When we moved from Linden, we also changed our name to better describe our Club. He also summarized the many service projects that our Club has been involved with, including establishing a playground at Linden, support for Samuels Public Library, St. Luke Clinic, a playground at E. There have also been many local service projects, including Fuel for Families, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Letters to Santa and a visit by Santa for local children, and a Community Shred Day. The Rotary name was selected because the members would rotate where they met. It quickly grew, until today there are more than 35,000 clubs, with 1.2 million members world-wide, and as a Rotarian you are welcome at all of the clubs. Rotary functions to provide service and assistance world-wide through the Rotary Foundation. One of the primary projects of the Rotary Foundation is Polio eradication. Joining forces with the Gates Foundation, the number of Polio cases world-wide has diminished from more than 350,000 in 1988 to a hand-full today. Rotary International is also involved in providing grants for Peace fellowships, as well as District and Global grants for numerous activities. Our Club supports these programs in a variety of ways through our dues, and member contributions.

As George and President Rob pointed out, as a member ofRotary, you are welcome at any Rotary Club in the world, andmany of them are quite interesting. And as our members travelthroughout the world, they are made aware of areas of concern andneed. This was the result of a visit by June and Herb to Rio, wherethey were made aware of a struggling school in the slums, broughtthe information back to our Club and our support included a GlobalGrant which was awarded to aid the school. That was almost 13years ago, and we still are supporting the school. Guna (left) alsotold us of a visit that he and Judy made to Nepal, and were madeaware of the need for toilets for the children at one of the localschools, where more than 1,000 children were sharing one toilet. Our Club has made a grant through the Service Committee, toassist in the funding of additional toilets. So when our members aremade aware of a need, they bring the information back to our Club, and our Club acts.

As the Chair of the Administrative Committee, Dave (left)filled the prospective members in on the dues for the Club, and thepossible other ways that they can contribute as members. Jean andMelanie added further information about the possible ways newmembers can contribute through Rotary, to assist the needs of thecommunity and the world.

As President Rob pointed out, our Club is known asthe Fun Club, and we have as our Club Mascots theRubber Chickens adopted when the club was new. Andone of the perks of becoming a new member is that youget to squeeze one (or more) of our Club Mascots. Hesuggested that you avoid the middle chicken (namedElvis), because it doesn’t squawk as well as the others. Itseemed highly insulted and said maybe it was thesqueezer and not the squeezee. As part of the fun, ourClub also has a fund-raising Gala every year to raisemoney for a worthy designated recipient, such as theSamuels Public Library, and a High Tea.

Rotarians are also known for their pin fetish: they loveto collect pins from various clubs from around the countryand world. Trading at our District and International RotaryConferences provide ample opportunities for collections.Peggy (left) displays a variety of pins that she has collectedover the years, including the prized Rubber Chicken Pinfrom our Club. While some of the Rotary pins arehumorous, some are also quite beautiful.

Rotarians are never shy about admitting that they love to eat. Above are pictures of the spread at the Social, contributed by our members. When we meet at 7 am on Wednesday morning, our breakfast is supplied by ourmembers as well, and it is worth getting up at that hour just to enjoy the food.

President Rob askedthose who helped withthe Social to pleasestand, either bycontributing food orhelping in other ways. Our thanks to those whocontributed, includingGuna and Barbara,Kathy, Debbie, andMari Jo, Jean, andPeggy, Michelle and ofcourse Gail, who takesour dirty dishes andbrings them back clean.Thank you all.

Peggy did a beautiful job decorating our tables for the Social.

Debbie reminds that every week we will be collecting ourloose change and other contributions to the money jar, whichwill then be offered in the Silent Auction at our Gala. It willbe located at the check-in table. The jar will be sealed justbefore the Gala, witnessed by Chief Kahle and PresidentRob, so no one will have any idea how much is in the jar, norcan they count it. Usually the jar goes for more than $100and the winner of the bid usually comes out ahead. Socontribute freely.

The Social was not only informative, but it wasfun…and we didn’t have to get up at the crack ofdawn to attend our meeting.

Our Gala this year will take place on May 9, at Lord FairfaxCommunity College. The Committee has lined up a caterer, aformer chef of Soul Mountain, who promises to serve us a veryinteresting meal. Because of Rotary’s involvement in Africa, and the pending announcement in the coming year that Africais Polio Free, as well as our own involvement in water projectsin Africa, our theme is “Rotary Safari Adventure.” As shesaid, be thinking about items for our Silent Auction.
