Dear Catholic Women of the Council, friends and benefactors – I want to wish all of you a Happy Easter and glorious Easter season. As a community of faith, we profess that Jesus is risen from the dead. As one looks at our country and world today, one sees destruction, depression and death. We as a church stand for exactly the opposite. I am happy to say that I have witnessed so many women in the council who bring life, hope and creative building in so many peoples’ lives. I am proud to be a part of an organization that goes against our culture and brings a deep meaning in peoples’ lives.

Many of us witnessed the ordination of Bishop James Powers. We waited a long time for the selection of a Bishop for the Diocese of Superior. The Council of Catholic Women offer prayers and show support to our newly ordained Bishop for the Diocese of Superior. Holding the office of bishop today is a difficult task. Our diocese today faces many daunting challenges. Bishop Powers will be forced to make some very serious and difficult decisions. My prayer for Bishop Powers is that he will be given a spirit of wisdom to make decisions that will be positive for the build-up of the church in Northern Wisconsin. With the support of Bishop Powers and the hard work and dedication of the Council of Catholic Women, may the Diocese of Superior grow in grace and be a witness to Christ’s resurrection in our world today. We are experiencing many changes in our lives. The season is changing from winter to spring. Our country is experiencing a political change that is reacting to the anger of the American people. Our diocese is going through a change with a new bishop. In the midst of change, our hope in a God who loves us remains constant. Let us hold fast to that hope in the days ahead. May God Bless you always. As ever –

Fr. Gerard Willger

National Council of Catholic Women Province of Milwaukee

A/DCCW Milwaukee Green Bay La Crosse Madison Superior

Province of Milwaukee-Lucille Brandner Director

As Director of the Province of Milwaukee, I had the opportunity to attend my first NCCW Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. on January 23rd and 24th, 2016. We arrived in DC on Thursday afternoon, January 21st after an interesting flight. We immediately walked to the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception where we attended the Solemn Opening Mass for the 2016 National Prayer Vigil for Life. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York and Chairman

of the USCCB's Committee on Pro-Life Activities, was the principal celebrant and homilist. It is so heartwarming to see the number of enthusiastic young people and have the opportunity to talk to some of them. If only the media would report the good in the world instead of focusing only on what they feel is “sensational”. On Friday January 22nd we took part in the March for Life 2016 just before “Jonas” (fourth worst storm in DC) started. On Saturday and Sunday, we were able to watch the historic snowstorm from inside the retreat house

during our board meetings. Total snow reported was 17.8 inches at Reagan airport. Some areas received more. Now we are already in our first full week of Lent. Each year as Lent approaches we are faced with the “What Will I Give Up This Lent” thoughts. Maybe it isn’t so much what we should give up as it is what we should be doing. All of our Lenten plans begin with prayer. Remember the strict rules of fasting and abstinence we had many years ago? The church now only highlights these regulations for Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the other Fridays during Lent. By declaring this year “The Year of Mercy” Pope Francis hopes that each of us will not only realize the abundant mercy and love God has for us, but that we extend that mercy to others. He is asking us to open our eyes to see the misery in the world and realize that it is up to us to help. The Works of Mercy give us the way to measure if we have been living as disciples of Christ. The Corporal Works of Mercy are ways to be charitable to the bodily needs of our neighbors. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are the ways we care for their spiritual needs. NCCW programs give us guidelines to help us carry out our works of mercy. Programs such as Spiritual Adoption of the Unborn, Women Healing the Wounds, Mary’s Mantle; and new programs being developed on Human Trafficking, Immigration, and Respite. The NCCW convention this year is at the Indianapolis Marriott downtown on September 7-10, 2016. Registration remains at only $320.00 this year. Registration and hotel reservations can be made soon. Keep watching the website http://www.nccw.org for details. Bus transportation is being researched.

I received a letter and picture from St. Francis of Assisi. – Fifield, Wisconsin Our St. Francis of Assisi Altar Sodality would like to begin the year 2016 with being added to the SDCCW website. We have no pictures of our activities but I have included a picture of our beautiful altar and Pastor Father Shaji. On February 14th, the ladies of St. Francis and the Covenant Church were guests of the Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship for a wonderful lunch and fun day of games and visiting. What a great way to join together for love and friendship. February 19th and March 4th, we will have a Lenten Soup supper after the Stations. All members of our cluster of Park Falls, Butternut and Fifield are invited.

