Hatch Back in my hometown, we had to cross a set of railroad tracks on the way to Roosevelt Elementary School. They were the half-way point on the then-long two and one-half block walk to school. Those tracks were important to us. We would gather unclaimed cucumbers from the grassy edges of the tracks in the summer. We’d leave pennies on the rail and wait for the train to squish them into a shiny new distortion. The tracks running north would curve off into the distance, out of sight and that is as far as we thought they went. To the south, they slid under a car-bridge and curved out of sight toward Main Street. A few years later I would discover them again on my way to high school, “Wow, they go to this part of town, too?” “The Chicago Northwestern Railroad”, that’s what they said on the cars. When the rail cars would go by, always slowly, we’d sit and watch. Some cars were wooden like little barns on wheels, other cars were steel, with ridges, like the inside of cardboard. Every car had a number and a date telling when it was built. The little Putt Putt was my favorite; that little two-man machine that would make rare appearances on those tracks…it sure looked like fun. A decade later, my then sister in-law would tell me how she was enticed by her cousins to hitch a ride on those trains and ride them down the tracks, jumping off as the train began to pickup speed near where her cousins lived close to that car bridge. She never said the tracks went farther, either. To me, the tracks only went from as far north as I could see to as far south as I could see – so in my mind, the whole tracks were only a mile long, I never considered they actually “went anywhere”. On the other side of those tracks at Roosevelt Elementary School, we learned about math and science, geography and history. We learned about the Battle of Gettysburg; Promontory Point, Utah (where the east and west lines of the railroad connected). We learned about a new state called Alaska; about Paul Revere’s famous Boston ride; we learned about the Boston Tea Party and the Teapot Dome Scandal; we learned about the Oregon Trail and the Erie Canal. We will come back to these in a moment. On December 14th, last month, we had our OSLC staff Christmas party at Titletown Brewery, the old railroad station on the west side of the Fox River. On the wall behind my seat was a very old map of the United States, showing all the railroad lines with the name of every stop. It is an amazing map. There are more than one of them on the walls there. With a little searching I found Promontory Point. My imagination went back to the golden spike that those steam pioneers drove in to tie the nation together. Wow! And there was Los Angeles, Denver, Portland, New York, Atlanta and all those other far away places! When I looked at my hometown on the map I could see that very railroad track from my childhood. Seeing Farther than 1/2 Mile in each DirectionPastor David H. Hatch

Back in my hometown, we had to cross a set ofrailroad tracks on the way to Roosevelt ElementarySchool. They were the half-way point on the then-longtwo and one-half block walk to school. Those tracks wereimportant to us. We would gather unclaimed cucumbersfrom the grassy edges of the tracks in the summer. We’dleave pennies on the rail and wait for the train to squishthem into a shiny new distortion.

The tracks running north would curveoff into the distance, out of sight and thatis as far as we thought they went. To thesouth, they slid under a car-bridge andcurved out of sight toward Main Street. Afew years later I would discover themagain on my way to high school, “Wow,they go to this part of town, too?”

“The Chicago Northwestern Railroad”,that’s what they said on the cars. Whenthe rail cars would go by, always slowly,we’d sit and watch. Some cars werewooden like little barns on wheels, othercars were steel, with ridges, like the insideof cardboard. Every car had a number anda date telling when it was built.

The little Putt Putt was my favorite; thatlittle two-man machine that would make rare appearanceson those tracks…it sure looked like fun. A decade later, mythen sister in-law would tell me how she was enticed by hercousins to hitch a ride on those trains and ride them downthe tracks, jumping off as the train began to pickup speednear where her cousins lived close to that car bridge. Shenever said the tracks went farther, either.

To me, the tracks only went from as far north as Icould see to as far south as I could see – so in my mind,

the whole tracks were only a mile long, I neverconsidered they actually “went anywhere”.

On the other side of those tracks at RooseveltElementary School, we learned about math and science, geography and history. We learned about the Battle ofGettysburg; Promontory Point, Utah (where the east and

west lines of the railroad connected). Welearned about a new state called Alaska;about Paul Revere’s famous Boston ride;we learned about the Boston Tea Partyand the Teapot Dome Scandal; we learnedabout the Oregon Trail and the ErieCanal. We will come back to these in amoment.

On December 14th, last month, we hadour OSLC staff Christmas party atTitletown Brewery, the old railroadstation on the west side of the Fox River. On the wall behind my seat was a veryold map of the United States, showing allthe railroad lines with the name of everystop. the tracks went a lot farther than ½mile north and south of where wesquished those pennies! It went so farand connected to every other track inthe nation – Wowsers!

Had my teachers at RooseveltSchool, back then, walkedus students over to those tracks andsaid, “These rails connect, withoutinterruption, to Gettysburg, Alaska,Boston, the Erie Canal and even toPromontory Point!” - Had I known thatthen, and touched my finger to thoserails with that big picture in my mind, Ibelieve the whole world would haveseemed smaller and reachable!

That track was a little steel-trailleading out of my Mayberry-like lifeinto the great big giant world of historyand adventure-but I did not know it!

