Congratulations!Recent noteworthy wins by our members
Hello everyone,
It has been an eventful summer in the Water Dog world and
I hope you have also taken part and enjoyed it.
PWDCOntario club held a Water Trial in Waterloo, Ontario
after an exhausting search for a new site, the Laurel Creek
Conservation Area proved a great location. Many thanks to
Lorraine Wilson Trial Chair and her wonderful team of
volunteers for pulling off a great trial in such short notice.
There our Judge, long time member and Water enthusiast
extraordinaire, Catherine Gadd was honoured for her nurturing
the Water Program in Canada and her mentoring of many
members with the announcement of 'The Catherine Gadd
PWDCC Courier Water Dog Trophy. This beautiful trophy with
an image of Catherine's first PWD Kelsey, will have the names
of all dogs and owners that have achieved Courier Water Dog
or Courier Water Dog Excellent at a PWDCC Water Trial. The
perpetual trophy has 15 teams so far to be enscribed!
The PWDCC also held a successful Water Trial in Gull Lake
Alberta that was well attended and enjoyed by all, thanks to
Trial Chair Audrey Hawthorne, Secretary Brenda Brown and
all the volunteers that made the event successful. The PWDCC
boats for this event were transported from BC to Alberta by
volunteer Andy Gamache, a long trip. Thank you Andy.
Also thanks to Val Berry, who in cooperation with PWDCC
Rescue Coordinator Mari Szauerzopf, evaluated a rescue dog
in British Columbia, took the dog into her home, had him
vetted, gave him some remedial training and found him a
suitable to home. Thank you Val, without the many volunteers
running events, taking care of dogs in need, and people
running the various programs we would not have the quality
of club we enjoy.
Many PWDCC members were in attendance at the PWDCA
National Specialty in Pine Mountain, Georgia recently and
many ribbons were returned back to Canada.
Congratulations to all.
The Executive is working on our next National Specialty Show
to be held in Milton Ontario, August 8-12 2012, watch for
details to be announced soon, hope to see you there.
Regards
Herb

ThePresident’sLetter
From Judge Catherine Gadd
You and your committee did a fantastic job. It was a great
pleasure to judge on my home turf. Thank you to the excellent
stewards, especially Pat and Roy they worked tirelessly the
whole weekend. It really helps to have good rowers and throw-
ers! The trophies and ribbons were super. It was disappointing
we did not have more Q’s but there were a lot of new teams.
Hopefully they are inspired to come back next year and try
again.
The site worked out very well despite the challenges we had
with it. Wonderful we have been invited back.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved
for the beautiful CWD plaque and for Roslyn’s very kind
speech. I am looking forward to seeing the Canadian CWDs on
it. I am so happy that water work in Canada is alive and well.
I believe our program can only grow and become even more
successful. The PWDCC really does hold very good trials and
I am proud of all of us!! So again congratulations everyone.
I am already looking forward to next summer. Too bad it is so
far away!!
From Lorraine Wilson, Water Trial Chair
The 8th annual PWDCC/PWDCOntario Branch Water Trials were
held this past weekend at Laurel Creek Conservation Area in
Waterloo Ontario.
We had a great turn out with 18 teams competing. The weather
was fabulous – with sun and minimal wind – great conditions
for all levels. This was a new site for us and it worked very well
for handlers and dogs alike.
I would like to extend a hearty thank-you to my committee
members who worked tirelessly – the trial ran smoothly and
everyone seemed to enjoy their trialing experience.

From Brenda Brown, Water Trial Secretary
Good old perseverance won out the weekend of our trial!
Friday’s fun match had to be cancelled when we could not
launch the boats due to 3 foot high waves and winds. But when
we cautiously peeked out our windows Saturday morning, the
weather looked promising.
Due to a very accommodating judge and participants we were
able to proceed with the fun match and trial on Saturday.
It was a very successful trial!
We had 43 entries over the 2 days from 12 families. We had
21 fun match entries and $30 in donations. Plus various
donations over the weekend by many families including ones
not even entered! The get together feast Saturday night
featured enough food and variety, including salmon, smokies,
burgers, etc. that it was surprising we could get up and move
the next day for another round of water.
I am very proud of everyone who pitched in to make this first
PWDCC Water Trial in Alberta a great success. Thank you to
everyone!