We have acquired many paintings and pictures of former Priests and Bishops that hang in our church basement. Our project was to put all information on the back of these pictures for future parishioners to remember. We have also started a folder of all our activities for future info and a little history.

Future Projects are:

Co-Host the March 2017 Women’s World Day of Prayer with the Congregational Women’s Fellowship of

Fifield.

Each year we have a group resolution for the new year. This year we will try to be more aware of the

people around us. Why is a loud person suddenly quiet? When you ask “How are you?”, do they say

“fine” or “FINE”?Is a neat person turning sloppy? Why? Take time to listen and find out.

On Saturday April 30th, St. Francis is to sponsor the SCDCCW Board Meeting. Because we are not

handicap accessible this may have to be changed to another location. (check with Donna Dowden for

confirmation)

On Saturday July 9th, the Altar Sodality will hold a Bake Sale at Movrich Park for the Fifield Community

picnic. We will also have a Christmas in July table. This is our summer fundraiser. Any items leftover are

donated to St. Anthony’s pre-school sale in August. Most proceeds are returned to area charities.

A Message from the President Gayle Johnson

Welcome Spring! Does the budding of the trees, the maple sap running and the snow melting bring your council of Catholic women to rebirth? With the warmer weather activity within SDCCW picks up. South Central’s Spring Board meeting April 23rd in Fifield; Marian Day of Spirituality May 7th in Cameron at St. Peter’s (registration & agenda in newsletter); South West Deanery meeting, May 14th at St. Boniface in Chetek; and our 66th SDCCW Annual Convention June 13 & 14th in Hayward at St. Joseph’s; (agenda & registration in newsletter), all these are important dates to place on your calendar.

It is hoped that many of the women I greeted at the wonderful 6 parish cluster “Winter Gathering” at the supper club near Bruce will attend some of the above meetings. It was a good time, eating, sharing stories and listening to the two speakers. Our own Evelyn Lompa on NCCW, and Chris Newkirk on “The Importance of Women in the Church”. This cluster group, led by Our Lady of Sorrows PCCW is a great example of a parish Women Council rebirth. Remember “a Little Taste of Heaven” NCCW’s cookbook from 2003? It is being updated. You can send new recipes in. New cookbooks can be ordered for $25.00 or you can purchase additional pages for $8.00 to be inserted in the original book. See Gayle Johnson PMCCW Treasurer or Lucille Brandner PMCCW Director if interested in ordering either. With our work with New Evangelization, and hoping the season of Lent was a good time to offer adult education, My parish (St. Peter’s in Winter, WI) and I attempted offering a video DVD series entitled “Decision Point”. Its purpose was to energize our church and inspire people to rediscover the genius of Catholicism. We placed an advertisement in the local paper for two weeks and in the cluster bulletin. No one returned calls, so we decided not to proceed, maybe next year? To attend or not attend the NCCW Convention in Indianapolis Indiana? Have you made a commitment yet? A bus with pickup at 3 or 4 places is being worked on. Eleven members attended last year’s Florida site, can we hope for 15 attendees this year? See Mark Your Calendar later in the newsletter for Information!!

As your President, I wrote a letter of request supporting the idea that National should hold the 2020, Convention in Milwaukee WI. The 2020 convention will mark the 100th year of the National Council of Catholic Women. To achieve this goal we (SDCCW) will need to budget wisely and fund raise to help host this great possibility. It would involve a bit of work, but would be a nice feather in our hat. God Bless you and your Family with an abundance of Easter Joy. I look forward to seeing each and every one of the great Women of the Superior Diocese at the upcoming Marian Day, May 7th in Cameron WI.

A Message from the President-Elect

Barbara Gagliardi

Northwest Deanery Visit This October, I made the trip to visit the women and priests of the Northwest Deanery. I made it to 14 out of the 15 churches and met every priest. The women are vibrant and active, working well with their priests to meet the needs of the parish and communities. It was an honor to see the priests living out the words of Pope Francis when he called on them to serve their flock by being “shepherds living with the smell of the sheep.”

