Local Little Athletics Group

An expression of interest.

Are there any Parents/caregivers/ community members who would be interested in forming a Little Athletics club for our area?

The formation of a local Little Athletics Group relies heavily on Parents volunteering. The new season commences in October 2017, but maybe if it doesn’t get of the ground we can look into the 2018 season if there is enough interest.

If you are interested in starting a Little Athletics group in our local community let Marina Wenban know at [email protected]

For more information about Little Athletics, see page 27.

Vale Dawn Elizabeth McMorrow

The death of Dawn McMorrow occurred on 15th May at Canberra hospital.

Dawn was born in Goulburn on January 1st 1945. Dawn was the youngest daughter of Sid and Bessie Williams who lived at “Spring Creek” and “Wattle Flat” down the bottom of the Spa Road before moving to “Bumbumba” at Windellama.

Dawn attended Windellama School in 1950 as did her two daughters, Kylie and Lara years later.

Dawn and Peter moved from Sydney to Windellama in 1973 to “Thurlimbah”.

Memories of Dawn and her community work are many, I hope I can name a few. Dawn was one of the original Windellama Gardwn Club members. Also amongst her many tasks was the school P & C which included a trip to the snow with teachers and parents to help the kids.

A very active member of the tennis club and the local fire brigade, Friday games nights were always supported by Dawn and Peter. One memory that comes back is the “thunder box” toilet that was located between the park and the current SES shed, it was very dilapidated, so Dawn decided at a garden club clean up to give it a coat of paint, net there was a multi coloured rainbow with the signature K DONE. It was decided that it would be Keith or Kathy Done who signed it.

One of the first books on the history of Windellama, the front cover being illustrated by Dawn. Dawn and other people interviewed some of the older residents for the book.

The monument at the front of the hall was also something Dawn had a hand in helping to design. The gold panner is no longer in existence due to being run over by a truck.

Dawn was tied up with the Hall Committee (now Progress) Dances changing to Cabarets. The local church, St Bartholomew’s was supported by Dawn and family when the field days began Dawn was there again.

Many a trip was had by locals down the Spa Road to Spring Creek and Wattle Flat.

In her spare time Dawn kept herself amused doing pottery, macramé gardening and rearing calves to name a few. Haircuts were another talent that Dawn possessed.

Dawn and Peter both celebrated their birthdays on 1st January and a wonderful time was had by many locals for days.

These are just a few of my personal memories of Dawn. I am sure many people could add others to my list.

Dawn and Peter moved to the sough coast in 1998 where she took up golf again, bowls was another interest and she volunteered at the local radio station.

Dawn is survived by her daughters Kylie and Lara and their children, sister Beryl and many friends who will miss her and will always remember the wonderful things that she did.

These are some memories I have of Dawn Mc Morrow and the wonderful things she did for

Windellama.

Nerriga Gardeners

After a cool start to the day on the range a

contingent of us drove to the relatively

warmer climes of Nowra to inspect Di's

garden. She has been there less than

18months and already the garden is growing

and the bare lawn policy of its previous

owners has been abolished. The white

hardenbergia is making a determined effort to

cover the front fence on one side and several

other creepers are growing well including a

wisteria. If she

could find a way

to discourage the

local cats who

think she plants

seedlings for

them to dig up

and enjoy her loosening of the ground then

she would be even happier. The new cottage

garden bed has

penstemons with the

largest flowers I have

ever seen and I am sure

she is secretly feeding

them steroids. Citrus are

doing really well and are

carrying large amounts of

fruit on tiny plants

including the newly

planted Seville Orange tree ( a nice lot of

marmalade coming up ). We enjoyed a lovely

lunch using up the

last of Di's tomatoes and not so healthy but

enjoyable cakes and slices.

Next month on 17th August we hope to

travel to Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens just

south of Bateman's Bay and will meet at 9am

at 7184 Nerriga Road to car pool. As usual all

are welcome to come and although there is a

café at the Gardens I would suggest packing a

sandwich for lunch as the service is on the

slow side.

quickly so I can avoid the cold calls and scams.