Likewise, to touch the drivewayfrom our house makes a personal directconnection to an uninterruptedpathway to the rest of the world! Fromour front steps even, we can walk, drive, float or fly to most any point ofcivilization on God’s green earth. Allwe have to do is take that first step.

Getting our arms around the bigpicture of anything is not always aneasy thing to do. Often we feel stuck inour daily lives, the burden of tasks andresponsibilities prohibits us fromseeing life’s path any farther than ½mile to the north and ½ mile to thesouth. Would you agree? Often weonly see small pieces of things andrarely see the whole.

What can we learn here? Let’s lookbeyond “as far as the eye can see.”Things we supposed were out of reachare closer than we assumed. We areoften so caught up in the details werarely zoom out to get the largerpicture of our lives and our setting.

Life is an adventurous gift from God,inviting us to do more, go farther, reach beyond the limits and connect usto people and places.

How about lost relationships?Long-lost aunts, uncles, cousins andfriends don’t have to be far away andin the past. They may be a phone callaway, or merely the amount of time ittakes to fire off an email.

How about tensions with others?Ask a Christian if the Gospel canchange their life. Can a marriage behealed? Yes, with God’s help. Can anestranged relationship be brought closeagain? Yes! So, what’s the big pictureof “everything is connected” thinking? It’s “I can do all things through Christwho strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.

How about goals? The things wewant to accomplish while down here, the places we want to go orexperiences we want to have; they arefar closer than we know. Theboundaries we set for ourselves areoften too limited, and with God’s helpwe are capable of doing more than webelieve, and going farther than weever thought.

Touch the sidewalk and you aretouching the starting path to a bigworld adventure. Touch base with Godand you are communicating with theOne who touches everything!

I wonder…were my teachers backthen also living such a hectic day-to-day life where even they never sawthe tracks going more than a half amile in each direction? Maybe… Iknow I will need to be reminded againmyself, tomorrow.

A stonecutter delivered a slab of stone to a merchantand seeing all the wonderful goods, he said, “I wish Iwas a merchant and had such things.” In thetwinkling of an eye his wish was granted.

One day he saw a parade pass his store window withthe Prince in all his splendor. “I wish I were a prince.”And immediately he became a Prince – until the daythe hot sun beat down on him and he said, “I wish Iwere the sun, greater than any man.” And he becamethe sun until he came to a mountain, which wouldn’tlet him pass. “That mountain is greater than I. I wish Iwere a mountain.” Instantly, he became a mountainand he thought, “Now I am the greatest of all.”

One day a man climbed the mountain and withhammer and chisel began to tap away at it. Themountain, unable to stop the hammer, said, “Thatman is greater than I. I wish I was a man who cutstone.” Once again his wish was granted and hebecame a stonecutter. He lived a long, useful life andwas very happy. Moral – And be content with suchthings as ye have. Hebrews 13:5

The Offering – One Sunday the pastor toldhis congregation the church needed some extramoney and asked the members to prayerfullyconsider putting a bit extra in the offering plate.“Whoever gives the most will be able to choose threefavorite hymns.” As he received the offering plate hewas stunned to see a $500 bill laying on top. “This isamazing. I want to personally thank the person whodonated five-hundred dollars.” Mabel, a long-timemember shyly raised her hand.

“Come forward, Mabel. Thank you for yourgenerosity. Please pick your three hymns.” Mabel’s eyesbrightened as she looked over the congregation andpointed to the three most handsome men in the pews.“I’ll take him and him and him!”Moral - What meansone thing to us may mean something else to another.

An Assumption in the Cellar – Itwas one of Mother’s hectic days. The toast had

burned. One of her husband’s shoes had been chewedby the dog. The washer overflowed. When her smallson came in with his pants torn, she’d had enough.“Go right in, remove those pants and start mendingthem yourself!” She ordered. An hour later she noticedthe torn pants on the floor and the door to the cellar, usually kept closed, was open. Starting down the stairsshe said, loudly and sternly, “Are you running arounddown there with no pants on?” “No, ma’am,” came adeep voice. “I’m just down here reading your gasmeter.”Moral - Ask before you assume!

Hear Ye Hear Ye – The Sunday morningBible Classes (aka “Vice Versa Versa Vice” classes)are returning in January. You will be able to attendany of our three Sunday worship services get theadded value of attending a Sunday morning Bibleclass as well.

The class (same topic) will be offered at two differenthours on Sundays, allowing you the option of goingto worship first followed by a class, or vice versa. How cool is that? You know the time of the servicesalready. The classes will be at 9:30 and 10:30am. Onthis round the studies will match the same topic as thesermon – The Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments,Outdated Rules or EverCurrent Guides? – The TenCommandments coming to a pulpit near you, beginning in January. Yes siree Wilbur, you heard itright, a sermon series on the Stone Tablets thatcontinue to make history. The Bible classes onSundays will synchronize with these Holy Guidelinesand you will come away with a whole newperspective on humanity. And, we might learn just alittle bit about God too. Consider packing your Biblefor a double header – Sermon series/Bible classseries. Watch the church calendar for dates.
