    FROM THE PRINCIPAL

End of the Term The past ten weeks have flown past very quickly. I would really like to take this opportunity to thank the whole school community for making me feel welcomed at this great school. The students, staff and parents have gone out of their way to make me feel at home.

I hope that all of the students have a restful and safe holiday period, ready to return to school for a busy term. Well Done It was great to see so many students being recognised at our Principal’s Special Morning Tea yesterday. These students have worked extremely hard over a period of time and are great role models for their peers. Term 2 Calendar A copy of the school’s Term 2 Calendar will be sent with this newsletter. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) update

New Focus Area – ‘We use the playground duty teacher for advice and support’

Our new focus area this fortnight is about the students asking the playground duty teacher for support if they are unable to resolve conflict themselves through communication and collaboration. We will be teaching the importance of this in classrooms this fortnight, and discussing this focus area with the students at morning lines. SRC News

As part of new SRC initiative for 2016, the students will write a regular column in the school newsletter. This idea was initiated by the students and will be one of many projects aimed at further improving student communication at school. See below for the first column: On Wednesday, 30th March, the members of the SRC experienced an exciting workshop with Mr MacSporran. We did lots of fun activities that helped us with our leadership skills. We did activities like body shapes, a challenging 5 piece puzzle, a descriptive text and we came up with ideas for future school events. Some of the events we created were The Monday Funday Disco, The Colour Run and the SRC writing a column in the school newsletter like what you are reading right now! We learned a lot of things including looking at problems from a different angle, We learned all our team-mates names and all about teamwork! We also enjoyed some delicious pizza with a side of lollies, juice and a refreshing ice-block. All 32 SRC members enjoyed the day with Mr. MacSporran.

We thank Mr. MacSporran for planning this awesome day. We hope you do this next year for all the rising leaders!!

by Hritu Saha and Jesse Cameron – 5/6KL

Have a happy and safe school holiday break with your family.

    David MacSporran Relieving Deputy Principal

FROM THE DEPUTY SRC Leadership Workshop

Last Wednesday, 30th March all students in the SRC attended an exciting whole-day leadership workshop. Students learned about models of leadership and practical approaches to engage in leadership projects at school. A free pizza lunch was provided for all students to celebrate this special occasion. This workshop was the first step in ensuring the SRC is an important part of student decision making at Winston Hills Public School.

    Principal’s Morning Tea

Congratulations to those students who attended the Term 1 Principal’s Morning Tea yesterday, 4th April. These students received an honour award this term for 50 or 100 merits. All students received a special certificate and were treated to a delicious morning tea, kindly served by the prefects. Well done on reaching this great milestone!

    Gymnastics – Term 2

During Term 2, all students in K-2, including 1-6P and K/3G, will have the opportunity to participate in a structured weekly gymnastics program on Tuesday or Wednesday. This program will develop a strong foundation in the basic skills of gymnastics through a series of nine sequential lessons. The program is based on the current PDHPE syllabus and will be conducted by Sportspro, a leading provider of sports education in NSW. School Development Day – Professional Learning

On Tuesday, 26th April, the staff will be participating in a professional learning workshop focusing on the 2015-2017 School Plan. Teachers will be discussing and refining the 2016 action plan for our 3 strategic directions:

    1. Teacher Quality & Leadership 2. Student Learning & Welfare 3. School-wide systems

Staff will also be working in stage teams to further strengthen the teaching of reading by engaging with evidence-based practices designed to improve learning outcomes in literacy.

THANKYOU! The committee is always looking for additional helpers so please feel free to let us know if you have any spare time as there are often little jobs that need doing.

A huge thanks must also go to Sue Bryant, who stepped down at the recent AGM. She has left behind the strongest band program that WHPS has seen and big shoes to fill!

The team at Mintfresh IGA, Arthur Street, Baulkham Hills has kindly offered WHPS P&C the opportunity to raise funds for our school during their Market day on Saturday 16TH April 2016 (middle weekend of school holidays).

Mintfresh is donating all produce and BBQ facilities to WHPS on the day. All we need to provide are some helping hands to cook the BBQ and serve the food.

ALL funds raised from the BBQ will be given directly to WHPS P&C.

So if you can spare an hour of your time, I encourage you to jump on line and register to volunteer on the day.

As they say- many hands make light work and many hearts build a community!

    FETE NEWS

The generosity and support we have received from the families at WHPS in regards to the fete has been very much appreciated. It is evident that the idea of holding a fete in 2016 has the support from many of our families. We encourage you (if you have not done so already) to fill in the yellow note and pop it into the “fete”box in the school office. Look out for the next note to be issued in Term 2 …. a call out to ask for volunteers leading up to and on the day. Although preparations are well and truly underway we encourage you all to pop into a fete meeting to see what exciting ideas we have planned.
