborn Meats. You can preorder your Thanksgiving turkey and or Christmas ham. We will be in the gathering area for a few weekends this month and then you can order with me via my email. Of course you can order all the delicious meats and meat snacks that Dearborn has to offer. Delivery and pick up will be the Monday of Thanksgiving week.

THE EDGE   for 6, 7 & 8 graders 

 

We are BACK and meeting regularly again on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Our first meeting back is the 10th in the youth room. Come and join us for EDGE Adventure!! Start off in the youth room and be open to where the meet-ing might take you! Come dressed for the outdoors and ready for adventure. Look too, for information regarding our trip to Spicer’s Apple Orchard in Hartland. Our second meeting will take place there. Watch the bulletin and website for details. But for now, note it on your calendar.

YOUTH NEWS  

ON THE JOURNEY from Diane Kubus

I heard a simple saying the other day that I really liked. “Being open to the truth brings wisdom. If we are not open to the truth, nothing can pene-trate.” Isn’t that true... We all know what it’s like when someone is not able to see the truth. You just can’t get through to them no matter what you say or do. Maybe that’s where they got, “you can lead them to water, but you can’t make them drink”. You can’t make someone see the truth and you certainly can’t change them. These things have to come from within.

Becoming Catholic is like that. It comes from within from the very start and it requires one to be open to the truth about themselves and their lives. The process of becoming Catholic is a time of conversion, a time of change. It’s a time of discovery, a time of learning and of growth. Although it’s a journey of faith, I like to call it also a “journey of the heart” because it really is a “turning” of the heart to God.

The person in the process of becoming Catholic begins to see differently, value differently and relate differ-ently because the person is different. In Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians: "If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!" (5:17) In the process a person changes inwardly and in one's way of being in the world.

But what starts anyone of us on an inner journey? The experience of this journey to God is begun often qui-etly, it’s never dramatic. We are in the midst of our daily lives with umpteen commitments and all the pressures we face every day. We move from one thing to the next, responding to the needs of those around us, keeping up with the demands of work, seeking out a bit of relaxation when it’s possible and mostly just living as best we can from day to day. Then our world starts to change. Conversion, is rarely instantaneous or dramatic, and is hardly ever conven-ient. Sometimes in our consciousness, something seems to be missing or something just doesn’t seem right or something doesn’t make sense. We can’t quite put our finger on it, but we feel dissatisfied or a bit restless.

Then something happens and it breaks into our awareness. Sometimes we’re made to examine the meaning and direction of our lives because of another person who comes into our lives. Sometimes the conversion journey starts with a word that we hear; a word of hope or forgiveness. Or it’s a word of challenge that we just can’t seem to brush aside. Something starts to nag at us and that vague restlessness and dissatisfaction becomes more acute. We begin to look more closely at the truth within ourselves.

Whatever it is - large or small, a person, word or event – it’s a turning to God, desiring a change of heart, choosing life and embracing a relationship with God. Conversion includes listening to God, and it requires an open-ness and acceptance of truth.

The first phase of the process of becoming Catholic is called “Faith Inquiry” because it’s the time when peo-ple inquire about the Catholic faith. It can be the beginning of a journey of faith, a journey of the heart for those who chose it. Faith inquiry for adults is on Monday evenings from 7 - 8:30pm in the East Room. The children and youth (7 yrs. and older) meet on the same night, same time (separate from the adults) in the Library. The Pastoral Council would like to commend Karen McNally for all the ministry she does at Gleaners. Karen has been at Gleaners for many years and has helped people in need with her caring, loving and ministry skills. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do, Karen! The Council would also commend Lee Hostnik for his ministry to the Youth Group. Lee has be-come a wonderful role model for the teens. Lee comes to Youth Group, interacts with the teens and youth leaders and shares his faith journey with them. Great job, Lee!

CHARITY & JUSTICE CHARITY & JUSTICE CHARITY & JUSTICE  from Lisa Klein Right to Life Prayer Chain is October 2, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Meet at Pregnancy Help Clinic at 1:45 and join in prayer for the protection of the sanctity of human life.

CROP Walk is October 16! It starts at St. Patrick Church with registration at 1:30 and the three-mile walk begins at 2:00 p.m. Join our St. Mary Magdalen team and walk to raise awareness and funds to support world hunger.

St. Mary Magdalen will host the R.E.A.C.H. Homeless Shelter Oct. 31 through Nov. 7, 2011. This is a program sponsored by the Salvation Army in which local churches host the homeless of Livingston County. We are in need of volunteers to do the following:

Morning Chaperones – Prepare and serve breakfast and sack lunches. Approximately 6:30 – 8:30 AM Morning Drivers – Transport guests to Salvation Army at approximately 8:30 AM. Join guests for breakfast earlier when possible. Evening Drivers – Transport guests from Salvation Army to St. Mary Magdalen at approximately 5:30 PM. Join for dinner if possible. Dinner Hosts – Prepare and serve dinner meal. Clean up. Eat with guests and socialize, approximately 6 – 8 PM. Evening Chaperones – Socialize with guests from 8 – 11 PM. Overnight Chaperones - At least 1 each male and female. Sleep in shifts – one host awake at all times till 6:30 AM.