We became aware of a large group of women in the Superior area who are members of the Catholic Daughters of America rather than being affiliated with the CCW. Here are a few highlights from the trip:

President Barb Ailport leading the women at St. Joseph in Shell Lake

In the Solon Springs area, on my right is President of St. Mary, Betty Glaser

Visited the Webster cluster and attended a dinner for the elderly with Father Mike Tupa, who baked oatmeal cookies for the meal

Had mass and visited with new priest Fr. Laski, who is teaching Theology on Tap at UW-Superior and teaching at the Cathedral school

A Message from the Secretary

Michelle Rochel

Dear Jesus, Thank you for being so patient with us when we sin against you. As we meditate on your passion, help us to learn from the patience you had for those who crucified you. Help us to be patient with the people who annoy us, or misunderstood us, or hurt us in any way. Help us to pray for them and their journey toward you. We ask through your mother. Amen ~ credit given to Loved Forever: A Guide to Living the Year of Mercy. This prayer came to me when I needed it most. Rather than getting caught up in

someone else's negative attitude which may annoy us, choose to pray for them on their journey toward God.

A Message from the Treasurer

Sharon Thomas

As treasurer of SDCCW I am always glad to report that the status of our

treasury is great! And it is. We are seeing more women’s groups of our Diocese

joining and becoming affiliates. That means that these women are going to be

receiving news from all over, not just our Diocese of Superior, of what is

happening in our Catholic faith. It is a real sisterhood and they are a part of it.

If your parish women’s group is not a part of SDCCW, please ask your

president about joining.

Our Marian Day is May 7th and the registration form is in the newsletter. Please feel free to copy it off and bring friends with you! It will be a great day. The Diocesan Chorale will be singing at Mass. Where else can you have a day of food, friends and learning more about our faith for $15.00? Also think about making plans to attend our yearly convention. This year it is in Hayward. It is June 13

and 14. The form is enclosed too. If you can’t make an overnight of it and attend the banquet, give

thought to attending the 14th and listening to our speakers, have lunch and look at our informational

tables. Our Pax Christi winner as well as our two scholarship winners will be announced. Hope to see

you at these events.

A Message from the SISTERS’ FORUM

Sr. Cecilia Fandel

March 8 was International Women’s Day. The slogan for this year is “The rising of the women is the rising of us all.” So very true. When women are respected, and recognized for their gifts and what they have contributed to the advancement of peoples, everyone benefits. This week, March 8-14, was also National Catholic Sisters Week. This is what Pope Francis had to say recently: “What would happen if there were no nuns? No nuns in hospitals, in missions, in charitable institutions, in schools… Can you even imagine a church without nuns? No it is unthinkable. They are a gift, the leaven that carries the message of Christ. These women are great!”

Currently I am reading the book “Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America” by John J. Fialka. I stand in awe and am completely overwhelmed by what our early sisters contributed to the making of America, especially the Hospital system, the School system, in the Native American and African Americans ministries. I just finished the chapter on what they did during the Civil War. It is so unbelievable. Since Vatican II the sisters turned over their institutions to competent and Lay People, and turned to address other pressing social needs – immigration, systemic poverty, inequality, etc. I will talk more about that in the next issue of the newsletter. In the meantime, if you want to beupdated on Sisters today, just google a new website “Global Sisters Report”. You can keep in touch with what Sisters are doing around the globe. I will talk more about the Sisters in our Diocese’s new thrust in ministry. God bless you all. Sr. Cecilia Fandel

SPIRITUALITY COMMISSION - LEGISLATION Gayle Johnson

1. Although it is a secular holiday, marking Earth Day is a good opportunity for people of faith to reflect together on why we care for Creation, and how we can take action. Catholic Climate Covenant is producing a program guide for Earth Day 2016 (April 22nd). The 60 minute program will include a video, and a discussion. Sign up at [email protected]. Maybe your CCD teachers will use this info, or the local 4-H Club. Please share it.

2. April 5th- right after you receive this e-mailed newsletter - Is primary election day. The Presidential

primary, who could miss all that noise on TV? But beside that, there are local School Board candidate's and County Supervisor positions.

