What wonderful experiences we shared at
the 2014 Alpha Delta State Convention,
April 4–6, at the Polaris Hilton Hotel!
We were able to renew friendships and
make new friends. Delta Kappa Gamma
members always have a good time when
they are together. I would like to thank
Convention Coordinator, Judy McClana-
han and Convention Registrar, Linda
Diltz, for a job well done. Thank you to
the steering committee chapters and to my
chapter, Gamma Nu, for all of your hard
work. Thank you to the workshop pre-
senters and presiders and to the fabulous
Alpha Delta State Chorus. Thank you to
all members around the state for your
attendance at the convention. The saying
is that it takes a village to raise a child, it
also takes a village to have a successful
state convention.
It is always a joy to see our chapter presidents honored at the Presidents and
Founders Banquet on Saturday night. I hope all chapter presidents know how much
we appreciate their hard work. Chapters are the lifeblood of the Society and chapter
presidents are the heart of the chapters.
Now, it is time for chapters to prepare for the 2014-2016 biennium. The Leader-
ship Development Area Workshops will be held June 24th in Wilmot, June 25th in
Ada, and June 26th in Chillicothe. You will find more information and the registration
form in this issue of The Voice of Alpha Delta State. It is expected that all chapter
presidents will attend and hopefully bring other chapter officers. Please send the com-
pleted registration form to Meier Bauer.
I hope you are planning to go to Indianapolis to attend the International Conven-
tion July 28–August 1, 2014. During the business sessions, members will be voting on
changes to the Constitution. If you want your voice to be heard, you must attend the
convention.
The best part of serving as your state president these past ten months has been
getting to know members around the state. I thoroughly enjoy the e-mails, phone calls
and the chapter visits. I am sure that the rest of the biennium will be just as rewarding.
Have a happy and safe summer.

Alpha Delta State’s Bylaws and Policies and Procedures Committee has received
chapter rules from 31 chapters, hand-delivered guidelines and chapter rules samples to
41 chapters, and mailed the same to 23 chapters. The committee is eager to receive the
remaining documents by the June 1st deadline in time for the planned June work ses-
sion. The committee graciously thanks Beta Delta, Beta Pi, and Gamma Nu for grant-
ing permission to share their chapter rules.
With the assistance of state officers and state chairmen, all revisions to the Manu-
al of Policies and Procedures of Alpha Delta State are expected by June 1st, which will
allow the committee necessary time to format into a draft copy, which committee
member Diana Kirkpatrick has generously volunteered to type. Past State President,
Florence Woodward, has graciously agreed to thoroughly read the first draft. Much
work remains to deliver a final draft in time for the October Executive Board Meeting.
The committee is indebted to the tedious effort of all chapters, state officers and
state chairmen for sharing skills, talents and diligence necessary to this task.

One Scholarship
Recipient Named It was the honor of the Scholarship and
Grants committee to award the Annie
Web Blanton Scholarship at the 2014
Alpha Delta State Convention. Annie
Webb Blanton was the first President of
Delta Kappa Gamma, the first female
State Superintendent of Education, and
the first female to be elected to public
office in the state of Texas. She had
strong ties in Ohio. One of her students,
Margaret L. White, became the first Pres-
ident of Alpha Delta State in 1938. As a
recipient of this scholarship, our winner
will share a part of their legacy. The com-
mittee is pleased to congratulate the 2014
recipient, Julie Willoughby.
Julie Willoughby is a member of the
Beta Upsilon Chapter. She is an elemen-
tary principal in the Urbana City Schools.
References speak to Jennifer’s exception-
al leadership characteristics and dedica-
tion to education. She and her two daugh-
ters are all presently attending college.
Julie received her undergraduate degree
in education from The Ohio State Univer-
sity, her Master’s degree in Educational
Leadership from Bowling Green State
University and is currently pursuing her
doctorate degree from Concordia of Chi-
cago.
Julie will be researching the use of
teacher-based teams as the focus of her
dissertation. This scholarship will go to-
ward tuition for the research and disserta-
tion hours required to complete her de-
gree. This year’s award is in the amount
of $5,000.

