Shalom,
What a wonderful GALA we had! Honoring Fran Goldman, Immediate Past President. Thank you to Renee Gere and her committee for a great evening – good food, good music, good raffle, and good friends. We had two wonderful Seders led by Rabbi Adler and Cantor Beliniski. For the first Seder, we had 210 people and more than 150 the second night. Also, thank you Rita Erstein and Florence Ull for taking reservations and setting up the Seders. March was our last Lunch and Learn program for this season. Thank you Gladys Morse, Sylvia Eisner, Jerry Sacks, Sue Zucker, Allen and Bernice Parks for a great season. We look forward to November when the Lunch and Learn season starts again. Please note that Lunch and Learn will be moving to Thursdays next season. Over the past few months, attendance at Shabbat services has increased. Please join us any Friday night and/or Saturday morning to hear inspiring sermons by Rabbi Adler and melodic chanting by Cantor Beliniski. Friday night services begin at 7:30 pm and are followed by an Oneg Shabbat. Saturday morning services start at 8:45 am and are followed by a Kiddush. During the Oneg Shabbats and Kiddushes, you can have a nosh and an opportunity for you to socialize with old friends and new ones. See you in Temple.
Kol Tov.
The “Shechianu” blessing is well known to us as the bracha recited upon performing a religious act for the first time. Eating a new fruit, wearing a fresh outfit, celebrating the first day of a festival, and the like. However there is an application for the “Shechianu” that is little known, and fallen out of popular usage, yet for our congregation, it presents a cherished opportunity. The Babylonian Talmud, Berachot 58b, teaches that one who has not seen a good friend in a month, should recite “Shechianu” upon seeing them again. The purpose of this tradition is that an individual who’s presence brings us joy and who’s absence caused us pain, offers us the privilege to praise G-D for renewing our relationship. Here at Temple Anshei Shalom, this blessing is highly appropriate and meaningful. There are too many congregants that fall off the grid and are not heard from for weeks and weeks. It is difficult to know, who has been visiting loved ones up north, or who have been house-bound or worse. However, when they finally return to shul for a service or program, there is a spirit of gratitude manifested in the many people who missed them and who enjoy their company week after week. On almost every Shabbat, there is just such a return of a dear and cherished congregant. For the individual, there is the blessing of experiencing Divine healing working in their own body. For all of us there is also the blessing of feeling that a part of our shul family that has been missing, is back where they belong. For all of us, we experience a happy feeling that becomes concretized in that well-known blessing. So my friends, please know that we are lessened when you are away due to ill health or visits up north. When you return to us, you bring with you the bracha of your selves, a bracha we cherish and enjoy. Even though there are many of us at Anshei Shalom, each and every worshipper is a unique treasure that we need and appreciate. May the Almighty grant us a renewal to keep all of us together for many years to come.Amen

Shalom Chaverim By the time you get this issue we should be in the middle of Peseach. Nisan is really the first month of the year. In my opinion this is because we first became a nation when we were freed from bondage in Israel, in the month of Nisan. I have learned over the years that all Holidays are important even the so called lesser holidays like Hanukkah and Purim. The difference is that Peseach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Succoth are all mandated in the Torah, and the others are much later in time. Just to spend a minute on those lesser holidays, if it weren’t for the Macabees there wouldn’t be Judaism, as the Syrian Greeks wanted to eliminate us, and because of the timing, there would then be no Jewish Jesus, so no Christians and no Islam as it grew out of Judaism and Christianity. The same could be said of Purim since Queen Esther and her Uncle Mordechai also saved the Jews from annihilation. Getting back to Peseach, I have been told it is the Holiday that is celebrated by more Jewish Families than any other. Whether it is a traditional Seder that lasts long into the night or just a meal together, the family is together for a meal. For us it is a reunion with our children and grandchildren who stayed in New Jersey when we moved to Florida. None the less we have never missed a Seder in the 58 years we have been together. When we went to our first post in the Army it was just before Peseach and Joan contacted the Jewish Chaplin at
Fort Lewis who invited us to his house for both Seders and we had a community for the entire time we were in Tacoma. We had two social lives, one with the other officers in my unit and another, and much more comforting and vibrant, with the Jewish community of Fort Lewis Washington and McCord Air Force Base. Now we are part of this Chevrah at Anshei Shalom and again we feel at home. Our great congregation, our Rabbi Adler and his wonderful wife, Francine, and our Cantor César Beleniski draw us back every Shabbat to learn from Rabbi and thrill to Cantor’s voice. I go to morning minyan as often as I can, and it usually is 3 to 4 times a week, and I find it a wonderful learning experience. There is a great camaraderie among the minyaneers. You should try it sometime, “You’ll Like It”. Our temple has so much to offer, it is amazing. I am proud that the Ritual committee has a small part in what we offer, and proud to be part of it. Finally, I want to remind you that if you would like an Aliyah to remember a loved one who is no longer among us, to celebrate an important anniversary, such as a wedding, a bar or bat mitzvah, or a birthday, all you have to do is call me. I will do all that is in my power to satisfy your needs. The only problem is when there are too many on the same date. None the less I will still try to satisfy you.