August in Your Garden By Irene Turner

Prepare your vegetables and flower gardens for Spring. Add compost and animals manure, dig into the soil with a generous handful of complete fertilizer and lime per metre. Growing vegetables and flowers can naturally be a drain on the soil, so for a successful and rewarding garden make sure you have a fertile soil.

VEGETABLES TO SOW

Seeds- Carrots, parsnip, lettuce, silver beet, onions and peas.

Plants- Cabbage, Sugar Loaf, Superette, Lettuce, Silver Beet, onions both brown Spanish, odourless, red odourless and white.

Asparagus and rhubarb crowns.

FLOWERS

SEEDS- Petunias and phlox.

Seedlings; pansy, viola, stocks, snapdragons, aquilegia, carnations, dianthus, primula, dwarf sweet william, alyssum, poppies and larkspur.

You can still prune roses and fruit trees now. Spray with Lime Sulphur after pruning. With peaches and nectarine make sure they are sprayed no later than pinking of the buds, this controls leaf curl.

Spray apple, pear, plum, quince and your roses with Winter Oil, this controls mite and scale

Plant gladioli, hippeastrum and nerines.

Water and stake any delicate plants exposed to drying and damaging winter westerlies.

Re-pot container plants that are pot-bound.

Lift and divide crowded clumps of canna lilies in readiness for spring growth.

Cover delicate plants overnight when frost is predicated.

Get on to winter weeds and remove or kill them before they shed their seeds.

Remove spent flower heads from winter and spring bulbs, and feed to keep them growing, so

they store energy for next year.

Craft @ Windellama Hall We will close for August, but will be back on second Tuesday in September 12th. For more information please call Irene Turner on 48445 214.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR

We of the SES are very fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in various courses as the one just undertaken by members of the Windellama Unit. The task was to go to the NSW Fire Service training facility at Ingleburn and become qualified in the pursuit of Urban Search and Rescue. We, in doing so, had the pleasure of being given a guided tour of that facility, which is something to experience. The general public does not appreciate the training and dedication that these people have to go through to keep the Urban people safe. The NSW F ire Service also responds at a moment’s call to events that do occur overseas.

Our call out rate has also been rather heavy over the last month. This makes me really wonder why more people do not come and join our Unit to lighten the load on us few “oldies”. People want the service which we provide, but yet are reluctant to help us. We have been told that as retirees we have time on our hands to do this sort of thing. Let me assure you that this is not the case as we are very busy trying to do our own thing, whilst helping those in need. Therefore it is my opinion that it is high time that some of you younger people set your mind to doing a service to your community. Spread over a bigger number it means a lot less work for everybody.

Putting it plainly folks, if you want this service to keep going, you had best stand up and be counted.

We do have members that have jobs, but they are prepared to give us as much help as possible, nights and on days off. These are real community minded people.

Remember folks there is no ’I’ in team. This applies to all activities where team work is involved.

None of you are aware of the opportunities that are open to you as an SES member. They are many, some very interesting, from the air wing to mundane activities on the ground. Come along to one of our meetings , the second and third Monday of each month, where you can gain some insight in to what we are really all about .

We now have a new Commissioner and there are some new and exciting changes coming up, all for the better, it would seem.

WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News On the third of July that happened to be a cold blustery day, Willow Glen and Windellama Garden Club members fronted up at St Bartholomew’s Windellama for the annual garden and surrounds spruce-up. Out of the back of Utes etc., all manner of tools and equipment was produced. It wasn’t long before the work was completed. This garden like the garden at our place and probably other gardens in the area is in dire need of rain. The best part of the day was when we got out of the wind and had a cuppa and a chin wag.

This year the frost has been rather severe and so called frost tolerant plants and shrubs have been severely decimated. Don’t be in a hurry to cut back or remove these plants as you never know they might do a remarkable recovery in spring – maybe?

Please remember that on Saturday August 12 the Cake Auction for Goulburn Can-Assist will be held. Gates will open at 10.30am and the cake Auction will start at 12.30pm. All donations of cakes and helping hands will be greatly appreciated.

It’s worth remembering that all monies collected at the cake auction are donated to the Goulburn Can-Assist group. This group of volunteers provide practical support services and financial assistance to local families affected by cancer while undergoing cancer treatment.

Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

MULTIPURPOSE COURT As can be seen when you drive past the school there has certainly been a change in our landscape. The multipurpose court has been completed. The P&C have laid some turf and we are waiting for a fence to be erected. As the principal of Windellama Public School, I am so very proud of the dedication of the P&C who have worked tirelessly to ensure this project has come to fruition. It has taken 5 years and approximately $90 000 to complete the multipurpose court. I would also like to thank our community members Graham Kinder and the Windellama Progress Association who have so generously donated their time and money to help with this project coming to completion. We will continue to make changes to the school landscape and will keep our community informed of our grand opening which will occur later in the year.

ANGELLA STORRIER BREAKFAST CLUB DONATION

Each year Angella Storrier from Angella Storrier Real Estate so kindly and generously donates to our school. In the past Angella has contributed to many things including subsidising our students attendance and performance at The Instrumental of Music Festival in Sydney where we take the opportunity to engage in many wonderful extra curricula activities and learning which complement what we are teaching at Windellama.

PEER SUPPORT LESSONS This term we have again begun Peer Support lessons. The module we are looking at is about the importance of friendship. Windellama is a special place where our students do a marvellous job in this area.

What is a Hazard Reduction

Hazard reduction is just one way of preparing for bush fires – it doesn't remove the threat of fire, and it doesn't remove the need for you and your family to be prepared.

There are different types of hazard reduction including controlled burning, mechanical clearing like slashing undergrowth, or even reducing the ground fuel by hand.

You can see a list of planned hazard reduction burns at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/hazard-reductions . The list may change at short notice depending on the weather at the time.

If there is a hazard reduction burn planned near you, take the following steps:

• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes

• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns

• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage

• Remove washing from clotheslines

• Ensure pets have a protected area

• Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on

• Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety

If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or the Asthma Foundation.

What role can I play with the Windellama Rural Fire Brigade?

THANKS BEV McGAW

At the recent Windellama Progress meeting the community had a chance to thank Bev McGaw for all her fantastic efforts over many, many years. Bev has been a member of the local Rural fire Brigade since she was a teenager and for really long time has been the Communications Officer. Bev was the go to person if you spotted smoke, called the Brigade together, for accidents road and farm, lost animals of any description and even some misplaced husbands who forgot something from home or who needed to be contacted . Bev was the one you rang even if you needed to find out who to contact in various community organisations and she did this all days all hours.

So Thankyou Bev McGaw from the Windellama Community

Windellama Landcare Advice

WINDELLAMA

Serrated Tussock Elimination and Control NOTE: If Serrated Tussock has been established in an area for some years, the seed bank exists and there is nothing one can do but follow up clearing of an area every year after seeds germinate and chip the area.

IF there are large areas and spraying is preferred refer to the NSW WEEDWise document (http://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Details/123) and understand your obligations under the Chemical Certification regulations.

Following are notes on how to remove serrated tussock manually (no spray) and has been successfully used by one of our members. Early intervention when infestations are small, as with all weeds, makes the task easier.

IDENTIFICATION. The NSW WEEDWise document has excellent photos but do not help identification all year round. When the plant is seeding it is easy to identify. For a short time during the year serrated tussock looks very similar to native poa. Poa has slightly varying thickness, and varying green colour shades in the leaves; serrated tussock leaves are very uniform in colour and thickness (other than the flowering stems). Running one’s finger backwards (towards the roots) along a leaf has a very smooth feel for poa; for serrated tussock one can feel the fine serrations (hence its name). Serrated tussock mostly has much straighter/erect leaves; poa leaves tend to bend and droop. As serrated tussock seeds mature they display a purple tinge.

REMOVAL. Serrated tussock can be removed by digging out the plants with a mattock or using a small chipping tool if they are small. Serrated tussock will not survive when left on the ground with little soil attached to the roots. Dig out large tussocks when the ground is soft. Start in the middle of an area and stack the removed plants in the middle; you are less likely to miss plants, or cover up plants that you have not dug up. Small tussocks (seedlings) are easy to chip in soft or hard ground; won’t reshoot if you leave a few roots.