So, Please remember to "Get out the Vote"

SPIRITUALITY COMMISSION - CHURCH

Karen Firnstahl

Spring is almost here can’t wait for summer. Then our convention in Hayward, hope to see all of you there. We need to do a lot of praying for the Catholic Church, the world and our youth to keep going to church. So many of our Catholics are falling away from the church. So many Catholics are getting married out of the church. All the war going on in this world really needs our prayers. So please keep praying to try and turn things around. This is from Pope Francis Prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ

You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father. And have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money: The adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things: Made Peter weep after his betrayal, And assured paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father; Of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: Let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified, You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness In order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: Let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, So that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, And your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, mat bring good news to the poor: Proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Mary Werner

Mary Jane Morancyk Hennessy Scholarship Our 2016 Scholarship search is underway. Recently I sent out 2 applications to a mother and daughter. Good luck to both of them. I hope to see more nontraditional students applying for the scholarship like this mother returning to school for her bachelor’s degree. Deadline for application is April 15th. What about Allison and Hannah from last year?

Page 11: The Voice of Catholic Women - WordPress.com · 2016-03-20 · 1 The Voice of Catholic Women Superior Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Spring Newsletter March 2016 Sowers of Hope

Allison is finding classes time consuming but loving it. This past August she traveled to Nicaragua with Engineers without Borders working on a water distribution system for the community of Las Macias. She serves as President for the organization – congratulation to her. Weekends she finds some time to snowshoe and continues to play with the choirs at Menomonie and Phillips when she is home. She thanks the SDCCW for their generous contribution toward her education. Hannah now a junior at DePaul University works as a full-time intern at Grant Thornton Accounting Firm. After graduation next year she hopes to receive a full time offer from this company. Hannah extends a thank you for the scholarship so she can continue her studies at DePaul. She appreciates the efforts put forward by the SDCCW. Saturday February 27th my sister and I traveled to Altoona for the LDCCW “Embracing your Call to Holiness” conference. Keynote speaker was Judy Hehr and I understand she is to speak at the National Convention this year. We were both inspired by her morning and afternoon talks addressing her journey from slave to servant and her ability to forgive. Wonderful day for sisterhood!

LEADERSHIP COMMISSION - ORGANIZATION

Evelyn Lompa

“Are You a Leader”?

We often think of a leader as a person who has been appointed, elected, or who has

assumed a position of authority at the request of the members of a group or an

organization. We expect the leader to be committed to the mission of the

organization. We expect the leader to have a vision that provides the route to

success. We expect the leader to wield influence. We expect the leader to help

others achieve a common goal through good communication skills. We expect the

leader to empower the members to be the best they can be.

If you are reading this article, the answer should be YES! Sometimes we deny being a leader, but we all lead at

some points in our lives. We are leaders if we are a part of a family, a parish community, a workplace, or an

organization such as the Council of Catholic Women. We are leaders if we are committed to various groups in

our lives. We are leaders if we have a vision of providing service in our community. We are leaders if we have

influence upon others. When you offer your unique talents to improve life of the aforementioned groups, you

are a leader.

When you offer your vision of the future and help others to obtain it, you are a leader. When you facilitate

communication between fellow members, you are a leader. Some people lead large groups, some people

provide leadership skills to small groups, but the definition of a leader does not rely on the size of the group. To

lead is to help others converge on the same road in fulfilling a goal or mission.

When you think of someone being a leader, do you include yourself? The answer should be a resounding YES!! May Our Lady of Good Counsel Continue to Guide us.

SERVICE COMMISSION – FAMILY, COMMUNITY & INTERNATIONAL Jane Schiszik and Mary Arnold Co-Chairs

The Jubilee Year of Mercy and the Service Commission

On one of my recent travels, I witnessed the sheer beauty and splendor of a sunrise! God has graced our lives with so many awesome sights. Viewing the sunrise gave me an entirely new perspective on my day. By now, many of you are well into your Lenten journeys and hopefully finding ways to renew your relationship with God. Letting go of the things in our everyday lives that distract our view, obstruct our path and cause us to lose our way in experiencing the mercy and fullness of God’s love for us.