Amendment to Breeder Listing UpdateEmail discussion on re-thinking the requirement tohave ALL LITTERS reported to the Breeder Contact. We are thinking that perhaps a better course wouldbe to ask breeders participating on the Breeder Listto report all litters (and supply the health testing onthe breeding pair).
The other requirements that all on the Breeder Listmust now participate in the New Puppy IntroductoryOffer and that IC is now a required test for at leastone of a breeding pair will remain as new initiatives.
And the reason?Although, in principle, I understand our motion andapplication to all breeders whether they are on theBreeder List or not, in practice:What do we do if there is an oops litter without fulltesting? What do we do if someone uses a stud under 2, juston the hip prelim? What do we do if someone doesn't do all the testing? Are we going to be in a position of 'throwing peopleout of the club'?Are we going to have people who do the testingobject to us 'looking over their shoulders'? TooOrwellian and big brotherish? Are we going to polarize our membership and in asense destroy our club?
Motion by Roslyn: To Amend the motion from theFeb. 10th meeting to Breeders who participate inthe PWDCC Breeder List whether they use the LitterDue listing or not must submit all litters and therequired and recommended health testing to theBreeder Coordinator. Seconded by Henri. Approved.

Mindy spoke to the committee's questions:how the Committee is governed: such as how manymembers (max, min), how long a term, how many
consecutive terms, how do we cycle on, off so thewhole committee isn't changing out at once, regionalrepresentation requirements and anything else.

The WT committee is looking for direction ongovernance from the board. Questions like:TermsTurnoverBy Laws state that committees of the board are ap-pointed, there is no specification of time commit-ment. Some overlap would be appropriate to makefor smooth transitions. Are representation from everyregion important.Article 5 By Laws talks to standing committees, veryopen ended, not much specificPerhaps terms could best be modelled on board par-ticipation rules. There are no real committee rulesand perhaps the board should consider formalizingthis.
National SpecialtySelection of judges, the panel is very good and weshould be able to select from the panel without addi-tional expense to the club. The format we follow is:Selection of Sweepstakes judge is again abreeder/handler judgeWe consider gender, locality in selection.Roslyn will distribute a roster asking board membersfor additional selections for Sweeps, Specialty andBooster and once this is done the members will vote. All sitting board members should be excluded.
AGMPostponed until 2010 financial statements are com-plete, the final three months will be done at the endof May, and then a notice can be sent out with 60days notice. So August looks like a likely date. Thiswill be a phone in teleconference.

Water Trial Committee meeting. The Alberta WaterTrial is approved and planning is moving forward. The location for the Ontario Trial is still beingfinalized. The Water Trial Committee is still lookingfor guidance on governance. Mindy will come upwith some guidelines for their discussion. They can deposit directly to our account, however, cheques are issued based on an approvedbudget and an advance can be given if needed andrequested. The PPM specifies $200.00. Translation of PWDCC New Puppy Offer and Web siteKarine reports that people are interested in the Wa-terlog. If we translate anything why not start withthis? Or should we choose just a part to translatesomething relevant to areas where Franco-Ontariansand Quebecers are located? With production of thenewsletter, it might be difficult to keep the scheduleintact. It would be expensive to hire a translator. Idon't know if translation of the Puppy Offer materialwould be helpful. Perhaps we should start with theweb site, as it's static and it could be done sectionby section. Perhaps have the standard, the CKC hasnow done that so that could be done right away. Then perhaps do “About the Club” or “AboutPWDs”. We can ask other French speaking membersto help and put together a timeline for this. Glendavolunteers her husband to help.
Judges’ EducationKarine inquired what do we have? We have a Judges'Powerpoint presentation that shows the key charac-teristics and standard and it has been used on sev-eral occasions. Judges and the CKC are very specificabout what is required to credit judges with educa-tional credit. We have hands-on dogs to demo therange of coat, colour and size. Roslyn will distributea PDF copy of the presentation. Can this be usedwithin the club for our breeders? Isn’t this just asharing of knowledge. Perhaps at the Specialty?