I want to thank every one who worked on the MAN OF THE YEAR brunch honoring our past president, Irving Friedman. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and I am glad to see so many attending. The April 22nd brunch will have a double presentation. Dawn Guzzetta, Director of Sales and Marketing for the soon to be opening New Symphony at Delray Beach, will give a short talk about the symphony and will be followed by our main speaker, Maurizio Arenzon, a member of our Temple and Men’s Club whose topic will be about “ GROWING UP JEWISH IN ARGENTINA” during the Peron era and the hardships Jews suffered there. In 1922, directed by President Wilson, the League of Nations blocked Jews from coming to the states. In December 2018, the TAS MEN’s CLUB is sponsoring a Caribbean Cruise. Information can be found in the carousel. Please pick up a flyer. The raffle tickets are being sold as this is being read. Please make sure that your raffles tickets are turned in before the May 27th meeting. At that meeting, our speaker will be Dr. Gladys Morse, who holds a Masters and a Doctorate in Education. She will tell us how she and her husband founded a school to help special children with learning disabilities in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

The South Florida winter “social season” may be winding down but at Temple Anshei Shalom, our spring and summer season of fun is just heating up! Remember the Israeli live wire, Julietta Daniel who had us dancing in the aisles during—and after—her Anshei After Dark performance here last year? The adorable songstress will be back at TAS April 16 to help us celebrate Israel’s 70th Anniversary. The program kicks off at Noon with Rabbi Adler sharing a brief history of Israel and its achievements. Lunch will offer traditional Mideast favorites, including falafel, humus and salads. Then Julietta will entertain us with songs in Hebrew and English, local tunes from Israel and songs from Jewish liturgy. It’s sure to be a hand-clapping, foot-tapping tribute to Israel and those who sacrificed to make it a reality. Cost with lunch is $18 members, $23 non-members; without lunch, $5 members, $10 non-members. Reservations MUST be made by April 9 in the Ticket Office. Next, on Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m., sit back and enjoy the 60-member Club Singers. This full-harmony ensemble with a repertoire including jazz, show tunes, folk, ethnic songs and classics, never fails to delight. Tickets are $10 at the door. On May 13, the dynamic 17-member Fusion Band will wow us with original arrangements of favorites by artists like Burt Bacharach and Billy Joel, as well as big band classics of Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and more. New this year: The Fusion Band show is FREE FOR MEMBERS. Non-members, $10. In the midst of all this fun, please don’t forget that we’re launching a new Legacy Program to keep this amazing Temple alive and well far into the future. Our member Irwin Schultz, (561-414-9535) will be happy to explain how to include TAS in your estate planning. Thanks everyone, for pitching in to energize our fundraising efforts in so many different ways!
Cantor’s CornerCantor César Beleniski
Dear Friends, Very soon in July, I will have been at Temple Anshei Shalom for two years as a Cantor. It is a time in which, through the hand of Hashem, I have had a lot of happiness in my life as a person and as a Hazzan. I found a community full of energy, affection and examples of how to live my life from each of you. I’ve worked in different temples during all these years, with great satisfaction and success, but Temple Anshei Shalom has a very special meaning for me because it represents the image of my beloved parents and zedesand all the experiences of my childhood and youth. They taught me that a good man should be a ‘Mench’ , which means that we have to be a good Jew first and then we have to be a good person. I want to thank Rabbi Adler. He knows how to address me personally about the work I have to do in the Temple and he helps me when I ask for help. Also, I want to mention the collaboration of Cantor Wood when we have to work together to make a good team. The best and most exciting moment in the religious services is when we all sing together as if we were a beautiful. experienced choir. All this creates an environment of great energy, happiness and well-being for the good of all. The satisfaction of sharing these moments of singing together nourishes us with peace and spirituality and allows us to reach Hashem with our prayers. I thank all the members of the congregation for the kindness and warmth they show me. It is my wish that Hashem protect and accompany the entire community of Temple Anshei Shalom forever.
Shalom Ubracha, Nor Of Simchas