Many of you are also aware of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which started December 8, 2015, and continues through November 20, 2016. As we continue our journey into the holy year we have many opportunities to embrace God’s mercy and be a living witness of God’s mercy towards others. Practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy allows us to live our Catholic faith and ties directly into the Service Commission. Look over the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and you can surely see the connection. Corporal Works of Mercy Spiritual Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Counsel the doubtful Give drink to the thirsty Instruct the ignorant Clothe the naked Admonish the sinners Welcome the stranger Comfort the afflicted Heal the sick Forgive offences Visit the imprisoned Bear patiently those who do us ill Bury the dead Pray for the living and the dead Many of you are probably thinking, being of service to and for others is what Catholic women are all about. While that is certainly true, this year I encourage you to change your focus, step out of your comfort zone and try a different act of mercy to do. Really focus on the people or persons you are serving and not just performing the task. Do something more to show your mercy and love for one another. Look for the presence of Christ himself in the people you are serving. A Million Works of Mercy I’m also encouraging you, to take part in Jane Carter’s, A Million Works of Mercy! You can read more about this project in the March Connect. On April 3, 2016, the Feast of Divine Mercy, members of the National Council of Catholic Women will begin counting every work of mercy performed. The works of mercy will be added up, from one to one thousand until the goal of one million acts of mercy is done before the end of the Jubilee Year on November 20 th, the Feast of Christ the King. Your acts of mercy can be collected and tallied on the form that can be down loaded by clicking on the NCCW Website reference in Jane Carter’s article in the March Connect. Monthly add up the total acts of mercy performed by you or your group and either email Jane the results at [email protected] or send her the results at this address: Jane Carter, P.O. Box 4756, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

Nancy Kokstis

Battleground at Death's Door A while back we had an article in our local paper. “Compassionate Care bill introduces gentler way to die.” I read it almost with disbelief. Found out these were nice words for a devious agenda; the agenda of Satan's culture of death. We are all quite familiar with his words to describe the torture and murder of babies in the womb: “women's choice;” “women's reproductive health care rights,” and those who don't agree with this devilish agenda are having a “war on women.”

Did you know there are only 5 states where you can “die with dignity?” So says WI Senator Bewley; she noted that with a compassionate care bill there is a “new freedom of choice.” Recognize the words??? You remember the words of the prayer where we ask St. Michael, “Cast into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.” He's prowling a lot these days promoting the Culture of Death. With assisted suicide, he plans to grab those souls right out of God's hand for all eternity. “Got another one away from you God. Ha Ha.” He wants to make assisted suicide legal in all states, just like Abortion via Roe vs Wade. And of course it will be called, “compassionate,” “caring,” and “dying with dignity.” There is also POLST, Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment. Life sustaining treatment sounds good to me, so why are the Catholic Medical Association, and USCCB opposed to it? Well again, it's Satan's rhetoric for doctors deciding when you should die. Today, it is often “bottom line” economics. Your life might not be cost effective anymore, so get over it. A doctor decides who is terminal. Advocates for legalized assisted suicide and euthanasia promote the illusion that we can “help” those in need by killing them or assisting them in killing themselves. You may be talked into assisted suicide, the easier, softer way to put your soul in jeopardy. As Catholics, we believe in respecting life from conception until natural death because God is the Author of Life. It was Almighty God who created us for His purpose; it was He who formed us in our mother’s womb and called us by name before we were born. He is the Way the Truth and the Life. Today we are to believe it is we who are gods, so who lives and dies is up to us. It is our opinion and feelings that count, not God's law. So what do we do? First we pray. Next, we pray some more. We need to learn and understand Church Teaching in regard to end of life care. Stay informed and vigilant, stand up and share God's truth to counteract the devils rhetoric. On April 30, we are going to have Matt Sande, the legislative director of Pro Life WI, speak to us on "Upholding Human Dignity at the End of Life." The event will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Catawba from 1:00 -230pm. There will be a free will offering. Check the SDCCW.me website for additional information regarding registration and contact information. You can get a CATHOLIC Protective POA for Health Care on line from Pro Life WI.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Co-Chair Lucille Brandner

Happy Lent one and all! By now we are well on our way to either renewing or

realizing our Lenten resolutions. And we are looking forward to a beautiful

Easter Season that is coming to us early this year.

We will also be jumping into Spring; it is just around the corner. How about more

of us jumping right into a National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW)

Individual Membership! Individual Membership brings us together as Sisters in Christ with women all

across the country. NCCW membership give us an annual subscription to the quarterly Catholic Woman

magazine, annual subscription to the monthly NCCW Connect e-newsletter,

Spirituality, Leadership and Service opportunities, programs and resources.

