Greetings to All and Happy New Year!

2013 has ushered in some changes on the Board of our

national breed club. Herb and Mari Szauerzopf resigned

as President and Rescue Co-ordinator, as well as Henri

Berube, Ontario Director. On behalf of our membership,

I would like to thank Herb, Mari and Henri for all of

their hard work over the past years. The new Board slate

is listed below with contact information.

The new Executive has already started to get things

rolling. Lots of new ideas are being put forth regarding

how to increase our membership voice to the Board.

Planning for the National Specialty in 2014 has begun,

as well as planning for the 2013 water training and trial

season.

We are asking our membership across the country to

actively support our rescue program by donating their

time and resources in the event that a member of our

beloved breed requires rescue services. More details

about our new rescue model will follow in subsequent

Waterlogs. Lorraine Wilson is our new Rescue Co-ordina-

tor and we are grateful that Lorraine has agreed to take

on this important responsibility.

Roslyn continues to design and co-ordinate the publica-

tion of the Waterlog. She will be joined by Mike Collins

as the New Waterlog Editor in May, 2013 once he

retires. Deirdre Hall has taken on the role of our Breeder

Program Co-ordinator. Member breeders can send their

litter postings to Deirdre with appropriate documenta-

tion. Her contact information is below. Thank you Cindy

Berube for fulfilling this role over the years.

I would like to thank our new Board members for their

energy, enthusiasm and commitment to our wonderful

breed. We welcome feedback and input from our mem-

bership about any issue that is of concern to you.

We’ve created a group email to the board on the Officers

Contact page. And, you can still email individually any

officer, board member or program coordinator from this

page.

We’re looking for your ideas to improve the Waterlog

content, to make it more relevant, so please let us know

your thoughts.

Here’s to a successful and productive 2013!

I want to help all PWD owners, old andnew, to be able to enjoy the benefits andknowledge that this organization has tooffer.

Andy GamacheMy wife and I received our first porty in1999. Fraser was an improper coat anda great intro to the breed. We startedagility as we needed a job for all theenergy he had. We currently have threeportys in our home. Calla is 12.5 yearsold and thinks she is still a puppy. Sheis always ready to go but not too early asshe needs her sleep in time. Max, herson, is now 8. Max is the first Canadianborn PWD to obtain the CKC AG.M. Chtitle. He is a lot of fun to have on theagility course and we enjoy water workas well. Both Max and Calla over the lastseveral years have been the number oneor two top CKC agility dogs in Canada.Paws is Max’s daughter and is now 4.She is yet another level of energy andis truly a wonderful dog to have in ourlives.

I have been the president of the AlbertaPortuguese Water Dog Club for the last 6years. I have stepped down and am nowjust another club member. I am proud tohave been a part in getting water trialsin Alberta the last two years. Both havebeen a great success. I look forward tomany more trials as we have a greatgroup in Alberta.

Gracie (Sun Joy’s Goodness Gracious),my first Portuguese Water Dog. I did notrealize this would be the beginning of anexciting adventure. Gracie’s first litter inthe spring of 1996 produced seven pup-pies and as one of my favourite movieswas an Italian classic called “SevenBeauties” the combination of bothinspired the use of Sevenbeauty as mykennel name. In this first litter wasGeorge, (BIS Am Can Ch. SevenbeautyGeorge) my first show dog. At that timeI met the handler Danik Dancause, andtogether with George, we formed anexciting team winning the first all breedBest In Show for a Canadian bredPortuguese Water Dog.

Kathy DickI am married to Ken, we have twochildren, Samantha (5) and Stephen(16m), and two exceptional PWD’sboth from the same breeder: BelouroKennels, Poco (8) and Areia (5). Myfamily’s history is Portuguese. I offer mylove of dogs and the breed. I am able torelate to the majority of the club’s mem-bers as a pet owner, but I also have aninterest in working and other sports. With the support of my family, our dogshave achieved the following: 2 Junior, 2Apprentice, 2 CGN’s. Poco has a ribbonfrom the first WetDog Conformation Show and Areia hasa bronze medal and 3 of 4 legs in DiscDog, she is also an MBIS GCH.

Jennifer ByersI am a part time nurse and passionateabout my dogs. As a child I loved dogsand when I finally acquired my first dog,a Pointer my allergies forced me toplace him, this was a very painful expe-rience. In the early 90’s, I saw a pictureof a Portuguese Water Dog on the coverof the Dogs Annual and discovered “anon-shedding hypo-allergic dog”. Furtherinvestigation lead me to BeverlyJorgensen of Sun Joy Kennel inConnecticut where I felt in love with

Michelle JacksonI am married, have two wonderful chil-dren and two amazing dogs. We havealways been dog owners. We purchasedour PWD last July 2012 from OnduladoPWDs Kennels. We researched the breedextensively and knew that the personali-ty of this breed would fit into our activefamily lifestyle. The PWDs are an amaz-ing breed and give so much love toeveryone.

