expedition of 1914 - 1917 is one of the most incredible adventure stories of all

time.

The intention was to cross the Antarctic continent from one coast to the other via the South Pole. The expedition never set foot on

continental Antarctica. The expedition managed to survive the loss of their ship in the middle of the Antarctic pack ice at a time when there was

no chance of contacting the outside world, let alone of being rescued.

Shackletons ship, The Endurance, departed from South Georgia Island on December 5th, 1914…on

They would travel through the Wenddell Sea

which at that time was ice packed and treacherous.

The Endurance battled her way through a thousand miles of pack ice

over a six week period and was one hundred miles - one days sail - from

her destination, when on the 18th of January 1915 at 76°34'S, the ice

closed in around her.

Shackleton realized that in order to effect a

rescue, he was going to have to travel to the nearest inhabited place which was the whaling station back on South Georgia, some 800 miles

distant and across the most stormy stretch of ocean in the world.

They expected to encounter waves that were 50 feet from tip to trough in a 22 foot long boat.

On the morning of the 8th of May, they began seeing kelp floating in the sea, then some sea birds, just after noon they caught a glimpse of

South Georgia, only fourteen days after leaving Elephant Island and about half as long as they thought the journey would take.

The morning brought a shift in the wind and a terrible storm arose, the life boat was tossed

around in the sea and when light broke, they were out of sight of land once again.

Code of the Warrior #8Code of the Warrior #8

Never Quit! They found a likely bay to land, but were blown

out to sea again by a change in the wind. In approaching darkness they eventually were able to enter a small cove fronted by a reef, they had

to take in the oars to pass through, but at long last, carried by the swell, the life boat was able to land on a South Georgia beach at King

Haakon Bay.

Code of the Warrior #8Code of the Warrior #8

Never Quit! There was still a major obstacle to

overcome. They had landed 22 miles from the Stromness whaling station as the crow flies. In order to get there they had to go across the

backbone of mountains that ran the length of South Georgia, a journey that no-one had ever managed.

on going, you don’t lose the fight. – Jim Phillips

Inspire OthersThe Battle of Thermopylae

When the Persian Army invaded Greece a Greek force of

approximately 7,000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient

sources to have numbered in the millions, arrived at the pass in late August or early September. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held

off the Persians for seven days in total (including three of battle), before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most

famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass.

Code of the Warrior #10Code of the Warrior #10

Inspire Others

After the second day of battle, a local

betrayed the Greeks by revealing asmall path that led behind the Greek

lines. Aware that his force was beingoutflanked, Leonidas dismissed the

bulk of the Greek army, andremained to guard the rear with 300

Spartans, 1100 Greek Warriors andperhaps a few hundred others, the

vast majority of whom were killed.

Code of the Warrior #10Code of the Warrior #10

The story of their sacrifice inspired

the other Greeks to defeat the Persian army and warriors for

generations to come.

King Leonidis was considered “First in Line”, who led by example and inspired

his men through his actions, not his words.

Uniforms But No GunsIn Aurora, code enforcement officers are unarmed, but they do carry radios, Sheffield, the neighborhood services director, said. They wear uniforms that are distinctly different from the blue uniforms worn by Aurora police officers, police said. However, they all wear badges. It's unclear exactly how many code enforcement officers are assaulted each year.

An officer in Warner Robins, Ga., was shot in April when he and another code enforcement officer arrived with three tow-truck drivers to remove junk vehicles from a property. And, in August 2007, a code enforcement officer in Clarkstown, N.Y., was stabbed as he photographed abandoned, rundown cars at a property.

In Denver, code enforcement officers made nearly 46,000 after-construction property inspections between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1 without incident, said Julius Zsako, spokesman for Community Planning and Development. Denver's code enforcement officers inspect new construction as well as ensure properties are properly maintained. The latter involves issues like yards that aren't mowed, cars that are parked on unpaved surfaces and upholstered furniture placed outdoors when it shouldn't be.

Rocky Mountain News staffers George Kochaniec Jr., Bill Scanlon and Judi Villa contributed to this report.

Limit Your Choices.

W.E. Hicks made a study in 1952 that found that as the possible responses increase from one to two, the reaction increased 58%. In other words having to choose between options takes time, and the more options that you have, the greater the reaction.

This is now referred to as “Hicks Law’.
