BLACKPOOL Odeon is the place to befrom February 6 when it becomes the firstcinema on the Fylde to screen Disney’samazing animated comedy – Bolt. And not only is it the first – the Odeon isexclusively screening the film in 3D.For super-dog Bolt (voiced by JohnTravolta), every day is filled with adven-ture, danger and intrigue – at least until thecameras stop rolling. When the canine starof a hit TV show is accidentally shippedfrom his Hollywood soundstage to NewYork City, he begins his biggest adventureyet – a cross-country journey through thereal world.Armed only with the delusions that all hisamazing feats and powers are real, andwith the help of two unlikely travellingcompanions – a jaded, abandoned housecat

named Mittens and TV-obsessed hamster ina plastic ball named Rhino – Bolt discovershe doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.Miley Cyrus (“Hannah Montana”) bringsher vocal talents to the role of Penny,Bolt’s human co-star on the televisionseries.

In stark contrast to RevolutionaryRoad, which reminds us howbadly love hurts, Peter Sollett’s

unabashedly romantic comedy har-nesses the magic of falling giddily inlove when you least expect it.

Set in New York City over the courseof one manic night, Nick & Norah’sInfinite Playlist is a warm hug of afilm that leaves you feeling wonder-fully contented; a willing back seatpassenger to the amusing misadven-tures of two high school studentswith a shared appreciation of music.

First time screenwriter LoreneScafaria adapts Rachel Cohn andDavid Levithan’s novel with a lighttouch, fleshing out the adorable leadcharacters and their quirky friendswith a smattering of snappy dia-logue.

Nick (Michael Cera) is the bass gui-

tarist and the only straight memberof a queercore band called The JerkOffs, comprising good friends Dev(Rafi Gavron) and Thom (AaronYoo).

He is still madly in love with hisself-obsessed ex, Tris (AlexisDziena), spending hours creating mixCDs which she just throws in thebin... where sassy, rich girl Norah(Kat Dennings) picks them up.

When news leaks out that elusiveunderground band Where’s Fluffy?will be playing a secret gig some-where in the city, Nick and Norahare unexpectedly thrown together in

his egg yolk-coloured Yugo. SeeingNick with another girl, Tris finallyrealises how much she wants himback and the other members of TheJerk Offs unexpectedly find them-selves babysitting Norah’s drunk andderanged pal, Caroline (AriGraynor).

As true feelings are revealed andyoung hearts broken, Nick andNorah drive through the streets of theBig Apple on an adventure they willnever forget.

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is anabsolute joy, juxtaposing the fluffycentral romance with some salty dis-cussions of sexuality and gross-outinterludes. Screen chemistry betweenCera and Dennings simmers gently, reaching boiling point in a recordingstudio and one of the more memo-rable sex scenes.

SAD COUPLE: Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Wheeler and Kate Winslet as April Wheeler in Revolutionary Road

Wrap up warm with a thick, winter coatand scarf when you watchRevolutionary Road.

Sam Mendes’s beautifully crafted adaptation ofthe novel by Richard Yates chills to the bonewith its unflinching portrait of scenes from adisintegrating marriage.Set in ’50s suburban Connecticut, where whitepicket fences and impeccably mown lawnsproject an image of suburban bliss to mask thebetrayal and regret, Mendes’s film leaves uscold, certainly for the opening hour.A deceptively cosy prologue, detailing the firstencounter between Frank Wheeler (LeonardoDiCaprio) and aspiring actress April Johnson(Kate Winslet) at a Greenwich Village cocktailparty, segues into screaming, shouting, tearsand recriminations. The disastrous first night of April’s play culmi-nates in a blazing row.“It’s not my fault the play was lousy,’’ ragesFrank, adding, “It’s sure as hell not my faultyou didn’t turn out to be an actress.’’April eventually snaps back, “You poor pathet-ic little boy... tell me how, by any stretch of theimagination, you can call yourself a man.’’It’s a far cry from when the couple first arrivesat the perky little house on Revolutionary

Road, full of hopes and dreams. They raise two children and make ambitiousplans to move to Paris, where she can take awell-paid secretarial position at a government

agency and he can decide what he wants to dowith the rest of his life.

Neighbour Mrs Givings (Kathy Bates) and herhusband (Richard Easton) don’t understandFrank and April’s desire to abandon America.

Indeed, the only person who shares theirworldview is the Givings’s emotionally dam-aged son, John (Michael Shannon).

“He’s the first person who seemed to knowwhat we were talking about,’’ remarks April.

“That’s true,’’ replies Frank. “Maybe we arejust as crazy as he is.’’

“If being crazy means living life as if it mattersthen I don’t care if we are completely insane,’’retorts his wife.

The Wheelers are soon driving each otherinsane as Frank sleeps with a secretary (Kazan)and an increasingly unhappy April encouragesthe advances of married neighbour Shep(David Harbour).

Revolutionary Road is technically polished, from Mendes’s deliberately slow direction tothe flawless production design, Roger Deakin’scinematography and Thomas Newman’smoody score with echoes of American Beauty.

Performances are electrifying too, withDiCaprio and Winslet verbally tearing strips offeach other.

But only in the sombre closing frames do wefind ourselves moved by their anguish.

AUTHENTIC FLAVOURS: Manager Suda Hession (centre) and staff with food

By Robin DukeEntertainment Editor

ACarleton couple arehoping that when atfirst you do succeed –

try Thai again.Following the success of theirSuda Thai Food businesswhich they established in therear of premises they ownedand formerly rented off toJames Torrance Butchers,Garfield Hessian and SudaBarrow have now opened atakeaway and small licensedrestaurant.Suda Thai Cuisine opened tothe public last night and willbe trading daily from 5.30pmto 10.30pm.Licensed to sell beer andwine, the restaurant operationaccommodates up to 15 peo-ple and the couple are hopingto extend trading hours to thedaytime once they become abit more established.Suda was the head chef at theMews Thai restaurant inPoulton for five years butwith a youngster to bring up,the couple fancied spendingmore time together as a fami-ly and so set up a businessproviding Thai cuisine to out-lets throughout the area aswell as a limited amount ofpre-prepared sauces on sale tothe public.Suda, whose nickname is Tim,did the cooking and Garfielddelivered the food.“We had a little boy so wewere looking for something todo in the daytime rather thankeep us apart at night,” saidGarfield. “We thought about a

takeaway at first but thatwould have still meant night-work. Now he is older thingshave become easier.”

As their reputation grew thecouple decided to expand intothe front of the premiseswhich had by then been vacat-ed by the butchers.

Garfield is confident that evenin the midst of a recessionthere is a demand for whatthey are providing.

“I think the quality of thefood will speak for itself,” hesaid. “Our prices are reallycompetitive and our recipesare authentically Thai – unlikea lot of the local Chinese

restaurants who just add themto the menu because thedemand is there.”It’s a demand which they aresure the Carleton location willbenefit from.“We are the only authenticThai restaurant around hereand we have an extensivemenu with some dishes thatour competitors elsewhere-don’t have – plus we offerweekly specials. They will also be continuingwith their retail service,Garfield added. For more details about SudaThai Cuisine contact (07968)543489.