Over the past several years I have beenan active member on boards of severalcharitable organizations. I hope to bringthat experience to this club.

I am interested in meeting people withsimilar interests in purebred dogs andresponsible breeding practices, plus Iam very interested in assisting with vari-ous club activities.

We are presently working towards obtain-ing a Conformation Championship forour puppy with the assistance ofLorraine Wilson from Big Bay PWDsFour Paws Training.

Sharon LapstraI bring a wide variety of life experienceto the position which I feel would bebeneficial to the club. I obtained anundergraduate degree in American andCanadian History in 1982 and went onto complete my Master’s degree inSocial Work in 1985. In my professionallife I was Executive Director of two not-for-profit agencies and conducted train-ing, in addition to clinical responsibili-ties. I also managed an employee assis-tance program for a large corporation.I believe that my leadership experiencein managing/developing/facilitating aboard of directors and collaborationskills would be an asset to our club atthis time. I became interested in thePortuguese Water Dog in 1999. Webought our first dog Maggie in 1999.Since then I have developed a success-ful breeding program under the kennelname Keeva Bay, which focuses on thebetterment of the breed, in all aspects.I am very dedicated to these wonderfulanimals and support all activities thatour dogs participate in. We have shownour dogs extensively in conformation, obedience and in 2013, will have threeof our dogs working in the water pro-gram. About 6 years ago I developed aninterest in the Schapendoe. I have beeninvolved in getting our National breedclub organized and currently sit on theBoard of Directors as the Ontario repre-sentative. I am also a strong believerand supporter of mentoring, supportingone another and education. It is onlythrough collaboration that we fulfill ourgoals to better our breed and to be thepeople that our dogs think we are!

Mavis McClintockSamador Portuguese Water Dogs (CKCPerm. Reg’d)

I was born and raised in Winnipeg andgot my first show dog, a Samoyed, in1969. Ch OTCh Fiala Regina was thefirst of many Samoyeds and Labradorswho filled my home. Under the kennelname of Samador, which I registered in1972, they were all extensively exhibit-ed in Conformation and Obedience withmany show champions and obediencetitled dogs, including two UDs.

In 1990, while living in the BritishVirgin Islands, I met and fell hopelesslyin love with the Portuguese Water Dogand in 1992 Ch Neocles Lord NelsonCD came into my life. Nelson was oneof the first PWDs in Canada to achievea championship and obedience title andwas the first of many PWDs and handfulof Lowchens to share our home – all ofwhich achieved conformation and obedi-ence and/or water trial titles. I nowbreed only PWDs and have been fortu-nate to breed Best In Show, multipleBPIS, Specialty BOS and Puppywinners, many group and puppy groupwinners as well as agility, obedience andWater Trial winners.

For more 40 years I have been dedicat-ed to working in my Provincial andNational breed clubs and I am proud ofbeing the first PWD breeder/judge inCanada. My passion for dogs and theconformation ring is boundless and theopportunity to judge is a great joy. I amlicensed for the entire working groupand on permit for the first half of thenon sporting breeds.

Glenda NewtonMember: CKC (since 1985), PWDCA &PWDCC.

In 1983, Glenda spent the summermonths looking after her sister’s litter ofChow puppies and by the age of 17 hadwhelped her own first litter of Chowsunder her sister’s kennel name Oban.By 19, she had the 4th top chow(Conformation) in Canada. In 1993Glenda and her mother purchased alarge boarding kennel on the outskirtsof Montreal where she fell in love withPortuguese Water Dogs.

Currently, Glenda owns 5 PWD’s. Thefirst PWD to arrive was Phoebe (Dec 26,1995 - 24 Feb. 2012) from ElaineSuter’s Hunter Kennel and the crewgrew rather quickly! Fortunate enough tobreed Phoebe to Sun Joy’s Master Plan,Glenda had one of the first brownChampions in Canada, and felt extreme-ly privileged to own a male pup "Echo"out of Sun Joy’s last litter from Kae andDuke. Operating under the MacDuffKennel name, the PWD’s are interwovenin the daily lives of her partner RobinVosatka and her son Colin (12 yrs old),who works with the dogs in junior han-dling, conformation, dock diving andsome agility. Glenda has 2 undergraddegrees, and is working on her MSc, sheis currently on assignment as the ChiefCivilian Personnel Officer for the UnitedNations in Brindisi, Italy.