The Communications/Publicity Committee awarded sixty certificates recognizing
chapter newsletters as publications following the guidelines of Alpha Delta State and
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The certificates and the newsletter
assessment checklists were included in the Chapter Presidents’ convention packets or
mailed to those not attending convention. It is hoped that the checklist will encourage
chapters to improve communication and adhere to guidelines, especially those con-
cerning copyright laws. The committee will be reviewing the checklist to establish a
more concise rubric. Please remember to include the chapter name in the subject line
when emailing newsletters to The Voice Editor and Communications Chairman.
Congratulations to the following chapters who received certificates: Alpha, Gam-
ma, Delta, Theta, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Chi and Omega.

The World Fellowship Committee would like to thank all of the Alpha Delta State
members who stopped by our display table at the State Convention. We were happy to
collect many wonderful ideas to distribute to the new chapter presidents next fall. It is
obvious that Alpha Delta State members support World Fellowships for women educa-
tors from other countries to study in the United States and Canada.
We were happy to give the gift baskets at our display to the following ladies: Eliz-
abeth Biglin, Gamma; Joanne Katonak, Gamma; Norma Kirby, Alpha Delta and Karla
Leighte, Delta Delta. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the convention next
April.

It’s Really Not a JUNGLE Out There! The State Leadership Development Team is planning three one day training sessions
for 2014-2016 Chapter Presidents and their Leadership Team. It is vitally important
that the president, and hopefully other officers, will attend one of these sessions.
Although the workshops are scheduled in three different locations in the state, you
select the location or the date that is most convenient for you and attend only one one-
day session. Additional information is on the registration form in this newsletter.

Thu Hoan Do, A. Margaret Boyd recipient from Viet Nam, sent a heartfelt letter, po-
em, and thank you to her Alpha Delta State sisters. All were shared at the 2014 state
convention. She was very sorry that she could not attend the 2014 State Convention
because her classes coincided with the convention dates. Her thoughts embody the
essence of Delta Kappa Gamma, and will make you proud to be a member.
She wrote: I would love to express my heartfelt thanks to all my DKG sisters, who,
with their warm hearts, enabled an international student to have a life-transforming
educational experience in America. A special thanks to sisters who have unfailingly
sent me lovely cards since I first came to O.U., asked with care how I am dealing with
the wintry weather, and sent me cards even though I have not yet had the chance to
meet them in person. The cards now pile up to the size of my Oxford English diction-
ary and I will take them all with me back to Vietnam this May.
I have made a little poem. It does not rhyme very well, but the first letters of every
line make up “DKG sisters”
Delta Kappa Gamma sisters
Knowledge creating, transmitting and sharing
Growth of young generations we nurture
Solidarity and commitment
Internationally connecting
Society of faith and trust
Traditions of seventy-six years
Educators we are
Relentlessly pursuing excellence
Strong we stay, forever and always.
I am graduating early in May and will depart one week after that. My farewell to
all DKG sister friends, who have made my studies in the States a wonderful choice. I
wish you all a satisfactory teaching career and a happy life
All the best, Thu Hoan Do
Thu Hoan will be receiving a special award at graduation. She was voted by her peers
as being one of the outstanding scholars at Ohio University. This is another example
that demonstrates how our work for Alpha Delta State makes a difference!

