The Wave Newsletter 1
It’s hard to believe it is almost the end of July, which means our annual Cajun Fish Fry FUNdraiser on
September 19 at the CRRC Recreation Center is upon us! We have an incredible entertainment lineup, great
food, and wonderful auction items (especially for you!). Please see Barbara Knight’s article on page 3 and
our ad on page 2 for more information! Plan to come join the FUN!
Highlights for April, May, June, and July include:
1. CLRW MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEON, April 15. The theme was “On the Wings of Freedom.” Our Guest Speaker,
former U.S. Army Ranger, Nate Self, and our Special Guest Singer, Specialist Retired Justin “JP” Lane,
moved the audience with their heartfelt stories of combat and survival. We were honored to have them as
our guests. Marilyn Burrow, V.P. Membership, and her volunteers planned an excellent luncheon and
program. The handmade birdhouse centerpieces created by Janet Blum, Karen Baker, and Marilyn Burrow
were absolute hits and sold quickly!
2. TFRW LEGISLATIVE DAY, April 16, Austin. Included in our schedule of events was a tour of Speaker of the House Joe Straus’
Capitol residence, as well as a luncheon featuring speeches by many of our elected officials.
3. HOLES FORE HEROES, April 19. Melinda Rapp and I attended the Holes FORE Heroes Golf Tournament hosted by New Braunfels
High School senior Caitlin Brown. Caitlin raised over $12,000 for the Ft. Sam Houston Fisher House! She’s a very inspiring young
woman, and we wish her well.
4. CHICKS HAVING AN AWESOME TIME (C.H.A.T.), April 22. Janet Blum graciously hosted our first C.H.A.T. at her home. Even the
weather cooperated that day, and we enjoyed time outside in her beautifully manicured yard. Thank you, Janet!
5. NEW MEMBER SOCIAL, May 13. Many “thank yous!” to our new members and the members who volunteered and braved the
rain to attend this get-together at my home. We were drenched but enjoyed great food and a great opportunity to learn more
about our new members.
6. HISTORIC FLOOD on the BLANCO RIVER. On Tuesday, May 26, Candy Carson called asking for assistance for 10 families that
live off Fischer Store Road. The bridge on this road that crossed the Blanco River was wiped out by the flood. Hays County support
personnel were focused on efforts on the other side of the river. We rallied support from the club, collected supplies and food, and
delivered goods for two days. We used our Facebook page to inform people. Through our site, relief support personnel learned of
these 10 families and organized others to assist. Our own Marsha Cooper still delivers meals twice a week to these families.
7. CLRW BUSINESS MEETING, June 17. Link Fuller was our gracious host and motivational Guest Speaker. Link opened his auction
house to us, helped us set up, ensured we had everything and assisted as needed. Link’s speech titled, “What Real Leadership
Looks Like” hit the right chord. Well done, Link, and thank you!
8. MEMORIAL RECEPTION for HENRI RUPP, June 20. Friends and local clubs, including CLRW, donated $750 to purchase books,
DVD’s and instruction materials for the children’s section at Tye Preston Memorial Library. The reception was held the day before
Father’s Day, so Henri’s husband, Bob, and their children could share in the event. See photos on our Facebook page!
9. 4th of JULY PARADE, Startzville. Yes, it was hot, but NOT that hot! Our float, our five adorable dogs, and our theme (CLRW
“RePUPlicans” Lead Right) were a huge hit. We received lots of cheers along the parade route. Donna & Archie Dishman and Sandi
& Neal Koonce were the heroes – many thanks to all of you for your hard work!
10. CLRW BUSINESS MEETING, July 15. We were honored to have Caitlin Brown present a short talk on the Holes FORE Heroes Golf
Tournament. Brady Preiss, one of our Canyon Lake High School scholarship recipients, thanked the club for our donation and
spoke about his life goals. GIG’EM AGGIES! The meeting concluded with Jenna Hall’s quick overview of the Patriot Academy. She
is raising funds to attend again this year. It was great to have the “younger generation” participate!
11. FISHER HOUSE DONATIONS, July 17. Star Carey and I spent $527 for specific items needed at Ft. Sam Houston Fisher House. We
were able to buy everything on their list, including much-needed blankets and lots of sugar! It took two big carts to haul it all in!

2015 Cajun Fish Fry FUNdraiser NEWS
Plans for the September 19 FUNdraiser are fully underway. Many of our members are engaged in planning. We really appreciate those volunteers who stepped forward at the July meeting. HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED YET? If not, the time is NOW because we need EVERYONE’S help -- especially selling tickets. Our patrons will have a wonderful meal and an evening loaded with entertainment! And we’ll offer a variety of ways for patrons to purchase auction items and vote for their favorite entertainers.
NEW FOR 2015
Ticket prices: The new ticket price is $20 each. We decided to increase the price this year after carefully considering last year’s expenses. This year building rental, decorations, printing, and other items increased in price. The cost of the meal also went up due to an increase in the price of fish. Considering the meal, fellowship, FUN and entertainment we’ll provide, it would be hard to beat at $20 per ticket!
Purchasing tickets: Tickets may now be purchased online at our website: www.canyonlakerw.com. Of course, they are also available by calling Marsha Cooper or Suzanne Higgerson @ 830-308-5467. We encourage you to start selling them NOW. Our Cajun Fish Fry was sold out last year as people clamored to buy tickets. ONLY 400 tickets will be sold, and we expect tickets to go fast. So please start selling to all your friends who want to support CLRW and its programs.