NCCW was founded by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in

1920. NCCW has representation at the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering

which advocates Catholic views to Congress. NCCW is a founding member

and participant with the Religious Alliance Against Pornography.

Currently we have Forty-two (42) Individual Members of NCCW in the

Superior Diocese. We would love to welcome many new members during the

next few months. For those of us who are currently members, the ONE MEMBER, ONE CHANCE

membership challenge form can be used to sign up new members until May 15th. Each member you

sign up gives one additional chance to win a full registration, including banquet and hotel (up to 4 nights)

for the 2016 Convention in Indianapolis, IN. And if each of us (the thirty-seven members) signs up just

one new member, we would be at seventy-four members!!

On a recent report of membership received from NCCW, we find eighteen parishes listed as currently

holding affiliate memberships. We welcome all of the parishes who are not currently affiliated to

consider sending in your application form as soon as possible. If you do not have forms, email me at

[email protected] or call 715-748-4721 and I will get forms to you.

Dear Sisters in Council, each of us has received a great gift. We need to share the great gift of mercy

with others. We are part of an awesome God filled organization, the National Council of Catholic

Women, which empowers us to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. We need to become the Sowers

of Hope in today's world. Every day is a new opportunity to be washed in the water of baptism. Let

today, be the day, you ask another woman to accompany you on a journey which allows her to experience

this relationship between the Father and the Son. A journey that can be life changing, spiritually fulfilling,

directed by God and very much a part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The last paragraph was published in the March Connect in an article written by Jane Schiszik for the

Leadership Commission.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Co-Chair Jane Schizsik

Individual Membership in the National Council of Catholic Women

Membership, membership, membership! One sure way to grow your

membership is to talk about it. Because if you are not talking about it, chances

are, no one else is either.

For me, belonging to the National Council of Catholic Women as an Individual

Member is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Some of my

experiences with Council, have been life changing events for me.

About 20 years ago, there was a bulletin announcement of an upcoming church

ladies meeting. A little voice in my head told me I should check this out. At

the time in my life, I was working full time and had three school aged children at home. Plus, I had all

the other duties that working moms have the cooking, cleaning etc.

What I discovered at that first meeting and since was more than I ever expected. The more I listened, the

more I learned that these women do so much for their parish community and beyond. Our parish women

were affiliated with a deanery and a diocesan council of catholic women. We even had ties to the Province

of Milwaukee and the National Council of Catholic Women.

I learned of the struggles women in third world countries have with needing to walk miles to get water

for their families. Catholic Relief Service programs: Water for Life or the Madonna Plan were projects

the ladies of our parish were already involved with.

The program of Spiritual Adoption allowed me to pray for unborn children, to ask God to intercede in

the lives of those unborn children so they could experience life and love and lessen their threat of

abortion.

I also became aware of training and educational resources available for building strong foundations of

council women. Programs for conducting organized and effective meetings.

My prayer life improved through exposure to many and varied prayers. Prayers to Our Mother of Good

Counsel, prayers for vocations, for priests, for the military, and for the 40 Days for Life.

Relationships with other women in the Diocese of Superior and Province of Milwaukee increased my

awareness of other programs: the lollipop sucker campaign to help lick domestic violence and the white

ribbon against pornography campaign.

I have learned of other issues threatening women, and children: poverty, hunger, domestic violence and

human trafficking. The National Council of Catholic Women has programs to address many of these

issues. These programs give me the opportunity to do something to help these people, in addition to

praying for them. Plus, my efforts are united with women across the United States who are also involved

with these same programs.

Being an Individual Member of the NCCW, opens the door to so many opportunities to each and every

one of you. Never in my wildest dreams, did I think I would ever march down Pennsylvania Avenue in

Washington D.C. with thousands of others in the March for Life!

I’m so thankful the Holy Spirit was that little voice in my head that encouraged me to attend that first

meeting and did not allow me to find an excuse for not attending. So, if you are asked about becoming

an Individual Member, let go and let God guide your path. What is waiting for you is countless

opportunities for service, increased spirituality, and the development of lifelong friendships. It is as easy,

as saying, yes!

Jane Schiszik, SDCCW Membership Co-chair

Electronic Secretary & Web Design

Lucille Brandner

The Electronic Secretary is responsible for online communication to a large list of

women in our diocese of the newsletters, articles, and other information from the

diocesan president, NCCW officers, and other organizations such as Pro Life or the

USCCB just as examples.