It is a great pleasure to inform membership of the names of the recipients of the Esther
H. Strickland Student Teaching Grant from Alpha Delta State (Ohio). One of the many
purposes of the society is to encourage and honor teachers who have given evidence of
potential for distinctive service in any field of education. These student teaching grants
are for outstanding college seniors in education who attend a state supported college or
university.
The Esther H. Strickland grants offer $1,000 in financial assistance to selected
students who will be engaged in the pre-service teaching experience during the coming
academic year. The recipients are selected based on merit and need. Students provide
details on grade point average, college activities, achievements, professional affilia-
tions and civic contributions. They also provide a personal narrative stating why they
wish to become a teacher and why they chose their particular field of study.
This year, there were 51 worthy applicants and TEN grants were funded. These
grants are made possible through member contributions. Several chapters and a few
individuals have already contributed this year. Through leadership and support, Alpha
Delta State provides outstanding future teachers vital assistance. Through generosity
this past year, awards were gifted to the following young people:
Chelsea Davis, Cleveland State University; Lane Forthofer, Kent State University;
Elizabeth Herzog and Michelle Steinberg, Miami University; Stephanie Cleland and
Ashley Gilley, Shawnee State University; Tracey Bowman, Marissa Hirsch and Kait-
lyn McCollin, University of Akron and Shannon McBride from Youngstown State
University. Congratulations to these exceptional future teachers and a thank you to
members for your support that makes these grants possible.

International Headquarters announced
that Nancy K. Vavul, Pi chapter, is rep-
resenting Ohio in the Society’s online
gallery for the arts and humanities. Her
oil painting, Five Giraffes and her poem,
“Mother’s Scrapbook” were selected for
the May addition to the Gallery.
To the 21 first-time attendees at the
2014 Alpha Delta State Convention! Go
back to your chapters and encourage
more to attend next year.
Red Roses Earned The Scholarship Committee would like to first thank chapters for the excellent 2014
reports; a total of 76 were received. Many chapters shared their local initiatives like
that of Alpha Delta Chapter that offers grants to early career educators for classroom
projects or for workshop registration fees or Alpha Nu’s grants to students teachers
who attend Ohio University–Lancaster and graduated from Fairfield County High
School or Gamma Iota’s $1,500 scholarship to college sophomore or junior education
students from their chapter’s membership area. There are others like Delta Alpha, Del-
ta Epsilon and many more that have great local efforts to encourage women educators
to grow personally and professionally. The committee would like to commend and
encourage your continued local chapter scholarship programs. Great work!
The annual reports also conveyed a consensus that the Alpha Delta State and The
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International websites are providing comprehensive and
essential scholarship information for all our members. All scholarship and student
teacher grant information has been updated on the Alpha Delta State’s website with the
idea of providing members easy access to these resources. If you attended the state
convention you may have received a postcard with QR codes that will take you directly
to the Alpha Delta State and International Scholarship Committee pages. There you
will find brochures, lists and descriptions of the scholarships available and scholarship
applications for your future use. You can even find information recognizing previous
recipients.
Also, several chapters mentioned in their reports that they have former scholarship
recipients speak at their meetings. They seem to feel this works well to inspire the
membership to apply. So, the Scholarship Committee recommends that when making
plans for next years’ meetings, have your program or scholarship committee consider
inviting a previous recipient to speak at a meeting to aid in encouraging others to apply
for the variety of opportunities available at the local, state and international levels.
Most importantly, do not assume everyone is aware of the scholarships available.
We feel it is essential for chapter presidents or scholarship committees to provide liter-
ature and links to all chapter members. Your support is vital to the success of our state
and international scholarship programs. There are funds available to help us grow per-
sonally and professionally. This will ultimately provide improved teaching and learn-
ing in our schools, which we all desire. Utilize these resources to continue to excel as
the teacher leaders that you are.
This year, there were very few applicants for the Alpha Delta State scholarships
but a hearty response to the Esther H. Strickland Student Teacher Grant for College
Seniors. The results of our Scholarship and Grants Committee award meeting were
announced at the convention. Look for separate articles recognizing the very deserving
recipients.