I Care...You Care...We All Care...
A few months ago I was honored to be asked by Fran Goldman to serve on the newly-formed “We All Care” committee. At our first meeting we were joined by Stacey Bar-Chaim from JFS. A number of opportunities to help our members were discussed, including rides to Shabbat services and visits or calls to those who are ill or recovering from illness or surgery. Fran gave each of us the name of a member on the MiShebrach list to contact. It is a very simple mitzvah to perform to reach out to someone and put a smile on their face. It is two-fold as it put a smile on my face when after a call I received this text:
“ Hi Barbara,Just a brief note to thank you so much for tonight’s call. It was the chicken soup I needed!! You are very warm and sweet, and I appreciate everything you said. My husband said to thank you for phoning as well.”
We just need to give from the heart and give of ourselves. Now I need to make my next call and put another smile on someone’s face.B’ShalomBarbara S Tobin-ForbushRabbi Adler and TAS are here for you...(561)495-1300
Letter to Men’s Club
The Men’s Club Shabbat service went over, almost without a hitch. Kudos came from everyone. For a primary effort, we were GOOD!I wish everyone who participated a hearty “ya’asher ko-ach”. However, I was greatly disappointed by the paucity of volunteers. Some honorees did double duty and for that, the Men’s Club Board and I are grateful. I know our membership consists of many people with much talent. I do not know every individual and their abilities. Therefore, it is incumbent on each and every member to contact me with his abilities and desires to participate next year so we can be BETTER. The Men’s Club desperately needs more exposure to the TAS membership. We are capable of doing much more for the benefit of this extraordinary congregation and positive exposure is essential to our success. If you know anyone who has an e-mail address who is not in our files, for the sake of easy communication, please let me know. It will not be broadcast to anyone. Hoping that all had a happy and ziesen Pesach,
Mitchel [email protected]

Life is not the amount of breaths you take it's the moments that take your breathe away....Hitch(2005) Words cannot express the overwhelming emotion I experienced, as I walked into the beautifully decorated ballroom the evening of the 2018 Gala dinner, and saw all our members, who came to celebrate the event with me and my family. While I am aware that not everyone who made a donation was present at the Gala, I appreciate the kindness and generosity you all exhibited, in one fashion or another. I would be remiss if I didn't offer due recognition to our congregants for their specific contributions, which helped enhance the success of the evening's affair. Kudos to Renee Gere and her committee for their hard work. It made the evening an event that will not be forgotten. Thank you to our house photographer, Paul Erstein, and his assistants, Paulette Ballin and Sheila Sreden, for capturing the joy on the faces of all who were present. Jan Schwartz, and her co-workers did a terrific job in obtaining the merchandise, and wrapping the baskets so beautifully for the Chinese auction. They have to be complimented for the additional dimension provided to the evening's entertainment. Times change, years go by, but memories remain. Thank you for making the evening a beautiful memory that will be cherished. Truly, a Night to Remember Toda Raba,Fran Goldman
Notes From the Editor
First, I would like to apologize, as Chairwoman of the Gala Committee, for omitting Arlene Shalek’s name from the Talmud Study Group. It was an oversight on my part. Second, because of issues with the Post Office, I am changing the deadline for getting information to me to be included in the Kol to the 10th of the month. I am hoping this alleviates the problem. There will be a May Kol and then a summer issue covering June, July and August.
Thank you, Renee S. Gere, editor