Wow! We not only had great weather for our annual Hospice/VA palliative care car show, we had a record turnout. There were 183 cars beating the previous record of 150. We had a lot of brothers that made this car show spectacular and I would like to give thanks to all of you and special thanks to our two co-chairs, Dan Schifko and John Yanok. As a result of all the hard work, great weather and all the fantastic car enthusiasts, we were able to raise over $4000 for this wonderful cause. Thanks to all of you and hope to see you next year.

The DEACONʹS BENCH   The DEACONʹS BENCH   The DEACONʹS BENCH   from Dave Scharf How many times, in the course of a given day, have you heard someone protest, “That’s not fair!” Children on a playground shout when they detect a foul play: “That’s not fair!” Siblings doing household chores may com-plain, “I’m doing more work!” or “My chores are more difficult; that’s not fair!” Students at school may resent the ex-tra attention given to a classmate... “She’s the teacher’s favorite; that’s not fair!” A brother thinks his piece of pie ap-pears to be smaller than his sister’s -- “That’s not fair!” Someone at work receives a raise in salary when another person thinks he/she is more deserving: “I have seniority. I’ve been here longer; that’s not fair!” The coach of the Little League baseball team always puts her child in as starting pitcher; other players are annoyed... “That’s not fair!” Taxpayers bristle at the fact that increasing numbers of people are applying for and receive welfare from the govern-ment... “I have to work hard to make a living for me and my family. So should everyone else... that’s not fair!” In each of these several examples, human sensibilities regarding fairness and patience have been offended, precisely because of the fact that they are human.

Most of us think that good work, seniority and experience should be rewarded, that all should be subject to the same rules, like “First come, first served,” that everyone should be treated impartially and that there should be no exceptions and no favorites! Therefore, when confronted with a situation our sense of fairness in provoked. Now, that being said, ever wonder how Jesus might have felt? Is fairness based upon our standards or on God’s. We are commanded to “love one another as I have loved you”. Do we? Can we?

Our parish is a “Parish family.” This is one reason you may have decided to become a member, because we are a family. As family members, we are called to be involved both with our time and talent, as well as with our financial resources. “Budget” has been one of the key concerns of our Federal and State government. It is also a parish con-cern.

As a follow up to my homily of Oct.8-9, we all need to be aware of our parish financial condition. As indicated in the monthly Visionary, our current annual budget is $1,583,190; this equates to $30,446 for a weekly budget. However, the average weekly income received for the first 12 weeks of this fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) is $20,445! We need everyone’s help to meet our parish budget. Currently, our parish has 1271 families registered, but only 376 envelopes are being used. This includes electronic fund transfers. Please, please pray about increasing your weekly contribution if at all possible during these difficult economic times. And I especially appeal to those 895 families who are not now using their envelopes.

SERVANT OF MANY  SERVANT OF MANY  SERVANT OF MANY  from Gary Prise A short time ago my spiritual director shared some wisdom with me from an unknown author. It’s worth passing on, it has to do with resenting someone, and it goes like this:

“The moment you start to resent a person you become their slave. They control your dreams, absorb your digestion, rob you of your peace of mind and good will, and take away the pleasure of your work. They ruin your spirituality and nullify your prayers. You cannot take a vacation without them going along! They destroy your freedom of mind and hound you wher-ever you go. There is no way to escape the person you resent. They are with you when you are awake. They in-vade your privacy when you sleep. They are close beside you when you eat, when you drive your car, and when you are on the job. You can never have efficiency or happiness. They influence even the tone of your voice. They require you to take medicine for indigestion, headaches and loss of energy. They even steal your last moment of consciousness before you go to sleep. So if you want to be a slave, harbor your resentments.” When some one hurts me or I have a conflict with another I get mad and all too often stew about it for weeks. In reality who am I really hurting; the other person usually has no idea I’m mad, and they probably couldn’t care. It really is best to for-give, move ahead, and live life in peace as God intended.

October 1 (Saturday) THE BLESSING OF PETS Deacon Dave Scharf will lead this prayer asking God’s blessing on our pets at 10 am under the canopy at the main entrance!

October 15 (Saturday) FAMILY FUN NIGHT !

Games, activities, a movie; Fun for all beginning at 6:30pm. An optional sandwich meal will be available at 6pm for those who stay after the 4:30 Liturgy. Everyone is invited!

October 29 (Saturday) HALLOWEEN PARTY and HAUNTED BARN !

It’s a family party” A Trunk & Treat Gathering from 7–9 pm in the back parking lot with refreshments in the Com-munity Room. We are looking for volunteers to set up their car trunk or truck or van or table in the back parking lot and to decorate it! Then just be there to hand out candy or non-food treats to the children who come by. Cos-tumes and decorations are encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to the best decorated space.

November 1 (Tuesday) ALL SAINTS DAALL SAINTS DAALL SAINTS DAYYY

This wonderful holy day of obligation celebrates all those who are with the Lord. Come celebrate our communion with all the saints. The Liturgies are at 9 am and 7 pm!

November 2 (Wednesday) ALL SOULS DAALL SOULS DAALL SOULS DAYYY

This feast is a day of prayer for all those who have died. We pray that, if the dead are not already with God, the Lord might bring them into His glory. Our deceased relatives and friends will be commemorated at our annual me-morial Liturgy at 7 pm.