Pat VokesIt is my pleasure to serve as Treasurer ofthe PWDCC. My husband Roy and I havebeen members of the Club for 5 yearsand I welcome the opportunity to workon behalf of the members and supportthe Club and its various activities. I have30+ years of banking and accountingexperience which will be valuable inapplying my skills in the position ofTreasurer.

We became interested in the breed someyears ago and brought Kelby into ourhousehold in June 2006. Our originalintention was to have a great pet thatwould enjoy time at the cottage. Thisquickly changed when we attended aClub Fun Day which included an intro-duction to “Water Work”. We were soimpressed by what the dogs and ownerscould achieve that we became immedi-ately hooked. Since that day we havebeen very active in training and compet-ing for the various water titles. In the offseason we have Kelby involved in obedi-ence training.

We are proud to be members of both thePWDCC and PWDCA and have concen-trated in the area of Water Trials andtraining. We are also members of theGreat Lakes PWD Club and enjoy attend-ing their trials held in Michigan.

I look forward to working with the rest ofthe Board and meeting and working withall of the great members of our Club.

New Rescue CoordinatorLorraine WilsonLorraine is the current chair ofPWDCOntario and heads up the branch’swater work training program. Lorrainebecame involved in the breed 13 yearsago when she was looking for a PWD asa pet. She purchased her first PWD –Hogan - from Cathie Sockett, OnduladoPortuguese Water Dogs. Lorraine becameinvolved in obedience training and whenshe met Cathy Gadd, began training withHogan, in the water.

Lorraine’s first love was to doperformance activities with her dog. Infact, Lorraine initially was not involvedin conformation events, but strictlyperformance. After being encouraged byCathie Sockett, Lorraine began to showHogan, completing his CanadianChampionship and campaigning him to#3 PWD in Canada. Breeding requestsfollowed.

Eight years ago Lorraine acquired herfirst breeding bitch Kyrie- from JulieParker, Valkyrie PWD’s, Erie,Pennsylvania and established her kennelBigBay Reg’d. Lorraine has retired as aHuman Resources professional and nowfocuses solely on training, pet services, show handling and breeding.

New Breeder ContactDeirdre HallI grew up in Ottawa in a family whichalways had two or more dogs. My motherbred Dachshunds and exposed me tobreeding at an early age.

My husband and I got our first WaterDog in 1992 from Leona Ives (AlianaReg.), we named her Fado. She wasjoined 9 months later with an Irishmarked male named Patife and then acouple years later with our lovely brownboy Tigre who we had for over 17 yearsbefore he went to Rainbow Bridge lastOctober. Our present family consists ofsix Water Dogs and two horses.

In the early 1990’s I began to helpLeona whelp her litters and spend week-ends with her raising the puppies. Thistime served as an apprenticeship tolearn more about this breed and how toraise happy and healthy puppies. WhenI retired from my profession as aCommunity Planner and Graphic ArtistI began my own breeding kennel whichI named after my first Water Dog ‘Fado’.I continue to strive to breed for the bet-terment of our beloved Water Dog.

I hope, in some small way, to be ofservice to the PWDCC and its membersby being the Breeder Contact.

Lorraine has served as the treasurerand membership co-ordinator and thenbecame involved to get water trialsapproved in Canada.

Lorraine states that her greatestaccomplishment is her contribution toour water work program, she states thatit is “her passion” and that our dogshave such a powerful instinct to performin the water that they learn it veryquickly. Her husband Andy and herchildren are all very proud of heraccomplishments. Lorraine has apassion to not only work with her owndogs, but to coach others who want tolearn how to compete both in and outof the water.

Lorraine has a special appreciation forthe intelligence and spunkiness of ourwonderful breed and is looking forwardto ensuring every PWD has the lifestyleand loving family they deserve throughher role as rescue coordinator.

PWDCA 2012Register of Merit AwardsThe PWDCA Register of Merit (ROM) program is an acknowl-edgment of outstanding working ability and versatility in thePortuguese Water Dog. Discovery of A New Early OnsetProgressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)in the Portuguese Water Dog

PRA was first reported in the Portuguese Water Dog in 1990.

In the PWD PRA is inherited and is transmitted as a simple

recessive. What has occurred in PWDs up until recently is

prcd-PRA (progressive rod-cone degeneration results in eventu-

al blindness with a later onset). The Portuguese Water Dog

Club of America (PWDCA) has supported the research work of

Dr. Gustavo Aguirre and Dr. Greg Acland and their associates

at the University of Pennsylvania. Their research has devel-

oped a DNA mutation gene test to identify dogs that are either

normal, carriers or affected with prcd-PRA. The current test for

prcd is available from OptiGen.