From Ontario2011 Agility Association of Canada NationalChampionships Results
From Frank and Gayle Squires who recently competed with
their two dogs, Belouro’s Chauncey, MADC, AGDC and
Belouro’s Chase, MADC, SGDC.
“There were five porties from across Canada in total, Chauncey
was definitely first of them. Chauncey finished 11 out of 50
dogs in his jump height (26”), 1 place away from a podium
finish (he would have been 9th actually but for the difference
of one knocked bar!).
Chase finished 39th out of 122 dogs at his height (22”)!
Which was really great and as he is in the most competitive
grouping it was a way better finish than we had anticipated.
They both were just unbelievable really… they did everything
I asked of them in wonderful style, speed and energy level!”
“Chauncey on Deck, Chase in the hole!”
This is the sound of the gate steward at an Agility trial. It’s also
the sound of manic butterflies in my tummy and adrenaline
surging in my normally pretty well balanced chemical make up.
The boys and I are getting ready to run the next course!
Belouro’s Chauncey and Chase qualified at the Ontario AAC
Regionals this spring in order to participate in the Agility
Association of Canada, National’s Competition held this year
at Burl’s Creek north of Barrie, Aug 5-7.
The actual competition was held Saturday and Sunday, with
Friday being a warm up day. Each “team” (dog and handler)
compete in three separate classes: Standard, Jumpers and
Gamblers each day. These events use jumps, tunnels, A-
frames, teeter totters, dog walks and weave poles to create
unique challenges for the dog and mind bending tasks for the
handler.
“Standard” uses all the equipment positioned in counter
intuitive locations on the course. This is designed to make the
handler and dog execute a variety of moves, changes of
direction and pace, while (hopefully) successfully completing
the variously placed obstacles on the course within the span
of the appointed Standard Course Time (circa 60 seconds!).

While surprisingly few of our breed participate in this enjoyable
sport, PWDs are extremely talented at doing Agility. Their high
energy level, desire to please, intelligence and athleticism are
particularly well suited to the game. It is common within our
Barrie based training group (a wide mix of dogs though
dominated by border collies and other herding breeds) to hear
comments from fellow participants with MUCH more
experience than I, affectionately complaining how unfair it is
that we have such brilliant dogs!! And how Chauncey and
Chase appear to do anything and everything I ask of them on
the agility course! And when I lose my way (which I have done
on more than one occasion) the boys seem to figure it out for
themselves!!
It really is true, that with what seems to have been a minimum
of effort on my part Chauncey and Chase have each achieved
significantly competitive results in Agility, and now also at the
National level.
Handler teams came from across Canada for the Nationals,
having qualified at their respective Regionals. The year’s
training, trials and games culminate in this final series of
games and for some of us the pressure can be a wee bit
intense! (Not for the dogs – for them it’s just another couple
of days of fun with their humans!)
Saturday and Sunday games start at 6 30am. So it’s up at
4:30 am (nobody should have to do this) in order to arrive at
Burl’s Creek in time for the course “walkthroughs.”
“Walkthroughs” are a period of 45 minutes where the handler
(minus dog!) is permitted to walk the three courses in the early
morning fog and dew, (rubber boots recommended) that he/she
will run with their canine partner over the course of the day.
Course strategy is plotted at this time and decisions are made
by the handler about the best ways to deal with the particular
configurations of equipment as they are laid out on the course.
As there were approximately 600 dogs competing, Saturday
and Sunday were long days. While having two dogs running
kept me twice as busy as some, I enjoyed getting to run three
courses twice each day!
Both Chauncey and Chase accomplished far more than they
ever have before in any Agility trial, so it was really a thrilling
weekend for us!
PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org SEPTEMBER 2011 15
“Jumpers” is mainly jumps and tunnels and is very fast. One
of the challenges for this handler, in the midst of tight turns
and disorienting changes of direction, is to remember where
the 20 or so obstacles ARE in order to direct the dog to the
next obstacle successfully. The whole jumpers course takes
about 30 seconds… so there’s not a lot of time to bring out
your GPS!!
“Gamblers” is a particularly challenging class where you are
expected to SEND AWAY your pet (who you’ve previously likely
trained to stick by your side,) over, through and around
obstacles “remotely” at a distance of up to 20 feet from you.
The dog has to leave the handler behind the “gamble line” and
has 20 seconds to complete the sequence of obstacles at the
end of the gambler’s course. It goes by fast!!
In each event, the goal is to run “clean” that is, to successfully
take every obstacle and jump in their proper sequence, clear all
the jumps without knocking bars and to run fast, as the “team”
is scored both on accuracy and speed… but no pressure!!
It’s fun for the dog and the handler… and very challenging for
both. Things can go very right or very wrong in a hurry, and
without good coaching and instruction, it’s sometimes hard to
know why! There’s lots to learn, but it’s fun to see progress in
developing skills and improving performance.