YOM HASHOA V’HAGVURAHolocaust Commemoration & Resistance Memorial Service
Thursday, April 12, at 2 p.m.Lester Schwartz
Please join us Thursday, April 12, to reverently recall the horrors of the Holocaust, to salute the brave survivors in our Temple family and to pledge, as always, “never again”. This touching, inspiring memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with a welcome from survivor and program co-chair Genia Kutner. She urges us all to “bring your friends, family and any survivors or children of survivors whom you know in the community. We once had 150 survivors at Temple Anshei Shalom but their numbers are fast diminishing. That is why it is critical that second and third generations attend--to learn, to understand and to help make sure the world will never forget.” The program is dedicated to the six million Jewish martyrs of the Holocaust, as well as the millions of victims of other faiths. Besides remarks from Rabbi Adler and TAS President Linda Cooper, we will hear from our featured guest speaker, Bradd Weinberg. Bradd is a former criminal defense attorney who, after 20 years of practice, switched careers to become a middle school social studies teacher, where he felt he could have a stronger social impact. He teaches young students at Carver Community Middle School in Delray Beach, with a strong curriculum focus on the Holocaust. To make his lessons more effective, Bradd attended a five-day seminar on Holocaust studies last year at Columbia University, presented by the Jewish Foundation of the Righteous (JFR). To make his Holocaust lessons even more authentic, Bradd became one of 11 middle and high school teachers from across the country to participate in the JFR’s European Study Program last summer, visiting Holocaust sites in Lithuania and Poland and meeting with internationally recognized Holocaust experts and historians. Needless to say, Bradd’s remarks will be articulate, well-researched and moving. A special candle lighting ceremony will be led by Ms. Shelly Lazarus, a child survivor, assisted by survivor Gerald Biegel. Attending survivors will be recognized by name and camp. Patriotic and partisan songs, both joyful and plaintive, will be sung by Cantors Cesar Beleniski and Max Rubin. Cantor Bill Wood will perform “I’d Like to Go Away Alone” with self-accompaniment on the piano. There will be responsive readings by Rabbi Lester Hering, Rabbi Raphael Miller and Rabbi Donald Crain and a free-verse poem with music by program co-chair, Lester Schwartz. The program will conclude with a procession to our outdoor Holocaust Memorial, with kaddish and Hatikvah led by the Cantors, followed by the blowing of the Shofar by Michael Silverman.

It is with great gratitude to Hashem that we reached the age of 90 years old. We never, never believed that we would make it after what we went through. It doesn’t mean that we don’t have the classical question, why? Why did it happen to us, Holocaust survivors. Or where was G-D. But, we are here with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, in spite of all our enemies! We are leading a respectful life, a spirtual life, with dignity, pride and love. Two Holocaust survivors, Jerry and I, thank Hashem for everything we achieved. It’s written in the book of Genesis, G-D said
åãáì úåéä íãàä áåú àìIt is not good for man to be alone, so, he created Eve and gave her to him. So, Genia found in Temple Anshei Shalom, Jerry and Jerry found Genia and we thank Hashem for the last three years. We wish everybody a healthy and happy, peaceful, loving life and let us continue to celebrate our birthdays for many more years to come. Halaway Amen! It is with great appreciation we thank all of you for the overwhelming love and affection with donations, cards, certificates, and bricks to honor our special birthday. We love you all.
With love,Genia Kutner and Jerry Beigel
Thank you for all the lovely cards, beautiful messages and warm wishes on our anniversary.

What Will Your Legacy Be? With a “will” there’s a way. In one way or another your life is rooted in our Shul. You have, through the years, supported our shut, but have you included Temple Anshei Shalom in your Will or Estate Plan? By leaving a Legacy, you will perpetuate the Jewish traditions you cherish. All of us, regardless of age or wealth, have the ability to leave a Legacy. Just think how any lives your gift will impact. Leaving a Legacy today assures a Jewish tomorrow. Please contact Irwin Schultz at 561.414.9535 so that we may show you how simple the process is.