It is interesting keeping up the electronic mailing lists. If anyone changes their

email address, it is very important to inform me or my replacement of that

change. If this is not done, you may no longer be receiving the information

you need for meetings, other functions of our council, and important messages

from our national organization.

Included in the Web design position is keeping up the website www.sdccw.me

and assisting others in signing in and using their personal pages on the NCCW

website www.nccw.org. If your parish or deanery has an event or information to share with others,

please email the information to me and it can be put on the website as a post that is seen my everyone

who opens our sdccw.me page.

NCCW WEBSITE:

If you use the internet, take the opportunity to use the NCCW website, www.nccw.org. You will find

current information on all current events and programs. Very soon the schedule, hotel information and

registration for the 2016 Convention at Indianapolis will be there.

You can sign in by clicking on Sign In at the top of the page. If you have never signed in before, enter

your email address as your Username. Since it is the first time signing in, click on the Forgot my

password just below the red box. Then follow the instructions to create a password and continue on with

the process. Once you have set up your account, each time you sign in you will simply enter your

username and password that was set us on the initial sign in. If you have problems with the sign in you

can call the NCCW office 800-506-9407 and one of the office staff will be happy to help you.

SOUTH CENTRAL DEANERY

Donna Dowden, President

Happy Spring!! We were given the challenge to each find one new member. Evangelizing in today’s culture is a challenge… The reality is that the majority of Catholic women are operating in two places at one time – the real world and the digital world – and she must keep up 24/7/365. She is busy! I am going to share a few tips that Marybeth Hicks shared in her keynote speech at our 2015 NCCW National Convention, September 10, 2015.

Here are tactics that Marybeth suggested to reach the busy women of today. -Make an announcement at the end of Mass – during that announcement ask every woman in church to pull out her smartphone, open her Facebook app, and follow your CCW Facebook page. Odds are you will capture her attention. - Use that Facebook page to evangelize more than advertise. Add quotes, memes, Bible verses, and inspiring photos. She will enjoy your page and follow you. (She might even see and share your occasional ads for upcoming events). - Focus efforts on a parish level – provide support for women – rather than asking them to support you. A busy mother might not be ready to attend a CCW meeting – not yet anyway. But she might go to an event sponsored by the CCW about keeping children safe by talking to teens about the dangers of porn. After that event she may be interested in joining the cause to help fight pornography. These are just a few tips that may help you in your search for new members. They are out there – we just need to find a way to reach them and to touch their hearts.

SOUTH WEST DEANERY

Sharon Kelly, President

Lori will provide an update on the Rice Lake shelter. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Spring Deanery Meeting – if you’d like

I also encourage you to consider attending our annual Marian Day event on Saturday, May 7th. The event is hosted this year by St. Peter’s Church in Cameron, WI. Another Marian Day event I just learned of takes place each year in August in Carthage, Missouri. This family-friendly event has welcomed visitors to the Carthage area since 1978. Estimated to be the largest North American religious pilgrimage, Marian Days brings thousands of Vietnamese Catholic families to Carthage to celebrate faith and fellowship in honor of the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, as well as in memory of their homeland across the Pacific. This year marks the 38th annual Marian Days. It is a pilgrimage of Vietnamese Catholics and their descendants done in honor of the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, as well as in memory of their homeland across the Pacific. The festival is highlighted by a huge outdoor Mass held on the grounds of the Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix. Marian Days brings an opportunity to share culture, faith and prosperity with thousands who pilgrimage to Carthage. Each year the community expands from a population of 14,500 to an estimated crowd of 60-80,000 new residents in the first weeks of August. What a wonderful way to display their on-going love. God’s Blessings on you all,

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

God of heavenly wisdom, you have given

us, Mary, Mother of Jesus, to be our

guide and counselor.

Grant that we may always seek her

motherly help in life and so enjoy her

blessed presence in the life to come.

O Mother of Good Counsel, Patroness of

the National Council of Catholic Women,

intercede for us, that we may be wise,

courageous and loving leaders of the

Church.

Help us dear Mother, to know the mind of Jesus, your son. May the Holy

Spirit fill us with reverence for God's creation and compassion for all

God's children. May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God

and may God's gifts of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness

of the world to come. Amen