Please visit www.optigen.com for more information

Normal/Clear, Carrier, and Affected are used to designate a

dogs test results. Carrier and Affected dogs should only be

bred to Normal/Clear to avoid producing prcd puppies.

For information on having a dog OptiGen tested go to:

www.optigen.com.

Newly diagnosed form of PRA: A new form of PRA

has been recognized in Portuguese Water Dogs. This new form

of PRA appears to be an early onset variety as affected dogs

are approximately two years of age. Dr. Gus Aquirre and his

staff at University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) are collecting

data to identify affected and at risk dogs in an effort to meet

our goal of obtaining future genetic test for this condition.

So far it has appeared in two related litters. With the assis-

tance of owners and breeders of the initially involved dogs,

many relatives have been evaluated by the team at UPENN

thus far. To date, affected dogs have been identified in com-

panion homes. The mode of inheritance is not currently known

and the incidence of this disease is not currently known nor

will be known unless all PWDs are evaluated, both breeding

dogs and pet/companions. The list of affected dogs can be

found on the New Form of PRA page in the secure Members

Only section of the PWDCA.org website. As new information

comes forward this list will be updated. Additionally, you can

find updates and a place for feedback and questions in the

PRA Discussion in the Member Only forum on the PWDCA.org

website. If you are not a member of the PWDCA and wish to

check on your dog’s status, check in with your breeder and

arrange for an eye exam.

The PWDCA recommends that all dogs used for breeding have

an annual CERF or ECR examination. A CERF or ECR exam is

only good for one year and can only be done by a board certi-

fied ophthalmologist.

To truly have knowledge about the overall eye health of the

breed, it is just as important to have regular eye exams for

our companion/pet PWDs. For the companion/pet dogs that

are older than 4 years old, if no symptoms of eye problems

are noticed, an eye exam no less than every other year,

recorded with an eye registry, until the PWD is at least

10 years old is recommended.

It is important to be aware of new changes that have occurred

in regards to the American College of Veterinary

Ophthalmologist (ACVO) and Canine Eye Registration

Foundation (CERF). Effective November 1, 2012, the ACVO

will transition affiliation with to an Orthopedic Foundation for

Animals registry (OFA). This new registry will be called the

OFA Eye Certification Registry or ECR. CERF will continue to

operate and maintain its database and report to OFA.

It is just as important to have as many apparently normal pet

dogs evaluated as well so that we can identify the scope of the

problem in our breed. Please go to board certified

Ophthalmologists only. Look for clinics in your area and,

please participate in an exam, and submit the results to

Optigen or CERF for recording in their databases. This will

insure that the data is available for the researchers.

A veterinary ophthalmologist in Canada can be found by

searching the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists

website: www.acvo.org.

The final slate will be sent to members week ofJanuary 21st. The new board should have a meetingthat week to discuss going forward and schedulingof regular meetings as the 2nd Thursday of eachmonth is a problem for two prospective board mem-bers.

AGMThe AGM be held Feb. 21 as planned. Pat has a fewoutstanding questions before finalizing the finan-cials. Merchandise inventory is also needed to com-plete financials. Brawna Levy and Roslyn Eskind willreport on merchandise and club material in theirpossession. Roslyn will ship Water Trial ribbons andframes from the National to Brawna.

Alberta Water TrialThere are a few outstanding issues with the state-ment and expenses. Waiting to hear back from thetrial chair.

New boat for OntarioThe boat purchase is going ahead, Roy Vokes hassent an expense report, see attached, to equip theboat. Members will be canvassed to see if someoneis willing to store the boats nearby the Laurel Creektraining location. Roy Vokes will purchase the singleboat trailer and the blue boat will be sold later inthe season to defray purchase costs of the new boat.Next meeting scheduled for Wed. January 23rd withnew prospective board members invited to attend.Lori Crandlemire has resigned from the board, ceding her position to a more experienced volunteerfrom British Columbia. Roslyn thanked Lori forher service on the board and wished her continuedsuccess.

Motion to adjourn made by Roslyn, seconded byPat. Approved.

The Breeder Contact asked to have the ‘Litter Due’listing form amended to a ‘Breeder Report’ form toreflect the new policy. The ‘Breeder Report’ formhad been presented to the board at the April boardmeeting, and was distributed to the Breeder Contactand the board in advance of the meeting with thechanged text pulled out and shown in the body ofthe email. There was no discussion or questions. The form was approved at the April 2012 meeting.(Subsequent to the December 2012 meeting, theoriginal email and further relevant correspondencewas distributed to the board for review.) It was sug-gested that this change was made for personal rea-sons to list a litter. However, it was pointed out thatthis breeder had all appropriate documentation (fullindividual testing and CHIC ratings prior to thebreeding. Certificates were available in compliancewith PWDCC recommendations).