Recipients of awards granted in February 2014 by the Board of Trustees of the ΔΚΓ
Educational Foundation were recognized at the General Session of the 2014 Alpha
Delta State Convention. Melodie McGee, Gamma Nu Chapter, Columbus, was award-
ed a grant renewal of $945.00 for her project, “My Second Time Around, An Adult
Learner’s Mathematical Journey Continues.” This project targets the urban adult edu-
cation student population. These individuals are returning to school to improve litera-
cy/mathematical skills as well as to receive an opportunity to earn a G.E.D. certificate.
A grant renewal of $1,500 was awarded to Barbara Cleveland, Gamma Nu Chapter,
for her project, “Math Discovery’s At Home Math Talk Program.” This project in-
volves the creation of math clubs for “At Risk/Homeless” students in grades K-5 at the
Homeless Families Foundation’s Dowd Education Center in Columbus. Gamma Nu
Chapter has supported this project for the past 20 years. Melodie and Barbara will be
presenting a workshop this summer in Indianapolis at the International Convention
concerning their projects. Alpha Delta State is probably the only State Organization of
the Society to have mother and daughter recipients of Foundation awards as Barbara is
the mother of Melodie McGee.
A Lucile Cornetet Professional Development Award of $1,158 was received by a
non-member, Casey Smith of Akron, to attend the National Kindergarten Conference.
Members and non-members are eligible to receive this award.
In February of 2014, twenty-seven (27) projects and renewals totaling $99,830
and sixteen (16) Lucile Cornetet Awards for Professional Development totaling
$18,440 were granted by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. In existence since 1964,
The Foundation has granted approximately $4,500,000 to encourage standards of ex-
cellence in education; provide grants for women scholars to carry out study and re-
search; and assist and cooperate with schools, colleges, universities and other persons,
organizations, trust funds or foundations in the support, encouragement, and improve-
ment of education.
Alpha Delta State congratulates these recipients and wishes them great success
with their individual projects.

The Kaleidoscope was dispensing colorful programs to everyone at the Educational
Excellence Committee’s workshop at the state convention. A wonderful group partici-
pated in discussions on how EEC works within chapters. Many questions were an-
swered about the materials that were distributed. Programs from all the chapters were
distributed under each of the committee’s three goals. After each program title, the
name of the chapter that presented the program at their meetings was designated.
Please contact those particular chapters to find out more about what went into these
programs.
Networking among the chapters will create a real BUZZ about our Society in
Ohio. Many of these same materials will be shared with the leadership teams at the
summer workshops in June. The news about EEC will be spread to everyone. Thank
you to all the chapter chairmen who completed their state reports.

Those who attended Pat Cermak’s workshop, Bells, Bells, Bells, were amazed at the
wealth of information at her fingertips on the subject. Here are just a few of the high-
lights from her presentation.
Throughout the history of mankind, bells have been used for many different pur-
poses. Perhaps the use most think of first is the pealing of bells in a church tower, bet-
ter known as a carillon. Pat’s home church, The Church of the Savior, in Cleveland
Heights, has a carillon that is one of the largest in the country. A carillon is also the
largest musical instrument.
As Americans, we all know about our Liberty Bell that cracked when it was rung
to signal our independence from England in 1776 in Philadelphia. Other uses for bells
are for warning of danger, calling people to meetings and telling time. When you con-
sider all the times we depend on bells throughout our day, you realize we would be
lost without them!
The earliest record of a bell in an area that is now the United States is 1702. This
bell was in Christ Church Hospital in Philadelphia.
The largest bell in the world is in Russia. It was cast in 1733 and measures 272”
across at the bottom. Unfortunately, when they first tried to ring it, it cracked and has
never been heard.
Here is a trivia tidbit for us Buckeyes: Cincinnati, Ohio has the only company in
the U.S. that repairs carillon bells!
White Chapel Hand bells are some of the best and it is customary to wear white
gloves when performing with hand bells..
Pat brought about 30 bells from her collection of 300 to the workshop. She ex-
plained the uses of all the bells she brought with her. Her life-long interest in bells was
quite evident as she conducted her workshop. All those that attended were enriched by
