DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
FROM CULINARY- Chris Ramsey
New Alternative Menu in the main dining room will start Monday February
17th. It will be available everyday except Sunday and Wednesday.
Starting February 24th, 2020 Landing Specials will be noted on page 2 of
the weekly menus. The catch of the day will be joined by two other
specials, which will run for a week changing every Monday. Note: Specials
may change due to product availability in the market and demand, if so
these changes will be listed on the chalk boards outside the Landing.
Sustainability update: We recently ran reporting comparing the disposable
paper product usage of the last 60 days (December 2019 through January
2020) versus the 60 days before we reduced our dependence on
disposable paper products (October 2019 through November 2019). The
result is a net savings of $6000 to the culinary department and hundreds of
pounds of paper waste not going to our local landfills. Every penny saved
will go towards improving our culinary programs and providing our
residents a better dining experience.
FROM ADMINISTRATION: Karen Cheney
DINNER WITH A BOARD MEMBER? The Board will meet on February
27th. If you are interested in dining with a board member prior to their
meeting, kindly let Karen Cheney know. Dinner would need to be at 5
PM. Send Karen an email at [email protected]
FROM FACILITIES/IT: Rob Reigle
Pepco working behind 1200’s – For those of you not aware, there is an electrical challenge that Pepco is working on that affects a few cottages in the 1200’s. You may notice some small flags and ground markings. These markings are for mis utility and we are expecting
20 Courier February 17th-23rd ,2020
Pepco to do some digging very soon. Pepco has not been clear on when the digging will start but we will communicate as we get more information. Please use caution in this area. Cottage Walkway Support poles – We have started the project of replacing and repairing support poles along the covered walkway. This project will be a long term ongoing project and we are starting with the poles that need the most attention. In this first round you will see a couple of poles being repaired and replaced near the following cottages: 1015, 1017, 1102, 1218, 2205 and 4114.
Slow Down campaign: Collington management has teamed up with
some resident leaders to Improve traffic safety. We have started a slow-
down campaign and will be communicating the need for all drivers to
obey posted speed limits and stop signs. This will be communicated in
different ways including staffing the front gate on two days this month,
employee meetings and resident community meetings and in the weekly
courier. Thank you in advance for your help.
We are in the process of completing arbor work on the campus. We still
have some chipping to do and stump grinding as well. Because of the
depth of grinding Miss Utility had to be called which caused some delay.
The major delay at this time is the weather and access to the stump
sites. The ground needs to be firm by drying out or freezing before they
can proceed to the sites. We will keep you updated on the timing.
Thanks for your patience as the aesthetics of the campus is so important
to all of here at Collington. Thanks, Kyle (Horticulturist)
FROM HEALTH SERVICES- Megan Barbour
The candidate who had been selected to fill the role of Director of Facilities
was tentatively scheduled to join the Collington team on Monday, February
17th. Unfortunately, the selected individual notified us on February 13, 2020
that they will not be accepting this position as they have chosen another
opportunity that is more aligned with their family’s needs. We will continue
recruiting for this position and Rob Reigle will remain the Interim Director of
Facilities until a candidate is chosen.
21 Courier February 17th-23rd ,2020
Collington team members have been busy preparing for the annual Health
Center’s Skilled Nursing Facility mock survey which will occur February 17th
through the 19th. Chiles Healthcare Consulting team members will be on
site looking at policies, procedures, process and quality improvement
efforts to prepare us for our annual Department of Health survey which
typically occurs in the spring months. Last year Collington received zero
deficiencies at its annual survey in May 2019 and it was in great part to the
hard work the team put in after the mock survey. Collington anticipates this
year mock survey process to be just as beneficial, a great learning
experience and is looking forward to continuing quality and process
improvement efforts for the Health Center.
FROM FINANCE- Justin Reaves
2019 TAX INFORMATION: The 2019 Tax Package for all residents is
now available, and was sent to the email address on file to the majority of
you. If you don’t have an email address, you may stop in one of three
locations to pick up a paper copy. We hope the majority of you will forward
the email to your tax preparer with the information to help us with our
sustainability efforts by reducing the amount of paper required to copy! If
you need a paper copy, you may pick one up from the 1) Clock Tower
Front Desk, 2) Finance Office or 3) Administration Office.
Important Planning Information
Reminder: If you ever call 911 from Collington, please be sure to notify security x2020. They will then meet the emer-gency personnel at the gate and take them directly to you! This will save precious time in an emergency.
Master Planning (from Charlie Clapper)
Since the founding of Collington there has never been a comprehen-sive evaluation of our 125-acre Campus landscape. In summer 2019, The Grounds Committee began discussing the need for a comprehensive landscape master plan. Grounds Committee mem-bers Larry Harris, Dennis Klass, Peggy Latimer, and Charlie Clapper collaborated to draft the plan. If you are interested in reading the plan and commenting on it, please ask Charlie Clapper x7255, for a copy.
Executive Director Ann Gillespie’s Gathering #2 Update in the Feb-ruary 10-16 Courier included a brief summary of The Landscape Master Plan. At Gathering #2, the importance of our Campus grounds to current residents became very clear—it is one reason many of us chose to live here. Fully integrating the Landscape Mas-ter Plan into the Collington Master Plan will help ensure that our landscape will continue to be attractive and receive equal considera-tion for priority funding and the same attention to quality design as other development receives – resulting in an enhanced quality of life and vitality.
Many thanks to Charlie and his team for this document. It is well worth your reading time.
Finally - Many thanks to RoAnne Dahlen-Hartfield who donated 4 DVDs sold by Wednesday night’s speaker, Joan Mullholland, a renowned civil rights worker. All 4 DVDs were written and directed by her son and won many awards as well. They will be available for loan by contacting one of the RA executive committee members.
Be well, be happy,
Lois Brown, RA President
