“The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each

are its temple.” (Revelation 21:21)

“There are times when we have to look past the troubles of today and look to the glory of the life to come.” – Anonymous

There are many rewarding aspects about

being a pastor. As a shepherd, the pastor is

invited “inside the pages” of peoples’ ongoing

life-stories. Most of the time, the invitation

comes at the time of either celebration or

hardship. There are places where I wish you

could ride along in my shirt pocket and see

what I see and hear what I hear.

I will take you to one place and share

something that still moves my soul, some four

days after the experience. That experience I

refer to is shared in the next column. There

are some things I want to tell you to set the

stage.

As you may know, we share in leading worship

with the residents at Bornemann’s Nursing

Home, just north and east of Our Saviour.

Most residents are in wheelchairs and

Bornemann staffers bring them to the little

chapel for our Tuesday afternoon worship.

In days gone by, the residents had been

arranged row-by-row facing the podium and

we did a very traditional worship service.

That was very good, but something better was

just around the corner. Some incredible

dynamics happened when we changed the

following three things:

1. We got to know each other’s names. The

Bornemann staff made permanent name

tags for each resident who came to chapel

and those name tags are faithfully placed

on every participant by the time the pastor

arrives for the service. New participants

get name tags also, the moment they roll

into the chapel for the first time. This

allows the pastor to call the participants by

name. Better than that, it allows him to

memorize their names. Everyone loves

hearing their name; it tells them they are

noticed, special, and appreciated. Doing

this, more than anything else, helped the

worship to come alive like it never had

before.

2. We began to socialize. The Bornemann

staff positioned the worshipers in a

horseshoe-like circle with the podium being

at the open end of that horseshoe. This

allows the residents to see each other,

Page 2: The voice jan 2013

The Voice Online

whereas in the former seating method with

rows facing forward, there was less

opportunity for socialization. This also

allows the pastor to walk around the group

during the worship and to interact with the

worshippers. Often we go around the

circled group and ask for prayer needs.

3. We started to add some fun to worship. We

added a “Bible Trivia Time” with real

prizes provided by the Bornemann

Activities Staff. The group has a little more

to look forward to when they come. After a

person wins a prize, they have to “zip their

lips” and not answer any further questions.

Some of them get too excited and they spill

the beans and answer additional questions

anyway. Even folks who are unable to

speak because of strokes raise their hand to

give answers.

Worship attendance at the nursing home

chapel services is growing and I think it may

have to do with the changes we made above.

But more so, faith and friendships are growing

because of the changes! In the end, it’s the

Holy Spirit who is credited for such changes.

Who are these residents? These are folks who

have lost their homes, their cars, and many

have lost spouses and children. Some rarely or

never get visitors or letters. For the most part,

they are in failing health. For some, their

minds are outliving their bodies. For others,

their bodies are outliving their minds. When

they come to worship, many don’t want it to be

over; they stay and you can see they wish for

more.

A few weeks ago while going around the circle

asking for prayer needs, one gentleman in a

wheelchair made his request, “I want to walk

again”. What do you tell him? Here is what I

said to him, “Joe, we certainly will pray that

you can walk again. We will also look forward

to the day when you will walk on a street of

gold (Revelation 21:21) when the Lord takes us

home.” Herein lies a gift of Christmas, owned

by us now, but a gift to be opened later.

We often drive past these institutions, never

thinking about the persons and hardships

within them. Breathe a prayer for these folks

that in the epilogue chapters of their lives, as

many go down the final stretch of the journey,

that the joy of Christ would be the center of

their lives, in anticipation of not just walking

again, but jumping and leaping and praising

the Lord.

New Year's Day Prayer for

One and All

Dear Lord,

So far this year I've done well.

I haven't gossiped, lost my temper, been

greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or

overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that.

But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to

get out of bed, and from then on I'm

probably going to need a lot more help!

Amen.
