The medium is themessage on Sundaywhen the man hailed as

Britain’s “most accuratemedium” makes his BlackpoolGrand Theatre debut.Gordon Smith is one of the toppsychic mediums and spiritualteachers in the UK. He devel-oped his abilities as a mediumunder the tutelage of some ofthe great legends of theSpiritualist Church and spent15 years balancing his work asan internationally renownedmedium with his day job as abarber in his native Glasgow.Gordon is the proverbialseventh son of a seventh son –he has three sisters (one ofwhom died before he wasborn) and three brothers.Gordon has two sons and livesnext to a loch on the west coastof his beloved Scotland. From early childhood Gordonhad the ability to see, senseand hear spirit people. As ayoung boy his ability oftenunnerved those around himand so he learned to close hismind to these experiences. Hepursued his passion for gym-nastics until he was 19. He wasgood enough to beselected for the ScottishCommonwealth Games squad. It wasn’t until he was 24, whena friend’s brother appeared athis bedside in the middle of thenight that these gifts were re-

awakened. He later learnedthat the brother had died thatnight in a tragic fire. Gordonwent with his friend to a spiri-tualist church, and during theservice he was told that hewould one day be speakingfrom the “platform”.

This was the start of over 15years of study and practice asGordon went on to develop hisabilities as a medium or mes-senger from the spirit worldunder the tutelage of some ofthe great legends of the spiritu-

alist church. Gordon now con-ducts mediumship workshopsand events around the world. His Celtic charm and livelydemonstrations provide hisaudience with a rare opportuni-ty to experience the fascinatingphenomenon of mediumship, which he delivers to hisaudience with a mix ofhumour, pure passion andempathy to others.

As portrayed here, Bronson is some-thing of a deranged circus clown, narrating his episodic life in over-lapping flashbacks.“My name’s Charles Bronson andall my life, I’ve wanted to befamous,’’ he begins, transporting usback to his formative years with hismother (Amanda Burton). Moving

from Aberystwyth to Merseysideand later to Luton.“Before I forget,’’ he continues, “Idid come into this world as MichaelPeterson,’’ eventually changing hisname at the behest of his boxingpromoter, Paul Daniels (Matt King).“You need a fighting name, like amovie star,’’ he advises.

“Charlton Heston?’’ suggestsMichael.“You’re more the Charles Bronsontype,’’ replies Paul sagely. Thus a legend is born, althoughRefn’s film never really gets beneaththe skin of this erratic, crazed, tight-ly wound and sometimes morbidlyfunny character.

BRONSON (18)Rating: 5/10

Originally sentenced to sevenyears at the age of 19 for abungled armed robbery,

Charles Bronson is now one of theUK’s most notorious and violentinmates of our overcrowded prisonsystem. He has spent 30 of his 34 yearsbehind bars in solitary confinement, and has not been allowed to mix withother prisoners since 1999, currentlylanguishing in HM Prison Wakefieldfrom where he continues to produceaward-winning poetry and art.Celebrated Danish filmmaker,Nicolas Winding Refn (Fear X, thePusher trilogy), attempts to makesense of this tortured soul in this psy-chedelic and controversial biopic thatpummels the senses into weary sub-mission.How do you get inside the mind of aman who has been certified as clini-cally insane... and would you evenwant to?The stylistic quirks honed in thedirector’s earlier films are on displayhere in unflinching and disturbingscenes of violence within the prisonwalls as the hulking, shaven-headedBronson (Tom Hardy) readies himselffor a beating. The film’s strongest asset is the lead-ing man, who has bulked up for therole and loses himself in the charac-ter, delivering an uncompromisingand fearless performance that exudesmenace and rage.He doesn’t hold back for an instant, going full frontal as the inmate