SEEDING PLANTS. It is important that all seeds are bagged and disposed of in domestic rubbish or buried. The easiest way to collect the seeds, is to gather the leaves together in one hand into a tight bunch, cut them off the tussock with secateurs, and dispose of the seeds in a bag; then dig out the tussock - shake off excessive soil. There is no need to bag the plant and its roots – collecting this only adds weight to the bag. The best time to do this is when the seed stems have started to spread from the plant and are turning white – they are easy to see. Don’t leave it too late or the seeds will drop off the stems and the stems easily separate from the plant.

For further information about ALL weeds enter “NSW Weedwise” into your search engine and

go to weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au.

WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASOCIATION

At a meeting of residents held at the Windellama P.O. on Thursday night last it was decided to form a progress association and debating society. A strong committee was formed, and the following office-bearers were elected :-President, Mr FA. Finlay (Nadgingomar); Vice-Presidents, Messrs J Gegg and Alex. Henderson ; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr W Muffett. The first general meeting will be held on Saturday, 30th May, when some matters of local interest will be discussed.

On 4 July 1903 a letter was written to the Goulburn Progress Association by the Windellama Association seeking assistance to get the telephone line extended to Windellama. The Goulburn Progress Association suggested that a signed petition be sent to Mr Conroy, MP for the area for him to present to the Government.

Later in 1903 the Windellama Progress Association was enquiring when a dam, already approved would be constructed on the Quialigo Reserve. On 27 August 1903 Mr Chapman MP in a reply to a letter from Mr W Muffet advised that as there had been good rain and conditions were more favourable the construction of dams on Quialigo and Gundary Reserves would be stood over.

(Goulburn Evening Penny Post 21 May 1903 p4.)

___________________________________________

Sometime after this the Progress Association seems to have disbanded as in December 1945 there was a meeting to form a Progress Association. At this meeting Mr F Roberts was elected President, Mr T Hockey Vice President and TV Dove Secretary-Treasurer.

In the Goulburn Evening Post of 27 February 1946 the Progress Association is referred to as the “Windellama, Bronte, Oallen, Lower Boro Progress Association.” At this time a letter was written asking that the fencing around the Gundary Reserve be attended to.

In December 1946, a letter was proposed to be sent to the Goulburn Tourist Bureau suggesting a recreation area be constructed at Oallen Ford. Concern was felt at the poor representation from Lower Boro; Oallen, Bronti and Jacqua, in which the association was directly concerned.

A special meeting of the Windellama Progress Association was held in January 1951 to discuss getting the electricity service extended to Windellama. The association was referred to as the “Windellama, Lower Boro, Oallen Progress Association.” This didn’t happen for another nine years.

Unfortunately the National Library search tool TROVE for searching the old newspapers doesn’t go past 1954 reference to the Windellama Progress Association could not be traced beyond this time. There does however seem to have been a recess as in 1988 the Hall committee seems to have become the Progress Association and is going from strength to strength.

SPRING OUTLOOK AT Windellama

(Goulburn Evening Post 25 September 1942 Page 3)

Boisterous weather still continues at Windellama, the wind reaching gale force. A heavy thunderstorm was experienced on Tuesday night, with very heavy lightning, but only 10. points of rain were registered. With two heavy frosts this week the prospects of a good spring are very slender. .Most of the lambing is finished, and in some cases owners have experienced heavy losses owing to the bad weather. crows and hawks. Shearing is about to start. Tile first shed to start in the district is that of Mr Reader, who will start on Monday, but other sheds will soon be in full swing.

THE UPS & DOWNS OF WILDLIFE CARE

By Kay Muddiman - Media Officer

Wildlife care brings along with it a huge range of emotions, ranging from joy to utter

devastation. We lose many creatures despite our best efforts, so therefore tend to make much of our successes (a necessity to keep us going!) You would think therefore that it would get easier when you lose an animal, but it doesn't - especially if you have to make the decision to euthanase. It is simply devastating - every time.

I thought I would share with you two of my recent rescue experiences, both occurring within a week of one another - one sad, but thankfully the other with a happy ending.