In rebuttal to the original discussion re the untestedstud dog, it was stated that this was an ‘in-housebreeding’ with the stud dog ‘clear by parentage’ andhips rated preliminary excellent, with a currentCERF.

The president polled the board for an immediatesolution.

The board was asked if it felt that there was somedamage done, would the board consider this a prob-lem, or is this issue completely specious with nogrounding? What would the board think if anotherbreeder had done this?

The president asked would a resignation fix theproblem and offered to resign immediately and with-draw from the club if it was felt that the reputationof the PWDCC had been damaged.

Another question was asked: Was this breeding donein accordance with club policy in place at the timeof the breeding? The president was not on thebreeder list when this breeding took place.

No one requested a resignation. A request was madefor further discussion as this issue was broughtbefore the board.

Henri Berube: In June I offered to resign when Idiscovered someone had gone in and made somechanges to the ‘Breeder Report’ form without con-sulting the board. I offered my resignation at thattime, but was assured that this issue would beresolved. Secondly, when a motion is tendered itbecomes the motion of the board, if anyone hadissue with the suggested changes to the BreederPolicy changes, they should have spoken up beforevoting. I find it hard to work when rules are changedwithout discussion. I don’t have confidence in theboard and don’t have time to go back to review theminutes of the April meeting.

It was reiterated that the ‘Breeder Report’ form wassent to the board in advance of the April meeting.

Henri further stated: Odd you’re bringing this upnow as you’re stepping down, I think this discussionis inappropriate. I have done nothing but volunteerfor this club, I represent this breed passionately. Ifyou want me to resign I will be gone.

It was suggested that the board review the Aprilmeeting transcript and recording to see what it says.

It was pointed out that the litter was born inNovember, and that it is a current issue.

Herb: I officially resign and Mari also gives her res-ignation as Rescue Coordinator. Herb leaves themeeting.

Henri: I resign also, goodnight. Henri leaves themeeting.

As the board no longer had a quorum, the officialmeeting was ended at 8:37pm EST

Annual General MeetingDate is February 21, 2013. Pat Vokes will be con-tacted to ask about Financials preparation. The slatebios of the incoming board should be prepared. AnnWeiszmann will prepare and complete this. Roslynreminded the board that all board members have [email protected] email that is linked to their regularemail account and, each member can set up an out-going address with this address also.

Regional SpecialtyThe numbers are 23 plus 7 (non regular classesand baby puppy) and 19 for the Booster. Once therebate information is available from the Elora showcommittee, the budget can be finalized. There is$450.00 in sponsorship, although we didn’t preparean official web site for sponsorship, people offereddonations. At the National Specialty we had 55 reg-ular entries. In the past at the Regional Specialty inJuly 2009 at Oxford KC in Ontario, we had 41entries, in Chilliwack BC April 2, 2010 we had 52including Sweepstakes (34/18). So this year not abad number considering the time of the year.

Breeder ProgramThe board has spent 18 months discussing theBreeder Program, changing policy to give testingand reporting for breeding pairs more prominence.Herb was contacted on his recent November litter,co-bred with another board member and two otherofficers of the club. The sire was bred under 2 yearsof age with a current CERF and OFA prelim rating.OFA prelims are acceptable (refer to our revisedHealth testing recommendations on the club website). Other testing was not done, in contraventionof club policy. It was later explained that DNA test-ing on the dam of the sire was in process to applyfor a CHIC rating for her, and subsequently ‘testingby parentage’ for the sire of the litter, also anacceptable PWDCC practice. However, the testingwas not in place when the breeding and whelping ofthis litter occurred, and there is a second litter witha litter brother in the same circumstances.

Issue raised for discussion: If the leadership of theclub doesn’t see value in following the club policy,it damages the reputation of the club and under-mines our breeding recommendations and Breederprogram. Why should any other breeder follow thepolicy?

Brought forward as a response was that a changewas made to the Breeder Report form without boardapproval. The change was to report a litter to theBreeder Contact ‘when the bitch was pregnant’. Itwas explained that the change was made inresponse to the new regulations in place for 2012.With the new 2012 policy, the Breeder Contactwould have to do considerably more work, as everylitter bred by breeders on the list would have tohave health testing verified, not just those where alitter due listing was requested.
