“The Voorman Prob-lem is a dark and play-ful little short which I hope connects with people in some small way.”

Mark Gilldirectors statement

I was pointed in the direction of the source material for this short (an excerpt from David Mitchell’s ‘num-ber9dream’) by a good friend who had enjoyed a film I made about two angels that are bored. He knew I’d be attracted to the dark undercur-rent in the story and its connection with religion, a sacred cow which I’ll never tire of prodding.

Adapting David’s material was a hugely enjoyable process and hav-ing Martin and Tom involved is tes-tament to what I’ve always believed: it’s all about the script. They were generous collaborators and helped take the film to another level.

I’ve always felt that comedy is a poor relation to drama when it comes to visual aesthetics so I’ve striven to make every scene as beautiful as possible. The Voorman Problem is a dark and playful little short which I hope connects with people in some small way.

Martin Freemandoctor williams

There was a time when Martin was most well known as Tim Canterbury from Ricky Gervais’ The Office but since then, his career has gone from strength to strength, featuring as the iconic Arthur Dent in Douglas Adams’ Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and recently winning a BAFTA for his per-formance as Dr. Watson in Sherlock.

His profile will undoubtedly rise even further with his lead role as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hob-bit, which is currently being shot and is scheduled for release in December 2012.

Tom Hollandermr. Voorman

One of Britain’s finest character actors, Tom has managed to sustain an unbroken career in stage, TV and film. In 1992 he won the Ian Charle-son Award for his Witwoud in The Way of the World at the Lyric Ham-mersmith. He’s played Saffy’s boy-friend in Absolutely Fabulous, King George V in The Lost Prince on the BBC, and more recently, the Duke of Windsor in Channel 4’s adaptation of

William Boyd’s Any Human Heart.

On film he has been a penniless aristo in Gosford Park, Lord Cutler Beckett in Pirates of the Caribbean, hapless minister Simon Foster in Armando Ianucci’s In The Loop and a cellist in Joe Wright’s The Soloist. Along with James Wood, he created and starred in Rev. as the unfortunate but sympathetic inner-city minister. The series won the BAFTA for best sitcom in 2011.

Simon GriffithsgoVernor Bentley

Working in the industry for just over 5 years Simon is a versatile actor who is equally at home on stage as he is in front of the lens. A small part in ITV’s Heartbeat led to him playing Mike in 25Gs with honlodge productions which in turn led to his appearance in The Voorman Problem.

Simon realises now that maybe ro-mantic leads are not within his expect-ed range but thoroughly enjoys getting to grips with character roles in films that interest him rather than simply gaining more credits. He lives quietly in Manchester with his newly bought keyboard and is currently working his way to Grade 1 Piano just to keep himself occupied and off the streets.