Sales of Reserved Tables: Reserved tables will be sold for $200, for the added convenience of our dinner guests. The $200 cost includes dinner for 8 people with a prime table location. We are encouraging members to purchase tickets as soon as possible in order to get the best table available. Several tables were sold the first day – so get yours reserved TODAY.
BYOB: After Jeanne’s thorough investigation, the CLRW Board and membership voted to allow BYOB at this year’s event. CLRW will have setups available. Guests will obtain setups by redeeming Boudreaux tickets they’ve purchased.
ITEMS NEEDED
Becky Garrett asks that anyone who has been collecting empty wine bottles for table decorations to please call her. Over 60 bottles have already been finished for wonderful centerpieces.
Janet Blum is collecting items for the Silent Auction. She is especially in need of ‘big/valuable items’ that will draw bidders’ attention (such as: trips, condo use, airline tickets, golf games, etc.) for the Live Auction. Also, donations of liquor/wine/spirits are needed to fill a giant Live Auction item that we hope will bring big bucks. Please get your items to Janet or bring them to the next meeting.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (during the event).
A volunteer is still needed to assist Darlene Pizarro in collecting meal tickets (Krewe of da Billets).
Linda Williamson needs several volunteers to help with the Photo Booth.
Volunteers are needed to fill glasses with ice and setups.
Various other Krewes need additional willing hands, so please call Barbara Knight if you can help.
So sell, sell, sell! Let’s prepare to make a difference in 2016!! Thanks for all your help!!!
TIPS FOR SELLING FISH FRY TICKETS…
1. We want and need all our CLRW members (and spouses!) to purchase tickets if you are planning to attend the Fish Fry. But, if you know you are not going to be to be able to attend, don’t purchase a ticket! Make a donation to the FUNdraiser instead! We need 400 people at the event! We need them bidding on auction items, voting for the talent act of their choice and joining in the fun. We will miss you, but you can still support our important fundraiser by making a donation…and we hope you will!
2. Attending other area clubs’ events and meetings is a great way to sell tickets! Please wear your Cajun Fish Fry FUNdraiser t-shirt when you attend and sell Reserved Tables and individual Fish Fry tickets. We also encourage members to sell special Gift Certificates for Boudreaux Tickets prior to the FUNdraiser. By purchasing in advance, buyers get a deal – 20 tickets for $15. However, Boudreaux Tickets bought at the event will be $1 per ticket.

“What REAL Leadership Looks Like!”
By Link Fuller
There’s a huge LEADERSHIP void in American politics today. This dangerous vacuum is clearly evident to
most Americans, and it is as obvious in the Republican Party as the Democrat Party. Lack of real political
LEADERSHIP is slowly and methodically destroying America. Unless this trend is reversed quickly, our
country and the American way of life is doomed. Voters must become educated on key elements of
real, effective leadership. Below are four characteristics of real leadership.
The use of threats, mandates and ultimatums to FORCE conformity and
eliminate dissent is NOT real leadership. Effective leaders use inspiration,
enthusiasm and common sense to lead - not fear and intimidation. Real
leaders search for and passionately seek collaborative solutions; they are
more than just salesmen pushing their own ideas. Real leadership finds the
obstacles and logjams that are standing in the way of success, and then
proceeds to fix the breakdown and solve the problem instead of blaming
others. Their language is filled with “WE” not “I” and “Ours” not ‘My”. They
don’t have pity parties. A real leader stays out of the whine cellar.
Winning leaders offer no alibis or excuses; they offer realistic solutions.
Period. And, real leaders share ownership of the success.
Real Leadership is about Influence and Teamwork, NOT Authority and Power. Effective leaders don’t
just assign the task; they set the pace. They don’t just direct teammates to be on time; they get
there early and stay late. True leaders use facts-data-research-history-truth-reality-economics
and COMMON SENSE to guide, influence and persuade government in a direction that benefits
ALL citizens - regardless of how those citizens voted. Leaders who get things done promote
self-responsibility, personal accountability and self-sufficiency...NOT victim mentality. Yet, a true
leader will recognize and provide help and support to those who genuinely, legitimately need
assistance. There is a rational balance. Rare leaders like this are relationship builders and team
builders. In order for there to be trust, a foundation of respect has to be put in place.
Real Leadership is not something you do TO people….it is something you do WITH people and FOR
people! Successful leaders are empathetic, welcoming and solicit differing points of view. True
leaders clearly understand that no ONE of us is as smart as ALL of us. Open-book transparency is
the standard. There is no duplicity, arrogance or condescending attitude toward others. In a
Christian sense, a true leader would pray WITH someone, not just FOR someone. Real leaders do
not judge/condemn someone else just because they sin DIFFERENTLY. They keep a sharp and
concentrated focus on issues, matters and policies that are of PUBLIC significance - rather than
private, individual preferences and beliefs.
It is urgent that we evaluate True Leaders by their actions and behaviors...NOT their rhetoric.
The leader’s narrative must match his/her actions and behavior, and it is crucial that this narrative
aligns with unbiased truth and reality. Anytime there is a conflict between a leader’s narrative
and the outcomes or direction of their leadership; that is manipulation and duplicity, NOT true
leadership.
To sum up, leaders leave tracks just like deer and other animals. Follow their tracks. Real TRUTH is
observable and measurable. It is objective. Vote for leaders who LOOK LIKE, SOUND LIKE, and ACT LIKE
leaders. You will know them by their results, outcomes, behavior and fruits.
VOTE ACCORDINGLY!