Agility is a sport where there is no limit to how much your team
can improve. This game can really grab hold of you, what was
initially a mild interest in a fun activity that promised to help
with excessive portie energy and brains, has become (for me at
least!) a border line addiction to the adrenaline rush of running
a challenging course with my best canine friend(s) beside me!
I should point out, that if you are interested in exploring this
activity, there is lots of room to do beginner agility on a casual
basis, non competitively, just for the simple fun of doing
something different with your canine partner.
We’ve also made a lot of great friends in the agility world, and
that is just one more way that Chauncey and Chase have been
such a gift in our lives.
If your life has been so blessed to have a Portie in your home,
and you are at all inclined to take on a new fun challenge I
highly recommend you check out this enjoyable past time!
Your PWDs will thank you for it!!!

The 2011 World Dog ShowJuly 7 French National Championships andJuly 8 World Show for PWDs (Group 8)
Roslyn Eskind, John Brown and Mindy
Selby decided a dog show in Paris was not
to be missed especially if it was the World
Show where 36,000 dogs were expected!
You can only imagine the logistics! With
support from Mindy Selby, our ‘kennel help’
and Danik Dancause as our handler we set
off to conquer Paree.
We were happy with our results, Ruby, Ch
Seabury’s Goodby Ruby Tuesday, RCAC was
Reserve Winners Female at the French National Show, and was second
in her class on both days. Nash earned an Excellent rating at the World
Show although the Portuguese Judge lamented he didn’t have enough
coat and to bring him back to him when he had a longer coat!
Also attending was Donna Gottdenker and her dogs’ results were
Claircreek Emilio Robusto 1st in Open Males and Winners Male for the
French National Show and 4th Open Male for the World Show. And for
both shows: Claircreek Dolce Cordelia 3rd Open Female and Claircreek
Vesta Da Cozhina 2nd
Intermediate Female.
’’Way To Glow Da Pedra Da
Anixa” was Best of Breed
and Best in Group winner,
owned by Ana Santos of
Portugal
Interestingly in France the
curly and wavy coated dogs
are shown separately. It
was fun seeing the European PWDs, the profuse coats, the ‘style’ of
dog shown, and making contacts with breeders from England, France,
Portugal, Sweden, Holland and Italy. Also interesting was seeing breeds
not usually seen in North America, but frankly it was difficult to find
time to really see the show.
After the show we spent time in the Loire, then back to Paris for some
well earned vacation time. The dogs enjoyed the cafés and fine
restaurants. The park at the
Eiffel Tower allowed them to
stretch their legs. Now their
resumés include a trip to
France, enjoying café dining
and chic Parisian hotels!

Keith Phillips and Arlene Phillips and
Tammy Hibberson, all from Vancouver
Island, attended the Pacific Northwest's
Water Trial the last weekend of June at
Deep Lake. The weather was a little
chilly but the trial was beautifully
organized and everyone made us feel
really welcome. The Washington crew
was extremely supportive and
encouraging to us folks from the north.
“Sophie Phillips” earned her Apprentice
Water Dog title with Keith handling her.
“Tulips Downey” earned her Working
Water Dog title and “Riglee Hibberson”
earned a Versatility pass both days,
Tammy handled Tulips and Riglee.
LATE ADDITION: Riglee earned HIT at
the Nanaimo CKC Agility Trials Sunday
July 10. (didn’t know as we left the tria
after our runs!) It was Riglee’s first
weekend in Excellent. There were lots of
experienced people at the trials who
offered help with course walk throughs
and strategies for negotiating the
challenging sequences. It was great to
have the help and I’m thrilled Rigs
pulled off her first Agility High In Trial
at seven years young.