MARLEY AND ME (PG)Rating: 5/10

BBooww wwoowwWWOOWW

Animal lovers will go crazy about DavidFrankel’s comedy-drama about oneman’s journey of self-discovery with a

mischievous Labrador, based on the memoirby John Grogan.Adapted for the screen by Scott Frank and DonRoos, Marley & Me collars decent laughs withuproarious interludes as the four-legged centralcharacter runs amok in sunny Florida. However, the script plumbs surprising emo-tional depths too, eliciting strong performancesfrom lead stars Owen Wilson and JenniferAniston (both above) as a young couplestruggling to juggle professional and parentalresponsibilities.Audiences should cram every pocket with han-kies as Frankel’s film is a modern-day OldYeller, following the relationship between manand his best friend to its natural conclusion.Forget a polite, covert dab to the eyes.Grown men will be reduced to sobbing andsnivelling wrecks by the picture’s final frames, which remain the right side of cloying.Newly-weds John and Jenny Grogan (Wilson,

Aniston) move from Michigan to the subtropi-cal climate of West Palm Beach to pursue par-allel careers as journalists and settle down. When fellow reporter Sebastian (Eric Dane)plants a seed of worry in John’s mind about hiswife wanting a baby, the husband decides tododge the bullet by buying Jenny a child sub-stitute: a yellow Labrador pup called Marley. The tiny bundle of fun soon grows into 100pounds of uncontrollable energy, chewing upanything and everything in John and Jenny’shome, including their clothes and furniture. An expensive necklace has to work its waythrough the dog’s digestive tract before Jennycan wear it around her neck. The couple labels the pet “the world’s worstdog’’ and hopes an obedience trainer (KathleenTurner) might be able to instil some discipline.Inevitably, Marley wreaks havoc. “Leg hump-ing is like a virus: once it starts, it takes control

of the group!’’ lambasts the trainer, quicklyexpelling the Labrador from her group. The experiences compel John to put pen topaper and write a popular column in the localnewspaper, to the delight of his cranky editor(Alan Arkin).Marley & Me wrings every chuckle and tearout of its familiar dramatic set-ups.Wilson and Aniston demonstrate impeccabletiming but their roles also test their acting met-tle as they are driven to the brink of exhaustionby their efforts to raise a family.Arkin brings a roguish charm to his part andDane is little more than eye candy as the palwho embodies the carefree bachelor lifestyleJohn happily gives up to be at Jenny’s side.Frankel confidently handles the abrupt shifts intone, like the couple’s initial attempts to havechildren, and strikes just the right tone for theheartbreaking final scenes as John looks at hiscompanion and tenderly whispers, “Let meknow when it’s time.’’Only the stone coldest heart – or a cat lover –would fail to be moved.

IMPECCABLE upper-classaccents and sustained clari-ty of speech are the corner-stones of this convincingperformance, unfussilystaged in the round.Producer Neil Walkershows a clear insight ofAusten’s characterisationand draws splendidly indi-vidualistic performancesfrom each of his relativelyinexperienced cast of 18.Jane Kendall’s skilled adap-tation of a 400-page novelplaces the family dialogueat the heart of the actionand here Jenny Luke excels, rolling her eyes and shriek-ing wonderfully as the over-anxious Mrs Bennett. Shemakes a perfect foil to herlong-suffering husband –superbly played by PeterMackay who revels in hisone-liners.The beautifully-spoken per-formance of Sophie Owenas the snappy Lizzie and the

uninhibited exuberance ofLucy Blundell as the ditzyLydia are contrastinglyentertaining. There is top-quality, too, from OliviaSwift, Jessica Pratt andSarah Wirtz (Jane, Kitty andMary) and Rose Baulk asthe narrating Jane Austen.Jack Ormond-Prout’scharming Mr. Bingley,Oliver Johnson’s broodingMr. Darcy and Henry Cox,over-the-top as the affectedMr. Collins, make the mostof their chances. It’s as different as you canimagine from recent pro-ductions of Les Miserablesand the Little Shop ofHorrors, but the audience isjust as richly entertained byAusten’s acute social obser-vation, as well as perhapssurprised by the humour ondisplay throughout a fineproduction, which ends onSaturday at 7.30pm.