The first (and sad one) was a young joey Eastern Grey Kangaroo, injured in a vehicle collision which had killed her mother. She was spotted and picked up one evening and brought direct to our house by a local resident. The joey was bleeding profusely from her nose and mouth, with very laboured breathing. She also had glazed eyes and was totally limp - obviously she had suffered massive head trauma. I knew

in my heart what the outcome was going to be, and sadly I was right. Within ten minutes of settling her in a warm pouch and making her as comfortable as possible she had a couple of seizures and died. In reality, a blessed relief for her.

The second (and joyful one) was a 1.3kg joey wombat, a little girl who was rescued from the pouch of her Mum who had been killed on the road. Thankfully she had no visible injuries, although of one can never be sure (only hope) that they haven't suffered internal injuries. She was of course traumatised, and after an initial examination was put in a covered, warm pouch in a quiet spot to settle. After a couple of hours came the first attempts to feed her and, as they all do, she put up a massive objection and fight with both teeth and claws to the artificial teat and formula that didn't taste at all like Mums! It's amazing how muscly, strong and wriggly they are even at this early stage, but I did finally manage to get her to take a little! I passed her on to another carer, who already had a wombie around the same size, the next day as they do far better with another joey for company. In the burrow in the wild joeys are constantly with Mum, who not only feeds and nurtures them, but plays with them - and they stress enormously without this. As human 'Mums' we can't be with them 24 hours a day giving them attention, so a buddy helps make up for this. Also they ideally need a carer who can take them right through to release, rather than going through the stress of changing carers, and being on a main road we're unable to do this. I checked a few days ago and she is going well. Whilst it took a several days and a few battles to get her to accept the bottle, she now does and drains it with relish and is going well. She has been named 'Bindi' as she came from Binda!

Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring the WIRES Rescue Number 1300 094737. Your call will be logged and directed to our branch electronically, so that we can respond accordingly. As always, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist.

Until next time - take care all and keep warm,

Kay

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com

On Tuesday 4th July some of our members and Windellama Garden Club met at ST. Bart Windellama for a trim and a tidy up.

First up the Urn was put on- while waiting pruning was carried out.

John mowed some of the grounds. Lloyd took to some dead trees with his chain saw. The rest trimmed and weeded. Irene planted some daffodil bulbs- boy was the soil hard.

We stopped for morning tea and discussed our gardens. Most of us have broad beans, peas, silver beet and Chinese Wong Bok cabbage. We all complained about our weed growth.

Carolyn still has Chough scratching up her garden.

We welcome the Minister Peter, who enjoyed our talk about our gardens. He invited us in the near future to visit his wife garden in Goulburn. (I hope he lets her known.)

Carolyn brought fig tree cutting, place them in a pot with newspaper in the bottom plant them deep and put a plastic drink bottle over to protect them from frost.

Warren brought African violets leaves and garlic bulbs.

We went back to pruning and picking up the branches and placing them in Warren Ute. The wind was getting quite cold and blowing hard, so we decided to pack up.

We would like to send a Cheerio to Jackie, who is not well and in Canberra Private Hospital.

Happy gardening Irene.

Fitness The emphasis on developing a healthy attitude to physical fitness at an early age is the key to developing good habits in life. A wide range of age-appropriate running, jumping, throwing and walking events are conducted at Little Athletics Centres. Children compete with others of similar age, with an emphasis placed on participation and personal improvement, rather than winning. Little Athletics contributes to the development of foundation skills in running, jumping and throwing that will stand children in good stead throughout their life and at the same time emphasises family values and enjoyment through personal improvement and participation. Our sport provides skill enhancement at the heart of all other sports and has provided many of our athletes with development to assist them with reaching the pinnacle in their respective sports: Such people as: Sally Pearson - Gary Ablett Jnr - Kimberly Mickle - Simon Black - Steve Hooker - John Worsfold- Geoff Ogilvy - Alisa Camplin - George Gregan - Chris Judd - Dr Peter Larkins - Mike Whitney - Melinda Gainsford- Taylor - Patrick Mills - Jane Flemming and many more.
